WebmastersGuidelines For Web Credibility by my2cents(op): 7:52pm On Jun 19, 2006
So, how can you boost your website's credibility?

Just thought I should share some of the codes of conduct we live by at my work place.

Am I not sooooo sweet? cool
[li]Make it easy to verify the accuracy of the info on your site[/li]
[li]Show that there's real organization behind your site[/li]
[li]Highlight the expertise in your organization and in the content/services you provide[/li]
[li]Show that honest and trustworthy people stand behind your site[/li]
[li]Make it easy to contact you[/li]
[li]Design your site so that it looks professional/appropriate for your purpose[/li]
[li]Make your site easy to use and useful as well[/li]
[li]Update your site's content often[/li]
[li]Use restraint with any promotional content (ads, offers,etc)[/li]
[li]Avoid errors of all types, no matter how small they may seem[/li]
I hope this helps. Now, go make some credible websites!! grin

Just kidding o!! smiley
WebmastersRe: My Web Site by my2cents(m): 7:06pm On Jun 19, 2006
I like the design and the colors. Definite difference b/w yours and NL.

However, scrolling down, it looks just like NL. Besides, in my opinion, if you wanted pple to post, it would probably make sense to move the topics to the top.

Just my 2 cents and I hope they come in handy smiley
Music/RadioRe: Lean With It, Rock With It. by my2cents(m): 6:12pm On Jun 19, 2006
unfortunately, living in atlanta, given the 6 or so FM stations I have programmed on my radio, thatz all I hear (that and other variations of dirty south songs). So I switched to talk radio/AM.

It got so ridiculous at some pnt, that going from one station to the next, there was literally a 10 second variation from the playing of one particular song to the next.

Na so so "lean wit it, snap yo fangers, boy i think they like me" . Even pidgin sounds better than ebonics. It got tiring after a while smiley
WebmastersRe: Stuck On Prototype by my2cents(m): 4:47am On Jun 19, 2006
I like what I see, but with a few modifications wink

- at the top, remove the extra "|" after "contact"

- make sure whatever nav links are at the header match the footer

- The offices info section should probably be centered

- if the company deals with more than just gypsum, perhaps you can recycle what is in the hand holding the "stone" (a quick javascript can do the trick).

Thatz all. Kudos!!
FoodRe: Is Food Scarce In Nigeria? by my2cents(m): 3:07pm On Jun 16, 2006
In my opinion food isn't scarce in Nigeria. However, what I would argue for is that certain types of food are scarce. If you disagree, how do you explain that the same N10 that could get you 10 cups of garri in the 80s won't even get you 1 cup now? wink

This to me is as a result of, but not limited to:

- Failure of some of our farmers/traders to take up modern technology so that foods that would have lasted for a while before going bad end up been thrown away after a few days.

- less and less pple taking up farming, choosing instead to do white-collar jobs

- more and more land set aside for foods meant for the international market, to the detriment of staple foods

- land fragmentation caused by the same land being (re-)divided among larger families

- most of us opting for subsistence farming as opposed to large-scale farming

As always, my 2 cents smiley
FashionRe: Cornrows (Hair Braiding) In Nigeria by my2cents(m): 8:59pm On Jun 15, 2006
IAH,

and where r those pple now? wink As a christian, knowing what u just told me, I would definitely not braid my hair, as doing so, as narrow-minded as it may sound, would mean I am supporting the sango worshippers lifestyle (I can just imagine the feathers I have ruffled with that statement grin).

In retrospect, I should modify my post to say, it isn't common to those in the Akwa Ibom area of the country. My bad wink
FashionRe: Cornrows (Hair Braiding) In Nigeria by my2cents(m): 8:50pm On Jun 15, 2006
What part of "African ancestry"? I can tell you definitely not Nigerian. I am, for the record, an opponent of male hair-braiding - I didn't grow up around it and so am not used to it. The worst ones are the ones like make you wonder if a chicken, rather than a human, braided it LOL

Sporting a rasta style is a different thing though - it denotes a religion/following and it looks natural (as a matter of fact, it is cheesy). Braiding just looks too feminine to rock my boat smiley

CareerRe: Help! I Want A Career In IT by my2cents(m): 7:44pm On Jun 15, 2006
Where/how to start:

- Read a lot of books

- Attend a lot of classes/seminars

- Get a server/dev environment where u can implement what uv learnt

- Give urself an assignment and implement it.

Whatz hot?

J2EE, PHP, JSP, AJAX, LAMP, to mention a few grin

Thatz my 2 cents. Am sure others will add theirs wink

Good luck!!
ProgrammingRe: Software Development And Marketing In Nigeria, How Can We Start It? by my2cents(m): 5:07pm On Jun 15, 2006
Simple,

Do ur homework on what package you can put out there that will add value to the society at large. Something either an individual or government can't do without. Then get some cool nollywood celeb to run a few advertisements for you on radio and tv.

Of course, at that point, just make sure you have the resources to meet demand, cos it will def sky-rocket.

