Politics / Re: EFCC Boss, Magu, Wants Inclusion Of Anti-graft Studies In School Curricula by nextnear(m): 9:08am On Mar 22, 2019
mrakeli62:

In a bid to stem the tide of cyber crime among youths, especially undergraduates, acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has stressed the need to include anti-corruption studies in the curricula of institutions of higher learning in the country.

Magu, who fielded questions in Hausa during a special programme on Bond 92.9FM, in Lagos, said the commission has opened talks with the National University Commission (NUC) on the possibility of introducing anti-corruption courses in the curricula of higher institutions in the country.

“If we realise that corruption and economic and financial crimes can hinder a nation, then, it is not out of place to introduce this kind of course in our tertiary institutions, as an impetus to our drive to change the narrative on our campuses, as the undergraduates constitute the major actors in Internet crimes.

“By so doing, we would have literally opened the eyes of these students, who will, someday, hold positions of leadership in the affairs of the nation, to the inherent dangers in the vice. And in the end, they will turn out to be crusaders of anti-corruption war, with the nation being the overall beneficiary,” he said.

The anti-graft chief, who was represented by the commission’s Zonal Head in Lagos, Muhammed Rabo, assured that the commission is winning the war against the infamous Yahoo boys

“In fact, Internet fraudsters now know that it is no more business as usual. I can say this with all confidence.

“The clampdown is not only in Lagos; it is across the country, especially as we have now opened more offices,” he said.

He further said as part of efforts to discourage youths from engaging in the criminal practice, thecommission had been carrying out public advocacy and education against the commission of economic and financial crimes.

“We go into secondary schools to educate them about the consequences of crime, while also warning them to shun all forms of criminality, because it will always end in pains and sorrow,” he said.

Magu also described as untrue, the claim by some members of the public, that the commission had been selective in its operations.

He said the commission has always given equal attention to all petitions it received, adding that, “our doors are open to all Nigerians with genuine complaints that can be substantiated in law.

Politics / Re: Onnoghen Owns Only 5 Houses, Not 55 – Ex-CCB Director Testifies by nextnear(m): 2:01am On Mar 22, 2019
Omooba77:
A retired Director at the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, Mr Awal Yakassai, on Thursday, testified as for the second prosecution witness, PW-2, in the ongoing trial of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, who is facing trial over his alleged failure to declare his assets.

Yakassai told the Mr Danladi Umar led a three-man panel of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, that contrary to what was alleged in the media, he said the suspended CJN owned only five houses.

He said it was not true that CCB investigators linked the ownership of 55 houses to the defendant.

The witness made the disclosure after he was shown copies of Justice Onnoghen’s asset declaration forms, which the Federal Government tendered in evidence before the CCT.

The embattled CJN was said to have submitted the forms marked as Exhibit 2 and 3, to the CCB in 2014 and 2015.

Answering questions under cross-examination, the PW-2, told the tribunal that he served at the CCB for 29 years before he retired in April 2018.

He said the CCB was yet to verify Justice Onnoghen’s assets with a view to finding out if he made false declarations

Holding the two documents in his hand while responding to a question from Onnoghen’s lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, the witness said: “My lord, according to exhibit 2 and 3, the defendant has only five buildings and not 55”.

Awomolo noted that one of the five buildings was given to the defendant by the federal government itself.

Continuing his testimony, the witness, told the tribunal that verification columns on Onnoghen’s two asset declaration forms were still empty.

He said: “As indicated here, the column for verified assets have not been signed as at today” he added, saying it was standard practice at the CCB that returned asset declaration forms must pass through three stages of verification.

“My lord we have three stages of verification, the first is at the time of submission of forms, the second is what we called conference verification whereby we invite the person. And the third is physical verification of the assets.

“Until these three stages are completed, we cannot say that the assets have been verified”.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the CCB, Danladi Umar, had earlier threatened to give 28 years jail term to journalists that misrepresent proceedings on the CJN’s trial,

Umar, who said he was displeased about “the distortion and misrepresentation” of what transpired at the tribunal last Monday by a section of the media, warned that he would henceforth wield his powers against journalists.

“Henceforth, any journalist carrying concocted or discredited statement which is not adduced before this tribunal, I will not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law heavily on the person.

“The journalist will languish there and may remain there (in prison) until I retire about 28 years from now.

“The person will be summarily sent to prison because that is contempt.

“It does not matter whether the contempt is committed in facie curiae (before the court) or ex facie curiae (outside the court)”, he fumed.

The CCT boss has given FG’s lawyer, Mr Aliyu Umar, the nod to call a second witness to give evidence against the suspended CJN who is answering to a six-count charge.

