I am not sure that they were "making huge margins before and that margins have now dropped significantly after listing to the ngx". Sometimes, we hold beliefs that may be incorrect and then use them as the basis of our arguments.

Now, let’s look at the facts and some estimations:
MTNN was listed on the NGX in May 2019. I checked their financials prior to that, since the NGX portal usually keeps at least one financial year before listing. In 2018, they made about ₦1 trillion in revenue, ₦140 billion in profit, and had about ₦200 billion in shareholders’ equity. Debt was also relatively low at about ₦140 billion. This doesn’t reflect the kind of drastic margin changes you are claiming.

Then there’s the issue of the repatriation of funds, which the Senate at the time claimed was $13.9 billion between 2006 and 2016 (an accumulated figure over those years), later narrowed down to $8.1 billion. Assuming an average exchange rate of ₦170/$ during that period (a conservative estimate, since the actual average was lower), $13.9 billion converts to about ₦2.36 trillion. Dividing that across the 11 years (2006–2016) gives an average of roughly ₦214 billion per year. Again, this does not suggest drastic margin changes.

Earning about ₦214 billion per year with low borrowing—especially in the early years before Glo entered the market, when MTNN enjoyed higher rates and aggressive charging patterns—indicates they were consistently profitable. In light of this, I don’t think MTNN is manipulating their books as you are insinuating. But if you have facts or clear assumptions that suggest otherwise, feel free to bring them forward. lipsrsealed

It was reluctantly listed.

Listing was part of the agreement for them to settle the issues they had with FGN..

Because they were repatriating profit to South Africa might also be another reason why they are highly leveraged.

Lafarge Africa was in Nigeria for about 60 years, but never invest heavily in Nigeria busy repatriating profit to France now they are playing catch up with Dangote Cement and BUA cement who are younger than Lafarge in the industry.

Same with Mobil Oil, Total Energy (down stream), they enjoyed subsidy windfall from 1993 to 2023, but never had a reserve which they could use to build a refinery in Nigeria, with the coming of Dangote Refinery and end of fuel subsidy, they will struggle for survival and profitability
They are going the way of the dodo

I also don’t buy the argument that floating allows a currency determine its true value. So called true value is what marketers and investors are willing to price it at at that time and must not necessarily be determined because you floated or did not float. Governments float however, in order not to drain their reserves because like in the filling station example, people no longer see the need to queue at filling stations when the price at black market is thesame and you are likely to get it faster.

My analogy may not be 100% similar but I used it to highlight the similar market forces at play.

You are right that demand for dollars reduced because it’s high but when I view our trade data, it hasn’t been that significant. For instance, compare imports of manufactured goods and raw materials in Q1 2023 to Q2 2025 or even Q4 2022 (Q4’s generally see increased imports) to Q2 2025. I don’t see that significant drop in imports but I would do the calculation for you.
Nobody cares if you buy the argument or not. The rest of your post just shows you don't know what floating the currency means

You guys can be fighting your stock picks/recommendations war. That's normal. What is not Normal is putting out incorrect information. Nobody chased OGG away. He was canversing for customers and trying to divert members to his group where he offered paid service. Even though that was not in anyway a crime/offence, it negates the whole essence of this thread.

He stopped commenting either because he has had enough customers to sustain his paid services or because he was no longer getting more customers from here. Nobody chased him away because of his stock picks.

Also, please beware that no matter how accurate your picks and predictions are there will always be people with contrary opinions. Infact even God that created the Heaven and earth human still go contrary to his commands. The only difference between the people that fronted/marketed aradel and transpower with those in Ellahlake and Oando is the emotions and intolerance attached with Oando/ellah fans nothing more.
If you guys want a non toxic space to discuss investments you can always hop over to ngxforum.com

You’re going in circles here. How do you know it was price and emotions driving their decision? How do you know it wasn’t an institution placing its money there? What’s your angle in labeling a trade as “dumb money” or “smart money”?

