Buhari tasks farmers on massive food production, says“no money for food importation”

President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged Nigerian farmers on the need to embark on massive productive agricultural activities this farming season as Nigeria has no money for food importation.

The president gave the challenge shortly after observing this year’s Eid prayer alongside members of his family and few presidential aides at the presidential villa, Abuja, on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Eid-El-Fitr prayer was observed in line with the protocol against mass gathering issued by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, while the protocol of social distancing was also exhibited during the two-raka’at prayer.

President Buhari, who spoke to State House correspondents, said: “I hope the raining season would be bountiful, so that we get a lot of food.

“I wish the farmers will go to farms and save the lives so that we can produce what we need in sufficient quantity so that we don’t have to import food.

“In any, we don’t have any money to import food. So we must produce what we are going to eat.’’

On the COVID 19 pandemic, President Buhari reiterated his advice to Nigerians to strictly adhere to guidelines and measures put in place against the spread of the deadly virus in the country.

He noted that the pandemic had reduced both developed and developing nations to the same level, and advised Nigerians to always be careful so as to avoid infections.

He said: “Nigerians can see that the COVID-19 has reduced us, both the developing and developed countries, to the same level. In fact, we have least casualties than they we have.

“So, it’s a very frightening development and I advised Nigerians to be very careful and take the advice of the Ministry of Health. Ministers of Health have been doing very well, speaking and educating the citizens on the deadly virus.

“So Nigeria, we should be very careful.’’

Politics / VIDEO: Reps Begin Review, Probe Of The Nigerian Power Sector by MYZOLE: 1:09pm On May 23, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOGk10RpWE8

The House of Representatives has mandated its Committees on Power and Privatization to review the extant laws, regulations, policies, and contractual arrangement guiding the Power Sector Reform.

The Green Chamber also directed the Committees to review and investigate activities of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry and submit the report within four weeks.

The House took these decisions on Tuesday at plenary upon the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance on: “Need to Review and Investigate the Nigerian Power Sector”, sponsored by Ifeanyi Momah (APGA, Anambara).

Presenting the motion, Momah said the House noted that before 1998, the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) was almost exclusively responsible for electricity generation, transmission and distribution in Nigeria.

He said due to this, the Federal Government birthed the Electricity (Amendment) Decree 1998 and the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) (Amendment) Act 1998 which once passed, terminated the monopoly status of NEPA and invited private sector participation in the electricity sector.

According to the lawmaker, this eventually led to the National Electric Power Policy of 2001which served the purpose of kicking off the power sector reform in Nigeria, leading to several other reforms over the last two decades.

Momah said the House also noted that this reform process led to the National Assembly passing into law, the Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act 2005 which provided for:

“An Act to provide for the formation of companies to take over the functions, assets, liabilities and staff of NEPA to develop competitive electricity markets, to establish the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission; to provide for the licensing and regulation of the generation, transmission, distribution and supply of electricity; to enforce such matters as performance standards, consumer rights and obligations; to provide for the determination of tariffs; and to provide for matters connected with or incidental to the foregoing.

“It aIso saw the change of name from National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) to Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). This development removed the monopoly of electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and sales from the former NEPA”.

He said the House was concerned that despite government regulatory framework, huge expenditure and private sector participation/investment to meet long term reform objectives which says that deliver quality, reliable and efficient electricity to consumers at reasonable prices, constant supply of adequate electricity is still a challenge in Nigeria.

The Ihiala Federal Constituency representative argued that as an indication of failure to achieve the gains of the power sector reform in Nigeria, the House further notes that there is need to review the Power Sector Reforms.

The 37-year-old lawyer said the House was: “concerned also that in the light of unstable gas and power supply, and due to critical requirement of power as a major catalyst for the industrialization of Nigeria, job creation, fiscal revenue generation and economic diversification, there is a need to identify the root causes of the continued moribund nature of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) and recommend a road map for the revitalization of the sector to the House for further legislative actions”.

Health / NCDC DG Speaks On The Differences Between COVID-19 And Malaria by MYZOLE: 10:01pm On May 15, 2020

NCDC DG speaks on the differences between COVID-19 and Malaria hours after Raymond Dokpesi demanded for answers

Chikwe Iheakweazu, the Director-General of the National Center for Disease Control today spoke on the between the ravaging viral disease, COVID-19 and Malaria.