Aside allegation that he failed to declare his assets as prescribed by the law, FG had in the charge marked CCT/ABJ/01/19, FG, alleged that Onnoghen operated five foreign bank accounts, contrary to section 15(2) of Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.

FG had insisted that it was the CCB that okayed Onnoghen’s trial based on certain infractions that were discovered in his asset declaration forms.

Politics / Re: The Next Census Will Cost Over N220 Billion - Population Commission Reveals by nextnear(m): 1:45am On Mar 22, 2019
Ayodele70:
The National Population Commission has said the next census will cost well over N220bn.

The Director-General of the NPC, Dr. Ghaji Ismail, said this in Abuja on Tuesday at the commencement of fieldwork for the continuation of the Enumeration Area Demarcation.

He said the 2015 budget for the proposed 2016 census which eventually did not take place was put at N220bn.

Ismail said with currency devaluation and inflation rates, the commission would require much more than N220bn to conduct a census.

The DG said,

“How much will it cost? At this point in time it is going to be very difficult because there have been changes. It is not something you can say off hand but if we deduce from our previous submission in 2015 hoping that it would take place in 2016, a lot has changed in terms of currency devaluation but if we are to use the 2015 submission, we are looking at a submission of over N220bn.”

Ismail said although the 2019 budget proposal had no provision for a census, a separate budget could be submitted for the exercise.

Politics / Re: Imo: PDP In A Hurry To Resume Looting – Okorocha by nextnear(m): 1:33am On Mar 22, 2019
ManirBK:
Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has accused his would-be successor, Emeka Ihedioha, and members of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of “being in a hurry to resume looting after eight years of being out of power.”

Okorocha, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, said instead of telling Imo people what they would do for them in terms of surpassing his achievements, the incoming administration is dissipating energy on inanities.

He said, “Members of the People’s Democratic Party in the State are obviously in a hurry to resume their usual looting of the treasury and properties of the State, reading their body languages and considering their utterances especially when they have stayed out of Power for eight years without reprieve.

“Since the party’s Candidate, Chief Emeka Ihedioha was fraudulently declared winner of the governorship election in the State following the askance role of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Francis Ezeonu, the party and its members have not made any policy statement on where they are taking-off from and where they are going from there.

“They are either talking about non-existent N17billion that has been withdrawn by the government or talking about the lands to revoke and the vehicles that have been auctioned or threatening fire and brimstone. And when they were Challenged to say where in Imo one can find N17b to withdraw and whether the money was withdrawn Cash or by transfer, they evaporated.

Okorocha said that Imo people never voted for the PDP and would not have voted for the party and its Candidate Chief Emeka Ihedioha, but the REC in Imo decided to return the Party to Power at all cost and by all means for his own selfish reasons, adding, “The only good thing about the PDP coming back to Power even if it is for three months is for Imo people to see clearly the large extent Okorocha has assiduously worked and transformed the State. Reason being that it is only when one marries two wives that he would be in a position to say which one is better.”

Politics / Re: Osinbajo Suspends Trader Moni Distribution After Elections by nextnear(m): 8:43am On Mar 21, 2019
NaijaMutant:

Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has halted his visits to markets nationwide to promote the Trader Moni scheme, The PUNCH has learnt.

Osinbajo, it was learnt, has not toured any state to promote Trader Moni in the last one month.

However, checks by The PUNCH showed that the programme was still on.

Trader Moni is an initiative of the Federal Government, through Bank of Industry and Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme.

The programme is part of the Federal Government social intervention aimed at funding micro business in the country through soft loans beginning from N10, 000.

The programme was launched in August while the Vice-President began his tour in Osun State on September 3, 2018, barely three weeks to the Osun State governorship election.

At the first tour, Osinbajo was accompanied to Iwo Market by the Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola; Dep. Governor of Osun State, Mrs Titilayo Laoye-Tomori; Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and other government officials.

The exercise was immediately branded as voter inducement because of its timing.

The Vice-President further took the tour to Lagos markets in company with the then All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, and other APC stalwarts.

He visited over 20 states thereafter during the countdown to the polls.

Osinbajo on some occasions combined his tour of markets with door-to-door campaigns where he met with people and asked them to vote for the APC.

Members of the opposition, as well as Transparency International, described the exercise as voter inducement.

The chairman of the anti-corruption organisation, Awwal Rafsanjani, noted that the initiative was an “official use of public funds in the name of TraderMoni to actually induce voters.”

He added, “It was not done three years ago. It was only started close to election time. So, the allegation by many Nigerians that this is clearly a case of vote buying using public funds are not true.
