http://www.punchng.com/news/northern-crisis-jonathan-to-ignore-reps-summons/

I like clever people like you madam.

Btw, have you ever heard or seen any summons without a date?
Nigeria is currently at war and these times call for unusual actions. The President should not fight the summons because fighting it does not help the security situation on ground. The President must be brave and comply.

Out of respect and cordiality, the summon had an open date to enable the President to honour it at a convenient time.

bayooooooo: Will Senator Ndume be part of the closed door session? What if he insists on being part of the meeting but the president disagrees? What if the president says several Honourables and senators like Ndume are still in NASS and that their patriotism is in question?

Ultimately if the president declines the invitation what trouble awaits him? Impeachment, Loss of goodwill? lipsrsealed
The whatif scenarios playing out in your head are far from realities. This kind of closed door hearing will probably be attended by members of the senate committee on Security and Intelligence, the Speaker, and a few other members. Ndume will not have any role whatsoever and will not and should not be in attendance.

porka: No, I am not claiming to be smart.

I am only learning from you and you are proving to be a difficult teacher.

There would not have been any need for all this if you ponder with me that the consequence of issuing the summons is graver than what it intended to address.

1) Jonathan will not obey the summons. He won't because no president has been issued such summons. He won't because obeying will put future presidents at jeopardy, setting a precedence for any useless summons. He won't because his attendance will jeopardize security and intelligence efforts, even when they say it's a close-door session, anything he says there will find it way to the social media and the MSM the next minute.

2) Tambuwal's house might try to compel him through impeachment threats, since a Nigerian president cannot be arrested.

3) Impeachment threats will aggravate the security challenges that Tambuwal is "trying" to address, because Niger Delta militants will read ulterior motives into it.

4) If he refuses and there was no consequence(s), Tambuwal's House of Representatives would simply look funny in the eye of the public.

Those were my points ab initio but it seems you wanted us to go round and round.
I'd suggest that you look at the parties in this case, in terms institutions rather than individuals or personalities. Its not a GEJ vs Tambuwal issue but an issue of Executive versus Legislative authorities. One risks ultimately turning the issue into a tribal one with the kind of personaliation you unintentionally displayed in your post above.

bayooooooo: They don't have any choice than to accord the president deserved respect. What exactly is "hearings" in this case? Public or Private? It does not make sense to call public hearing on national security issue. Besides the president can not discuss such an issue when a sitting senator is implicated and answering charges on terrorisms? If such meeting ever take place, it can't be frank and sincere as it is inherently adversarial in nature.
Regarding the bolded above, the hearing/briefing/meeting will be in closed doors. You don't want to discuss these kinds of security issues in a public hearing. GEJ should use this as an opportunity to build new bridges between the exec and legislative branch towards resolving these security issues. If GEJ and other officials do not honour NASS' request, then they are asking for unnecessary trouble.
Politics › Re: Azazi, Along With Jonathan Must Testify In NASS by nduchucks(op): 9:00pm On Jun 23, 2012
bayooooooo: NASS can't order any governor to appear before it. Governors are answerable to various Houses of Assembly in their respective states not NASS. So NASS has no such powers.

However, they can ask the president or a cabinet minister, etc to appear and clarify some issues. But when such matter borders on National Security and taking into cognizance our peculiar environment where some honorable members are sympathetic to the cause of Boko Haram, where a senator is facing prosecution for his links with the Islamic sect, such an appearance is a pointless waste of time. Nothing useful can come out of it.
Are you calling for the intentional subversion of the constitution by the President? It is people like you who will complain when impeachment proceedings are instituted against the President. At that time you will not remember encouraging him to act lawlessly.

I don't believe the President needs to initiate any new drama here. Its time for the executive and legislative wings to work together on a solution. The hearings should not be adversarial in nature and the President must be accorded all due respect.
Politics › Azazi, Along With Jonathan Must Testify In NASS by nduchucks(op): 6:01pm On Jun 23, 2012
Just last week, National Assembly worried by the spate of killings and bomb attacks in the country especially in the North, invited President Goodluck Jonathan to a closed door session. Also summoned by the lawmakers are the security chiefs including Azazi. One week later, Azari and the defense minister were sacked, an act which releases them from testifying since they no longer hold their positions.

