On Friday, court of Appeal Benin Division granted the prayers of five prisoners seeking the order of the court to direct the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to include all prisoners in the voter register.

Justice S. Oseji, delivered the lead judgment on behalf of Justice Helen Ogunwumiju. The appeal was filed by five inmates on behalf of other inmates in Nigerian prisons. Those that filed the appeal are Victor Emenuwe, Onome Inaye, Kabiru Abu, Osagie Iyekekpolor and Modugu Odion.

The judgment affirmed the judgment granted by a Federal High Court in 2014, that prisoners can vote. However, Oseji did not grant a declaration that INEC liaise with the Nigeria Prison Service to create a registration centre at various prisons across the country.

Speaking to newsmen after the judgment, Counsel to the appellant, President Aigbokhan of the Initiative for Rural Development, Information and Legal Advocacy (IRDILA), urged INEC to commence immediate registration of inmates across the country for them to participate in next year’s election. Aigbokhan said they would appeal some aspects of the decision of the Court of Appeal.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential standard bearer in the 2019 elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar, yesterday promised to restructure Nigeria within six months if given the opportunity to be the president of this country, calling the All Progressives Congress (APC) “a party of liars”. The former vice president stated that he would send Buhari back to Daura, his hometown in Katsina, after the 2019 presidential election.

“This Buhari must go,” the PDP presidential candidates told teeming party supporters at the ancient Mapo Hall, Ibadan, in the Oyo State capital. Atiku, who was accompanied by chieftains of the party led by the National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, and Director General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation and Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, stated that the ruling APC sold lies to Nigerians in 2015. His words: “In 2015, some liars, deceitful people came here to deceive us and we gave them our votes. But we have discovered that they have failed to deliver all the promises they made to Nigerians.

In the history of this country, the best prosperity, peace, educational advancement were all enjoyed under the PDP. “He (Buhari) promised us jobs. But instead of giving us jobs, over 12 million jobs have been lost. They promised to alleviate poverty, but we are becoming poorer as a country. Now, Nigeria is the poverty capital of the whole world.

bout 63 lecturers and other staff of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) have been relieved of their duties for alleged certificate forgeries, sexual harassment and extortion. Also sacked were adjunct lecturers of the school who have over-stayed in the university. Most of the staff sacked were said to have obtained their West African School Certificate Examination (WAEC) before their First School Leaving Certificate.

They were also said to have falsified their age, certificates and other relevant credentials. Their sack followed audit report submitted by a committee set up to verify credentials of workers of the institution. There were reports that over 300 persons were affected by the sack, but the management of the institution stated that only 63 were dismissed.

Some of the lecturers sacked for alleged sexual harassment are – Chinedu Ogah of the Department of History and International Relations and Dr. Egbo of Faculty of Education. Some other lecturers are being tried for same offences. Public Relations Officer of the university, Patrick Itumo, confirmed the sack of the lecturers and other staff to our correspondent He said: “That is the reason for the action we are talking about; the disengagement.

They are not over 300 as being speculated. As I speak to you, they are 63 in number that have been disengaged.

Ayodele Fayose, The Former Governor of Ekiti State, escaped death in a road crash on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

His media Spokesman, Lere Olayinka, broke the news of the accident on his Facebook account, where he said the former governor was in a stable condition and receiving medical treatment at the moment.

Olayinka had stated: “He is in stable condition as I write while he is receiving medical attention.”

The former Chief Press Secretary to Fayose, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, who confirmed the accident in a telephone chat with The PUNCH, said, “It is true that he was involved in an accident, but a minor accident.”

Adelusi disclosed that the governor’s car rammed into a stationary commercial vehicle on the bridge, saying: “Nobody sustained injuries. The governor’s car only had minor damage.

“He is already on his way to Ibadan for the Peoples Democratic Party presidential campaign rally for the South West billed On (Thursday),” Adelusi said.

A bust sculpture of Nelson Mandela, known as Madiba in South AfricaMadiba in South Africa, was unveiled at the Beijing Jintai Arts Museum to commemorate 100 years since Mandela’s birth. It was also used to mark 20 years of diplomatic relations between South Africa and China.

The bust and inscription were contributed to by the SA Embassy in Beijing and Consulates General in Shanghai and Hong Kong. SA Minister of Arts and Culture Mr. Nathi Mthethwa was present as a guest of honor alongside other senior government officials.

