Err. . . .Nope

Lateef Jakande was his only democratically elected predecessor. Before that, Lagos had a Minister for Federal Capital Territory.

I think
Isn't that an indication that the selection of the gov's in this democratic dispensation follows a religious pattern?

Orisirisi for nairaland again.

Male virgins indeed at 25! Lmao!

How is a male virgin identified
By their fruits we shall know them. Just touch his crotch and squeeze it real hard, the veins will come to the surface but if the veins refuse to show, that is an indication of an overused man.

Is it an abomination to set a high standard for men? If men can walk around with their third leg knocking off any kitten that lies carelessly only to turn around and demand for virgins whenever they want to marry, why should I marry a used man? I don't want Tokunbo abeg!
Politics › Re: Lagos Politics And Religion by Needlelady(op): 10:41pm On Apr 13, 2008
Yes you are wrong.

'All' elected governors do not practice a certain religion. . .the immediate past and current governors are m-uslim, but before them, the previous governor was Sir Michael Otedola who was a Christian. Lagos is sufficiently urbane to choose leaders based on performance rather than on religion alone, with things still working smoothly. I do feel there is a greater level of participation by m-uslims that other faiths (not confirmed though) which may lead to such a slant.

Secondly, looking at the past 3 guvs in Ogun state, they have all been Christian. . .would you say all the guvs there have to be practicing a certain religion as well?
Thank you Debosky for clarifying the issue. I once heard from a friend that you need to be from Eko and practice a particular religion as a prerequisite for election into the Lagos guber office. One more question tho, besides Otedola, were other christian govs elected?

I've read so many ridiculous and sometimes degrading comments on women and their sexuality here and decided to unoffensively ask this harmless question: How will you determine a male virgin? Where can I find them? Because I think I'm too cute and hot to lie around with a non virgin male. If you are male and at the same time a virgin and up to 25 years old, holla @Funmilayo.

By Doyin 13,
But society often sends some of its members on practical suicide missions in the name of preserving the nation.

Why is there no such despondency over the sanctity of human life in such situations?

We are prepared to countenance the death of young soldiers hoodwinked by an emotive nationalism , but cry foul
when society tries to uphold the idea of the sanctity of life by extracting the ultimate punishment for those who commit the ultimate sacrilege.
Most civilized society will not force you into matrydom in the name of patrotism(I think the US only tried drafting once during the vietnam war). Those involved in wars went into the army on their own accord(Nigeria included) and it's totally different from being forced to the electric chair against your own will. Besides, I do not believe in wars to accrue my patriotic indulgence, that does not mean that everybody thinks that way.

Anti war sentiments are apparent in the whole world now and as matter of fact, I believe that wars will become obsolete by the year 2040(Africa included) and nations will retain their military for figurative purposes. Once again, capital punishment is a total violation of human rights and should be banned in its entirety especially in societies like Nigeria that has no wherewithal to forestall wrong convictions. I'm not tripping that some states in America still maintain the death sentence afterall abortion is legal in those states. What's the difference?

By Kobojunk,
Sitting murders forever and having the victims pay millions over their own lives to pay for the welfare of those who murdered their own is what I deem inhumane and unjust on so many levels and I completely see no reason for
For real? unfair? why not stop paying taxes since a bulk of your tax contribution goes towards the welfare of couch potatoes that looks at you like you are foolish whenever you go to work? Isn't that unfair? Isn't life itself unfair? Like I said before, It's better to let the whole murderers go scot free than convict one single man wrongly.
Politics › Re: Capital Punishment by Needlelady(op): 5:46pm On Apr 13, 2008
death sentences aren't irreversible, there is something called an appeal process. i support the death penalty for serial killers/rapists
He/she meant that it's irreversible after executing the criminal unless you know an appeal process that can raise somebody from dead if he/she was eventually found innocent?.

By Kobojunkie,
I stand for the right of the victims to demand and get justice and most of all for government to serve justice in all cases, be it in cases where capital punishment is required or not. Human rights includes respecting the rights of victims and the rights of the community above all things.
Does it ever occur to you that justice can be applied in so many ways without killing people? There've been proven cases of people wrongly executed  in the US over this issue and you are still running your mouth.  Tell me the major difference between the American states that have capital punishment and those that don't have capital punishment? I maintain that sitting murderers forever in jail will deter them more from commiting crime.

