Travel › Two LAUTECH Students, Driver Burnt To Death In Road Crash by NaijaCover(op): 9:20pm On Sep 28, 2023 |
Two People traveling in a bus conveying some final year students of Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso, returning from a picnic, along Osogbo/Ifon/Oyo Boundary road, have been burnt to death in an accident late Wednesday evening.
Five other occupants were rescued by the operatives of Osun Ambulance Scheme that responded to the distress call from the scene of the accident which happened near Ojutu Bridge, Ilobu.
A resident of Okinni, identified as Adeyanju, who spoke to our correspondent on Thursday, said the driver of the bus conveying the victims, had hit a commercial motorcyclist in the town, and was trying to escape the rage of some angry residents chasing after him.
“Few meters from Ojutu Bridge, the driver lost control of the vehicle and the bus somersaulted and caught fire. Some people were rescued before the fire could spread, but three people were burnt to death. Operatives of O’Ambulance Scheme came around to rescue some of the victims,” Adeyanju said.
During an interview with our correspondent, the Head of Operations, Elizabeth Arowosafe, said the organisation received the distress call around 9:50pm on Wednesday that a bus conveying some final year students of LAUTECH, returning from a picnic was involved in the accident.
She said, “We responded around 9:53pm. I was told the driver had hit someone in Okinni and was speeding to avoid some people around the area chasing after him, when the incident happened.
“The driver alongside a lady and a male student were burnt to death. We were able to rescue 5 people. We rushed them to UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital in Osogbo. The hospital did well. In fact, there was no enough space to accommodate the injured people and we had to leave one of our stretchers for them to use.
“We could not recognise the dead victims. They were travelling inside a bus. I learnt that the occupants of the bus are final year students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, who went to Erin-Ijesa waterfall for an excursion.
“One of the injured students confirmed to us that they were coming from an excursion. She gave us names of victims, but she didn’t have the strength to name the others.”
Also commenting on the crash, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Agnes Ogungbemi, said the accident was caused by violation of speed limit which led to loss of control. Source: https://punchng.com/two-lautech-students-driver-burnt-to-death-in-road-crash/

Crime › Anambra Man Arrested For Beating Wife, Burying Newborn Baby by NaijaCover(op): 8:53pm On Sep 28, 2023 |
A Middle-aged man identified as Ifeanyi Ezenwankwo from Nanka community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State is currently in police custody for allegedly inflicting body injuries on his wife, Ekwutosi, and also burying a newborn baby in a shallow grave.
Ezenwankwo was said to have buried the newborn baby to conceal his illicit acts with a 16-year-old girl whom he impregnated and bore the child for him afterward.
The wife, Ekwutosi, a native of Agbiligba Nanka community, said she was inflicted with the injuries after she raised the alarm when she came back home and met her husband burying the newborn baby.
This was disclosed on Thursday in a press statement issued to journalists by Chidinmma Ikeanyionwu, the Media Aide to the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo.
Ikeanyionwu said the culprit was immediately arrested by security operatives and the wife was rescued after the ministry was alerted to the development.
The Statement Read, “One Ekwutosi Ezenwankwo, a woman from Agbiligba Nanka has been rescued from his alleged ritualist husband, Ifeanyi Ezenwankwo, for refusing to aid and abet his criminal activities.
“According to the woman, the husband who is also a native of Nanka is always in the habit of impregnating one 16-year-old girl and afterward, aborts the pregnancies, but he ran out of luck when the said 16-year-old became pregnant again and the pregnancy could not be aborted.
“The wife of the culprit said that trouble started when she came back home from where she went to and met her husband and the 16-year-old girl burying the newborn baby and when she raised the alarm, the husband brutally descended on her and wounded her together with her children.
“The woman noted that she had earlier observed what was going on between her husband and the young girl and had quickly warned that nothing should happen to the unborn child, a situation, she said made the husband hide the girl in his chambers.
“She also revealed that the husband also threatened to kill her, which according to her, has been a constant occurrence, citing instances where community members have rescued her from her husband anytime he embarks on the mission of silencing her.
“When she was asked what started the issue, Ekwutosi said that their problem started when the husband married another woman and ever since has not been contributing to the upkeep and welfare of the children.”
The statement added that the culprit has been arrested and is currently in police custody while investigations are ongoing. Source: https://punchng.com/anambra-man-arrested-for-beating-wife-burying-newborn-baby/
