Christianity EtcRe: Why Don't Women Cover Their Heads In Church Anymore? by nuella2(f): 3:03pm On Jan 05, 2011
Question: "Should Christian women wear head coverings?"

Answer: 1 Corinthians 11:3-16 addresses the issue of women and head coverings. The context of the entire passage of 1 Corinthians 11:3-16 is submission to the God-given order and "chain of command." A "covering" on a woman's head is used as an illustration of the order, headship, and the authority of God. The key verse of this passage is 1 Corinthians 11:3 "But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God." The implications of this verse are found in the rest of the passage. The order is: God the Father, God the Son, the man or husband, and the woman or wife. The veil or covering on the head of a believing Corinthian wife showed that she was under the authority of her husband, and therefore under submission to God.

Within this passage is also verse 10: "For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels." Why is that important to angels? The relationship of God with men is something that angels watch and learn from (1 Peter 1:12). Therefore, a woman's submission to God's delegated authority over her is an example to angels. The holy angels, who are in perfect and total submission to God, expect that we, as followers of Christ, be the same.

This covering not only means a cloth but also can refer to a woman's hair length. How can we say that? We must take this verse in the context or the setting in which it is presented. "Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering" (1 Corinthians 11:14-15). Therefore, in the context of this passage, a woman who is wearing her hair longer marks herself out distinctively as a woman and not a man. The Apostle Paul is saying here that in the Corinthian culture, when a wife's hair was longer than her husband's, it showed her submission to his headship. The roles of the male and female are designed by God to portray a profound spiritual lesson, that is of submission to the will and the order of God.

But why is hair an issue in this passage? The Apostle Paul is addressing something in the Corinthian culture that was being allowed to disrupt the church. Women in service in the pagan temples had their heads shaved. It marked them as pagan temple prostitutes. Paul says in this passage that a woman who is shorn or shaved should be covered (1 Corinthians 11:6), for a woman shorn or shaved of her hair had lost her "glory," and she was not under the protection of a husband. A shorn head without a covering was equivalent to saying, "I refuse to submit to God's order." Therefore, the Apostle Paul is teaching the Corinthians that hair length or the wearing of a "covering" by the woman was an outward indication of a heart attitude of submission to God and to His established authority. This was important because the Corinthian church was to be separate from the corrupt pagan culture of Corinth (2 Corinthians 6:17).

God's order is that the husband is the head of the wife as God is the head of Christ, but there is no inequality or inferiority implied. God and Christ are equal and united, just as the husband and the wife are one. This is not a passage that teaches the woman is inferior to man or that she should be submissive to every man. It is teaching God's order and spiritual headship in the marriage relationship. In the Corinthian culture, a woman who covered her head during worship or when she was in public displayed her submission to authority.

In today's culture, we no longer view a woman's wearing of a head covering as a sign of submission. In most modern societies, scarves and hats are fashion accessories. A woman has the choice to wear a head covering if she views it as a sign of her submission to the authority of her husband. However, it is a personal choice and not something that should be used to judge spirituality. The real issue here is the heart attitude of obedience to God's authority and submission to His established order “as to the LORD” (Ephesians 5:22). God is far more concerned with an attitude of submission than an outward display of submission via a head covering. First Timothy 2:9-10, "I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God."

xgel:
I'm aware that in some places women do still cover their heads, but looking at my bible it clearly says in 1 Corinthians 11:5-7 that women should cover their heads while in prayer. Is their some later verse that nullifies this? And if there is then why is this passage included at all? I was taught at my Christian school that the bible is 100% literal, but if that is so then every time a woman prays with her head uncovered then isn't she knowingly sinning? And why is it "dishonorable" for a man to cover his head in prayer?

The poster did not ask a question, he is telling us what he was taught in the school he attended. i know his stand and your stand on this issue by reading your posts. If a lady do not cover her hair she is sinning ko? show me in the bible. What did you get from the verse i quoted? The laptop am using now do not have a bible, so cant quote scriptures now.

