Several items worth millions of naira were destroyed late Wednesday night, and in the early hours of Thursday, when fire in separate incidents, gutted Hotel Ibis Royale, Airport Road, 7&8 Bus Stop, Ajao Estate, Isolo, and Oja Oba Moruf Internatilnal Market at Ejigbo area of Lagos State.

No loss of life was recorded in the fire incidents. But it was gathered that the quick intervention of Isolo and Bolade Fire Crew of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service curtailed the fire which emanated from an open bar before it spread to the adjoining top floor of the two-storey building.

Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incidents.

According to Adeseye, “The fire was reported at 16:50 hours on Wednesday and two-storey building consisting of 46 rooms were prevented from substantial damage.”

She added that Oja Oba Moruf International Market at Ejigbo Road, Iyana Ejigbo, was reported to be on flames at 04:06 wee hours of Thursday.

“The Ejigbo Fire Station crew were quickly deployed to put out the fire which only affected five lock-up shops in a row of eight shops, destroying wares, estimated to worth millions of naira in the process.

“Both rescue operations have been successfully completed with no casualty recorded,” Adeseye confirmed.

Tragedy struck the Ugep community in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State as a family of six died in an auto crash along the Bekwara-Abochiche road.

The auto crash which occurred last weekend, claimed the lives of Mr. Edet Eteng, his wife, Ikow, and four of his children.

According to reports, the the four children were buried on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at Ugep, while the bodies of the man and wife have been deposited at one of the hospital mortuaries in Ogoja LGA.

It was gathered that Eteng and the family lived in Abuja, and were at his village (Ugep) to celebrate the Leboku festival.

The victims were on their way to Abuja when they met their untimely death after their car was said to have collided with an oncoming vehicle.

The accident, according to a witness, occurred after the vehicle carrying the family derailed from its lane and collided face-to-face with the oncoming vehicle.

Other family members have been thrown into shock as late Eteng, just lost his aged mother a few days after celebrating her birthday.

The Feral Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Cross River, SC Istifanus Ibrahim, who confirmed the incident said the tragedy involving two vehicles also left two other occupants injured.

He said the incident happened around the Otokpuru axis in Bekwarra Local Government Area of the state, adding that the victims were taken to Abuochichie Cottage Hospital.

“The information we gathered from security agents and a good Samaritan who were involved in the rescue operation because our post is a bit far from the scene of the accident, was that the probable cause of the fatal accident was over speeding,” he said.

“The accident claimed the lives of 6 persons, including one adult male (father) identified as Edet Eteng, one adult female (mother), and four children (three females and one male) all from one family,”

Road users, especially drivers, must as a matter of responsibility minimize speed during this rainy season because a lot can happen that may be beyond their control," he added.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three yet-to-be-identified suspects as a drunken hunter allegedly shot dead a 14-year-old girl.

A resident, James Joel, who spoke with PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, said the incident happened on Tuesday night.

Details leading to the unfortunate incident were still sketchy as of press time, but our correspondent learnt that the yet-to-be-identified girl was shot dead by the hunter who was on a bike in the Ayinla Akera area of Orile Agege, Lagos.

A video of the scene obtained by PUNCH Metro showed the girl in a pool of blood as residents wailed.

Some voices in the background alleged that the act was carried out by the policemen from the Elere Police Station in the area.

“Policemen from Elere; they have killed somebody,” a voice was heard saying in the video.

“If this turns to war, they will run,” another person said.

“She was sent on an errand and she was killed,” a voice in the video added.

But the Divisional Police Officer of Elere Station, Amodu Jimoh, when contacted on Wednesday, dismissed the report linking policemen to the incident.

But confirming the incident, the DPO said, “On Tuesday night, our men were patrolling. The policemen saw some people crowded on the street there. They tried to find out what was happening. They were told somebody shot at a small girl.

“They saw the corpse on the ground. It was a 14-year-old girl. They asked for the person that shot her. They were told it was a hunter carrying a Dane gun. He was drunk. There is a woman selling alcoholic drink beside the place.

“Maybe he was about to remove something and the gun fired. He came with a bike and it was likely an accidental discharge.”

The DPO said the corpse was taken to a nearby hospital, adding that the police traced the woman who runs the shop where the man went to drink.
