Also I studied economics and going in for HRM(human resources management). Does it look like a change of line? Are they very much related? Jst wondering cos of the VO's
Looks strange to me too, never heard of such before.
regarding your second question, I think you should be able to answer that question yourself.Comme on, you have Bachelor in economics so you should know better.you start by researching about HRM and try to see if it related to economics or not.

Tech industry groups are cautiously optimistic and tech workers are wary of the immigration reform bill introduced in the U.S. Senate this week, which was released by its sponsoring “Gang of Eight” early Wednesday in all its 844-page glory.

On Tuesday, Neil Ruiz, associate fellow and senior policy analyst at the Brookings Institution, told us prospects for the bill’s passage looked promising, though at that point he had seen only a 19-page summary of the legislation.

Among the wide-ranging bill’s provisions:

Raising the cap on the number of H-1B visas from 65,000 to 110,000 annually, with as many as 180,000 to be granted each year in the future.
Raising the number of additional visas specifically for STEM advanced-degree holders from U.S. schools to 25,000 from the current 20,000.
Requiring employers to pay higher wages for H-1B workers than under current law. (As now, they could not pay visa-holders more than the prevailing wage paid to native-born workers.)
Requiring “H-1B dependent employers” — those who employ a disproportionate number of guest workers — to pay significantly higher wages and fees than normal users of the program. At present, the dependent-employer threshold stands at 15 percent of total headcount. This was one of the requirements that Facebook took aim against in its lobbying.
Employers with 30 and 50 percent of their workforce made up of H-1B or L visa holders who do not have green-card petitions pending would pay an additional $5,000 fee per head. That fee would grow to $10,000 for employers with H-1Bs comprising 50 percent or more of its workforce.
Companies would be required to advertise H-1B positions on a Labor Department website for 30 days before filling the position with an H-1B applicant.
Increasing the allotment of green cards.
Creating a “startup visa” for foreign entrepreneurs.
Moving toward a points-based merit system in the visa process to favor education and skills over family status.
“Of course the devil’s in the details,” observed Ron Hira, associate professor of public policy at the Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology and a longtime critic of the H-1B program. “It says they’re going to raise wages substantially, but we don’t know how much. That’s a real key issue, that the wage floor is too low for H-1Bs, in my point of view.”

“I think it’s going to impact a subset of outsourcing firms, like Cognizant and Tata, while leaving others like IBM, Accenture and Deloitte unscathed,” he continued. “IBM, even though they’re importing lots and lots of H-1Bs and have more workers in India than they do in the U.S., still has less than 50 percent (of total employees being visa holders).”

“I think it’s a move in the right direction, but I think it’s not going to fix … the pretty obvious problems with the H-1B undercutting American workers.” Hira called the proposed increase in green cards “generous,” but considers other provisions to be a view into IT-company lobbying.

“The increase in advanced-degree holders is from 20K to 25K, but they push for the base cap to go from 65K to 110K,” he said. “You would think from the rhetoric from the industry that [advanced degrees] are what they want, but I think what you’re seeing is what they’re really lobbying for.” He calls the industry’s suggestion that foreign STEM graduates are often forced to leave the country after graduating “is more of a bait-and-switch than anything.”

The Industry’s View
On the other side of the debate, Robert Hoffman, senior vice president of government relations for the Information Technology Industry Council says his organization likes the proposed shift from a family-based immigration system to one more focused on skills. The revamped approach, he says, “will focus it more on innovation and remaining competitive.”

Still, there’s a lot to digest in the measure’s H-1B provisions. Hoffman calls some of them “very strict,” so his group is working with members to determine their impact.

“Basically, we like some of the fundamentals. We like what we’ve seen on green cards. We certainly like trying to increase the numbers on H-1Bs and putting in some kind of market escalator. But there are a lot of requirements that require close examination before we say anything positive or negative.“

The Brooking Institution’s Ruiz thinks businesses might be concerned about the labor-market test that the bill would require before hiring H-1B holders, though he referred to the proposal as “market light.” The bill, he pointed out, would allow students to get into the queue for green cards, and focuses more on skills than country of origin.

“It’s a comprehensive approach. It seems very thoughtful,” he said of the bill, which was hashed out to combine a couple of previous efforts. “On H-1Bs, it considers both business and labor interests – to protect American workers and protect American businesses. For the Senate, this bill looks pretty workable ”

The Senate Judiciary Committee plans two days of hearings – Friday and Monday – before the bill goes to the Senate floor. Still one issue remains murky: How far apart the Senate’s approach will be from the House of Representatives’. As Hira points out, the House has a different perspective, and a range of different interest groups will be weighing in with its members.

http://news.dice.com/2013/04/17/immigration-reform-h-1b-proposals/?CMPID=EM_SV_UP_JS_AD_LC_AD_&utm_source=Cheetahmail&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=&utm_campaign=Advisory_Lifecycle&om_rid=AAGso-&om_mid=_BQI8$-B8tYqRPk&dadv&om_rid=AAGdBC&om_mid=_BRcBF8B8yB-TyC

I do not see anything special about this bill, this is not immigration reform at all, passing this bill doesn't change anything and the senators that introduce this bill clearly lack ideas on immigration reform.

... and Indians would use up the visa quota by filing for their spouses to work in a laundromart. Vicious cycle! grin

Seems like Africans don't benefit so much from these immigration reforms. Look at the DACA program last year, I believe the only people eligible are hispanic. To crack down on visa fraud, won't it be fair to have alloted spots based on nationality like they do for the DVLotery? I just need a GC, that's all.

