Wao!! This is an amazing forum. I wish i discovered it earlier.

OK. I'm just few weeks in Canada and trying to settle down and at the same time confused on the best line of action for me. I came in on PR with a wife and 2 kids age 4 years. I have been reading a lot trying to get insights on how to navigate in terms of career and jobs.

My wife wants to do a diploma in nursing starting Sept 2019 and she is about applying. However, from what i am seeing in my job search in the last 3 weeks, it seems to me that getting a higher role will be difficult at this time. By the way,i have B.Eng mechanical engineering and all my work experience has been in utilities management in manufacturing companies. In fact, i think i want to go back to school and do a one year college certificate program next year and the two courses that are coming into my mind is Power Engineering and Process Quality Engineering.

Please seniors in the house, i have some few questions

1. What do you think about the two courses in terms of jobs from what you have seen so far in Canada?
2. I read we can get an OSAP loan. However, if we get the OSAP funds and I and my wife get into school at the same time on full time basis,is it possible to work part time during the period to keep going for the period considering we have two 4 year old boys in JK? Is this doable? or should i wait for her to finish first or i go first?
What will be the best way to go about this because we do not want to get stuck in low key jobs.
if you want to go the power engineering route, Calgary catholic immigrant society CCIS, has a power engineering program for new immigrant with degree in mechanical engineering. its a bridging program pathway for power engineers it is done in affiliation with SAIT, to get 5th and 4th class power engineering diploma and certificate of competence. i think you should visit CCIS in downtown, Calgary and make more findings.
Its completely free and you will be paid every month for 9 months during the programs. people have had good successes with jobs after the program. that is also largely dependent on you!. As expected it is highly competitive, you have to write exams and interviews to get in. But nothing is impossible.

But for overall job prospect for these courses...i leave that to our seniors here to answer, maternal, salford.

My ppl,
I get one small question
I got ppr last year, successfully extended my submission date to end of this month.however passport will expire in June. Can I submit the passport for my CoPR? Renewing passports is becoming something else.
I am aware that my visa will expire at my passport expiry date which is earlier than my medicals. What I don't knw is if they will approve the visa on a passport with roughly three months to expire.
Oya family ....mk una answer!
My submission clock is ticking.

What can one do about a past employer who refuses to include roles/duties to a reference letter? Reason is that it is not part of their policy to state such.

This past employer provides workers to a vast number of institutions so turn over rate is very high. Individual (from central head office and not in city where I worked) sending generic employment letter may not be able to confirm my exact job function

Meanwhile i have an employment letter confirming role, full-time employment, number of hours worked etc but letter is silent on role/duties. Payslips and bank statement are available. Advice? Anyone gone through this?
I had similar issues with my current employer.

So i had to submit the following in this order (first to last page), and in one pdf file

Email correspondence with HR personel showing my request and their response, stating why they cant grant my request
The generic letter from my company (No job roles and duties)
Two paged reference letter (required format) signed by a colig (in my department)included his phone number, email and address(certified it in court)
A scanned copy of his ID card front and back (certified it in court)
Scanned copy of my ID (certified it in court)
Tied everything up with LOE explaining why i couldnt provide a reference letter with the required format directly from my employer.

Its my current employer, so for your case, employment letter, letter of resignation etc. may be included. I did the same when documenting for my former employer too.

My pay slips, bank statements came under my pof. You could try other approach as well, there is really no hard and fast rule anyway, you re simply trying to be as convincing as possible with your documentations and its important you leave no stone unturned in the process.

This worked for me, i hope it works for you too.

I was able to extend my passport submission deadline after PPR by 90days.
If you are in a situation where you can't meet up with the default 15 days deadline for submission of passport docs after PPR, just write to CPC Ottawa and back it up with scanned docs supporting whatever your reasons are, that should sort it out.

So don't put urself in a box or in some kind of panic, if u need to extend, just send a mail.

@Coltrane thanks alot bro.

Compliments of the season my ppl

Congratulations grin grin grin.. oya give us the timeline sharp!
ITA July 12
AOR Aug 5
Medicals passed Aug 18
IPI Aug 19
Aug 26 daughter was born
ADR sept 5 schedule A submitted
Sept 18 added daughter plus her medicals
Sept 18 - Dec 5 school of patience. cheesy
Dec 5 still on IP1
Dec 6 got a letter of refusal for pof issue (shared my story on page 66)
Dec 7 wrote to cpc and raised a CSE
Dec 8 started new app
Dec 9 submitted new app CRS 459, waiting for ITA
Dec 10 sent another mail to CPC & raised another CSE on old app issue
Dec 14 got update on old app...refusal was reversed
Dec 15 rprf request
Dec 15 NA2
Dec 17 paid rprf
Dec 18 IP2
Dec 19 withdrew the new app.
Dec 22 PPR

For some, this timeline is just few simple lines, but for some of us our process was rigorous, fraught with lots of issues. But what is key is the result, as long as we all converge at that same point, the rest is history. So be encouraged, life is preparing us for what we would eventually meet out there in the great white north. Most times it takes perseverance, tenacity and resilience to pull through and get what u want in life. There are challenges everywhr and every step of the way. Never leave the rung, keep on climbing, you never know, victory might jst be a step away.

Thanks to you all for your contributions, I'm grateful.

Thank you nairaland
