Latest Update, Coming From EFCC In ENUGU

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned a lawyer, Benjamin Nwobodo before Justice F. O. Giwa-Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court sitting in Enugu State.

He was brought before the judge on five charges bordering on forgery and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N12,000,000. 00.

A statement on Monday by the EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said the defendant pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.

Count three of the charge reads: “That you, Benjamin Chukwuemeka Nwobodo on the 15th day of January 2014 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N9,000,000.00 from one Wilson Ikeani Igwe under the false pretence of the sale of three plots of land situated at Emene, Enugu State to him, a pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act”.

Count four of the charge read, “That you, Benjamin Chukwuemeka Nwobodo on the 15th day of December 2014 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N3,000,000.00 from one Wilson Ikeani Igwe under the false pretence of the sale of one plot of land situated at Emene, Enugu State to him, a pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act”.

Oyewale said in view of his plea, counsel to the EFCC, Chief Superintendent of the EFCC, CSE Chikezie Raymond Edozie, prayed the court for a trial date and for the defendant to be remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Facility.

However, the defendant, who announced legal representation for himself, made an oral application for bail, which the court granted on the following terms; Two sureties in the like sum of 25 million Naira. One of the sureties must have a landed property in the Enugu metropolis.

The other surety must be a blood relation and must submit three years of tax clearance to the court.

Both sureties must depose and submit an affidavit of means and the EFCC is to verify the sureties and their addresses within seven working days of receipt of the sureties details.

The defendant, in addition, shall submit to the Deputy Court Registrar his international passport.

The court thereafter permitted the defendant to go home based on self-recognizance but gave him 10 days to perfect the bail conditions or the EFCC shall arrest him and take him to a Correctional Facility.

The matter was adjourned to May 13 and 14, 2025, for trial.

What Is Really Happening Inside Our Anambra

Four persons have been arrested by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command for burning a 74-Year-Old woman to death.

The incident occurred on Saturday in Abagana, Dunukofia Local Government Area. Her attackers reportedly procured a coffin and interred her immediately after the act.

A Source claimed that the woman, who used a wheelchair, was suspected to have been burnt for ritual purposes by one Ifeanyi Igwe, who remains at large. However, five persons connected to the incident, including Igwe’s 21-Year-Old girlfriend, Chinenye Ekwenugo, were arrested.

The Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, clarified the situation in a press release, stating that three of the four arrested persons were linked to the procurement of the coffin and burial of the victim.

His statement read: “The Anambra State Police operatives serving at Abagana Divisional Police Headquarters today, 26/1/2024, at 9 am arrested four suspects, including a 21-Year-Old Lady, Chinenye Ekwenugo, from Ifitedunu.

“They were arrested over the burning of a 74-Year-Old woman in a wheelchair in Abagana.

“During interrogation, the suspect Chinenye confessed that her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Igwe, who is currently at large, and three others set the victim ablaze and procured a casket to bury her before the intervention of the security operatives.

“Efforts have been initiated to apprehend the main suspect, Ifeanyi Igwe, who is still on the run. The body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy and further investigation into the cause of death.”

Ikenga provided the names of the other three suspects as Uzochukwu Okeke, 47, Fidel Anayo, 60, and Ikenna Anene, 54, all of them male and from Abagana.

Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Obono Itam, while reacting to the incident, called for calm and ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive investigation.
