Following the violence that marred last week re-run election in Rivers State, President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged by three groups under the aegis of Arewa Youth Alliance, AYA, Concerned Human Rights, CHR, and Vote for Service Initiative, VSI, not to declare a state of emergency in the state. In a statement signed by AYA’s Presidents, Comrade Abubakar Kudu; VSI’s President, Mr Adeola Samuel-Ilori; and CHR’s Coordinator, Comrade Declan Ihiekiare, they appealed to the President not to succumb to those calling for a state of emergence in Rivers. The groups observed that during the election, regions in Rivers State were highly militarized with several illegal arms in the possession of several unemployed youths, who constitute about 60 per cent of the population. “We, however, call for caution and circumspection in this regard, as this issue is not as simple as that. We urge Mr. President not succumb to such self-service calls for the declaration of a state of emergency in that state. Doing so will be an open invitation for the return of militancy. And the President as the father of the nation should not be partisan on this issue,” they said. Noting that security situation in the state will not improve if a state of emergency was declared, the groups stressed that the only thing that would change was the dismantling of the political structures “Politically, it would be suicidal for the present government to embark on such a move while the nation is still battling with the Boko Haram insurgency. “We don’t know how the government would justify such a move while over 500 Agatu people in Benue State have been massacred without any state of emergency being declared.” source:dailypost.ng/2016/03/26/dont-declare-state-of-emergency-in-rivers-arewa-youths-beg-buhari/ |
The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that it would conduct fresh elections in areas where voting was disrupted in the violence-marred Rivers States polls of March 19. However, the electoral body said in a statement Friday that it would never return for the fresh polls until there is an assurance of security and safety. INEC said it would not endanger the lives of its personnel, journalists and observers andothers involved in the exercise.“ INEC will, at a date to be decided, conduct fresh elections starting with accreditation and voting in all Local Government Areas, Constituencies, Registration Areas and Polling Units where the exercise was disrupted before voting was concluded on Saturday 19th March, 2016,” the statement signed by INEC’s Director of Voters’ Education and Publicity, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, said. Even so, the commission said this would only be after due consultation with parties involved, and subject to the advice of the security agencies and guarantees by the political parties, candidates and their supporters.' While the Commission is committed to conducting free, fair and credible elections, it hereby reiterates its resolve not to return to Rivers State (or anywhere else where there was a breakdown of law and order in the cause of conducting elections) until there is a conducive atmosphere for the conduct of credible elections. As a responsible organization, it will not expose its stakeholders especially voters, its officials, observers, media personnel to any danger and even where dates have been fixed and published, it will not hesitate to again suspend the exercise where there is a clear danger or credible threat of a breakdown of law and order,” INEC said. The All Progressives Congress had called for total cancellation of elections in Rivers State. But INEC said it would uphold results already declared. “The Commission restates its earlier decision to uphold the declarations and returns made in the Federal and State Constituencies where the exercise had been concluded. .“Similarly, the Commission will conclude and make returns in constituencies where it is satisfied that voting and collation were done in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act and our Guidelines,” INEC said. Although INEC said it acknowledged “that there were some challenges in its operational efficiency, especially as it concerns the production and customization of the result sheets used for the conduct of the election”, yet, it insisted no fake result sheet was used, dismissing allegations by PDP and APC. “The Commission wishes to emphatically state that there were no fake result sheets or any fake materials used in the conduct of the elections,” it said. INEC condemned the violence that characterised the elections. “The Commission condemns in no uncertain terms all those who have been spewing hate speeches and making incendiary statements, which no doubt exacerbated an already tense with at I on.“It will like to again commiserate with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the family, friends and colleagues of Samuel Dumebi Okonta, the Corps member who unfortunately lost his life in this patriotic service as a poll official. May his soul rest in peace.” source:http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/200824-no-rivers-rerun-without-guaranteed-security-inec-vows.html

