Agriculture / Visit Catfish Farms and learn Practically! by nikaShow(m): 11:18am On Jan 07, 2016 |
So you have heard of fish farming in Nigeria? Catfish farming is Lucrative ! You want to venture into it? You have interests in learning practical and having hands'on experience on catfish farming in Nigeria. Let's give You what 'e-books' can never give you'. A practical one on one training on catfish farming in Nigeria with visits to 'successful and profitable catfish farms'. Despite countless good threads up here in Nairaland, I have learnt and observed that 'head knowledge can never replace one on one training and practical sight'. I also think some writings here are 'overhyped'. As a practicing fish farmer with years of experience, I now own my own fish farm and I consult for other fish farms as well, I wish I had seen and known 'somethings' before I started, I want to help people by showing you how to manage different resources that you have to run a successful fish farm venture. You may have water flowing naturally on a land, or no such water source, but have space in your backyard with a borehole or wells, or live in such an environment that prevents huge water to be poured out Fear not ! Take the Ibadan Farm Tour and Practical Catfish Training ! In this Ibadan fish farm tour, we would take you to these 'profitable' and differently setup fish farms . 1. An Earthen pond fish farm, with 1 of the ponds being as large as 2 plots of land. 2. A Mobile Pond fish farm- the whole farm is mobile and can be dismantled and moved to another location in hours ! Yes, you heard that right- the whole farm ! 3. A Recirculatory system fish farm- a farm that recycles all it's water, and pumps it back into its fish tanks. 4. A Floating fish feed producing farm- the difference between imported (durante/coppens) and locally formulated fish feed is usually that our local feeds sink whilst floating feeds are preferred. This farm produces, uses and sells it's own local fish feed that floats. 5. An hatchery- for 'making' 'baby' fishes (fingerlings production) 6. A Concrete Pond fish farm- using concrete ponds to raise fish-its advantages and peculiarities. So now after seeing all types of ponds and farms and fish ventures, you can then decide which aspect/type of fish farming would best suit your needs/resources! Are you ready to pay the price for experience and success? The tour lasts for 2 days and costs **k only. The schedule is flexible. Call Akin of Asher Farms on 08161385163 to book your Catfish practical training and Tour now! Cheers ! 3 Likes 2 Shares

1st pic: Plantain propagation chamber. 2nd Pic: Different types of maize, some fortified with specific things. 3rd pic: This is for soyabean. It's an inorganic fertilizer. They said it gives a 45%increase in soyabean yield per acre. And the pack works for 0.25ha. Called it 3$ per pack. Sounds fair to me... 4th Pic: Maybe because I am a fish person I wasnt too impressed with the Fish of their 'IIYA' sha...though the least size they sold was 1.5kg

Some other interesting things- 1st Picture is a 'museum' of seeds, kinda like an archive. This are collected seeds. They said this are the kind of groundnut and cowpea that our parents and grad parents eat but we don't grow again because it takes extra time to prepare, but they think it's as nutritious, so they collect and preserve the seeds. Some were straight up black, striped, coloured etc 2nd, as usual- plenty oyinbo everywhere with their bicycles, shorts etc- it's not a new thing for IITA frequenters sha- and we are all treated the same, no discrimination or preference. 3rd Pic: A raffle draw was held, first price gets a tour to an African country. Unfortunately, I no win am ...many consolation prices around though

This bag (3rd pic) produces the small yam tubers in second pics which when replanted give the large yams that the farmer needs. The bags are used for propagation exclusively...but am sure someone here is thinking of some sack farming already. I think it would work well for potatoes.

Now I know a lot of nairalander farmers would be interested in this one ! I am too ! It's a weeding machine! And I heard it's available for sale. It's imported and can work between furrows depending on the spacing. As You can see from the teeth, the thing would scatter all those unwanted weeds! 1 Like

This are plantain 'seeds' ! The seeds can only be cultured in a green house as the germination rate is still very poor and so it's not yet available for sale. but Kudos to them as they seem to be actively working on this innovation! The seeds are transplanted in 3 stages of growth and acclimatization before they take to the field. So IITA in ibadan had its annual open day today. The event which was strictly by invitation was both informative and entertaining. As a research institute, many agricultural innovation were on display. Find some of them below. I'll just let the pictures do the talking. 2nd Pic: Yours truly and the DG of IITA, Dr.Nteranya Sanginga. He has been the DG since 2011. He is from DR of Congo and well traveled and verse. You can Google him. Further enquiries on any of the products should please be directed to their office in ibadan as I am not an IITA staff. Though there are some things I saw that I am going to personally follow up and acquire, as I am hugely vested into agriculture as well. 3 Likes
