LoverBwoy, on a different note: make e no b say na u dey distribute all the naija movies I dey c o LOL Idumota lagos, nnamdi azikiwe road aba, etc. ![]() Was it decreed by federal law that only those 2 addresses can distribute movies? he he |
Good idea larger, make sure the article is well publicized so as to attract potential clients. For example, if u r really serious and hv a few bucks 2 throw arnd, u cd write a wkly piece 4 ur local newspaper. just a thought ![]() |
As far as site functionality, I will say that it looks like pretty much other sites that do the same thing, so I will stick to the coding part of it ![]() The only thing I have to say is that it is good to keep your important stuff "above the fold". By that I mean, take a newspaper, you will notice that the most important news is above the fold line, if you were to fold it in half. In particular, I would not spell out each and every news article. I wd rather put links to the top 5 for example and link that to another page. I personally don't tend to scroll all the way to the bottom on sites. Check out this site for pointers: http://www.mississippi.gov/index.jsp I had a hand in this site many many years ago (hence the tables and graphics ) but it did win a web award, so the givers of the award must know a good thing when they see it ![]() I hope this helps and sorry for not replying sooner. If you need any more help, let me know. Thanks, |
zahy I feel ya on that. I have a cousin-in-law (is there such? ) who sets up cybercafes for people nationwide there. He says most of them refuse to spend the extra money to set up anti-virus software, yet are the first to cry to him for help when something goes wrong. It is the "I am smarter than you because either I am older than you or because I have been in the game longer than you" syndrome. Typical naija mentality that manifests itself pretty much in every aspect of our lives. Again, just because someone has mastered frontpage/dreamweaver and perhaps has copied templates off of another site doesn't make the person a webmaster. You don't erect a 2-storey building on a foundation meant for a bungalow . A good site starts with architecture. Here are my initial questions for clients:1) what is this site for? 2) who is the intended audience? 3) what products/services do you hv to offer? 4) Is there anything in particular you would like to see (like color scheme, etc)? 5) Any graphics or flash on the site? Note, I haven't mentioned money or number of pages, etc. Coding and final presentation is always at the bottom of the heap for me. It consists of only about 10% at the most of my efforts. Like a doctor, the more you get the client to talk, the better you wil be at satisfying him/her as well as even getting the person to drop the pepper. When I do mention money (usually at the end), they tend to ask "y should i pay you N500K when okoronkwo down the street charges only N15K for the same thing?". At that point, I just tell them to go ahead. Frontpage/Dreamweaver don't make a man. Usually it isn't just a high number of users that overwhelm a site. Excessive use of tables, graphics etc play a part too. By removing unnecessary white space at www.autotrader.com , a colleague of mine saved the company $20,000 a month in bandwidth thatz my 2 cents |
larger, better yet, maybe he should switch to a more fluid font structure, like % or pt ![]() |
Kayode, I think it is a mix b/w arrogance and anger. You might want to re-read your post. As I said, there are many ways to skin a cat. C the way I addressed the "text in photo" issue? I could have easily replied prodgal that "when my2cents says something, he knows what he means, " but I didn't. That is y I chose the username my2cents. In US parlance it means "my opinion". So I could be wrong, which is y i always use words like "probably, could be, might be, it is possible", etc. "kazey may know what kazey says", but it could be wrong. Always good to be more of a listener and not a talker. You learn more that way. Finally, please don't respond with the arrogance I have observed. Prodgal and I in particular have encountered such in the past and we dealt with it appropriately ![]() Remember: when a child mistakes a potent herb for a vegetable, it is best that the child experience the backlash himself so that he doesn't repeat it next time. Also, when dark clouds gather, it usually signifies the coming of rain. A wise man at this point would then seek shelter immediately. To be fore-warned is to be fore-armed ![]() Again, we are partners in crime. No need to let this get in the way of a good site review. |
Nah, If e no b panadol, e no d same ting as panadol. Any variations of "land" would just be plain heresy ![]() Of course, as a believer in the free enterprise and its open markets, nothing should stop you from launching your own site. Just give pple a reason not to say that u r ripping the idea straight from NL. Enjoy!! |
Zahy, I c u implemented all changes we discussed but one It's all good sha. As I tell university students here who come to me for advice, a 9/10 is no different from a 10/10. They both amount to an A. So an A I will give u on this effort. Perhaps you could implement the other change in phase 2, if applicable ![]() Of course, that change has to do with the important notice at the bottom. If it is that important, then perhaps it should be at the top, in my humble opinion Again, other than that, its all good in the hood lol. |
haba kayode. Ki lo de, ore mi? O o fe take slight yabbies? na wa o! Anyway, we know all u read is english. In no way, assuming u were referring to my last post in particular, was I supporting one or the other. It could be that Farriel made the changes b/w the time u and prodgal/I took a look at it. It looks good to me. Then again, there are many ways to skin a cat ![]() Could it be you have had too much of that famed malaysian java to drink? U know what they say about caffeine right? No vex o! To me, its nothin but constructive criticism. We are all partners in crime here as far as I am concerned ![]() |