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has assured that journalists practicing in the country have nothing to fear from the Nigerian government in the performance of their duties. According to him, “Under this dispensation, we have never even contemplated stifling the freedom of the media not to talk of hounding them to death,” the Minister said in Doha on Sunday when he featured as a panelist at the ongoing 2016 Annual Congress of the International Press Institute IPI in the Qatari capital.”Not a single journalist is in detention in Nigeria today. The government of the day is not a threat to the media, and it is not about to stifle press freedom or deny anyone his or her constitutionally guaranteed rights. ”A statement issued in Doha, Qatar by the Special Assistant to the Minister, Segun Adeyemi, on Monday quoted him as declaring this at the session devoted to a debate on the implementation of the document on the”International Declaration On The Protection of Journalists”’, which was presented at the Congress. Mohammed said having identified lack of communication and mutual suspicion as part of the reasons for regular frictions between the government and the media in Nigeria, he had taken measures to enhance communication and also reduce suspicion between the two.” These (measures) include strengthening the rapport between the government and the media, which I have done by meeting with the major stakeholders in the media industry, and setting up a committee between the media and the security/intelligence agencies to deepen communication and understanding,” he said. The Minister also said while the government has ensured the protection of the premises of vulnerable media establishments when required to do so, that does not affect the independence of such organisaions. Commenting on the role of governments which regularly targets journalists for their work, he said ”the state which ought to protect life should not be the one to snuff it out.” Mohammed stressed the need for capacity building for media practitioners as a way of enhancing the performance of their duties, saying the local chapters of the IPI and other media organizations have a role to play in this regard. source:http://dailypost.ng/2016/03/21/journalists-have-nothing-to-fear-under-buhari-lai-mohammed/

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists(NAWOJ) has expressed with displeasure the recent rejection of the Gender Equality Bill by the Senate. It would be recalled that senators who rejectedthe bill cited constitutional and religious violations. Ifeyinwa Omowole, NAWOJ National President, said it is further disheartening that this is the third time that the National Assembly would be rejecting similar bills seeking equity for women. ”In view of the many advantages of this bill, It is the position of NAWOJ that the relevant sections of the constitution be amended to allow for the bill to be passed,” she said in a statement at the weekend. ”If the constitution could be amended to accommodate political issues, then the 8th National Assembly can amend the constitution to accommodate women who are their mothers, their sisters and their daughters. NAWOJ hailed the sponsor of the Bill, Sen. Biodun Olujimi for being a worthy representative of the women in Nigeria. It also commended all other women and the few men who supported the bill,.NAWOJ particularly thanked the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, for his “visible support” of the bill, urging him to use his good office to lobby his colleagues on its importance. The group called on all women groups to be actively involved in sensitizing Nigerians especially lawmakers. In conclusion, the statement noted: ”The Gender Equality Bill is not a battle of the sexes;it is not a bill that removes the submissiveness of women to their husbands neither is it a bill that seeks to erode the responsibility of the woman in her home. “It only seeks to give the woman more opportunity to assist herself and the man in the home. It is a bill that benefits the man even more than the woman.” source:http://dailypost.ng/2016/03/20/gender-equality-bill-your-mothers-sisters-daughters-will-benefit-nawoj-tells-opposing-senators/ |

A group known as the Nigerian Christian Elders Forum, NCEF, on Friday berated the Federal Government over the country’s recent inclusion in the Saudi Arabia-led coalition against terrorism. Condemning government’s decision, NCEF Chairman, Solomon Asemota while speaking with reporters in Abuja said the action clearly negated the rights of Nigerians as well a disregard for the views of non-Muslim Nigerians who took part in bringing the new administration to power. Asemota said, “Including Nigeria in the Saudi Arabia Military coalition of Muslims/Arab nationswould appear that the foreign policy thrust of the current administration is to make Nigeria a satellite state of Saudi Arabia,”“Any nation in which Islamists believe that they are sufficiently strong to exercise influence rarely experiences peace. Mr. President should kindly remember that