By Christopher Isiguzo in Enugu Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and Fulani herdsmen operating in parts of the state, under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, South East zone yesterday initiated moves aimed at ending the lingering violent clashes between the herdsmen and members of their host communities in the state. Specifically, the herdsmen and the state government after a closed door meeting at the Government House, Enugu agreed to set up a joint standing committee so as to entrench a lasting peace and harmony between the host communities and the herdsmen and also to curb criminalities suspected to be perpetrated by the herdsmen. It could be recalled that a disagreement between the herdsmen and people of Ugwuneshi community in Awgu council of the state had led to the arrest and incarceration of 76 members of the community at the Federal Prisons, Umuahia, Abia State recently. It took the timely intervention of Governor Ugwuanyi and his Abia State counterpart, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu to get them released after two weeks in prison. The latest decision which is expected to resolve areas of disagreement was a major outcome of a crucial meeting between the herdsmen and Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi at the Government House, Enugu convened by the governor who had been seeking ways to arrest the growing insecurity generated by frictions between the herdsmen and members of their host communities. Governor Ugwuanyi who played host to the herdsmen that came in their numbers explained the reason for convening the meeting was to forge a better relationship with the cattle breeders and curb on-going frictions between them and their hosts, especially in view of the recent clash between Fulanis and the people of a community in Awgu council area of the state. The governor told them that “This meeting has been summoned essentially for purposes of entrenching peace in Enugu State. It will, however, dwell on recent happenings in the State which are not only posing a significant threat to peace and the security of lives and properties of our people but are also threatening to spiral out of control. “We are all witnesses to the rising wave of undesirable incidents and criminal activities in the state particularly kidnapping, armed robbery and clashes between Fulani cattle rearers and farmers in some rural communities in Enugu State. “We are aware that such incidents are currently promoting a sense of insecurity and restiveness among our people and if not promptly and effectively checked, could lead to a breakdown of law and order as well as avoidable but potentially lethal clashes between groups or communities in the state. “As no responsible Government will allow this to happen more so, when it is clear that no one profits from such a situation and no meaningful progress can be attained under such an atmosphere, it has become imperative that we came together under this kind of forum to exchange frank views and ideas as to how we can jointly reverse the current trend and consequently, preserve the peace and security for which Enugu State has long been reputed”, he told the visitors. The chairman of the group of cattle breeders, Alhaji Gidado Sidikki, addressed the gathering enumerating incidents that had constituted sources of estranged relations between them and their hosts and appealed to the governor to do all within the ambit of his powers to reverse the situation. During the meeting, he interpreted the governor’s address to those who did not understand English language clearly and both parties agreed to set up a joint standing committee made of members from the breeders and the people of the state to forge a common front that would breed harmony. They agreed to go home and to later forward the list of those who would be in the joint committee from their side while the government would also produce a list from its own side. source:www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/04/09/ugwuanyi-fulani-herdsmen-sign-pact-to-end-violence/

As the trial of Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki continued at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), on Wednesday, some Senators are insisting that the trial is politically motivated. Speaking on the matter, the Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, told press men that he was at the CCT because he was equally in court for politically-motivated reasons. “This is not just about Saraki,” Ndume said, adding “I have been at the court since 9am. They are pushing my case too to make sure they only have people that they can control in the National Assembly leadership.” Also, Senator Ibrahim Gobir, representing Sokoto East, told reporters outside the tribunal sitting that Saraki was the only option for Senate President. “Our first option is Saraki,” Gobir said, adding “our second option is Saraki, and our third option is Saraki.” Gobir, a second term Senator, and the Chairman of the Senate Services Committee, remarked that because the Senate was on recess and that many legislators had traveled, the number of Senators present at the court had gone down to between 25 and 30. “However, if it is a question of those who support Bukola Saraki,” Gobir said, “You will see about 83 to 85 Senators here.” Meanwhile, Senator Isa Misau, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, said “The executive branch seems to have abandoned their duty, which is governance, and are instead focusing on persecuting the Senate President. This seems to be why there is fuel scarcity, and nothing seems to be working in the country.” The trial of the Senate President has been adjourned till Monday, April 18th. source:dailypost.ng/2016/04/06/cct-trial-we-are-firmly-behind-saraki-ndume-other-senators/

