A popular Catholic priest in the Onitsha Diocese of Anambra State, Reverend Father Basil Gbuzuo, has been kidnapped by yet-to-be identified gunmen.

The news of the priest’s abduction was contained in a release by the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha dated May 16, 2024.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, around 8 am along the Eke Nkpor-Obosi bypass.

The statement also added that His Grace, Most Rev Valerian Okeke, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha, had called on all Christ’s faithful and people of goodwill to pray for the quick and safe release of the priest.

The Archdiocese said it was also intensifying efforts to secure Fr Gbuzuo’s freedom, while committing the priest to “powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Priests, for his speedy release from the hands of his kidnappers.”

The statement signed by the Chancellor of the Diocese, Rev Fr Prudentius E. Aroh, read in part, “With sadness, we write to inform the general public of the kidnap of one of our priests, Rev. Fr. Basil Gbuzuo.

“The sad incident occurred yesterday morning, Wednesday, May 15, 2024, along Eke Nkpor-Obosi bypass, about 8am.

“He is a priest in residence at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, Ogidi. Until now, the abductors have not established any contact with anyone.

“His Grace, Most Rev Valerian M. Okeke, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha, invites all Christ’s faithful and all men and women of goodwill to earnestly pray for the quick and safe release of the priest as we intensify our efforts to ensure his freedom.

“We commend our brother, Fr Basil, to the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Priests, for his speedy release from the hands of his kidnappers.”

Reacting to the development in a statement Thursday evening, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, said the police had launched a manhunt for the abductors of the priest.

The PPRO’s statement read, “Anambra Police Command has launched a manhunt for the abductors and possible rescue of Fr Basil Chukwuemeka, which sad incident occurred at Nkpor Junction, Onitsha.

“The Command is already working with some eyewitnesses to the incident in the ongoing operation

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, while addressing the Catholic priests, allayed their fears and assured them that the Command would do everything to rescue the priest unhurt and arrest the abductors.”

No fewer than 18 travellers were feared dead in a crash on the Umuahia-Enugu axis of the Port Harcourt Enugu Highway on Thursday morning.

It was gathered that the accident occurred at a police checkpoint around the Lokpanta area of Abia State in the wee hours of today.

An 18-seater commercial bus was at the checkpoint awaiting police clearance when a truck driver lost control and rammed into them killing the driver and all the passengers.

Mr Bananas Okereke, an eyewitness, told our reporter on a telephone that the bodies of victims still littered the scene at 8:20 am.

He said: “The road is blocked by protesting bus drivers and other motorists who are asking that the policemen who caused the accident be brought back to the scene.”

“Colleagues of the bus driver and other road users have taken over the road, demanding Justice for the victims. They vowed to remain there until Governor Alex Otti visits the scene.”

Terrible Bad News, Coming From KANO STATE
CrimeMissing Father Of Three Found Stabbed To Death In Kano by NaijaCover(op): 5:20pm On May 16, 2024
A father of three, Emeka Eje, who went missing has been found dead in Hotoro Quarters, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Circumstances surrounding his death are still sketchy at the time of filing this report but it was suspected that the commercial motorcyclist was stabbed to death by thieves who also made away with his bike.

His lifeless body was found abandoned in a location on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, three days after he was reported missing.

A close family source who confirmed the incident to LIB on Wednesday, May 15, said the deceased recently lost his father and was preparing for the burial.

According to the source, Emeka left home for work on Saturday night, May 11, and never returned.

LIB gathered that the family had reported the case at a police station and checked various hospitals.

A search for the man which began on Sunday, yielded no fruit until Tuesday when he was found dead.

“According to the information I got from them because I 'm based in Lagos, the wife said that her husband came to her shop on Saturday night, around 8pm. She served him food and the man entered his bike and left," the source narrated.

"According to my sister, the man always works at night. He doesn't work in the daytime. He picked a passenger from the park to a location.

"The wife waited till Sunday morning when he normally came back. She became worried and went to alert my sister that she hasn't seen her husband.

"My sister told her that it's too early and that her husband probably decided to work more before returning home.

"But people started panicking when he still didn't return at about 10am and his phone number was unavailable.

"They went to the Okada union to make an inquiry. Those people said that they saw him at about 10pm on Saturday night when he picked a passenger and left.

"They made complaints to the police station and searched for him everywhere, including hospitals, but all effort proved abortive

"They continued the search on Monday when information had circulated in the area. During the search, some people showed the family a video of a man lying lifeless on the road with stab wounds

“That was how they found him. The body was recovered on Tuesday and deposited at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital mortuary. That's all I can say at the moment,” the source added.
