PoliticsWith Biafra It Is Finished - Gowon by Noneroone(op): 6:33pm On Oct 24, 2015
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has dismissed threat of Nigeria’s unity as he also said that with Biafra it is finished and

General Yakubu Gowon made this statement recently in reaction to the resent protests by some youths.

He said that Nigerians have put behind them the bad memories of the 1967 civil war, and that those behind these protests on Biafra don’t have an inkling what the Biafra war cost Nigerians.

The elder statesman speaking in Lafia, the Nasarwa State capital shortly after a malaria eradication campaign questioned that ‘do they want us to go to another war? but hoped and I prayed to God that such should not happen.’

He went further to say that those involved in this campaign were being driven by just a few people and that majority of the Igbo people do not share the same view.

‘It is only them, the few, that are there but the majority of the Igbo people that I know are not with them’

Acceding to the fact that the protesters have the right to express their feelings he stated “with Biafra it is finished”.

He said these people ‘let them say their views, yes it democracy but let s make sure they can express their wishes and desires but let them remember with Biafra it is finished. it is not a threat’

He further said that keeping Nigeria one was behind all that he did and not for hatred for the Igbo as that was what Odumegwu Ojukwu also stood for.

All I did is not a result of hatred against the Igbos but on the principle of keeping Nigeria one and this is all we are trying to do and that was why at the end of the war in other to see that there is no heard feeling we used the term no victor no vanquished

I have said if there is anything of this sort anywhere in any part of the country just like the problem of Boko Haram we should deal with it, Nigeria should deal with it in matured way .

It is disrespectful and insult to tag our land what you wish to tag it and not what we want you to tag it. It is our land and the only thing for you to do is to respect it. It doesn't matter whether it was given us by the Brits or congolese, what matters is what we(as owners) view it. We view it as PortHarcourt and Not Igweocha or whatever. The least you can do is to respect our position. We can't accept such open show of disrespect Sir! It is Our land, PHC belongs to us and it is exclusively in our place to determine the name of the city.
you are very mischievous. The original name of port harcourt is Igweocha. This is not an Igbo imposition. if it was an igbo imposition, it would have been Ugwuocha which is central Igbo dialect. Nnamdi kalu does not refer to it as ugwuocha but igweocha. this is the honest truth which any human with integrity shouldnt dispute.you said we should respect your position but your position is fraudulent. port harcourt is not your land your land is okirika and nobody is chasing you away. you like us to call igweocha portharcourt but call okirika okirika to protect your identity. it is not honorable

TonyeBarcanista:
It is a straightforward case! I maintained that Respect for SS as a group and as individuals. If you an Anioma man believe in casting aspersion on ND Greats like Boro and Wiwa is your choice. In fact, it has even put a fence and has knocked out ANY proposed country between us(Ijaws specifically) if the mainstream Igbos hold on to this belief. As long as Ijaws, Ogonis, Ikwerres, Binis, Urhobos etc are concerned, Isaac Boro and Wiwa are part of the heroes of Niger-Delta. I wish Abacha had granted the proposed Warri state. As for the treachery aspect, you(Anioma) may accept it but my people and others from the region are saying that they don't accept it. It is unacceptable for anyone to insult our forebearers and present generation unjustly. If this is held by mainstream Igbos, then I have to restate that the proposed united country won't work. Maybe an Igbo only and/or those that agrees with this position. But it is a No-No for the Ijaws especially
mischief is written all over your post.
BTW you aare entitled to your own opinion. nevertheless, i must say your statement is not true. you are accusing igbos of forcefully taking minorities into biafra while at the same time attempting to speak on their behalf. the truth is SS is not one. other SS groups see Ijaw as aggressive pugnacious and dominieering. ijaw fight with urhobo and itshekiri over ownership of warri, fight with ikwerre over portharcourt (as you are doing) "fight" with Efik and Ibibio over who the fourth largest ethnic group is. even saro wiwa an ogoni regretted fighting for the creation of rivers state because of ijaw dominance.

TonyeBarcanista:
I am not speaking for you! Neither am I speaking for others. But I am telling you that the position of the Ijaws, Ogonis, Itsekiri, Urhobos, Binis, Auchi's, Ikwerre, Ekpeye etc must be respected WHATEVER it may be.
stop using other groups to fight for your ijaw interest.

I neither disputed nor agreed by the claim that some IPOB youths arrested were indigens of Rivers state. I won't comment on that.

My position on this subject is very clear and wouldn't want to drag it. It is not about PDP or APC but about outhe South-South people. If the Igbos want a united SSSE front(which is very good), then we must define terms of agreement. Some of the terms are;

1. They stop calling PHC as 'Igweocha' because the status of Portharcourt as the exclusive property of Rivers people as presently constituted is non-negotiable.

