Crime › Catholic Priest, Passenger Die In Niger Flood by NaijaCover(op): 4:17am On May 27, 2025 |
A Catholic priest, Reverend Father James Omeh, parish priest of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Gulu, Lapai Local Government Area, alongside his passenger, reportedly died after being swept away by strong floodwater over the weekend.
A source from the area revealed that the tragic incident occurred on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at about noon, when the deceased, who was also coordinator of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Lapai LGA, travelling in his Hilux vehicle, arrived at the collapsed bridge on the Lapai-Gulu Road, which had been destroyed by torrential rainfall the previous night.
It was gathered that Father Omeh tried to make a U-turn to head towards Duma village; however, his Hilux vehicle was overwhelmed by the strong floodwaters from the collapsed bridge.
Despite his efforts, the priest and his passenger, identified as Charity John, were swept away in the vehicle they were travelling in.
Their bodies were later recovered with the help of local volunteers and the Sarkin Ruwa (King of Water) from a nearby village.
Sources from the community said the Lapai-Gulu Road, where the incident occurred, has been a major concern for the community due to its poor condition.
They explained that members of the community have been calling on the government to urgently intervene to prevent further accidents.
In a related development, the Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has condoled the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and the Christian community in the state over the tragic death of the reverend father, which occurred on Saturday.
Bago, in a statement in Minna on Monday by the Special Adviser on Communication, Media and Strategy, Jonathan Vatsa, described the tragic death of the Catholic priest as painful and very unfortunate, noting that his passing is a great loss to CAN, the Christian community, and the state at large.
He praised the late priest for his commitment to community peacebuilding and religious harmony in the area.
He noted that Father Omeh would be remembered for his recent efforts to promote unity and peaceful coexistence in Lapai Local Government Area, including a courtesy visit to the Emir of Lapai and other stakeholders.
The governor extended his heartfelt sympathy to CAN, the Catholic community, and the priest’s family, praying for his eternal rest. Source: https://dailypost.ng/2025/05/26/catholic-priest-passenger-die-in-niger-flood/

The Katsina State Police Command has arrested a 25-Year-Old Housewife, Rabi’a Labaran, for the alleged murder of her co-wife, Zainab Lawal, 30, following a violent domestic altercation in Daura town.
The tragic incident occurred late on May 24, 2025, behind Dadi Primary School in the Sabon Gari area of Daura. According to the police, a heated dispute between the two women escalated into a fatal confrontation. Their husband, Nasir Yusuf, returned home from the market at about 11:00 p.m. to find Zainab’s lifeless body bearing multiple stab wounds.
The police were immediately alerted, and a team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) rushed to the scene. The victim was transported to the Federal Medical Centre, Daura, where she was confirmed dead.
During the investigation, Rabi’a Labaran reportedly confessed to the killing, claiming that a misunderstanding between her and Zainab turned physical, culminating in the fatal stabbing.
Confirming the arrest, Katsina State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Shehu, condemned the act and urged members of the public to shun domestic violence and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
“Disputes should be resolved through lawful channels. Taking the law into one’s hands only deepens the crisis and erodes the rule of law,” he said.
The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that justice is served in the case, noting that investigations are ongoing and the suspect remains in custody pending further legal action. An early morning accident in the Alausa area of Ikeja, Lagos, over the weekend left four passengers seriously injured after a commercial bus crashed into a streetlight pole, allegedly due to drunk driving.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, confirmed that the incident involved a fully loaded commercial bus (registration number: KTU 69 YJ), which veered off course and collided forcefully with the roadside infrastructure.
Preliminary findings indicate that the driver, believed to be under the heavy influence of alcohol, lost control of the vehicle, causing a high-impact crash that sent shockwaves through the vicinity. A couple seated mid-row were among the most critically injured, alongside another male and female passenger.
LASTMA operatives stationed nearby responded swiftly, executing a coordinated rescue that involved stabilizing the victims at the scene before handing them over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS. The injured were subsequently transported to the Trauma and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate for further treatment.
Officials say no fatalities were recorded, and other passengers escaped with minor or no injuries.
The Lagos State Police Command, through its Alausa Division, secured the accident site throughout the rescue operation, ensuring smooth emergency response and preserving evidence for further investigation.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, strongly condemned the reckless behaviour of driving under the influence. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to curbing such infractions through ongoing advocacy and intensified monitoring across Lagos motor parks.
“Don’t Drink and Drive,” he emphasized, noting that LASTMA’s Monitoring and Surveillance Unit remains actively engaged in sensitizing commercial drivers on road safety regulations.
Mr Bakare-Oki extended his sympathies to the injured passengers and wished them a swift recovery, while urging commuters and drivers alike to prioritize safety at all times. Source: https://dailypost.ng/2025/05/25/many-injured-as-drunk-driver-crashes-bus-into-streetlight-in-lagos/

Suspected herdsmen have shot a Catholic priest along the volatile Makudi-Naka road in Benue State. The Catholic priest, Rev Fr.Solomom Atongo was attacked on Saturday evening. A statement by Rev.Joseph Beba, who is the Chairman, Diocesan Priests, revealed that Rev. Atongo was shot on Makurdi-Naka road on his way from Naka, headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area. The victim is the priest in charge of St Johns Quasi Parish, Jimba. Rev Atongo was said to be in critical condition as he was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment. The Makurdi-Naka road has become the epicenter of herdsmen violence in the past two years. The road has been abandoned due to the activities of hoodlums who kidnap and kill people on the road. DAILY POST gathered that Fr. Atongo was in the company of two people when the hoodlums struck. After shooting the priest and thinking he was dead, the herders reportedly whisked away the other persons to an unknown destination.