Alright gang., Sorry for not being on earlier - I am actually at home taking a day off, having slipped on my staircase at home at 130am, which required 3 stitches to my upper lip and a 4 hr stay in the hospital. If I didn't love Nairaland and the fine web guys I have met on here, trust me, I would not be logging in ![]() To the issue at hand: Layout is good and color scheme is very biz-like. However, as you said, you did this in a rush and it shows. This site, though well done, is a primary example why quality assurance (aka QA or testing) should b a requirement in any organization and should be calculated in the estimate given the client. When people in naija tell me I charge too much money, I just laugh. They think that just because when I tell them I have headache and they say I should take panadol, that that automatically makes them a doctor. Some people have told me how they spend 3 days building a site. Pretty impressive. I take at least a month. A treat all the sites I make like a pretty woman - to b treated like an egg, to be handled with care. After all, my reputation is at stake ![]() Anyway, here goes my 2 cents (as always ). By the way, if any of you guys out there can get a hold of "Don't make me think" by Steve Krug, it would help you tenfold. This is y prodgal and I really need to make our web workshop a reality :- Kazey, as prodgal has said, I only c at most 3 colors. - No "FAQ" and "case study" pages. If they are not available, don't include them - No search form. No serious site goes without one - Header on home page has an anchor tag (hand shows). Shdnt be the case - As always, I wonder y most people there don't use naija faces on a naija website, esp something as sensitive as consulting business - header looks funny on "contact us" page. - photo of old man on home page, and on other pages I guess, should have caption at bottom in black, not grey which is sort of translucent. - javascript and CSS (calm down, am not about to bore you with my zealotry for web standards LOL) should be made external files, not embedded. All that code, plus the fact that you're using tables, is adding serious weight to the pages. All in all, you did well. To all: Folks (including myself): QA is a big deal in any web/software development process. Research has shown that actual coding of a site/software should take 5% of your time. The other 95% should be directed towards thinking out the process right. Sorry for the long post guys. But hey, in the end, hopefully we will all learn a thing or two ![]() |
ahhhh, all 98 of them. Including the very first one I read, "On the road" ![]() Now I gotta come up the 450 or so pounds I will need to get all of them all at once ![]() Thanks for the site Ndipe. Much appreciated. |
Looong time ago, I made a promise to myself to buy every single pacesetter book out there, but then I left the country. Now I can't help but remember titles such as "mark of the cobra", "the extortionist", etc and the zeal has returned ![]() Is there anyone who knows where I might find a bookstore with all the books in the series, preferably in calabar, uyo or lagos? A friend of mine is returning and I asked him to bring back Ludo and Whot . I would like to add pacesetter books to that list. Thanks, |
Hmmm, Making 400K a month, unless his oil company employers are sending him over for training, I would tell him not to go. If he just has regular visa which means he has to start from the bottom, I would tell him to just use it to get in, bring in stuff to sell, get out and take stuff home to sell. Also, use it to perhaps get his kids there for education. I don't live in Canada and so really can't say much about them, but I am in the US and assume there are some similarities. 400K is a lot of dough. Finally, I have a friend here who used to work at mobil. He came here on training and stayed back so he could marry his long lost girlfriend from university in naija. Sure, he lives a good life; good wife and 2 kids, but he now works doing stuff that has no bearing on his degree or that matches anything he told me he enjoyed while in naija. Just something to think about. |
Does Palmwine Drinkers' Party qualify? LOL |
The Da vinci Code is not the product of a brilliant mind, It is indeed the product of a depraved mind. The Inspiration is from the darkest recesses of hell.Jonpinjeff, based on what facts? You can't just go by what others are saying in the press. Don't get me wrong, I am a christian and regard it as fiction. But that is where I stop. Even if it were true, I still wouldn't doubt what I have been taught from childhood. No need spinning on ur eyebrows. As you said above, calling for a global boycott won't work. Remember what happened with the Passion of Christ? ![]() |
This should help: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-12508.0.html They have been off the air for at least a week |
This thread is a no-brainer. It's called the free market folks, I know that in naija all economics laws are reversed, but the higher the demand the higher the pay, period. Besides, those folks make their money back tenfold, so I don't know what they are worrying about. To me, they should be more concerned about how Okoro buys one VCD at ariaria market, takes it to US then copies it multiple times and rents/sells it to become a millionaire overnight than how much actors are "demanding". This is y I don't like unions. In some other countries, the minute those actors were banned, they probably would hv banded together and formed their own alliances. Here's to the free markets!! |