Good luck!!

Could be that they don't have the same version of MS Word that you have.

I would like to recommend you export the word document to either Rich Text Format or PDF. Then send them both, to be on the same side. These 2 are pretty much universal.

I hope this helps.

I don't like the user login info over the map of Africa either. You can still do it if you must, but the way it is now doesn't look pretty at all.
WebmastersRe: Nigerian Webmasters' Association? by my2cents(m): 10:37am On Jun 12, 2006
I would more in favor of a user group as opposed to an association:

A user group is where you guys can meet up, socialize, learn the latest trends, arrange seminars, pick each other's brains, invites speakers, etc.

This is as opposed to an association as at least I have come to know it, in the Nigerian sense of the word, which has a potential of turning into a union of some sorts. We all know about the possible negative outcome of unions (of course, I could be wrong, since I haven't been there permanently in a while) - wage fixing, strikes, political wrangling, etc.

May not be worth much, but hey, it's my 2 cents on the matter grin
ProgrammingRe: Computer Science Degree Recommended For Programming Career? by my2cents(m): 5:17pm On Jun 11, 2006
I am currently working with 2 pple who have no comp sc degree but yet are one of our best - one in history, the other in arts shocked

Just wanted to add a word or 2. It has to do with something I hear not only here in the US but on this forum:

Just because a programming language is hard for you to understand or may seem too easy, does not mean it is "pathetic", "crappy" or any other variation of these words. You gotta b careful that in saying what you say you don't end up discouraging pple who would otherwise be fellow programmers. Every language has its purposes. In the end, it's all about your logic. Logic will always remain the same.

Remember, our fingers are not the same length. You may be a very smart C# programmer, but a very dumb panel beater. Everyone is smart in their own respect. Let us be careful in our choice of words.

Now that I hv that off my chest, time to go continue watching Mexico v Iran. I think someone just took a shot wink

Eeeh,

probably not JosBoy grin

Pple had expected the worst with respect to its value against the euro and its pretty stable right now.

To avoid being off-point here, letz start a new thread on this and I will contribute more wink

JosBoy,

Pretty sharp grin

Either you were atop that famous hill in Jos or that space needle building thingie in Toronto (abi na for Ottawa? I no sabi again o smiley)

Anyway, someone, probably from Canada designed that for me and I decided to use it. Even I didn't notice it wasn't cents the guy used LOL

To whom designed the logo for me: Can u redesign it so that it features US cents? Thanks smiley

WebmastersRe: New Website For The Critics by my2cents(m): 4:56am On Jun 11, 2006
After recovering from a bout of dizziness, I said to myself, "this is the very first time that I will admit that I am not as dumb as I thought" smiley

No offense man, but what in the world were you trying to accomplish with the "Ali baba and the night of 1001 tales" menus? Are you designing that site for yourself (in which case, it looks good and your knowledge of flash is stellar cool) or for pple who may actually find the menu thing in particular very, very annoying?

I rest my case.

Other than that, it looks okay to me.

WebmastersRe: Why Is Javascript So Crappy by my2cents(m): 4:47am On Jun 11, 2006
Kambo,

I wdnt go as far as saying javascript is crappy, especially just because you can't get your code to work. If it were that "crappy", how come some pretty smart pple have been able to use it to create some pretty snazzy apps, courtesy of ajax? wink

Anyway, as kazey said, a better understanding of what you are trying to do, preferably with your entire code, is essential.

Looking at what you have so far, and I could be wrong, it begs the question:

What did you try to write? document.getElementById("element_name"wink or document.getElementById(element_name)?

If this is the case, and again I am pulling straws here, then the former would be right.

Give us some more rope please grin
PoliticsRe: Obasanjo's Admission Of Failure On Electricity (NEPA) by my2cents(m): 8:00pm On Jun 09, 2006
Letz not forget, it was in 1999 or 2000 when OBJ promised that come Dec. 31st 2000, there would be continuous electricity supply.

If my memory serves me right (and it often does wink), I was in Uyo on that very day and there was no light for at least 2 or 3 hours.

Call it an empty promise, call it counting chicks b4 they hatch, either way, it didn't happen.

Na wa o!

That's right Drusilla:

America practices representative democracy, but is actually a republic (I reserve my comments on the "constitutional" part of your answer though wink).

Remember, even the pledge of allegiance states ", and to the Republic for which it stands, "

Expect another one tomorrow guys smiley

WebmastersRe: Website Review by my2cents(m): 3:59pm On Jun 08, 2006
data,

I am actually impressed smiley

Just a few points of note:

- In the header, y is "IO NIG" in white?

- change "sportlight" to "spotlight"

- In the header, you mispelled Ibadan

- You have too many images on the site and some are quite heavy. I suggest making the header a css background image and replacing the words with actual text. "Ibadan at large" in content area should also be text

- I assume that when all is said and done, your nav menus will hv some sort of highlight to aid the user

- Include a footer and site map.

That's all from me. Good Job!! smiley