Imagine an advanced country like the US with sophisticated crime labs still making fatal mistakes on criminals, how much less Nigeria that has no crime lab? Did you remember how Omisore was accused for Ige's murder without any forensic evidence? If he was a poor man, God knows he'd been 6 ft under by now. What about the lagos state guber aspirant tthat was murdered some 2 yrs ago? The Nigerian police started their mistakes from the crime scene and cannot take a simple fingerprint appropriately. Is this the country that you'll wish to continue with capital punishment? Are you a cave man?

Politics › Re: Capital Punishment by Needlelady(op): 1:36am On Apr 13, 2008
Capital punishment should be abolished. . . . It stinks.
No individual or group of individuals have the right to take the life of any human.
A man commits murder? Let him rot in jail for the rest of his life.

The purpose of practising capital punishment in USA/Nigeria has been defeated because it doesn't serve as a deterrent to aspiring murderers!!!
Matter of fact, it seems countries that practice capital punishment produce more serial killers/drug dealers.
So much for the Human Rights Act that America always rant about!!!!

@ Kobojunkie,

You ask why lock em up? I ask why kill em?
Killing em aint going to bring the dead victims back, will it?
Tell them jackal. 5 stars.
Politics › Re: Capital Punishment by Needlelady(op): 1:35am On Apr 13, 2008
Why bother locking them up at all when you could potentially be locking up an innocent man?? Why not let them all rome free out of fear that we may purnish the innocent?? Come on!! I mean there have been cases where innocent men have spent decades of their lives in jail only to be freed later on. Spread the fear even further and let's just not lock anyone up. Heck no punishment just cause
You remain adamant in an issue that can make somebody useless over a simple mistake. I don't think you'll be singing the same song if  your relation or you falls into that loophole. It's easier for us to cast stones when we are in the clear. I have a friend who supported Bush even when he is farting in  her face but when she lost a relation in the Iraq war, her story and ideology changed.
Politics › Re: Capital Punishment by Needlelady(op): 1:30am On Apr 13, 2008
As someone who is 100% for capital punishment and someone who is not even anti-west, I don't believe Nigeria should try to do every thing as the west does it. It may not make sense to many in the west that capital punishment remain an option, I believe we have yet to see even close to 50% benefit from such a ban in the west and so there is no information to support that being the right choice or best way to go at all.
Do you know that capital punishment has serial consequences? Most armed robbers in Nigeria showcase their brutality because they know the severe consequences if caught and capital punishment is a way to take them out of their misery as quick as possible. Wouldn't it be better to punish someone by living him/her fiorever in jail than taking him/her out of the misery through quick death?
Politics › Re: Capital Punishment by Needlelady(op): 1:25am On Apr 13, 2008
By Seun,
Capital punishment should only be an option if all of the following apply:
- In cases of first degree murder.
- If there is overwhelming physical evidence supporting the conviction.
- If the victims (more than one) were tortured before they were killed.

Even in such cases, we should be careful because the death sentence is irreversible because: in countries like Nigeria, where the police is not equipped to properly investigate crime, it's very easy for an innocent person to be wrongly convicted. Better safe than sorry.
Your footnote is enough to reconsider this capital punishment thing because it's better to let a criminal go scotfree than punish an innocent person. Besides, deathrow inmates are kept for years in the US before execution to insure 90% accuracy(after several appeals) but  they are easily killed in Nigeria before dusk. If people are left for years in Nigerian deathrow before execution, Ken Saro Wiwa would've been alive today.
Politics › Re: Capital Punishment by Needlelady(op): 1:21am On Apr 13, 2008
Easy to say no to capital punishment if you are not at the receiving end of some wicked man killing your whole family (God forbid) or some kind of absurd atrocity with no sign of remorse on the killer's part, I would definitely want that killer dead before daybreak. So as for me it's yes to capital punishment for gruesome acts like the things above. As for drug peddling, rotting in jail is enough punishment for me.
Didn't Gandhi say that an eye for an eye will make the whole world go blind? It's only the US that still has capital punishment among the first worlds and their crime rate is obviously higher. I think armed robbers in Nigeria will be more subtle if the capital punishment is out of their way.

Do you think that Nigeria should emulate most western nations and ban death sentence? On the other hand, do you think the death sentence in place for some crimes solved any problem since armed robbers increase everyday?

If you support the death sentence, do you also support th govt to add other crimes like drug peddling under the capital punishment like Buhari did?

I don't think you knew how to cook before because it's a knowledge that will never leave you even if you quit doing it for 40 years, same goes for language. All those yorubas forming here that they can't speak yoruba because they've stayed in America for 5 years get on my nerves because it's a BLATANT lie. I don't know why people complain that people from other races and cultures laugh at us when we are ashamed of ourselves. I regret to say that that trait is common among ladies, guys rarely do that.