I feel you jor.there is no way country like Nigeria will benefit from high skill immigration because of countries like india and the whole of asia except they use a quota system. We benefit more from the visa lottery howbeit mostly unskilled immigrant. But I think the visa lottery should be retain if they want diversity in the usa because it brings people from countries with low immigration to the usa.I do not want the visa lottery to be scrap , they can increase the minimum qualification for entry if that helps.

US Immigration Reform Bill

So, I was reading the immigration reform bill proposed by the senate gang of 8 earlier today. It turns out that it is still meaningless to me.

The only thing I am concerned about is the F1 path to green card or citizenship which they weren't even clear on. They only proposed to increase the number of HI-B visas for STEM graduates. And that even requires a company to sponsor/file for you. Shouldn't we be given green card straight upon completion of our studies? I think the proposal is rubbish.

Source: http://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/686464/130417-immigration-bill-schumer.pdf
A bill that offers automatic green card for F1 masters or Phd graduate will very hard to sell,Even if such bill is pass a company has to file for the green card .Otherwise offering green card to anyone with a masters or Phd from any school will create more problem for the us economy and defeat the purpose of the bill.Remeber how the indians have capitalize on the H1b?What I see is they might reduce the wait time it take to get the green card, some countries like India usually have a wait period of like 5 or 6years.I am very sure the bill will hasten the process of getting a green card and also reduce the restriction placed on spouses of potential green card or H1B holders.

IbukaDantata: You are just ignorant.... Majority of girls want a sincere guy who makes his intentions known right from onset.
I got married to my wife after dating for 5 yrs, I was in year 3 when she entered year 1 in same faculty, we met in the library, we disagreed over an issue, later met again in her class, I couldn't sleep coz I was thinking of her. I told after some months that I love her and I will want us to be friends more than just school mates, she was 23 then.... She told me categorically that she was not interested..... And she started avoiding me.
In my final year and in her 3rd year as we did a five yr course, I called her many times and she refused to answer ....... Then one day, after stalking her for years, I caught her reading alone in her class late in evening, I walked up to her having made up my mind that she is the one and told her that I love her and will be glad if we can work something out towards being together forever. I told her my mind,.....
She then looked at me the way she never did and said....... That will be a very difficult courtship as we are both still students, I told her yes and that if we are true, the difficulty will make our relationship stronger....... That is how we started our 5 years courtship and today... We are happily married.
Plus both of us graduated with the best grades available in our respective sets.

The truth is there is not rule if u are sincere, friendship might be a deceptive word of convenience to allow u freedom of adventure..... But if u want true relationship, u have to be sincere from onset.
Courtship and friendship are also not the same..... One is responsible while the other is a tool used for ''counting census''

Thanks man, your story is so inspiring wish others can learn from your post.

Prettychyna: Hello house,I have been following this thread for sometime now and I must commend everybody for their contributions. please I need your expert opinions, I recently got admitted into texas tech university for fall 2013 for phd in human development and family studies(area of concentration is gerontology).I was also offered graduate assistantship. I have bachelors degree in nursing science. I finished NYSC last year oct and have been working in a private hospital since then. my 1-20 has arrived and am about to book for embassy appointment. Please, I want to know what to expect during the interview.
I applied to 3 schools all in texas but got one admission. I also did both GRE and TOEFLE. Is there need to go with bank statement since I have funding? How is the school? And what are the likely questions to expect? Thanks in advance
First congrats on your admission.I do not think you need the bank statement since you already have full funding. Does the funding covers living expense as well? It doesn't hurt to go with a bank statement anyway but hardly will any student pay for a Phd degree so I am very sure the visa officer will not bother about the bank statement. However you need to prove that you are going to return to Nigeria after your studies, thats what am going to worry about if am in your position.Think of how you can demonstrate strong ties to nigeria to the visa officer.Good luck

Also, can you or anyone please enlighten us about the STEM Bill?

Thank you.
Getting better means the economy is booming and if you are from a country like Nigeria you dont have to wait for like 6years for your employer to file your green card, you can actually file it at the same time you are filing the H1B.I will explain the stem bill later or yvete should, need to go now.

Employers racing to file their H-1B visa petitions can stop. On Friday, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services reached its limit on H-1B petitions that are subject to the cap, the USCIS announced.

In just five days, the USCIS says it received more than enough petitions to fulfill the statutory cap of 65,000 H-1B petitions and 20,000 H-1B advanced degree exemption petitions since employers were allowed to file the paperwork on April 1.

According to the USCIS, it received a total of 124,000 H-1B petitions that are subject to the cap. Last year, the cap was reached in 10 weeks and the year before that it took roughly three times longer in the face of a sluggish economy, The Brookings Institution noted in a report. And while the cap was reached in lightning speed this year, the fastest in five years, it still doesn’t compare with the one-day record in 2008.

Now that the cap has been reached, the USCIS will use a computer-generated random selection process, otherwise known as the “lottery,” to chose from all the submitted H-1B petitions to find the final 65,000 statutory cap H-1B petitions and the 20,000 advanced degree petitions. A lottery date hasn’t yet been selected, because of an overwhelming number of petitions.

These fiscal 2014 H-1B petitions will then go on to the State Department, which has the final say on issuing the visas. Last year, the State Department approved a total of 135,530 H-1B visas, which includes both the combined cap of 85,000 statutory and advanced degree H-1B visas and the uncapped H-1B visas issued to non-profit and government research centers. The USCIS is continuing to accept H-1B petitions that are not subject to the cap.

So, in other words, stay tuned to see how many H-1B visas will ultimately be issued for 2013.

Things getting better for prospective F1 student, hope they pass the stem bill this year.