2. Respect for our Greats like Isaac Adaka Boro, Ken Saro Wiwa and every other Niger Deltan Heroes. Also respect for our fathers and stop calling us 'Traitors' because I can't remember any treachery. The respect must also be to our present generation that have been bearing pains to swallow pills they never bargained for.

3. Respect for the decision of South South people as a whole and as individuals on this subject irrespective of their/our/my position. Irrespective of whether they agree with some of your position or not.

These to me are very fundamental to real unity. We don't have to fight each other.

Ikology:
The level of hatred and disunity being spread by the recent IPOB activities believed to be championed by southeast Igbos is increasing at an alarming rate. Worst of it all is the belief that it was the southeast Igbos that protested in Port Harcourt for Nnamdi Kanu to be released, even though names released proved otherwise. Though Mr. Truckpusher, Hopeathand and Jpphilips believed the protest was masterminded by southeast Igbos. My appeal is for southeast Igbos to follow Abagworos argument line when issues bordering portharcourt is discussed. Yes there are indigenous Igbos in Rivers State, please allow them to determine their faith. Stop making them feel intimidated. They should be the one voicing it out.
if you believe the protest was done by Igbos in the east how then are you sure these guys you mentioned are what they claim to be? it all boil down on believing what you want to believe just to feel happy. that is the major problem of Nigeria - self delusion
PoliticsRe: Is Biafra Igbo? by Noneroone(m): 9:50am On Oct 24, 2015
ezeagu:
An apparent minority is pushing for secession of eastern Nigeria as Biafra, while the majority of the Igbo remain silent, and let's be honest, the silence is as a result of a people who would ideally like to be on their own but understandably do not want to invest in many different ways in something that may end up bad in also a variety of ways including a repeat of the 60s. The problem however is that not only is the movement very chaotic at the moment, but there is confusion as to where Biafra is. Many are saying that the whole of eastern Nigeria is Biafra, but I think this is really a mistake the Biafra secessionists are making. I believe that the area known as 'south south' are not as enthusiatic about a Biafra as the secessionists would like to believe. In fact all the major protests have taken place only in Igbo land, and particularly in the five Igbo states. And I'm sure some would say they know someone in Ogoja or someone from Calabar who joined them in protest somewhere, but to be honest these minute amount of people doesn't change the point that overwhelmingly the sentiment about seceding or a 'Biafra' has been and has been perceived as an Igbo thing. Check the names on any 'Biafra' message for example. I have encouraged an idea of an 'eastern' unity within Nigeria here before, but following from the sentiment that eveyone should respect themselves and the autonomy of others, it my deep belief, considering history even before the Nigeria-Biafra war, that the Igbo people, if there were ever a secession, should form a nation on their own, or at least a federation as a country like England in the United Kingdom. I believe the nature and goal of an Igbo person will continue to be misunderstood by anyone and I do not want a situation where an Igbo person will feel they are held back because they don't want to be seen as overdoing anybody.

All of these thoughts were solidifed by the recent writings of Alabo Abiye Akkio-Abbey here https://www.facebook.com/alaboabiye.akkioabbey/posts/10153267949980028 and the replies by people from his community, some I have attached.

Another early morning bomb attack has occurred in a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno state, killing and injuring many worshippers during the early morning prayer session, witnesses said.

The blasts, according to residents occurred in Jiddari Polo area at about 5am when Muslims were performing the first congregational prayer of the day.

Details of casualties are still sketchy as security officials have cordoned the area while rescue and aide workers tried to evacuate corpses and injured victims.

But a spokesman of the local Civilian-JTF, Abbas Gava, told PREMIUM TIMES that “it was two bomb explosion in a mosque in Jiddari Polo, very close to the Federal High Court complex. We are still trying to get the correct figure of casualties”.
PRNigeria, an agency that distributes press statements on behalf of Nigerian security and rescue agencies, said rescuers from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had so far evacuated six dead bodies from the scene of the attack.
The PRNigeria gathered that the incident occurred during the early Morning Subhi Prayer at a mosque behind Magistrate Court Polo Area in Maiduguri.
The agency said “the explosion was carried out by a suspected lone suicide bomber whose two accomplices escaped, when some vigilant members of the community accosted them on their suspicious movements”.
It quoted a senior health official as confirming that six bodies had been deposited in the mortuary, while about 17 other injured victims were being treated at the Specialist Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

…4 shot, 15 injured in Onitsha as agitators storm Port Harcourt, Asaba

From Chris Anucha & Tony John, Port Harcourt; Paul Osuyi, Asaba and
Aloysius Attah, Onitsha

Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, was literarily shut down for several hours yesterday by members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), who now preferred to be known as the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Members of the group defied the early morning rain to protest the arrest, detention and trial of the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
This is even as the protest in Onitsha, Anambra State, turned bloody, four people were shot and 15 were injured by policemen.
Kanu was arrested in Lagos last Wednesday by the Department of the State Security (DSS), arraigned in Abuja court and granted bail.
The protesters, drawn from different parts of Rivers State, assembled as early as 7am before they took over the major streets of Port Harcourt, causing heavy vehicular and human traffic in Aba, Azikiwe, Ikwerre, Rumuola roads, among others.
The protest was said to have also been replicated in Oyingbo and Ogoni areas of the state.