But covering of hair is not a custom the body of christ should follow. It was a traditional believe that has to do with showing a married woman. Like the red indian point for married women. The veil in corinth is like the wedding ring of today. Paul was dealing with family matters there not for the church of christ. The veil signifies a married person in corinth, so if she comes to church without it is like keeping your wedding ring at home. And the covering implied there do not mean HATS, It signifies respect for your husband for the corinth woman. I think you do a proper reserch on that chapter.

And about women in must churches the talk about hair, dressing etc. They leave the men out and face the women . The men look modern and the women look like thier mothers, women have always been the victims of such doctrines. I didnt mean to talk anyone down, thats what i see. If is not true pls enlighten me, am willing to.

Women, women and women. Why do Nigerian men wear trouser to church? They should dress like thier grandfathers na. They teach women to look like maids while men in those churches look clean and foreign, this is so annoying. What has covering of hair got to do with christianity? whatever happened to 1corin 11v 16. Thats why i advice teachers of the word to be educated, cos illetracy make pple see what is not in the bible and make them think shallow. Some christians think smelling is holiness, looking like mary amaka is righteousness and eating noodle is sin. Watching TV was a sin, grace has covered that one now, dont make me laugh in latin o jare. Cover o, cover the hair, infant use the right thing VEIL, like the wife of the Imam. Those women should do a research on the kind of covering the corinth women were using and copy them rightly, not hats. Am waiting here, with my uncovered hair.

Great story but the men of God you criticise everyday have done great sacrifices for the gospel too. I know of a pastor that use to sleep in the venue of a church, he left the comfort of his family and there was no toilet around and was using a nearby bush. I think you shld do a research on men of God, how they started before they became big. Personally i have treaked for like three hours to a village, we even crossed a river to preach the gospel to the villagers. Most of the villagers dont even speak English, we looked for an interpreter. But if i become famous tmrw, pple will call me a charlatan, not considering what have done for the sake of the gospel.

You are the one who said you can give opaks "anything" which implies you can give yourself to him. Such acts are not uncommon in sects were their leaders are idolized.
Dont try to play smart with me here mr man, when someone makes a statement dont you know where to draw the line? If a mother tell her child i will kill you today, what does it imply to you? When you say 'i serve Nig with all my strength 'while reciting the national pledge, what does that imply to you? Abi it means Nig is your IDOL.

This is a RELIGIOUS forum not a gathering of prostitutes and pimps. If I say something you dont understand you should ask an intelligent question, like what do you mean? rather than saying YOU KNOW I WILL CHEAPLY GIVE MY BODY TO HIM. Like you know me personally and what am capable of doing. Those words imply you are sure not assuming or asking me. I cant tell you, you slept with your sister or pastor's wife, why? you claim to be a christian and its not expected of you to do that. So even if you make a statement that looks somehow, i can only ask you, what you mean? cant categorically say, you will cheaply sleep with your sister, it only shows the kind of heart i have.

^^ what is "jeolousy"? Online dictionaries abound, ma'am.

And you still exhibit limited mental range - must everything be spelt out for you? Who said Chris Yaks is your only idol? Was THAT image the only one your ancestors had?

It is the idea, not the specifics. Idolatry is wrong. Capishe?

Btw, Kunle faced YOU above. You left him and faced his mother. Good training from your idols
Go and sleep, you dont know anything about having idols. And what makes you think am not someone's mum too. Check all my posts in NL if i have ever used such words on anyone. I think you advice your kunle to have some respect for pple, especially in a forum. He doesnt know me personally and have no right to address me in that manner.

I am happy for you, I am sure you wouldn't hesitate to even give your self to him cheaply if he as much gives you a hint. Afterall christ embassy adherents are not known for their moral values.
Are you talking to me or your mother? If she taught you how to respect women, you will not write that nonsense. I demand an apology from you for that insult.
nuclearboy:
@nuella:

You're mistaken. Apparently, your understanding was that I said you were replacing God with your pastor. I apologise for not making it clear. When Moses went up to collect the 10 commandments, the israelites asked for a 'god'. They didn't want to replace Yahweh with gold and silver - they just wanted something they could relate to BECAUSE Moses was not in front of them. But God took offence all the same.

Jesus is not physically in front of you but like Moses, is with the father and thus you want/need moral support, a power to guide, bless, encourage you,  That is the idol you have made of your pastor. You all claim to have left Egypt but then refuse to grow up in God. Your pastor too is in the 'type' of the molten image and calls himself god too - a lie.

