PoliticsRe: To Become A Millionaire In North America Is Hard! by Obiagu1(op): 3:52pm On May 18, 2012
afam4eva: @OP
You have a point. But you have to understand that not everyone cares about being a millionaire. Many Nigeria will kill to have a decent life like is obtained in America.
I agree but such decent life could be attained in Nigeria too over the years as a result of accumulated wealth. But in Nigeria, very poor people with no special talent or education could still get wealthy within their lifetime. In North America, NO!, not in your lifetime but could be your (great) grand kid that continued from where you stopped. cool
PoliticsRe: To Become A Millionaire In North America Is Hard! by Obiagu1(op): 3:48pm On May 18, 2012
Nebeuwa: And this is why Nigerians suffer from "Get Rich Quick" schemes. This thread is an example.

OP is you want to make a million or more, create something innovative. The United States is the best place for people to follow their dreams.

This is the same country where Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple was born out of wedlock, put up for adoption at birth, dropped out of college, then changed the world. He did it in America.
Like I said, it's only the super talented that make it these days be it Bill Gate, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg or Larry Page. God damn you if you were born poor and have no special talent.

blink182: Dude, seriously you need to educate yourself. If I step into that country, I will only seek part time jobs to learn some important skills for free. As to making money, I will do that as an entrepreneur.
LMAO! Well I won't doubt you because you could be a genius!
But I tell you, most people that want to stop working for someone and become entrepreneurs are moving back to their countries.
PoliticsRe: To Become A Millionaire In North America Is Hard! by Obiagu1(op): 3:10pm On May 18, 2012
Most North Americans have a pretty good life, despite not having anything near 1 mil in NW.

Makes no sense to say, "Hey, it is hard to be a millionaire in location A, therefore X, Y, Z about the life of your median resident of location A."

Your logic is faulty.

Plus...it is easier to be a millionaire in say the US than in most other countries. Dunno if the same is true of Canada or Mexico, though.
Good life? Yes, many live a pretty good life because the countries in North America (the US and Canada only) have accumulated wealth over the years. They now have a mean wealth that could be termed liveable. Could a story of an "untalented" guy like Dangote or Ibeto making it to the top in today's North America be told? Maybe not in this generation or next.
PoliticsTo Become A Millionaire In North America Is Hard! by Obiagu1(op):
It is so hard to become a millionaire in North America today. Their economy is structured to encourage the rich to get wealthier and the poor to remain poor and working class citizens.
You can only become a millionaire if you make music, you do sports, you become an actor/actress, through inheritance or you win a lottery! You can also become a millionaire if you are a damn good programmer. Only a few actually get to the top of their companies to have a chance of becoming millionaires. Apart from that, you'll remain a damn worker and battle all your life to pay off your mortgage. If you get screwed, you lose your damn house to your wife when she leaves you and you end up in an apartment. sad

This is why Nigeria should try not to copy Western economy as it is today. The likes of WalMart and Shoprite should be resisted else the ONLY avenue for the poor to make it to the top of the society will be swallowed up by large retail stores and everyone else will work for them for a meagre pay.

Let's be wise!

Johndoe100: Yoruba people, always scheming and ploting evil. Brrrrr... What a nasty lot.
I heard that this Suleiman Mohammed is the actual leader of Boko Haram and has ties with Obasanjo while the late Yusuf Mohammed was a mere foot soldier and a preacher.
This has been a covert operation by the Yoruba to destabilise the core North. sad
PoliticsRe: JTF Arrests Boko Haram Sect Leader Suleiman Mohammed In Kano by Obiagu1(m): 1:08am On May 12, 2012
Wonders shall never end! So Boko Haram was created by the Yoruba?
Why should they have to base in the North and not in the SW?
EducationRe: Is Intelligence Overrated: What You Really Need To Succeed by Obiagu1(m): 3:37am On May 11, 2012
@ OP, what an excellent piece by the author!
Those with very high IQ more often than not end up in laboratories and schools; they are often wage earners rather than wage payers.
These three factors, EQ, MQ, and BQ, are far more important than IQ when it comes to wealth creation.