You’re not even a technical analyst. As far as I know, if you don’t have direct knowledge of whether the investor is an institution, the closest way to spot smart money is through charts. Let’s be humble — just because your analysis says a stock is not correctly valued doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways of extracting an edge from the market. lipsrsealed
Put this response in the context of the initial post and my subsequent comment and re-evaluate your position

ositadima1:
I’m really amused when I read posts like this — the assumption that you know all the available information and can therefore judge who is dumb or not. Then the market moves, and you won’t see people like you coming out to apologize when that same stock doubles. Respect everybody’s choices. You don’t necessarily know more than the person who put their money on the line. You don’t know their time horizon, and you don’t know the game he or she is playing.

Also, you don’t judge a decision solely by its outcome. The world is probabilistic — something may work for the wrong reasons, or fail even when the reasoning is sound. Unless you know the reasoning behind a move, don’t judge. lipsrsealed
https://www.investopedia.com/investing/surprising-benefits-when-brokers-grade-their-customers/

Average individual investors who trade money are often shoved under the “dumb money” umbrella. If you fall into this category, try not to take offense. The terms “dumb money” and “smart money” were coined by the financial media, not to insult anyone’s intelligence, but to describe different groups of investors.

Big institutional investors and mutual fund companies are labeled “smart money.” These investors have somewhat of an unfair advantage over your run-of-the-mill individual investor. Armed with teams of experienced investment analysts, “smart money” investors can evaluate exactly what’s going on in the market, allowing them to make more informed investment decisions. This does not necessarily mean they always make smart decisions—in fact, plenty of them make bad trades from time to time. They simply have access to valuable information that allows them to make a more educated choice.

On the other hand, the average investor generally does not have the time, experience, or patience to methodically analyze corporate reports or the global economy. Because these investors don’t have access to teams of analysts or carefully compiled data, they often make trades based on instinct or a gut feeling. Consequently, the “dumb money” group tends to buy and sell investments at the worst possible time.

Basically If you invest in the market based on price rather than value then you are dumb money.

I understand fundamentals but whatever the investor that spent over a billion naira @ 12.5 saw, one need not to climb the mountain to see it. The information is common sense to say something major is coming. Those privy to the information have and are still taking position. Time will reveal and the game is the game.
There is a lot of dumb stolen money in Nigeria oh. Don't assume just because you see a big trade that the trader has sense

That is Ellah's luck.I even expected it above N30 by now.
The stocks on the sector where it is listed is over a thousand naira per share. They believe, with time they can do better.
The noise makers here are the ones helping Ellah to reposition but they don't know.
Those that have the stock should hold it tight.
The future is looking very bright for them.

Loco is among the people who called Ellah out some months back. They responded to call positively and working on turnaround.I have to succumb and align with them for good.

Loco does not have a single unit of Ellah as at August 30.I May have it in September or anytime when I feel to trade it
I am going to do a write up on my thoughts regarding the palm oil sector in Nigeria.

I have been thinking about it all day and my conclusions may be surprising

Obviously the write up will be on my site so if anybody wants to read they know what to do

Locotrader:
My own take on this matter is this;
The time Ellah is a riskier investment has passed. All investments are risk averted but the case of Ellah as at now is no longer a risk. The risk is not so severe like when we started.Loco is a living witness to attest to the past of Ellah.

I believe the mgt is addressing the issues on ground and share price will rise above N50 in the nearest future. It is a gradual process.Presco and okomu passed through metamorphosis.Ellah is passing hers' now. When the desired funds are there, all will become a story.

Those who don't like it has only one option.
Go to court and leave investors here to breathe.

Your opinion is well approved and appreciated by Loco.
The real issue here is that some people are looking at price to guage the value of the stock while others, like myself, are looking at valuation metrics to value the stock.

I personally don't think the company is a fraud but given current market conditions the stock is expensive