A new invitation must be issued to Azazi and the fired defence minister. Azazi should now be free to testify honestly by what he meant by "elements within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) helped create the environment that created the Islamic sect, Boko Haram"

Azazi must tell the us what he meant by following statement he made while speaking at the Second South-South Economic Summit in Asaba :

“The issue of violence did not increase in Nigeria until when there was a declaration by the current President that he was going to contest. PDP got it wrong from the beginning. The party started by saying Mr. A can rule, and Mr. B cannot rule, according to PDP convention, rules and regulations and not according to the Constitution. That created the climate for what is happening. Is it possible that somebody was thinking that only Mr. A could win, and if he did not win, he could cause a problem in the society?”

I hope the firing of Azazi is not another ruse by GEJ to put the wool over our eyes. Immunize Azazi and let him speak! cool

Obiagu1: I will like to agree with that but to use the stability of his presidency as an excuse is silly.
But must Azazi tell the whole world about the conversation? Azaai should have been arrested for leaking classified information through his media spokesman. He was the national security adviser for goodness' sake, how could GEJ have nominated such a person to such a sensitive post? It must be either because Azazi is from the SS or GEJ is not up to the job.

Politics › Re: GEJ Rejected My Advice To Quiz Buhari - Azazi : Elombah by nduchucks: 4:08pm On Jun 23, 2012
It is safe to say that Nigerian politicians who have links to extremists, al-quaeda, and other terrorists organizations are well known to the government of the USA, which is a friend of our own government. One would hope that GEJ and his security team have cooperative and intelligence sharing relationships with the USA.

This means that GEJ would have been briefed that Gen. Buhari is clean and does not need to be invited for any bumb interrogation. Why would Gen. Buhari and Nelson Mandela be the only private African individuals invited by the White House to Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony if Buhari has any ties to terrorist organizations including Boko Haram?

Both Azazi and GEJ are the most incompetent government officials we've ever had. 2015 cannot arrive soon enough.

bakila: If indeed that statement is in anyway from Azazi, then Nigerians are in soup. The office of NSA is very strategic to National Cohesion that GEJ employed Azazi in that place at all shows that the man has an idontcare attitude to very serious matters.
I wouldn't make that up. That was Azazi's reaction to his sacking, via his media spokesman. Here's the source.

The time has come to negotiate a cease fire, but the strategy must include carrots and sticks, if you know hwat I mean.

koruji: So now BH would be ready to negotiate a ceasefire? I wonder why?

What has changed so much to move a bunch of blood-hounds who blew up more than 3 christian churces just last weekend and declared even deadlier bombings ahead to the negotiating table?

More fundamental, what are the items to negotiate with BH?

Wondering minds want to know!!!
You conveniently ignored the word "hopefully" in my post for suspicious reasons, but I'll answer your questions anyway.

Any right thinking Nigerian knows that Azazi's incompetence and failure were of epic proportions. It is better to negotiate a cease fire with the violent wing of BH to stop the killing of innocent Nigerians than to fight BH militarily. It is quite obvious that the military occupation of some states has not been effective in stopping the killings. Even the actions of JTF have resulted in indiscriminate killing of innocent Nigerians. Frankly, the JTF is guilty of some of the same crimes perpetrated by BH. They rap.e, maim, and kill innocent Nigerians under the cover of fighting BH.

What the heck is the use of the military occupation when BH continues to carry out attacks with impunity? It did not make sense to station troops in the SS and fight MEND militarily, and it does not make sense today, to fight BH militarily. We negotiated our way out of MEND violence and its time to do the same with BH.

Lessons learnt here should include not installing our tribesman to important positions without considering qualifications and competence. If I were GEJ, I will order the immediate arrest of Azazi for "leaking" sensitive information that have essentially compromised the very security he was in charge of. The below statement form Azazi after being sacked says it all, it appears GEJ himself need to be sacked SMH:

Media spokesman to Azazi Mike Awe

The government appointed him and has asked him to go. The President is under political pressure and not everything is classified and made public. When NSA asked that Buhari be invited for questioning, Jonathan kicked against it. When he suggested that some people be brought in and questioned, he kicked against it saying it is a ploy to scatter his government. So, really, it’s all about the president’s softness (weakness) but he appointed him and he has removed him.

Hmmm.

excerp

The new NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (RTD) is a one-time ADC to former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babanginda.

Col Dasuki is a Prince of the Sokoto Caliphate. He was retired from the Nigerian Army during the era of the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

The announcement was made shortly after the President summoned an emergency security council meeting with all the security chiefs upon his arrival from Brazil.

Prior to the president’s departure for the Rio+20 Summit in Brazil, Kaduna and Yobe States witnessed series of suicide bombings and violence between security operatives and members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

The radical sect which seeks to establish an Islamic caliphate in states across northern Nigeria, has been raging violent insurgency in the region, claiming hundreds of lives and destroying government properties, schools, military formations and Churches.