Point is, God won't change His mind - He insists ALL Glory and Honor be His. That is what I meant and it is different from replacement. What you are doing is adding 'another' god. According to the Word, a fake god. Which is why in YOUR OWN WORDS, you'll sell your gold (just like the israelites too gave theirs for their molten god which they made by themselves)
stop writing nonsense, your problem is jeolousy. I said i sold my gold cos  i wanted to buy my cousin a gift, cos i give precious gifts. And i will sell my property if need be for my pastor's birthday. Why didnt you say my cousin is my idol too? Go back and read my posts before posting nonsense.
Christianity EtcRe: Today [december7] Is Pastor Chris Birthday by nuella2(f): 2:59pm On Dec 14, 2010
why are these guys quoting me everywhere?

Nuella said there is nothing she cant give to pst chris. Yeah i said it.

What is wrong with that? What if i say there is nothing i cant give to my husband or mum. Will you still call my name everywhere? You shld know what i meant by that statement. it simply means he is dear to me, i can give him something that is precious to me. That do not mean he has taken the place of Jesus christ in my heart. When a husband calls his wife my one and only, does he mean she is his everything? EVEN HIS GOD?

Let me clear the air, pst chris is my dear pastor, i love and esteem him highly but he is not my God as nuclearboy is TRYING TO MAKE IT LOOK.

If i can sell my necklace to buy my cousin a gift, i will sell much more if need be to give for my pastor's birthday, is what i meant by 'there is nothing i cant give to pst chris'.

l love this thread.

I remember when i was in school, i went to preach in one of our lecture halls when i saw the number of pple there i could not preach, i only went quietly to a lady and preached to her. But i have always desired to preach in buses, schools and market. So one day, while travelling, i made up my mind to preach the gospel of our lord and saviour Jesus christ. For the first time i was able to preach publicly in a bus and from that day it became my lifestyle to preach in buses. Evangelism is what Jesus commanded us to get engaged in, until he returns. But sadly most christians do not preach the gospel, to friends, famlily members ctc.

Preach to someone today.

OK let me enlighten you on offer7. In christ embassy we celebrate our pastors, leaders and members on their birthdays. Mostly its a surprise, so we call it a name which they dont understand what we are saying. Pastor chris birthday is called 'offer7', we have some other names like, E 21, Vision 17 etc. For your information its not only pastor chris's birthday we celebrate, my birthday was celebrated when i was i cell member, i wonder the name they called it, maybe N3. We appreciate and celebrate each other from pastor to members.

We give towards the celebration of our pastors birthday willingly and not by force, i can count how many times have given for pastors bithday, cos i didnt know the importance until recent, all those times nobody forced me to give. As a cell member several gifts were given tp me, when i got home my uncle asked jokingly if i got married that day.

Offer7 is not a scam, just a name we use in calling his birthday. There are other names around the ministry(E21, vision17, Vision 10, etc.)there names even for members.

I make sacrifices for pple i love, when my cousin got married some months back and the cash i had was not enough for the kind of gift i wanted to buy for her, so i sold my gold necklace. I have only one opportunity in the whole year to celebrate and give my pastor a gift for being a great pastor. Pastor with all of my heart thank you for teaching me the word of God and i appreciate it. Thank you and happy birthday again. Words are not enough to express what a great father you are but in heaven you will receive an award for this live you changed from afar through the television. Thank God you were born today years again and you devoted your life for the master. Christianity EtcRe: How Joagbaje Became God by nuella2(f): 10:15am On Sep 20, 2010
Hello men and brethren, I see alot going on around  here about christians been deity/divine/god/. Its really inspiring and through the diff views of posters. Nuella what is ur view? I ask myself, ok let me begin. Christians can easily accept they are kings, soldiers because the bible said so. A soldier to endure hardness and be tough and i ask do christian wear military uniforms and live in tha barrack to prove they are christains and everybody scream NO, GOOD. Again a King in the eyes of men have a palace, throne, title etc. So i ask are you a king in God, and everybody shout, yes, am royalty the bible said so.1 Peter 2:9
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