over 50 per cent non-Muslims of Nigeria did not vote for the nation to become Sharia compliant,” the group said. President Muhammadu Buhari had recently announced the decision to join the Saudi Arabia based group so as to fight terrorism. The group maintained that Nigeria’s inclusion in the Organisation of Islamic Conference, OIC, in 1975, as well as its recent inclusion in the Saudi-led coalition was an attempt by Muslim leaders to dominate the country, with the teachings of Islam. “While Islam is a religion; Islamism, otherwise called political Islam, is a set of ideologies that hold that Islam is not a religion, but a political system meant to dominate the environment in which it is practised,” Asemota said.Pointing out that some of the policies of the present government was a major cause of concern to Nigerians,Asemota said, “N900 billionwas released as bailout to states without appropriation. International commitments are being made without recourse to the National Assembly. ”Asemota further condemned what he described as, “Attempt to fund deficit in the 2016 budget through issuance of Sukkuk loan which is a Sharia compliant loan.” source:http://dailypost.ng/2016/03/19/nigerias-inclusion-in-islamic-coalition-an-attempt-to-islamise-the-country-christian-elders-forum/ |

WARRI – CHIEF Ayiri Emami, chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has said his benefactor and former Delta state governor, Chief James Ibori who is serving a jail term in the United Kingdom, would return home to Nigeria, not later than July. Chief Emami, a confidant of Chief Ibori, Friday, in Warri said he plans to embark on a campaign to mobilise stakeholders and resources to bring lasting solution to the menace of vandalisation of oil facilities which he said was causing huge damage to the nation’s economy. He said, “There have been speculations as to when Ibori would return, but I can confidently tell you that by June or at most July, he would return home to Nigeria and we all need him, especially in Delta to sanitise things again. “If he were here, a lot of things would not have happened. Ibori was one of those who predicted that Goodluck Jonathan and the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, would not win the 2015 Presidential election. It was fear of the unknown that made his brother, former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan to remain in PDP. I listened to Ibori, I had to leave On content of his campaign to end pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta, Ayiri said, “Far from applying force to shut out the vandals. The whole idea is to ensure that the oil and gas being taken from the region make meaning in the lives of the host communities. We’ll not achieve this if the vandalisation continues. “The gas Nigeria produces supplies electricity to several parts of the country, but the communities from where it is being extracted don’t have electricity. The crude oil from the land is refined into fuel but there are no fuel distribution outlets to serve riverine communities so they perpetually buy from the black market. “People are shouting now about fuel scarcity because of recent irregularity in importation, but year in year out, coastal communities in Niger Delta never get fuel at the normal pump price. My campaign to be unfolded soon is to ensure the adequate of infrastructure and opportunities in the oil producing area so that vandalism will stop”, Ayiri added. source:http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/03/ibori-returns-home-july-ayiri/ |
Pls emulate Jonathan our current Hero of Democracy and not Buhari the destroyer of democracy in 2011 |
The Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, IPCR, Professor Oshita Oshita has advised politicians in Rivers State to emulate the political spirit exhibited by President Muhammadu Buhari and his predecessor Dr. Goodluck Jonathan before, during and after the 2015 general elections. He noted that both leaders bequeathed an excellent model for Nigerians on democratic contest by demonstrating that the lives of Nigerians are sacred and should not be violated on the altar of elections. The D-G, in a statement signed by his Media Assistant, Abu Michael categorically condemned the unnecessary tension building up in Rivers State as preparations continued for the rerun elections on Saturday. He said the acrimony being promoted by the actions and utterances of politicians and other key personalities in Rivers state was counter productive and not in the interest of the ordinary citizens and residents of the state and Nigeria as a whole. Oshita stated that democracy was designed for conflict prevention and not to generate tension and violence, adding that elections should not betaken as a matter of life and death. He stressed that Buhari had demonstrated the commitment to earn the confidence of every Nigerian in correcting the ills in the polity and called on the electorate in Rivers State to come out en masse to vote candidates of their choice in the election. source:http://dailypost.ng/2016/03/18/rivers-rerun-ipcr-dg-urges-politicians-to-emulate-buhari-jonathan/ |
