Like others, i agree with the manner of approach. However, as to y they are always trying to convert you, tis the commission given to all christians by Jesus Christ himself, aka "the great commission": Mark 16:15 I hope this helps |
Sorry o, Me I no dey do graphics o ![]() At most, I will take a photoshop or fireworks comp from a designer, cut up the necessary pieces and slap them on a web page. That notwithstanding, I will support the site in whatever way I can. Cheers!! |
I believe it had one, but for whatever reason , it was disabled.Anyone care to chip in on this? |
Well, with the good advice you gave, i take you to be one of the smart Nigerians, but i wonder how you did not see where it says the site is only opens June 20th.Oga Kris, I don't know whether to take this as an insult or complement (and pls don't use the abused "respect is reciprocal" line in your response either )Anyways, speaking of usability, which is something I am also heavily involved in on the web (in fact, I just came back from a usability session, hence my being late to respond to this ), about 3 posts up, you did say:Ok guys the www.naijatopten.com site is up!This implies, to me anyways, that the site is up for viewing. With the tiny background at top left, all I looked at was that, and nothing else. If I did see a date, again having read up top that the site was up, I probably associated it with 20th June 2005, as technically there was no year stated on there. As for being smart, i no sabi dat one o! Some pple are known to say some pretty smart stuff but yet aren't exactly what you would call the sharpest knife in the drawer ![]() |
In my opinion, and I will speak for Nigeria, it is synonymous with Coke. When the internet began worldwide, so to speak, yahoo was "the man". So naturally, everyone signed up for an account. When the internet first hit Naija, I remember the ads back then "pay N500 to open a yahoo account". Of course pple flocked to go open one, until competition set in and it became free to have an account. Now, even with onset of google et al, since naijans all started out with yahoo, it is hard to change habits. What with free chat, and free accounts, what else do most pple in Naija surf the net for? Now, wetin remain na for person to name dem pikin yahoo (if not already) LOL As always my 2 cents. |
smartsoft, Just visited ur site and clicked on web dev. The page doesn't exist. Should I trust your company to handle a multi-million naira contract I have in mind? ![]() |
Of course, we are the happiest - we have no notion of monthly bills (the ones that exist are usually those we tend to ignore like light or are for stuff we don't use like water ). We operate for the most part with cash and so if we don't have, we don't spend. We build a house like say in the village and we don't worry about property taxes. After you build your own house, you don't worry of not, after taking out a 30 year loan, being able to pay on the 29th year 11 month loan, thus forfeiting the house, even if you paid on time for the past 29 years For those who pay rent, once they manage to come up with the 2 year advance, they don't worry about it for another 2 years. Of course we should be happy. Many take siesta ( I on the other hand operate on a maximum of 5 hrs of sleep), and actually go out and have fun. In a country with majority working as civil servants, people stroll in *generally speaking* whenever they choose, say they signed in at the right time, then turn around and leave again. Of course they will be happy. My happiest moments in life are when I go to Nigeria on vacation. If I vacation in the US, I still feel like I have to go to work. It has been wired into me somehow. In fact, when I get on the plane to return to the states, immediate depression sets in, because I know what is waiting for me LOL |
I reserve my comments. I just wanted to add the notifier so I can read the posts ![]() |
ajayi1, Suffice it to say that I have given enough reviews of sites, which have all pretty much said the same thing, that I would just say you should do a search on NL for "review" in this webmaster section. I reserve my comments on the flash esp cos I am not an authority in it. Personally, I try to avoid it cos of potential accessibility and SEO reasons, but I do know that it has its place, especially for sites that have to do with arts and artists. I will yield the remainder of my time to the flash folks on this forum ![]() |
No shakings Constantin. I just figured that since this is nairaland, that perhaps Nigeria would be first on the list. Oh well. By the way, I haven't been to Abuja and my only sources are the various naija movies I have seen of the place. I assume it must look good cos I haven't seen any newscast of the place, what with western media always looking to portray the negative and all. I look forward to the photos. Thanks in advance. |