So you are king without a palace and throne abi? You became a son of God when you became born again but do you have a birth certificate?,,,,everybody shout, its by faith and spiritual not natural , ok,

So if i say am a god/divine/supernatural, why do pple questions like, so why do eat food? and who and who worships you. And i ask as a king where is your palace and throne? And they ans it simply means God has given us dominion and rulership on earth, ok, i agree. So why cant pple agree that am divine cos i have the live and nature of God. Am i citizen of heaven, i was not born not of the will of men but of God.
2 Peter 1:3-4
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: [4] Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

I must not be worshiped before i become god/ deity. I carry a supernational person inside me. Am the temple of almighty God. I stop natural laws, by supernatural means. What more can i say, am not just a man, ordinary mere man, God forbid. What an hopeless place. I have an indestructable, uncharmable, unperishable life of christ in me, and that life is from ABOVE AND THE LIFE IS ABOVE all circumstances and challenges i face in live.

1 John 5:11
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

1 Cor. 3:16
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

So the temple of God is ordinary ABI? The life i received from christ is not divine but natuaral, KO? I dont know about you but am divine big time, kai, make me wanna shout halleluyah! If natural men drink poison unknowly what will happen but with the divine if you drink unknowly

Mark 16:18
They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

If a serpent come accidentally we shall shake it off like Paul
Acts 28:5
And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm. . Why didnt he feel no harm, the divine life.

Am a king cos a have rulership, a soldier cos am to endure hardness am a god cos i command life circumstances to bow to me. And am the kid the God, made in his likeness and image, weda na half trait of God you think i have,i have it anyhow. Till Jesus comes i will call myself all the names God has called me, Gbam.

Joagbaje:
Some women like to have control and lead the home, this is what gave birth to some of these scriptures
The issue of submission of the woman has to do with headship in the home. God relates to us through leadership. That doesnt make the woman a slave. A soldier must recognise leadership in the army and obey the instructions of his leader , that doesnt make him less a soldier than his leader .

The woman submits to the man according to the word but that doesnt make her inferior to a man in the society. But as far as her husband is concerned, she ought to play the supportive role.

1 Cor. 11:9
Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
true talk.

This is from crown church.

if no-one has done greater physical miracles, then did Jesus lie?
God forbid! I am glad to let you know that Jesus did not lie. As the Holy Spirit wills, God may use believers (not just some selected species of men claiming to be ‘anointed’) to do certain physical healings and miracles.Note that Jesus tied the ‘greater works’ to His going back to the Father, meaning His death, resurrection and ascension to Heaven. The cross opened the door for the greater works, but of a different kind. What works did Jesus not do during His earthly ministry? In John 5:21, He said, “For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will“. Here’s a comparison between the raising of the physical dead and the raising of the spiritual dead. While Jesus was here on earth, He never raised those who are spiritually dead. Why? Regeneration of dead souls/spirits could not take place until the cross was accomplished. But after His death, resurrection, and ascension, those who weredead in their trespasses could then be made alive together with Christ (Ephesians 2:5).The Greater Works
A clear study of the subject shows us that the greater works Christ spoke about is works of a different kind than what He did while physically present on earth – the spiritual regeneration that takes place when the Gospel is preached.Someone may say, “But it is God that regenerates spiritually!” I say, it is God too who raises the physically dead; not man. Raising a dead man is as much a divine act as regenerating a spiritually dead man.More importantly, raising a man who is dead spiritually is infinitely a greater work than raising a physically dead man. Think about it, the physically dead were being raised all through Bible times before and without the price Jesus paid. On the other hand, the regeneration of spiritually dead people was impossible without the death, resurrection and ascension of the Lamb of God.ConclusionJesus said that believers would do the works He did – and we see from Scriptures that this is possible but only as the Holy Spirit wills. Unlike Jesus, no-one can – or has been able to – do it at their own discretion and with 100% results.Secondly, we see that indeed, Jesus did not raise any spiritually dead people to life during His earthly ministry, but that since His death His followers have been instruments in God’s hands to bring the spiritually dead to life. Preaching the cross of Christ is presenting ourselves as vessels through which God’s greater works are being done today: getting people born again.

