Universities receive admission applications from thousands of aspiring students. For instance, Harvard University had 39, 041 applications for her undergraduate programs in 2018 and accepted only 5.4%, University of Oxford had 24, 645 graduate students applying and accepting 0.215% in 2015/2016 session. What about the California Institute of Technology? She had an acceptance rate of 8%. In 2017, Wharton Business School had an acceptance rate of 19.3% while London Business School in 2015 had an acceptance rate of 26%. What about the renowned Harvard Business School? In 2017, she had 11%! Although, these are for schools that reveal her acceptance rates. What these statistics tell us is that it is highly competitive and rigorous to get admitted into top graduate programs globally. And even for less prestigious institutions, as the numbers of applications will swell.

Just like you don’t automatically get a job because you graduated with a first class, getting accepted into graduate studies goes beyond one’s grades – which are usually impressive. These are the factors that play during the application process:

· CV/Resume

· Letters of recommendation

· English proficiency tests’ results (this depends on the school and nationality of applicant).

· Results of standardised tests (GMAT/GRE/SAT/TOEFL/IELTS/LSAT)

· Transcripts

· Personal Statement/Statement of Purpose

The first five can make your application a success. How you deal with the last – personal statement/statement of purpose – can mar the application.


WHAT IS A PERSONAL STATEMENT/STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

A personal statement is an essay that describes the process of your strengths. Whether you are applying for a scholarship, graduate study or an MBA program, you would be required to write a personal statement where you will have to create a logical connection between your past, present and future. This includes your undergraduate experience (or high school for aspiring undergrads), work experience and future aspirations.

On the other hand, statement of purpose is an aspect of one’s application to a graduate school or a professional program that tells the admissions committee who you are, what you intend doing and the impact in the society. You also need to explain how the school will help your career aspirations. There are usually little or differences between both. Some schools term it “personal statement”, others say “Goals”, “Essay” etc.

A SoP or PS is needed to convince admission officers or scholarship awarding bodies on why you should be chosen. The requirements differ across institutions, disciplines and departments. But the underlying theme remains: Tell us why you should be given the scholarship or admission? The bodies in charge of accepting your PS or SoP want to see your enthusiasm, charisma, desire and character. The essay should not only be convincing but also exhibit innate attributes. See your SoP/PS as a cover letter conveying why you are the right fit for the job position. Admission officers don’t usually individuals with no record of doing something extra-ordinary, but rather they desire individuals who are balanced and have a fair view of the world. Ditto for scholarship board members who desire to see why you want the sponsorship and what you would do with it.

Furthermore, applicants should see this write-up as the opportunity to explain why they are the right candidates for the program and why the program suits them. As this provides the occasion to further discuss your strengths, competencies, values, goals and experiences. This makes you a unique candidate and not just making up the numbers.

For an undergraduate program, tutors are not only interested in your academic ability but also potential. They desire to see you are truly engaged to the course of study. These include relevant extracurricular activities, engagement with the course of subject. Don’t write your personal statement as a checklist of required achievements but explain what motivated you to apply for the course and how your life experiences align with it.

On Safety, I'd give it to Ebonyi, Kebbi... Osun is safe to some extent tho but when it comes to ritualists, fear the state.

On Low cost of living, I would take Ondo state ahead of Ekiti. Ondo state contributes more to Agricultural sector than Ekiti state.

A friend of mine studying microbiology took up medicine and surgery in his third year of microbiology in same school. He did excellently well. It's just that he read everywhere even in church.

Microbiology is in the larger family of MBBS at least in first 3 years. It's an additional stress in the same domain and even at that I'm certain Part I course requirements for both courses are the same.

Real stress will start in his 2nd year of MBBS and simultaneously handling final year husstles of microbiology. And the reading workload for microbiology would have greatly reduced then having only stress of mbbs, and final year projects.

And what were their CGPAs as at Part 3 in both courses? Even if they did well ceteris paribus, they're are like 0.1% the other 99.9% are the ones who had 2 courses concurrently and didn't do so well in both courses. From lectures and examinations clashing to Avalanche of references. Let's not delve into the intricacies sef. The best case scenario is someone pursuing both courses in the same school which is very criminal.

Truth is it is possible, but what's the objective of taking any undergraduate course...To sufficiently learn enough to effectively translate and put to use the knowledge for the benefit of human environment having passed necessary requirements which includes but not limited to Quizes, Exams, Assignments,Thesis, Labworks, Field trips, internships and all necessary knowledge exposures.

Do you know that some undergraduate degrees are so laborious that if one has a reference in a particular course, one doesnt have enough space to re-register that particular course immediately in the following session due to work load and exhausted credit units. At times when you have the space, exams clash. Now imagine pursuing two different undergraduate degrees. Even in schools that allow for summer resits it is counter productive...

The OP asked a legality question. It is outrightly illegal.
Ideally the JAMB issues Matric Number to all undergraduates, so if things are done normally Jamb's database should even eliminate biometric data that appear in any Tertiary application who's been matriculated and whose duration of study has not termed. This will even prevent the person from 2nd admission until he concludes the first one or until rustication whichever case happens first.

But Nigeria is still crawling (strikes and all...) so anything is possible. I personally know a family friend that ran a degree program and HND concurrently. (OAU and Fed Poly Ede).

The multinationals you mentioned don't pay peanuts. A security guard is well paid. A level 16officer Director earns about 160,000 if remove tax, pensions, and other deductions, the figure hangs between 130,000 and 145,000. A director in GL16 would probably have spent 22-26years for professionals and 12-15yrs if it's Administrative Officers Cadre.

A level 8 officer is considered a senior officer but earns less than 50,000... Tax and other deductions drops the money lower. Now that figure halved will reveal how ridiculous the pay is. If the worker has no commiments, no loan deductions or cooperative, the take home is less than 20,000.

Aregbesola isn't even paying the minimum 18,000 which expires today. I said today because FG would soon announce a new one in 2018 that's higher and I bet you it will be backdated effective from January 1, 2018.

Ironically, Aregbesola is one of the few governors in the new minimum wage committee set up by Buhari.

Osun state allocation did not drop because of international oil price that fell, it was because of Huge International loans that the governor purportedly got to execute projects. These loans have repayment conditions that are daunting. The balance of payment deficits for Osun is deducted from Federal monthly FAAC and our allocation nosedived. Aregbesola brought Osun into the mess and upon himself but it was easy for him to blame GeJ at the time.

The condition became worse when crude oil price fell and every state was complaining. Aregbesola blamed it on Crude oil and recession coz GEJ was out and his dumb General PMB is president... Bailouts came and he couldn't fulfil responsibilities due to wickedness and greed.

Now we are out of recession but Osun is still very sickly. Osun had been very bankrupted even before recession came due to profligate policies and pilfering projects which the governor coned the people to believe are being executed in first tenure. There was serious capital flight in first term.