kris, Just checked out the site. I saw no navigation (I literally clicked in a 100 different places, assuming it was hiddent) so I closed my window. As per your design contest, good idea. I would like to suggest something that would probably bring in more users and designs: How about each member who signs up pays a minimal fee. Then once a wk or so, you hold a contest for the best design for a subject area chosen by the members. Then the winner takes, say, 20 bucks or whatever you guys come up with. As the site gets more popular and gets more pple, u can then up the prize money accordingly. Before you know it, you could be on CNN and become overnight hits. In the event that u make it big, just remember the source ![]() I hope this helps. |
I think its greed. Also, if the prez, as davidylan says, intervened, especially financially, then he has set a precedent that will be hard to go against. Still, whether or not its my last WC appearance, still not an excuse to ask for $200K. $2K maybe but not $200K. |
That is what gets me davidylan - experienced countries don't ask that much. they mostly play for honor. Others act like they are doing their countries a favor by playing for them |
If i were them, I would look at the long-term. Play their hearts out and then sign major contracts with european clubs after the world cup. Even Ronaldo just turned down a $120million deal to play in the US, so who are they? |
Stupid pple. This first WC should be about heart and not money. Even if, $200K is plain too much. I mean, and sorry to say, but wdnt that pretty much be like Togo's budget for the entire year? ![]() |
Letz not forget davidylan, most of them come here as spies, only to send back what they have learnt and improve upon it with hopes of beating the west at their game ![]() |
Herez my 2 cents: According to a newsweek magazine I read, women are overtaking the guys in pretty much all aspects of life, but in particular education (in the US). I think the ratio of graduating females is 55% as opposed to 38% for males. What does that say? To me, naturally, people want to gravitate towards people they can relate to. Others are just superficial. Letz face it, a cab driver could be a better lover than a doctor, but how does that help at the company christmas party ("Hi, my name is Tunde and I own my own transport company - yeah right)? So, in my opinion, the women are looking for a man they can relate to, but such men are fast disappearing. Of course the down side is that they look for mr right who doesn't exist. Before you know it, they waste their lives bouncing from one man to the next (usually such men date them for ego purposes) and then they hit the biological junction and they end up marrying the person they should have married from the get-go. Of course, it is usually too late by then. They have become, sorry to say, 10th hand. Again, sorry to say this, but tis true. You can't and shdnt blame a woman because she knows what she wants and goes for it. On the other hand, there should be a trade-off. I remember my Dad telling me that back in college, in a sociology class, he was taught that 5 "tions" have ruined the traditional family set up: Globalization, Education, Industrialization, Liberation, and sorry but I can't remember the last one (sorry Dad ) |
Sorry but I am going to have to violate Hey, even Time magazine last year had "persons of the year" ![]() Prodgalson/Zahymaka/Farriel: I like them for their educative, and candid posts in the webmaster section. We learn from each other constantly as well as respect each others different opinions/skill sets on how to get things done. |
Kimba, China will b the next superpower, but not for the time-being. Probably not for another 20 or so years. In the meantime, sure, the US for example is incurring massive account deficits on account of trade with them and pple are always talking about China calling in their debt one day. Though idealistic, I in my opinion don't think it is realistic. If they did, Americans could react by saying that they wouldn't buy anymore chinese products (ala what they did to the french pre-iraq war) and the chinese would crumble. After all, the US is their largest trading partner. my 2 cents would be for him to study in Canada, yet perhaps take a minor in International Relations and/or do a summer course in China. That way, he is covered both ways. Take it or leave it, the west is where things happen and will happen for the foreseeable future. Then again, what do I know? ![]() |
Don't bring back memories o! My mouth don dey water LOL