U leave the person: The person didn't love you that much to tell you from the get-go. This is why pre-marital sex is to b discouraged. Now, if you have already done the wild and dirty dance and you find out he has HIV, chances are that you have it too. If you do, then you have nothing to lose and so its your choice whether or not you leave the person. as always, my 2 cents |
Just because "its false" doesn't mean that you have to suggest stuff to someone based on your own beliefs. Let others make that decision for themselves. At the end of the day, if you let any movie for that matter, shake your beliefs, y believe in it in the first place? I once talked with the preacher at my church (US) and he told me he read the koran daily. Of course, the naija man in me wanted to immediately tell him I was going to recommend him for excommunication but then he said something that makes total sense, "if you don't read the koran, how can you tell them with confidence why their religion isn't the true religion?"Something to think about folks. By telling people not to watch this movie/burning their books, you actually help promote it. Thanks to such criticisms, it made $224million in the US over the wknd and has entered the history books: http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/first-bo-reports-on-da-vinci-code/ I won't watch personally, but thatz because I don't like being around too many people, some of whom don't know how to behave in public. I will buy and read the book though, and definitely watch it when it comes out on HBO. As always, my 2 cents |
No doubt Kazey, I agree with you to an extent: When you specialize in a field, you stand the risk of becoming a dinosaur as well as being labelled as someone who isn't willing to go with the flow. In today's global economy, unlike of old, from my experience, the key is remaining employable, not employed. By that I mean, always improving on your skill set so you can adapt to whatever comes along. Remember the COBOL guys? Whatever happened to them after Y2K? In conclusion, while I am not saying you should be a jack of all trades and a master of none, you still need to know at least 2 or 3 new technologies out there. Sure, in the end, programming is all about logic - only syntax changes. Nonetheless, one should always no y it is good to use one over the other. As always, just my 2 cents ![]() |
I get it now ![]() As in all things with life, as supported by Darwinian theory (zealot christians, make una no crucify me o, na fact), if you don't use something, u lose it. So if you haven't used what you learned, chances are u have forgotten it. As for picking it up again, u can always do so at any time, as long as there is an urge. As for things changing, that is the very reason I am thinking of either getting out of web design and/or operating as a consultant. The web world is now like the greek character Hydra - u finish reading AJAX and think u know it, but just when u close your books are about to update ur resume/CV, AFLAX, LAMP and a ton of others are waiting in the queue ready to be learned. It never stops ![]() In conclusion, I would say, if you aren't willing to do it 100%, don't bother. Nonetheless, you can always know the theory so you can have an intelligent conversation with someone. I hope this helps. |
Seun, For me, it doesn't matter, but for especially those of us abroad of the previous generation, they seem to want to be buried at home. As a result, families go into debt big time to cover funeral home fees, plane fees, transport from lagos to destination. This does not include money for the actual burial. It kills me to see what pple are going through in the name of "taking someone home". Personally, like u, I don't care. As you said, when u r dead, u r dead and as my neighbor once told me: 1st week after death: u r mourned 2nd " " " : u r buried 3rd " " " : ur relatives discuss who is going to get what 4th week: your spouse goes hunting for another spouse. May sound ridiculous, but there is a lot of wisdom in the above ![]() |
Mine are: - Google for webmasters (a google search shd pull this up) - a book I bought off of amazon. Sorry, but at this time of the day, I don't remember the name ![]() |
Did they just have to show us her zit in the black and white photo? The damn thing ruined an otherwise lovely fantasy I had LOL |
Ndipe, Your last comment is what motivated me to come up with the ibibio website. http://www.geocities.com/myibibio Check it out and spread the word ![]() |
kajad, I don't understand your question about "start again" Pls clarify |
When in sec sch, there was this guy who would go off-campus, buy bread and biscuit and bring it back for sale. Another guy, son of the owner of KAN biscuit, would have his dad bring in the thing in cartons and he sold it to us from there. Just open your eyes to the need of your fellow students. I mean, simple stuff like taking photos can go a long way. 'hope this helps, |
I don't think there is a way, per se, to "deregister" a domain name. The way I understand it(please if you know otherwise, do chip in and make me stand corrected ):1) When you register a domain, it is usually for a certain amount of time 2) When that time comes, the name is up for renewal at which time you cd cancel and the name goes away 3) If before that time comes, u either don't pay the monthly fee (in the US) or you cancel your account with the hosting company, the name doesn't go away, but you lose access to the site and users get the "page not found" error when they try to pull up the site. I hope this helps |
exactly, if you do that, other than the usual quarrels couples have, u will do just fine. I always tell pple, dont try to change each other. I for example eat garri (aka eba) every day. I rarely go out to restaurants except on occasion, and maintain a waterleaf, pumpkin and bitterleaf and okra garden in my backyard. I am a traditionalist to the core ![]() Of course, there are the bad ones amongst us, but which culture or race doesn't have bad men or women? ![]() |
