Remii:
^^^^ people living in Lekki area are not alien what happens overseas, what they are asking is some equity and fairness,  these people are major income tax contributors to Lagos state, with 20% total emoluments taxation, some of these people pay more much as N5 - 8m per year, anyone who makes above N5m pays N1m to LASG, that in an area without any state public amenities apart from road. no public water etc.

Tolling should be reasonable, not three within 20 km and there should be alternative routes, so that people take toll roads by choice. that is what is obtainable in the so called "Overseas".
didn't know that. . .no wonder the thing dey pain them, if i dey shell out a cool million in taxes e go hard me o. . .

tolls arent only meant for the wealthy.
your point was that nigerians would pay the toll if they went abroad isn't it? i'm not against the toll in any form, my point is that the way the LASG went about it leaves A WHOLE LOT to be desired, why would you start collecting a toll when there's still K-leg about the alternative route? that's my major beef with this whole issue.
PoliticsRe: Fashola Suspends Lekki Expressway Toll Collection by netotse(m): 8:25pm On Jan 01, 2011

desire not to pay tolls? huh

but they will gladly pay mandatory and multiple tolls if they travel abroad.
that's not a viable point, it's not only the wealthy that will be affected by the toll.

i think suspending the toll road is a bad idea.

the complainers are the same ones who five, ten years from now will start comparing nigeria with malaysia and indonesia, and whining about our lack of infrastructure.

short sighted people.
@tpia
did you read the parts of the people's arguments where they stated that the alternative route wasn't viable?(heck the govt even states it as one of the reasons for suspending the toll)

i like the idea of tolling and knowing the plans govt has for lekki(LFTZ) it's obvious govt is thinking far ahead.

@thread
like Jacobs123 said, why did the govt have to take away an existing road from it's citizens? why didn't they build a new road from scratch?

I am also returning to Nigeria in January, I got a job for N100K + accommodation , crazy, lol. My prospective employer said he cannot afford to pay what am worth.  I think for me it’s more about searching for fulfillment, I want a sense of contribution. I have made some money in my life but still I felt something was missing, I tried studying more still no show,
I think life is more fulfilling when you make life better for the next person which is difficult here in the UK, even the Oyinbo beggar thinks his country is doing me a favor because he thinks my country men in Africa (generalising here) live on trees. I know money is very important in Nigeria because it determines your security, comfort, access to justice etc.
I was motivated to return after noticing that most of my classmate even those from worse economies as compared to Nigeria left the UK immediately after our studies (just concluded an MSc). I am a renewable energy engineer and I hope I can contribute a bit but this bomb thing dey scare me  oooooo……well every man must die one day. I just hope I am making the right choice.

Beaf:
Ok, lets get pedantic. grin
Lack of gas cuts out some plants which puts weight on others, leading to overloading, leading to their short down and system collapse. . .
Happy Xmas by the way. wink
the lack of gas is the excuse, the reason for the shutdown is the overload, gas shortage is NNPCs wahala, the loading of the units(generators) is PHCNs wahala. It's just that it's easier for them to say 'lack of gas' and the illiterate reporter will chop hook, line and sinker.

something that doesn't help matters when it comes to overloading is that We dont have a functioning governor control system at most of our power stations.

Although one thing to always remember is that you dont give electricity supply to people per se, as in, you cant say i have 100MW, i'll give you 95, it's left to the person drawing the power to limit himself to 95, if he doesn't all you can do is cut him off(that has it's own risks and can also result in a system collapse to), you cant limit him to 95MW.

oh . . .merry xmas to you too.

PoliticsRe: Phcn System Collapse Plunges Country Into Darkness by netotse(m): 11:41pm On Dec 29, 2010
Beaf:
There are serious issues with our gas supply infrastructure. For instance, the SE (for reasons best known to past govts) is completely cut off from the rest of the country gas wise, whereas Eastern Nigeria is very important in gas production. Port Harcourt is in the East, same as our highest oil producing state, Akwa ibom, same as Bayelsa and Rivers.
The problem is so gross, that there could be abundant gas coming from Delta state, but absolutely none in the East and vice-versa. How we could have ended up with such an arrangement is beyond me. It ranks right up there with how we signed all of our gas supplies to foreign countries up till 2015. Way above that though, is that it is a serious security problem for the country, if an enemy were to attack, then the isolation of the East would make it easy to knock out 100% of Nigeria's power supply, a very dire situation indeed.