[li]Agbalomo (aka star apple)[/li] [li]Manpower (roasted dry maize - until someone brought for me last week, I hadn't had any since 1993!!) When I go, maize is usually out of season (note I call it maize and not corn, which is what many pple from my experience back in naija are calling it, like oyibo )[/li][li]Grade 1 mango[/li] [li]Guava[/li] [li]Periwinkle in the shell (that de-shelled stuff isn't the same)[/li] [li]Pounded yam prepared in a mortar[/li] [li]Grapefruit with husk so thick and sweet, u can eat it too [/li]
I will stop for now. Most of these, sure, are in the states, but nothing beats that home flavor (dust, look, feel etc), sho gbo? ![]() |
I see the one person in the world I can't lie to - moi ![]() |
I have a buddy who schools in China right now. He says he is only there cos that was the only opportunity he had to leave the country. He says it is a closed country (news monitored, certain websites blocked - he cdnt even access nairaland when last we spoke ), etc), and the pple, due to closed society, have some -ve preconcieved notions of black pple in general. Not to mention you would have to learn Chinese sharp sharp. As I always say: don't let your need to leave the country make you do things you wdnt have done if you were still in the country. It may not work out as you expected. As always, my 2 cents |
All we r saaaayiing, give us Lagos and Abujaaaaa ![]() |
pretty long thread, so if I address something that you already have, let me know smartsoft. In general, static or dynamic, the best thing is to have at least 2 servers for testing prior to your code moving to production: development and staging. When you couple this with a good version control system, you can rollback to prior code. Of course, with a good regression testing plan, the worries of recent code breaking new code is reduced to a minimum. At work, we actually have 3 pre-production servers: Our local apache boxes, dev server and staging server. Bank of America (for those in the US) has 4: the aforementioned plus a pre-staging. Redundancy isn't necessarily a bad thing. So in summary, multiple pre-production servers, version control and regression testing are all a must for any serious site. thatz my 2 cents |
kisha, therez a modify button ![]() |
1 Corinthians 7:14 may help resolve any issues that any of you may have. In the end, if the 2 parties love each other enough to get married, then in my opinion, they should do so. Of course, on the Judgement day, the unbeliever won't be saved by virtue of the fact that they were married to a believer. Of course in todayz society, I would strongly suggest that the 2 parties discuss this prior to marriage. It goes beyond them - kids and how they are raised, colleagues, way of thinking, etc. This way, they don't end up being part of the divorce statistic. At least they both go into the marriage with both eyes wide open. thatz my 2 cents |
Having read every single post, including my own again, I think this dead horse has been beaten to a 2nd death ![]() The choice, as 7up says, and from the various threads, is clear - the US is best. Nice thread though. I can't remember a thread (other than "walmart in nigeria" that generated such responses. In the end, it's all a battle of ideas. I personally think that the mere fact that many countries have moved from communism to socialism to pseudo-capitalism (capitalism having been championed by the US), says a lot about the US. I mean, look at China. Is the US perfect? Nope. Which country is? As long as humans live in a place, that place is bound to be corrupt. It is the lesser of two evils that will prevail always. Once again, for those on both sides of the aisle that gave answers based on reason, as opposed to crappy rants, I troway salute o! I hereby am pulling my notification from this thread ![]() |
Hunter, She wdnt be working, but she would be "working" ![]() Shadow economy. Don't ask, don't tell. I am sure u grab my flow at this point ![]() |
In the US one has to grumpily toil away the days in utter despair in order to sustain one´s head above the water whereas in the UK you can work relatively care-free and brighten up your weekends with some splendid spells in the sun abroad or somewhere else on the relatively and hsitorically versatile British IslesConstantin, I think you hang around the wrong US crowd, smoke the wrong kind of crack, watch the wrong kind of movies or you are basing your assumptions on pure fantasy. In the span of less than 24 hrs, your comments have moved from annoying, to funny to outright lunacy! ![]() (para-quoting ) "vacationing on the british isles, jetting to paris for the weekend", please, give me a break. Even the english wreaks of fantasy. What novel are you reading at the moment? LOL |