During the unveiling, the national anthems of the Republic of South Africa and the People’s Republic of China were played, and a number of guests placed flowers under the statue.

2018 marks 100 years since the birth of Nelson Mandela. The former South African President is globally renowned for his selfless contribution to the global struggle against oppression and the fight against apartheid in South Africa.

“Globally, Madiba is renowned for his role as a great negotiator and a living symbol of reconciliation. He is a symbol of unity in a country, South Africa, which is courageously grappling with the legacy of a vicious past,” Mthethwa said during his speech.

He explained that when Mandela and his compatriots were jailed for life in 1964, China was among the countries that sent protest notes and called for their release. Subsequently, China was one of the countries that Mandela visited after his release from prison. Given the historical ties between South Africa and China, said Mthethwa, it was Mandela who embraced and ultimately promoted the one-China diplomatic policy, which saw South Africa and China establish diplomatic relations on Jan. 1, 1998.

CAF Awards South Africa AFCON 2019 Hosting Rights
South African Football Association president Dr Danny Jordaan has confirmed that Confederation of African Football, CAF urged South Africa to seriously consider hosting the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2019 tournament.

The tournament was initially scheduled to take place in Cameroon, but CAF decided to take those rights away from them following delays in construction of stadiums.

Jordaan told the SAFA AGM in Sandton on Sunday that the continental football governing body has asked South Africa to seriously consider taking over as AFCON 2019 hosts.

The SAFA president returned to South Africa on Sunday morning after attending CAF’s Extraordinary Executive Committee meeting in Accra‚ Ghana, where the decision to dump Cameroon was taken.

The report also revealed that SAFA would meet the South African government first before making a decision on whether to accede to the request.

South Africa last staged the Cup of Nations in 2013 which was won by Nigeria.

The 2019 event is scheduled for June 15 to July 13, a change from its traditional January-February slot and it will be the first to feature 24 teams — up from 16 at the 2017 edition in Gabon.

When Emeka Okechukwu, a corps member serving in Niger State, first got to Paiko, a town about 25 kilometres away from Minna, the capital city, he didn’t have any complaints. But that was before he arrived at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in the town.

On getting to the camp, Okechukwu’s first impression was that it was a huge eyesore which ought to be demolished. According to Okechukwu, the poor state of the orientation camp immediately made some corps members to regret coming to the state to serve their fatherland.

“I am not pleased that my colleagues and I have to be sleeping and sitting on bare floor in the camp,” he said.

The floor, according to him, is infested with dangerous insects including bedbugs.

He said, “The temporary orientation camp in Niger State is nothing to write home about; the whole place looks deserted and I wonder why NYSC would allow such a camp to exist.

SAN FRANCISCO – Alphabet Inc’s Google in May introduced a slick feature for Gmail that automatically completes sentences for users as they type. Tap out “I love” and Gmail might propose “you” or “it.”

But users are out of luck if the object of their affection is “him” or “her.”

Google’s technology will not suggest gender-based pronouns because the risk is too high that its “Smart Compose” technology might predict someone’s sex or gender identity incorrectly and offend users, product leaders revealed to Reuters in interviews.

Gmail product manager Paul Lambert said a company research scientist discovered the problem in January when he typed “I am meeting an investor next week,” and Smart Compose suggested a possible follow-up question: “Do you want to meet him?” instead of “her.”

Consumers have become accustomed to embarrassing gaffes from autocorrect on smartphones. But Google refused to take chances at a time when gender issues are reshaping politics and society, and critics are scrutinising potential biases in artificial intelligence like never before.

“Not all ‘screw ups’ are equal,” Lambert said. Gender is a “a big, big thing” to get wrong.

Getting Smart Compose right could be good for business. Demonstrating that Google understands the nuances of AI better than competitors is part of the company’s strategy to build affinity for its brand and attract customers to its AI-powered cloud computing tools, advertising services and hardware.

Gmail has 1.5 billion users, and Lambert said Smart Compose assists on 11% of messages worldwide sent from Gmail.com, where the feature first launched.

Smart Compose is an example of what AI developers call natural language generation (NLG), in which computers learn to write sentences by studying patterns and relationships between words in literature, emails and web pages.

A system shown billions of human sentences becomes adept at completing common phrases but is limited by generalities. Men have long dominated fields such as finance and science, for example, so the technology would conclude from the data that an investor or engineer is “he” or “him.” The issue trips up nearly every major tech company.