So far there has been a lot of frantic behind the scenes work to normalise our gas infrastructure and bring it up to date (hence the record amount of power supplied last week), because govt seems serious about power supply, but it will take time to get some things right, there might be further hiccups. of course, being Nigeria, there might also be some mago mago dealings. But we will get there.

NNPC has to answer quite serious questions about how gas supply they had guaranteed could drop so low as have a chain effect that knocked out plants across the nation.
i see someone has been reading the power sector roadmap. . .lol

@thread
it takes a couple of days(sometimes even weeks) to recover from a system collapse, so no one should expect things to get better immediately

and a system collapse isn't caused by lack of gas, it's caused by the generators being overloaded(in extremely simple english)

2mill a month isn't a big deal to some companies, however, it has to be based on the individual in questions skill set, you have to really have something to offer, fact is, 4 out of 5 returnees only have their much vaunted integrity and not much more.

you mentioned cisco in one of your posts, do you have a CCIE? that'd be a good start.

that said, that's more than what i earn in a year. . .lol

Maybe i'd have a better understanding of your point if you could explain the steps that government should/could take to bring about the idea you're trying to pass across. I'm saying this cos it seems we're going back and forth over the same issue, and maybe if we take a look at it from another angle things'll make more sense.

I'm off the opinion that by leaving majority of the power sector investments to private companies(in a sense), the government is doing the right thing. I think the money saved could be put to better uses, what's your take?

I don't think you read my post.
I not saying that this large scale industries will operate without power. They will use their own power stations just like our profitable oil and telecoms companies.
telecoms is not an industry. . .buying thousands of generators does not translate to a power station

the difference in the cost per kwh makes your suggestion less feasible, i dont know which industry would want to generate their own power at double the cost. . .

Chei! i never knew Beaf was this dumb o. BEAF U ARE SOOOOOO DUMB!!

A man says he can provide reasonable power supply within the first quarter of the new tenure, the time in question is just three months. if providing Reasonable power could be handled within three months, then y hasn't he done it since the past six months? Ok lets say he was busy getting his head out of his arse, now that he knows what to do, why not plan to do it within January to march next year? Idiotic ragamuffin talkin trash like his predecessors

I get your point Blacksta better person, leave the mumu beaf brain make him dey dull himself there
I'll agree with you on something. . .GEJ's statement was pretty stupid, I'm guessing someone told him to toot his horn a bit, but that's where it ends.
about a thousand megawatts of the NIPP stations are scheduled to come online in the first quarter of next year, that's where the 'reasonable' comes from. . .

anyone that has read the roadmap would know that GEJ is simply restating what's in there, given the nature of the power supply industry, he cant promise you constant electricity, but the roadmap sets a goal of better quality, higher reliability and predictability of supply.

@maro23
your argument would make more sense if the govt was planning to spend it's money on the power sector, it isn't!

the point of the reforms are to channel money(OPP) into the sector. Furthermore, since the quantum of money needed(even with OPP) would be large, govt is getting help from the world bank interms of partial-risk guarantees. I seriously think the world bank wouldn't agree to back us if we were to put the cart before the horse.

It's not right to say that industry should come first and use telecoms as an example, different industries have different characteristics when it comes to electricity consumption. Telecoms isn't intensive(typically, one of the most load intensive equipment in a base station is the airconditioning)

and for oil and gas sector, they build their own power stations.

OPP: other peoples money.

blacksta:
beaten you handsdown - you and GEJ think alike -

is first quarters not Jan  till March.

Ode oshi
@Blacksta
GEJ said 'first quarter of his administration if elected': the 'of his administration' qualifies the word quarter, meaning he was referring to the first three months after his election not the first three months of the year. . .

I'm of the opinion that if you weren't so taken up with expressing your dislike for GEJ you wouldn't have made such an obvious mistake.

@Beaf
you're gradually morphing into NLs very own FFK(Femi Fani-Kayode). . .normally you should've have picked up Blacksta's faux pas but you also were too caught up in the moment(or is it mood?) to notice.

@maro23
why are you using the cost of solar generation to estimate costs of generation? it's common knowledge that solar is much more expensive(in terms of capital) than fossil.