The group had on Monday warned residents and traders to stay at home yesterday or risked incurring the wrath of the group.
At the popular Ikoku junction, along the Ikwerre Road, policemen fired teargas to disperse them at about 12:27 pm; but it seemed not to have effect on the number of protesters.

The protesters, who were non-violent, alleged that the Federal Government was determined to relegate Igbos to the background, vowing that no amount of intimidation and harassment could dampen their spirits.

Security operatives were seen in patrol vans and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) behind the protesters to avert possible breakdown of law and order.

In Asaba, chanting songs of solidarity, the placard-bearing protesters described Kanu’s arrest as uncalled for and totally unacceptable, insisting that they were no longer comfortable with the Nigerian government.

Secretary of the group, Nnenna Nwaoha, said, “we have suffered enough in the hands of the Nigerian government and we are no more comfortable with it.

“We want our freedom, that is why we are here. We are not comfortable with the Nigerian government, the intimidation, killing and all that; that is why we want our freedom. We feel very bad about his detention and it is affecting each and every one of us. We are not comfortable, we want to go,”he said.

The protesters were, however, denied access into the Government House by security operatives who were on guard. No official of the state government addressed them.

In Onitsha, Anambra State, a similar protest was dispersed with teargas when police swooped on them. The IPOB members numbering about 500, mainly women, marched from Amawbia junction with placards and were getting close to the Government House gate in Awka when police mounting guards fired shots in the air and teargased them.

Speaking on the incident, the IPOB Coordinator in Anambra, Ikechukwu Okoye, told Daily Sun that they were marching along Government House, Awka when police attacked their members, shooting four and arrested about 15 others who are being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka.

He said they were on a peaceful protest, noting that the police have seized two of their vehicles.

He said one of their members, a pregnant woman, fell into the gutter during the attack and sustained injury with her two-year-old baby.
Okoye noted that they were dissatisfied over the treatment meted on their leader Dr. Kanu and had wanted to call on Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano to appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene on the matter.

According to him, “we are only freedom agitators who obey the laws of the land, this is democracy and there is freedom of speech, freedom of movement etc.”

Gathered under the aegis of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Delta State chapter, the protesters, mainly women, demanded the immediate release of Kanu, describing his arrest as uncalled for and totally unacceptable.

Chanting songs of grievances and displaying placards which bore various inscriptions such as “Freedom for Biafra, free Nnamdi Kanu”, “We are not terrorists, we are freedom fighters”, “We are tired of intimidation and harassment by Nigeria Government”, “Biafra on the move” amongst others, the protesters said they were no longer comfortable with the Nigerian government.
Speaking during the protest, Secretary of IPOB, Delta State chapter Nnenna Nwaoha, said: “The reason for the protest is for Nnamdi Kanu to be released; we have suffered enough in the hands of the Nigerian Government and we are no more comfortable with it.

“We want our freedom that is why we are here. We are not comfortable with the Nigerian government, the intimidation, killing and all that; that is why we want our freedom. We feel very bad about his detention and it is affecting each and every one of us. We are not comfortable, we want to go.

“The federal government should release our Director, Dr. Nnamdi Kanu and we also want our freedom. As a nation that is due for freedom, we want to go; we are tired; the suffering is too much; it is not a crime to want our freedom; we want to go.”

Also speaking, Chineye Udeoba expressed bitterness at the detention of Kanu, saying “we are bitter and we are giving them a strict warning and order to release him.

“We are not Nigerians, we are Biafrans. My father is seventy-two years old and he is older than Nigeria. He is a Biafrian, I am a Biafran and we all here are Biafrans. We the indigenous people of Biafra are ready to go. We want to be on our own.

“The British came and amalgamated us with these Oduduwa and Arewa people, we are not one; we were never one, we are totally different in terms of tradition; we are Biafrans. We want to be on our own as indigenous people of Biafra. We want our freedom.

On her part, Mrs. Judith Ihebiehi said: “This man is our voice, he is our mentor. We have been in darkness all these while, so this man has been speaking for us, so the Nigerian government has no right to detain him; he has done nothing.

“Have they ever asked themselves if what this man has been saying is false? Have they bothered to verify what Nnamdi Kanu has been saying? So detaining Nnamdi Kanu will bring problems; we have been calming our husbands down, we have been saying ‘wait’ we women will go to the government, we will talk to them and say this is what we want; we don’t want problem that is why we are here.

“Our reason of coming here is to tell the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to help us take our message to the federal government. He is not the one detaining him but we are here to tell him to take it to Abuja.” The protesters were however, denied entry into the Government House by police officers