The General Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare has called for a revolution in Nigeria, saying that’s the only way to address the fundamental error of government. Bakare who said this during the 27th anniversary thanksgiving of his church on Sunday pointed out that the revolution should be a radical transformation of values which should transcend politics and change of government. He also berated the current government over its stance of waiting for an upsurge in the price of crude oil before reviving the economy. Bakare said, “While appreciating the positive developments in our democratic experience, especially the attempts by past and current governments to eliminate systemic leakages, I shall seek to prove that, by a fair preponderance of the credible evidence, the state of the nation calls for a revolution.” “This is a revolution that transcends politics or policies; a revolution that means far more than any change of government; a revolution that means a radical reformation of values as they impact upon the social, economic and political landscapes of our nation.” “It is a symptom of chronic national laziness to blame the global economic downturn for Nigeria’s economic woes, or to wait expectantly for a rise in crude oil prices in order to sustain our consumptive economic patterns. Our problems are not the result of global economic cycles; our problems are the results of counter-productive national paradigms and self-limiting frameworks of state.” source: http://dailypost.ng/2016/04/04/there-is-need-for-urgent-revolution-in-nigeria-pastor-tunde-bakare/

The South-East All Progressives Congress (APC) at the weekend bashed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the worrisome fuel shortage in the country, insisting that the former ruling party has no moral standing to complain. Addressing an interactive town hall meeting with members of APC at Egede, Udi local government area of Enugu State on Sunday, the Spokesman of the South East Caucus of the party, Mr Osita Okechukwu, said Nigerians were paying for the sins committed by PDP led federal government, which in sixteen years failed to neither fix the existing refineries nor build new ones. “We are paying unfortunately for the sins of PDP; I remember vividly in 2010, when Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, then Finance Minister and Coordinator of the Economy, announced to the whole world, the award of $23 billion Greenfield Refineries, to a Chinese company. “The refineries were to be located at Bayelsa, Lagos and Kogi State. There was jubilation nationwide. If they had completed the refineries, today, we won’t be talking of scarcity or astronomical increase in fuel pump price. They squandered the money and put Nigerians in the harms way”, he declared. Okechukwu assured that APC will fix the rot in the petroleum sector, but made it clear that one year was not enough to fix a refinery or build a new one. He, however, observed that the Hon. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu had assured Nigerians that government will fix the existing refineries and enter into partnership with private sector to erect new refineries. When reminded that Nigerians were getting tired of excuses for the crushing fuel crisis, Okechukwu said “We can’t stop pointing out the unconscionable wreckage the PDP unleashed on our economy, in the last sixteen years. The wreckage keeps on popping up at each junction, despite the efforts being made to suppress it. “For instance how can one fail to point out why Enugu Coal remained moribund, when the fact on the ground shows that in 2012 – N923 million, 2013 – N1.7billion and 2014 – N1.1 billion were budgeted for 3D Seismic Study Survey for Enugu and Gombe Coal and were ignobly squandered? “How can’t we stop reminding ourselves of the sordid past, more so, when the crude oil price which used to cushion and cover the PDP gross corruption track has since the inception of Buhari’s regime nosedived? A barrel of crude oil hovered between $90-100 in most of the period under review; now it hovers between $30-40. PDP sins bleed in every facet of our lives – dilapidated roads, poor power supply, collapsed social infrastructure and state of uncertainty. “Our elders admonished us that before we find solutions to the rain beating us, we must first remember where, when and how the rain started. “For us, yesterday is not gone. President Buhari’s score card is that he has triumphed in taming corruption and containing insecurity. Revamping the economy is next in line with the 2016 budget,” Okechukwu said. Confronted with the selective nature of the war against corruption and the secrecy over recovered looted funds, Okechukwu retorted: “Can the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) probe Mr Osita Okechukwu for looting Enugu State fund, when I was neither the governor nor a contractor in Enugu State? They are probing Chief Sullivan Chime and cohorts because they presided over the commonwealth of Enugu State. “The secrecy of the recovered fund is strategic, for a seasoned rabbit hunter