The Special Adviser to the president on Media and publicity, Dr Reuben Abati announced the dismissals and appointment on social media network, Twitter, posting that the “NSA Azazi dropped, Col. Sambo Dasuki (RTD) new NSA. Minister of Defence also dropped. Further details later.”

The two sacked security chiefs were in the security council meeting, earlier in the day with the president.

Dr Reuben Abati in an interview with Channels Television, stated that the president summoned the national security council meeting to evaluate the security situation of the country after his arrival.

He added that “the decision (dismissal of the NSA and Minister of Defence) that was announced is a follow-up to the meeting this afternoon.”

When asked whether the dismissal was as a result of the inability of the security chiefs to handle the state of security in northern Nigeria, Dr Abati, dodged the question, saying that “I will not tell you that the decision Mr President has taken was a judgement on the performance of the two gentlemen that are involved.”

“What I can tell you is that the decision that has been taken, is part of an attempt, in the series of attempts by the president to ensure that Nigeria people are further re-assured and that also, every step is being taken and where there are lapses, efforts can be made that those lapses should be corrected and possible efforts will be made to reassure Nigerians, that the administration is on top of the situation and President Jonathan is determined to ensure the safety, the security of lives and properties.”

The president is expected to send the name of yet to be announced Minister of Defence to the National Assembly for appropriate screening.

It is however unclear whether the Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada is affected by the shake-up of the security chiefs.

I'm happy that Nigeria conducted the best organized presidential election in our history and I congratulate Jega for his heroic acts.

My disappointment is that PDP decided to rig blatantly causing the electorate in the North to be enraged. PDP officials should have known that the elections were for the taking when the CPC/ACN merger talks collapsed.

Violence is not the way to address the rigging issues, lets go to court and show some civility, despite the fact that we all know what the outcome of the lawsuits will be. The methods used for the riggings must be exposed so that we can take preventive measures in 4 years.

We must give the President our full support because the future of our children and grand children is at stake. We hope the cluenessness exhibited by GEJ in the past 12 months or so were simply due to inexperience.

As for you, Onlytruth, you have your Igbo presidency, so lets not hear about this issue until at least 2024. dalu o.
Let me guess, Farouk turned the money in with his letter, but the money disappeared in transit. Jokers cheesy

The Chairman House of Representatives Committee on drugs, narcotics and financial crimes, Adams Jagaba on Tuesday denied being in possession of the $620, 000 bribe money offered the former Chairman, House ad-hoc committee that probed the management of subsidy fund, Farouk Lawan.

The suspended Chairman of the Subsidy probe committee, Farouk Lawan

Mr Lawan, in his statement, claimed he formally wrote Mr Jagaba, informing him of moves by oil tycoon, Femi Otedola, to bribe the subsidy probe panel and attached the sum of $620,000 which Mr Otedola paid.

in a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, titled “Re: investigation activities: request for handing over of exhibits in connection with the case of criminal conspiracy and taking gratification to prevent the course of justice”, Mr Jagaba wrote,

“I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that there was never a time I was in possession of the sum of $620,000 USD or any other exhibits (in my personal capacity or official capacity as chairman house committee on drugs, narcotics and financial crimes) relating to the subject matter of the above investigation.

“I hope this explanation lays to rest once and for all the claims that I or my committee is in possession of the sum of $620,000 USD purportedly given as bribe to the ad hoc committee on monitoring of fuel subsidy regime.”

On Monday, Mr Lawan had reportedly pleaded with the investigators handling the bribery allegations against him to allow him attend the plenary session of the House of Representatives on Wednesday so that he can retrieve the money from Mr Jagaba.

With this letter the Chairman of committee on drugs, narcotics and financial crimes sent to the Speaker of the House, it is unclear how Mr Lawan will retrieve the bribe money from him. cheesy

In the same vein, cases have also been thrown out where there are truckloads hard evidence, with the cash deposited at the CBN no less (ref. James Ibori); even having the cash does not provide much further assurance of a successful conviction.

As long as those in power are willing to subvert the judicial process, it is easily achieved regardless of the evidence.
na wa for wayas. The difference between the bolded above and the current situation is that, the evidence was marked. (We don't know what kind of markings). How could they have allowed anyone to walk away with almost $1million without putting in place, measures that would make the recovery of such funds prompt and immediate.

Since the SSS had the video tape record, the marked currency, and Farouk himself on location, why was Farouk not arrested and charged immediately -i. e. as soon as he collected the money? Why in the world did the SSS allow Farouk to disappear with almost $1million. Now, Farouk's goat has eaten the money. cheesy
