Crime › How Onyebuchi Anele Died After He Was Shot In Face With Police Tear Gas by NaijaCover(op): 2:21pm On May 24, 2024 |
A resident of the Kubwa area in the Bwari Local Council in Abuja identified as Onyebuchi Anele was reportedly shot in the face with a tear gas canister by a police officer.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 22.
An eyewitness recounted to Leadership Newspaper that the deceased was on his way home from work when the incident occurred.
The eyewitness said the deceased “hit an okada man and his passenger and after stopping and making sure the accident victims were okay, decided to head home in the Haj Estate when policemen arrived the scene.”
The eyewitness elaborated that trouble ensued when the policemen, upon arriving at the scene, insisted that the deceased accompany them to their station, despite the departure of the okada man and his passenger.
This disagreement escalated into a quarrel, culminating in the policeman firing the tear gas canister directly into the deceased’s face at close range.
Widely circulated pictures and videos showed Anele bleeding from his face with a metallic object embedded in it.
However, the Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh, in a statement on Friday said the deceased was shot dead through “accidental discharge.”
Adeh confirmed that the tragic incident happened in the Byazhin community in Kubwa, Abuja on Wednesday at about 9:45 pm.
She stated that the Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Benneth Igweh, has ordered an investigation into the incident.
Anele was reportedly taken to the Kubwa General Hospital and later referred to the National Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 8 am on Thursday. Source: https://punchng.com/man-dies-after-being-shot-in-face-with-police-tear-gas/

A Middle-aged woman identified as Mrs. Ibidunni Awotunde was on Wednesday crushed to death by a moving truck which shattered her skull at the popular Olomoore Hausa Market of Abeokuta metropolis in Ogun State.
Ibidunni was crushed after a yet-to-be-identified commercial motorcycle rider popularly referred to as “okada” knocked her down while waiting to board a taxi home after her shopping at the market.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the okada rider, who was plying on the direction prohibited by traffic laws (one-way) earlier hit the deceased, a single parent and mother of three, making her to fall infront of the moving truck on the already narrowed road by trading activities and indiscriminate cyclists parking.
It however took the quick intervention of the Supervisory Counselor for Works, Abeokuta North local government, Hon. Kabir Ayoola to douse the tension generated by Ibidunni’s death before escalating into a breakdown of law and order.
While the driver of the truck was arrested along with the truck to the nearest police station, the okada rider escaped from the scene, leaving his bike behind which was also towed to the Lafenwa Police Station in Abeokuta.
Traders, residents, as well as other stakeholders in Abeokuta have called on Governor Dapo Abiodun-led government to seize the incident in evolving means through which activities of commercial motorcyclists will be regulated in the area to prevent the reoccurrence of the situation.
The Supervisory Counselor, Hon. Ayoola, who spoke with LEADERSHIP, said more harm could be done to the people of the area if the activities of the okada riders’, most of whom are from the Republic of Benin are not regulated.
He particularly requested that the Ogun State Ministry of Transportation should evacuate all the “Okada” riders from the roadside, provide them a shelter and regulate their activities.
He added that “those okada riders should have identifiable route numbers to enable security operatives track them down whenever they commit offenses.
“Had it being that the okada riders were properly registered in the state, it would have been so easy to track down this particular one who committed this crime”. Source: https://leadership.ng/woman-hit-by-okada-crushed-to-death-by-moving-truck-in-ogun/

A Police Operative on patrol at Kubwa, Abuja, on Wednesday night, allegedly shot and killed a father of one, Onyebuchi Anele, with a teargas canister after a minor incident involving a motorcyclist.
The incident happened close to Haj Estate, where the deceased lived with his young wife and one daughter.
An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, while speaking to LEADERSHIP when our correspondent visited the scene, said: “the deceased, while on his way home, hit an okada man and his passenger and after stopping and making sure the accident victims were okay, decided to head home in the Haj Estate when policemen arrived the scene.”
The eyewitness further explained that trouble started when the policemen, who arrived the scene, decided that the deceased must follow them to their station even after the okada man and his passenger had left the scene to go. The ensuing altercation triggered quarrel, which led to the policeman shooting the teargas canister into the eye of the deceased at a close range.
The witness explained that the church members of the deceased and his neighbours in the estate came out and took the deceased to Kubwa General Hospital after which, he was referred to National Hospital, where he eventually died around 8am on Thursday.
Friends of the deceased, who were in the hospital with him until his death, said the issue had affected his wife emotionally.
“The woman started behaving as if she wanted to get mad. Small time she will sit, a little more time she moves with force and starts running away. She was smuggled into a vehicle and hurriedly whisked away. We had to deceive her that her husband was still alive whereas the corpse had been deposited in the mortuary,” one of his friends, Mr Ndubuisi Nwaneri, said.
However, when the FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, was contacted over the incident, she said she would get back to LEADERSHIP with more details, which she has not done at press time. Source: https://leadership.ng/trigger-happy-policeman-kills-father-of-1-over-okada-accident-in-abuja/

The eyewitnesses blamed the crash which occurred at about 5.30pm, on the driver of the bus who was on top speed without considering the nature of the highway.