Is this from ROR?

Christianity EtcRe: What It Means To Be "born Again"! by nuella2(f): 10:59am On Apr 21, 2010
No man was born again until Jesus died and resurrected. All the men of old were righteous and walked with God like Abraham but he was not born again cos Jesus has not shed his blood then. I tot you people attend crown church, go back to that website and read the articles there. Or ask Kunleoshob to help you. Infact is in that website they said the greater works Jesus promised us is leading people to christ(born again).

Abraham and co will inherit Gods kingdom cos in thier era, the criteria to enter was not to be born again. But in this generation we need to be born again to see the kingdom of God.

2 Cor. 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Romans 10:9-10
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Christ brought about the race of God's kids that are born again. Before his death and resurrection it was not possible for any man to be born again.

Matthew 19:29
And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

Mark 10:29-30
And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, [30] But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

Added to eternal glory, Jesus said in this world, while we are here we will have land(fixed assets). Jesus did not say wait until you get to Heaven and enjoy, when Peter asked him in Mark 10:28. If we are to suffer lack and want on earth Jesus would have said so, he promised us hundredfold here on earth.

@aletheia
forgiveness= remission  can you explain. You mean if a prostitute keep on asking for forgiveness after the days job. Her sins are remitted? What will you tell her to be saved? What is the first thing she needs to do, to receive christ as her lord or just ask for forgiveness for her immediate sin.

John 3:3
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

John 3:5
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

What do you say about the above scriptures. When the apostles met unsaved people what was the message? To help a criminal is it just to be bail him from police cell each tell he commits crime or to teach him to stop been a criminal.

Conelius was a devout man but he still needed to be born again, why?

Acts 10:2
A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.

The man prayed always, i think he  must have been praying for forgiveness to, but Peter still had to come and preach christ to him, so he can be born again.

About ROR where did i quote it? pls show me.

chai!!! this is pathetic. The elementary doctrines of christianity has become a problem. Understanding righteosness in the old testament era and the righteosness of faith that is a gift now as become difficult to understand. I tell people is not by grammer and been religious in a sense, that make someone understand scriptures.Someone can quote every verse in the bible and still be so ignorant. I feel like crying. How can a christian not know the diff btw what the blood of Jesus did and the blood of animals. Even as simple as how to become a christian, the kind of prayer to make. Who is a sinner and what made him a sinner?
When a sinner become born again what he obtains and becomes by grace. Was anybody made righteous by grace in the old testament? What brought about grace today?

Elementary doctrines like this that every 3months old christian should know sef.

A fish is a fish weda he refuses to swim in the river he is living in, abi he do not drink water again from that river he is living in. What makes him a fish is his nature. So is a sinner.

If a teacher declares the standard to pass his paper, that is it. If you like write all you know that the teacher did not instruct you to, you will still fail. If the teacher says the standard to pass his paper is to write his name in capital letters. An intelligent student may decide to see the exam as too simple to be true, but thats the instruction if you want to pass.

2 Cor. 5:21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Romans 11:6
And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

Ephes. 2:8
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

We are saved by grace through faith. What a gospel(goodnews).

This confessional prayer is what the sinner needs.

Romans 10:9
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Wow!!! what a thread.

A sinner is not more of a sinner when he sins. The Adamic nature that he inherited made him a sinner. The cure is Jesus christ.

Romans 5:12
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Romans 5:15
But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

They are not to be compared. Jesus christ is THE WAY, THE ONLY WAY TO THE FATHER. HE IS NOT ONE OF THE WAYS.

@ Enigma

Even if two or three christians that gather for fellowship, they are to grow. Is not a village meeting, if they know what they are doin, they will certainly go out and preach the gospel to people. So lets say they bring in two converts every month, before the end of the year they will have atleast 24 members added to them. Members were added to the the early church daily, so the gathering should not just be a bible discussion class and eat meat pie without preaching the gospel. Such a gathering is unfruitful. My point is even if they start small in ten years time they will not be small, unless the gathering is for critics who do no work but only talk about whats wrong in other gatherings.  Personally i cant be part of a group that do not atleast go out to preach the gospel once a month. Then what is the gathering for?