cannot shout or beat his chest, after discovering one or two holes. He has to be reticent if he wants to capture the rabbits, because sometimes rabbit underground habitation has some times more than seven exit holes. Methinks the rabbit-hunter-model is what President Buhari adopted.” On the way forward, Okechukwu implored all Nigerians to as a matter of urgent national importance join in monitoring the 2016 budget implementation. He urged Nigerians to go through the budget, when it is passed and identify their areas of interest and monitor it. Okechukwu called on Nigerians not to shy away as usual, as President Muhammadu Buhari cannot spend any money not budgeted for as prescribed in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He noted that Mr. President had raked in N3 trillion via the Treasury Single Account, and therefore, enjoined Nigerians to monitor how the ministers, heads of departments and agencies execute it. In attendance were, Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku, Deputy Governorship candidate of APC, Philip Eze, senatorial candidate of the party, local government and Ward chairmen. source:dailypost.ng/2016/04/03/fuel-scarcity-pdp-has-no-moral-ground-to-attack-buhari-south-east-apc/ |
The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said after a careful study of the facts on ground, it has come out with a conclusion that what took place on March 19 was not the expected rerun State and National Assembly elections but mere allocation of votes to the ruling party in the State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).www.dailypost.ng/2016/04/03/rivers-apc-insists-on-fresh-polls-says-wike-intimidated-inec-officials/ |
Officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) on Saturday stated that the crippling fuel scarcity in the northern part of the country will be over in the next two weeks following the completion of repairs on the vandalized pipelines supplying crude oil to Kaduna Refining and Petro-chemical Company (KRPC). The officials also said the KRPC is ready to commence production. The Group Executive Director (GED) and Chief Operating Officer (COO), Off-Stream sector, NNPC, Alhaji Bello Rabiu Barbuda, gave the assurance when he embarked on a facility tour of the KRPC Plant. He disclosed that the Warri and Port Harcourt refineries were also set for adequate fuel supply in the country, saying the era of shortage of the petroleum product supply will soon be over. ”As you can see, the whole country is under siege because of fuel supply. We are looking at the entire value chain to solve the problem. “I come here to see the readiness of this refinery to be back on stream. We were actually having problem with the supply of crude oil to this place from Warri. It is about 640 kilometres line. That line is almost ready so that we would start pushing the crude here. “At least in ten days, we would bring the crude to Kaduna, and about two or four days we would make everything ready. “We want to make sure that in the next two weeks this refinery will be ready to start producing fuel. If that is done, the entire (northern) part of this country will be serviced with fuel.” Babura told journalists in an interview shortly after touring the KRPC plant. He noted that the plant is in good condition, adding that production will begin and nothing will stop it again. “They will be ready to receive the crude soon and if the crude comes, we believe that everything will run smoothly”. source: www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/04/02/kaduna-refinery-to-end-petrol-scarcity-in-north-in-2-weeks/ |
Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin The President, Women Arise for Change Initiative, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, has called on politicians in the country to stop using women as entertainers at campaign rallies, saying this has debased their qualities of involvement in governance. She made the remark at a two-day workshop for Community Women and Women Political Aspirants for Osun, Ekiti and Ondo States, held in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti , State capital. According to her, in most societies, women constitute 50 percent of the population, forming a critical mass in societal mobilization and direction. She condemned a situation especially in Africa, where women are denied access to government decision-making and political processes. She said: “It is observed that Nigerian women over the years have not fully involved themselves in the political space despite constitutional provisions that give them rights to political participation”. source:www.nigerianewspaper.com.ng/2016/04/stop-using-women-as-entertainers-at.html?m=1

