Hey pple,

So far I'm doing ok, no withdrawal symptoms, still have a windows partition but haven't had to use it ever since I installed my office 2007 with wine,

I need help with an issue, I'm unable to tether my phone to my computer via usb(I use an N900), with bluetooth it works like a charm but with usb it never connects. . .

can anyone shed more light? I've tried searching on the internet for a solution but maybe I'm not using the right terms. . .

I'm using 11.04

Thk you so much for the advice you gave.but the thing is even with your 2.1 the competition is still high.most companies ask for 4-5 years experience,I wonder where a fresh is meant to get it if no one employs then.
you're being a bit melodramatic, most graduate trainee positions require 0-2 years experience, any position that asks for 4-5 isn't for recent graduates

white elephant. . .first, where is the surplus electricity they're talking about? abi I'm the one misunderstanding the grammar

I dont have nearly enough experience at the level that govt takes such decisions but somehow I have a feeling that the people behind this deal are people that dont understand the power sector.

No be by mouth dem dey build power plant. . .make them sort out the regulations first.

@OP
I agree with your list o, nowadays I tend to stay away from this board, it seems as if it's not possible for people to respect other peoples' points-of-view

for me, I think beaf has abandoned Nigeria as a whole. I remember one thread that beaf and biina where discussing the power sector, then I was tripped (he still used insults generously then though), then I could say he was about making Nigeria better but now, it's GEJ or bust for him.

and then of course, his and oyb's love for each other is legendary, the insults that have flown between them two. . .*shuddering*

Christianity EtcRe: Psalm 109: Why Is It In The Bible? by netotse(m): 12:30am On Oct 20, 2011
@TOH
do you have any idea what proverbs 26:2 says? some people can curse all day and it wont mean a thing, but on the other hand. . .

for me, that psalm was David being real, he felt the emotions and expressed it, some of us feel worse emotions(and even act on them sef) It's not until you've cursed the living daylights out of someone that you've done something wrong/vile you know. . .that said, I dont subscribe to that school of thoughts o, I prefer to leave the cursing to others, people can bring down curses on themselves without anyone having to utter a word (Zech 5:3-4)

P.S. The bible isn't all about love and mushy stuff, while God does love us to bits, He is still a God that is too holy to behold iniquity, He's still the God that destroyed sodom and gomorrah. He is still the God paul refers to in 2 thes 1:6.

God is referred to as a consuming fire isn't He?

ok in light of the above, I dey go ask Him for forgiveness for all the bad things I don do today. . . tongue grin

Sure thing Netotse. Sorry I'vee been away for a couple of weeks.

My power experience has been mainly in the area of High Voltage D.C transmission. I first became swithched on to this technology as an undergrad in the mid-late eighties reading the IEEE Spectrum magazine. In particular, I learned about the Pacific Intertie, a High Voltage D.C Transmission line on the west coast of the U.S. I remember thinking, 'Wow. Is that even possible? How do you even generate such high D.C voltages to begin with?" Up till that point, I was steeped in the belief that once you generated your A.C voltages and then stepped them up using transformers, you were left with no choice but to transmit your power as A.C. This was how it was done in Nigeria at that time, and as you know, high voltage A.C transmission is still the way it's done in Nigeria till date. When I discovered that given the right conditions, it was not only possible but preferable to do otherwise, I was fascinated.

Even though the mid-eighties are not too far away in the rear-view mirror on an electrical enginering time-scale, HVDC technology was still relatively new and unproven technology at that time. Spectrum magazine highlighted some of the ongoing debate about the benefits/justifiability of this technology. There were lively dscussions not only amongst electricaal engineering experts but also within the general public. Those were interesting times with few people knowing what the future held for HVDC technology.

Fast forward 20-25 years and HVDC technology is more mature. The technology is better understood and engineers have gained knowledge and experience resulting from dozens of HVDC installations around the world. In Africa, to the best of my knowledge, there is only one HVDC transmission line in the entire continent. That line is the 1700km long transmission line between the generation site at Inga and Katanga (formerly Shaba) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. I worked on that project, and I finally got a chance to experience up-close, the technology that so intrigued me more than twenty years ago.
cool beans, we should be getting an EHV network in nigeria soon (700kV) according to the federal govt(aka bros Jona). Most of my experience has been in normal AC transmission but now I work in a predictive maintenance department in a cement company now I still plan to go back to the power sector sha. . .

So what sector are you in now?
CareerRe: Welcome To My Office by netotse(m): 10:05am On Oct 11, 2011
Hey pple,

I'd appreciate it if someone gave me some tips on how to deal with information overload, There are a number of technologies(vibration analysis, ultrasound, infrared thermography et al) we apply to make our job easier and so I have to learn about them, thing is there's always some new material I discover on the internet and this keeps increasing the amount of stuff I have to read, It's even difficult to pick one technology and study and It doesn't help that in my department we're a mix of mechanical and electrical engineers so sometimes the line between fields gets blurred and all of a sudden you realise that you're doing mechanical work.