How we shared N10m - Iyabo Obasanjo; Senators got N.5m each; return tickets to Ghana, etc; Why we did not arrest her - EFCC; ICPC, EFCC at loggerheads over her arrest
Idowu Samuel, Abuja With Agency Report
Friday, April 11, 2008
CHAIRMAN of the Senate Committee on Health, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, has explained how the Senate Committee on Health expended the N10 million it got from the unspent N300 million 2007 budget of the Federal Ministry of Health.

In a statement written by the embattled Senator to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) about the investigation of the scandal, she said the money was used to sponsor a retreat and a seminar of the committee to facilitate the passage of the Health Policy Bill.

In the statement dated March 12, obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, Obasanjo-Bello said the money was used specifically for the retreat.

“We started to expend the money for the retreat from January to pay estacode, hotel rooms and airline tickets were bought for 11 senators and two officials of the committee,’’ she said.

“Their hotel rooms were paid for and a consultant in Ghana was hired to arrange our meetings with the Ghanaian Ministry of Health and Ghanaian National Assembly,’’ she added.

She added that N500,000 was given to each member of the committee who attended the retreat while their airlines tickets from Lagos to Ghana were also purchased.

“The committee had the retreat with 10 members attending for four days at the La Palm Royal Hotel in Ghana,’’ she said. “Monies were also expended on internal (local) transportation to Lagos for all senators. All monies have been fully expended,’’ she added.

The retreat which, she said, was held between March 16 and March 21, was not attended by Senators Chimaroke Nnamani and George Akume. “Senators Nnamani and Akume, because they have not indicated that they are going, have not been given any estacode and their tickets have not been bought,’’ she said.

On how the money came about, Senator Obasanjo-Bello said: “Sometime in late December 2007, I got a call from the Minister of Health, Adenike Grange, in Abuja that the money from the ministry to sponsor the retreat and seminar was ready.

“I told her that we are going to the retreat in February or March, 2008 and that they should just pay for our expenses and for logistics there,’’ she added.

N300m scam: I'm ready for trial —Iyabo Obasanjo

Written by Ise-Oluwa Ige, Emmanuel Aziken & Chris Ochayi
Thursday, April 10, 2008
DAUGHTER of the immediate past President, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, declared yesterday that she was ready to face trial over the alleged N10 million given to the Senate Committee on Health by the Federal Ministry of Health, and debunked speculations that she was on the run.

advertisement

Indeed, she attended yesterday’s plenary session of the Senate, although the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it was looking for her.

Also, yesterday, the Senate cleared her and other members of her committee of impropriety in respect of the utilisation of the N10 million from the unspent N300 million 2007 budget of the Health Ministry.

Iyabo speaking through her counsel, Chief Joe-Gyari Gadzama (SAN), said she was not only available for trial but also ready for prosecution if there was any charge against her.

She said she was embarrassed by yestersday’s reports in the print and electronic media to the effect that she was evading arrest and prosecution

According to her, up till yesterday when she mandated her counsel to write the EFCC, she was never summoned or informed of any pending charge against her.

Iyabo writes EFCC

The letter written by Chief Gadzama to the Chairman of EFCC over plan to declare her wanted reads in part: “We are Solicitors to Senator (Dr.) Mrs. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, who is hereinafter referred to as ‘Our Client’ and this letter is written on her firm instructions and authority.

“Our Client in the most modest manner wishes to express her great surprise and utter shock at the various publications of both the print and electronic media in the last two days to the effect that she had been arraigned in absentia before a Federal Capital Territory High Court presided over by Hon. Justice Salisu Garba on a 2-count charge along with the former Minister of Health, Prof. Adenike Grange and others.

“Specific reference must be made here of the various print media where such information was published: The Leadership of April 09, 2008 in its front page captioned: “EFCC Arraigns Ex-Health Ministers, 9 others.

Declares Iyabo Obasanjo wanted”; Daily Trust of Wednesday, April 09, 2008 in its front page captioned: “Iyabo Obasanjo charged with former Ministers,” and went ahead to publish further, “Iyabo was not in Court and the EFCC told the Court she was at large”; The Nation of Wednesday, April 09, 2008 captioned its front page headline thus: “Iyabo Obasanjo on the run, EFCC tells Court”; This Day of the same Wednesday, April 09, 2008 in its front page headline captioned the news in the following manner: “EFCC arraigns Ex-Ministers on 56- Court charges. Says Iyabo’s at large.

“Our Client wants it to be on record that at no time was she summoned or invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for the purpose of arraignment in Court and neither did she decline any such summon or invitation.