This comes after the chairman of DAAR communications, Raymond Dokpesi who was discharged from an Isolation center in Abuja on Thursday May 14, asked what the differences were because according to him, all the drugs given to him at the Isolation center were anti-malaria drugs. Dokpesi while speaking to newsmen after his discharge, said

''I still have doubts in my mind. I still want to be properly educated. What is the difference between COVID-19 which is a virus and Malaria which is caused by mosquitos because every medication we were given was malartia medication. Some people, before they were told they were COVID-19 positive, they were tested in reputable laboratories and hospitals in Abuja and what they found was that they had a lot of malaria parasites in their bloodstream. So when did malaria become synonymous to COVID-19?''

A reporter at the daily briefing of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19, threw this question to the NCDC boss and here is what he had to say

''I think we all know COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by a virus, Malaria is caused by a parasite. They are completely different diseases.

However, many diseases present exactly the same way in the beginning, Yellow fever presents the same way with fever at the beginning, Lassa the same way, malaria the same way.

So, the initial presentation of a febrille illness is similar across diseases. There is no specific treatment for COVID-19 so what clinicians do is to manage your symtoms so that your body recovers as quickly as possible.

You can have Malaria and COVID-19. That you have COVID-19 doesn't prevent you from having Malaria and if you are in a hospital for one month, you could definitely be co-infected by both of them.

So there are many reasons why people receive similar treatments but they are two completely different diseases with different pathogenesis.'' he said

I am worried, I see danger ahead- SGF, Boss Mustapha, warns as Nigerians continue to flout COVID19 guidelines

Boss Mustapha, chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Boss Mustapha, says he is worried and sees danger ahead as the ease of the lockdown entered day three today.

At the press briefing of the taskforce in Abuja today, Mustapha says the outright disregard for all COVID19 prevention guidelines only potent danger for Nigerians even as the battle against COVID19 continues. In his words

Today I am a little bit sober because of the dangers that I see ahead and I referred to it in my speech.

I said early assessment of the ease of lockdown phase, indicates that Nigerians are yet to come to terms with the deadliness and the virulent nature of COVID19 and this gives us concern on the high possibility of increased shedding of the virus to hitherto unaffected persons and populations.

I went ahead to mention some of the worries. One of it is total disregard for the protocols that government has issued which includes social distancing, wearing of mask, personal hygiene, ban on inter state travels. We have just thrown them to the wind.

I concluded with a very subtle reminder that the overall assessment of compliance with the measures and the outcome of models we have developed, point in the direction of danger ahead.'' he said

He added that the only way the danger ahead can be averted is for everyone to have personal discipline, increased awareness and enforcement.

The one month lockdown by President Buhari was eased off on Monday May 4 and was largely characterised by outright disregard for all COVID19 prevention guidelines.

No one is exempt. It is a matter that can reach anyone, be you high or low, rich or poor; because even though the virus was brought into the country from overseas, by a privileged person, it is everyone in the country that is suffering.

Since no one can jump on a plane and run to go treat elsewhere, we should now look at the health sector of Nigeria; because it is obvious that we have to solve our problems ourselves; and we should now learn to think inwards.

He further stressed that its not only our health sector that needs urgent attention, but other industries like the agricultural sector which we have been running away from all these while.

In the video, the man is seen telling the members of the task force that he's on his way to an important assignment. He was asked why he's not wearing a face mask and he responded that he's a native doctor and Coronavirus is not a threat to him.

He said he is not afraid of the virus and can treat patients if they are brought to him.

"This is my father's land. This is my father's land oh. Someone will be going on his way and you people will be subjecting him to abuse," he protested as he was led to a canopy to sit.

"What you people are doing now has repercussions," he warned the task force in Igbo.

"Look at my neck," he said, pointing to the strings of beaded necklace he was wearing.

"The assignment I'm going on now is not something... What I'm going for is a very serious matter. I'm telling you the truth."

"But why are you not wearing your face mask," an officer asked.

And the native doctor responded: "I'm telling you that I'm a native doctor. I don't have problem with diseases. I will treat that your Coronavirus. Bring me a patient."

He continued after sitting: "You people are insulting your ancestors. You're insulting the god of the Igbo land."

He was offered hand sanitizer to apply on his hands but he rejected it, saying: "I don't need that thing."

He went on to speak about our ancestors and how they treated themselves with traditional knowledge.

He added: "If others are afraid of diseases, you will join them in being afraid of diseases.

"A White man will be scared of disease, you Africans, that are hardcore Igbolites and know that it is traditional, this is what we do, we are herbalists..."