Criticisms have continued to trail the outburst of Governor Ayodele Fayose on the abducted Chibok schoolgirls, Punch is reporting. Fayose had said the abduction was not true, but a political instrument to vote out former President, Goodluck Jonathan. It would be recalled that the Boko Haram group had shown the video of the over 200 girls in captivity, leading to a global outrage. Also in a recent interview, a former British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock, said US and UK intelligence surveillance located the missing girls at the Sambisa Forest but could not do anything as the consequences could be grievous. But Fayose, on Wednesday, added a twist to the abduction saga when he said that the abduction was a political strategy employed by some people. He spoke in Ado Ekiti while declaring open a two-day workshop on capacity building among female political aspirants from Ekiti, Osun and Ondo states. The administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan had lived in denial up till three weeks after the news of the abduction broke, saying no schoolgirl was kidnapped in Chibok. But reacting, the senator representing Osun-West senatorial district, Isiaka Adeleke, said Fayose should put himself in the shoes of the schoolgirls’ parents, adding that even former President Jonathan later admitted that the schoolgirls were kidnapped. Adeleke, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress, said, “Fayose should not trivialise this touchy issue. The governor should use his time wisely and pray for the safe return of these girls.” The senator representing Osun-East senatorial district, Babajide Omoworare, called on the country’s security agencies to invite Fayose to tell Nigerians where the kidnapped schoolchildren are. In a reaction on Thursday, Omoworare said he called for the interrogation of Fayose because the governor appeared to have classified information on the whereabouts of the girls. He said, “Security agents must invite Fayose for us to know where the schoolgirls are. He is probably having classified information. However, if he is playing politics as usual, it is cruel to mock the girls’ parents and Nigerians who are daily in agony and hoping that someday, the girls would come back alive. “The Buhari administration will do all it can to bring back the girls and end the mockery from people like Fayose.” Also, a former member of the House of Representatives, Bamidele Faparusi, described Fayose’s claim as a threat to national security. Faparusi, a chieftain of the APC in Ekiti State, maintained that Fayose by the statement had insulted the sensibilities of the families of the missing girls. He called on the security agencies to invite the governor for questioning to shed more light on his claims. Faparusi said, “Governor Fayose has given the whole country the lead that these girls were neither missing nor dead. All we need to do is to ask him to tell the whole country where they are being kept and nothing more. “The world-renowned activist, Malala, came to Nigeria to visit Dr Goodluck Jonathan and begged that these children must be recovered. Even after the abduction, some of these girls escaped and were later reunited with their families when Jonathan was still in the saddle. “Could it be inferred here that the former President who is also a member of Fayose’s party, had lied against his own administration?” A former Executive Secretary, Ayedire Local Government Council of Osun State, Gbenga Ogunkanmi, said that Nigerians should not accord Fayose attention. In a statement by his media aide, Ismail Usman, on Thursday, Ogunkanmi said Fayose had lost the sense of dignity and integrity. He said, “It is shocking that a person occupying the exalted position of governor could open his mouth and gush out these insensible utterances. It shows how debased our political system is. It shows that something is wrong with how our political leaders emerge.” Also, the Lagos State chapter of the APC slammed Fayose for describing the abduction of the missing schoolgirls as a political gimmick to pull down the Jonathan administration. Speaking in an interview with the Punch on Thursday, the state Publicity Secretary of the APC, Joe Igbokwe, said Fayose had subjected himself to public ridicule with his comments. He said, “It pains me to no end that we are still providing a chance for world-class joker, Fayose, to continue to insult our intelligence. Fayose is an indictment on all of us, especially the educated people of Ekiti State. “Fayose is a punishment to the people of Nigeria and Ekiti State. The people deserve the kind of government they get. Again, the relocation of Ekiti lawmakers to Oyo State is not unconnected with the house of fraud called Ekiti Government House. Nothing good can come out of Ekiti as long as Fayose is there. Out of nothing comes nothing. You cannot give what you do not have.” source:dailypost.ng/2016/04/01/fayose-should-be-arrested-and-questioned-about-chibok-girls-whereabouts-igbokwe-others/ |

The controversial daughter of Victor Omololu Olunloyo – a former governor of Oyo State, Kemi Olunloyo, has come up with reasons he called the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E. O Adeboye a murderer. The media personality, in a recent interview with Pulse Television, had accused Adeboye of murder; She said, “Pastor Adeboye killed a cop in 1971. I’m saying this in front of a camera. I have always posted it on Facebook and Twitter but I am saying it on camera now. “He thought he was shooting an armed robber in his house but it was actually a cop that broke in and he got killed. “That’s why I call him a murderer; If you murder somebody, you will continue to be a murderer; he is a murderer,” the 51-year-old activist stated. However, when asked why she was making the ‘weird claim’, Kemi said, “Pastor Adeboye said if you are single mother, you have no worth. “He said it in one of his speeches in his church and that’s the real reasons I went after him. “I have people on Facebook telling me: ‘how come you have children?’ “You don’t have to be married to have children,” she quipped. source:dailypost.ng/2016/04/01/why-i-called-pastor-adeboye-a-murderer-kemi-olunloyo/ |