I realise I need to focus on something and see it through esp as training for electrical ppl here isn't anywhere as comprehensive as what the mech guys have(it's a group wide thing, it's not just in naija) and I sorta get sidetracked can see how I can apply all of them when I eventually head back to power (yep. . .power is still the main thing for me)

as per work. . .

things have picked up at work so there's precious lil time to faf around these days.

I'm away from the plant for a week for a training course yay!!! (I don dey plan to extend am sef), sad thing about it is that I'm at the training school

which is only 10mins away from the main plant, but still I get to close at 5.00 er'day  grin

Sorry, the wickedness in the health sector has been a culture for decades. It has nothing to do with this govt, except you want to join oyb in cuckoo land.
While such wickedness is not to be encouraged, you don't expect cultures and deep rot that are decades old all over the country can be swept away with a wish, do you?

. . .It rained today, my shoes got wet. . . I blame GEJ! grin
that's true. . .but this is the NATIONAL hospital we're talking about, you dig? if it was just any hospital your excuse would hold, when kelis had an issue with UK immigration the mayor of london intervened(dude wrote a letter).

A govt hospital messed up and GEJ is the face of govt. If it was a teaching hospital or federal medical centre it would be different(then we can abuse the minister of health) but the friggin' NATIONAL HOSPITAL, do you have any idea what that means??
HealthRe: National Hospital Rejects Accident Victims In Abuja by netotse(m): 5:35pm On Oct 04, 2011
Beaf:
grin

The man looked for something to hang his sorrows on and decided to blame GEJ for something that happened in the hospital.
These days, if Tina with the round bottom gives her all to oyb and he fails to "rise to the occasion," he would blame GEJ. Dis World sef!
@beaf
If we had a government that values human life and is actively showing this, there's no way a national hospital will try something this absurd. The fact that the national hospital management or whoever took the decision could take such a silly decision can be traced to the fact that we have a government that is know to show by their actions(or lack thereof) that they dont value human life.

If our president can fail to step up to the mark when disaster strikes, that same lackadaisical attitude will cascade down.

could you not type in caps? it's considered rude on some message boards. If ibadan is a must you could find an electrician to tag along with, but if lagos is an option you could look back a couple of pages where I gave someone a website of company that holds training camps in lagos.

Electricity always increases during therainning season. That said, its never increased this much that i remember! I hope this power road map does work, cos i swear GEJ might have spent as much as OBj did in his entire 8 years on power this last yr alone.
I like the might you put in your statement, if not for that you for don gawk am. . .

how much did GEJ meet in the excess crude? he cant have spent up to a 5th of what OBJ spent(truth is when the NIPPs come on stream it'll be OBJ we should be thanking)

Power-wise GEJ is making the correct moves (he's too slow for me but they are being extremely thorough sha).

In other sectors the guy don fall my hand finish!

BTW, the improvement in electricity associated with the rainy season does not show up until the end of the rainy season, that's when the dam levels will be full.

what's the difference between diesel, LFO and LPFO? I've always wondered, someone here told me they're the same thing but somehow I get the feeling they aren't.

we use LPFO(Low Pour Fuel Oil)huh(not sure whether it's the same as LFO sef) and HFO(Heavy Fuel Oil) for our engines and I'm trying to read up on them.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Testimonies Of Graduates With 2.2 And Below And How They Made It. by netotse(m): 12:51pm On Aug 30, 2011
I also finished with a 2.2(I'm an electrical engineer as well). I'm a bit ladback(read lazy grin) and I cant cram, I'd rather express stuff in my own words, so I sorta switched off after my 2nd year in school. Coupled with the fact that it's all paper engineering we do in schools.

Ultimately, employers are more interested in what you can do for them, never forget that, your class of degree is just one of many factors they try to use to guage/filter applicants.

make sure you know your stuff, practically too, put it the hours, burn the candle at all the ends burnable and above all, strategize. A major problem with us nigerians is grin we aren't strategic in our thinking.

Identify the field you want to work in and start developing contacts in that area, most nigerians are helpful people (as long as you're not asking them for anything other than information. . .at first grin tongue). Get to know some people in the field you want to work, call them from time to time, ask for advice, validate their knowledge(you know how we engineers like to explain stuff to people, makes us feel important. . . cheesy grin).

lastly, make sure you do extremely well in any of the job tests you do, and work on your interview skills, so that even if it's a 2.1 and they call you by mistake. . .you get my drift?

I finished not too long ago (not up to 5 years ago) so I'm not as old as some of the people on this thread, I also work in a multinational

if you're still in school, u can like to start strategizing o, my I.T. and NYSC were in the field of engineering I identified as the one I want to work in so I have a head start when it comes to working experience in my field.

although that's where the agreement ends, If not for the fact that I stumbled on a pretty cool website, I'd like majority of the preceeding posters think that nothing is happening as regards the power sector in naija. . .

I think the current set of ppl at the helm of the power industry are not as verbose as we're used to and that's why majority of people think nothing is happening.