I've known this from my days in school, many of those with high IQ are still working for someone whereas some of those we looked down on are way ahead, they pay people that work for them and are wealthier.

No, dat is not what i mean. Its not about westernization, its being fully aware about right and wrong! What if the person is a lefty? He shud not use his hand again?
Being left-handed can't stop one from giving out something with one's right hand, can it?

I know I can give out something with both left and right hand though I'm right-handed.

PoliticsRe: Why Do Nigerians Use Shocking Titles? by Obiagu1(op): 6:45am On May 04, 2012
^^^

The problem is not really about appending degrees or memberships/fellowships at the end of ones name, that's normal in educational/professional settings (note educational settings but will be outrageous in social settings which Nigerians tend to do). The number of appendage depends on the individual or the objective. Those are not really the title I was talking about.

The title I talked about are those before ones name. You'll see people introducing themselves with ridiculous titles like Arch. Bleep or Engr. YYY. Some even like it long, introducing themselves as Chief Prof Dr Engr Mrs Otondo.

naptu2: duate with a doctorate degree as their first degree in medicine. Maybe out of uniformity, those countries whose first degree in medicine is bachelors also go with Dr. It's not because they are called "nicknamed" doctors.

Right, so maybe because Nigeria wants to be "uniform" with Holland, that's why Nigerian engineers have the title. By the way, they are given that title by law (now an act of parliament), it's not a "nickname".
A beg move on, you're so ignorant!
PoliticsRe: Why Do Nigerians Use Shocking Titles? by Obiagu1(op): 6:23pm On May 02, 2012
I've told you you speak English. Do your research.
PoliticsRe: Why Do Nigerians Use Shocking Titles? by Obiagu1(op): 6:14pm On May 02, 2012
naptu2: Ok, so why the exception for medical doctors?

Also, if I may ask, ignorance of what?

Lastly, someone on this thread stated that, where he is at the moment (I believe it's in Holland. I'll find the quote) engineers use the prefix iec before their name. Is that also ignorance?
If you read my post well, you would have seen that I wrote medical students graduate with a doctorate degree as their first degree in medicine. Maybe out of uniformity, those countries whose first degree in medicine is bachelors also go with Dr. It's not because they are "nicknamed" doctors.
PoliticsRe: Why Do Nigerians Use Shocking Titles? by Obiagu1(op): 6:06pm On May 02, 2012
naptu2: Only if it's permitted by law.
Ignorance is ignorance, you don't go about with what you studied at the university attached before your name!
All we do is glorify ignorance and it's so embarrassing.
The only ones that use titles are Doctorate degree holders irrespective of profession. Now the little exception is medical doctors, dentists etc who, in most countries, actually graduate with a doctorate degree (such as MD) as their first degree in medicine. Some countries' medical students graduate with a bachelors degree (such as MBBS) as their first degree and that's where the exception comes since they go with the title Dr. as well.

Clear your eyes!

naptu2: So whereas, in Nigeria the Chief Justice is Known as Chief Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais (CJN), in England the Chief Justice is known as The Right Honourable
(The Lord Judge) Igor Judge, Baron Judge (PC), Lord Chief Justice and President of the Courts of England and Wales.

Whereas in England an engineer may be known as Mr David, in Nigeria he is addressed as Engineer David (see below).

The decree specifies the abbreviation to be used by each cadre as follows:

A Registered Engineer shall use the abbreviation "Engr" before his name

A Registered Engineering Technologists shall use the abbreviation "Engn. Tech" after his name.

A Registered Engineering Technician shall use the abbreviation "Tech" after his name.

A Registered Engineering Craftsman shall use his full title "Craftsman" with his trade in bracket under his name.

A registered Nurse shall use the abbreviation "Nur" before his name.
A registered Economist shall use the abbreviation "Eco" before his name.
A registered Teacher shall use the abbreviation "Tch" before his name.
A registered Surveyor shall use the abbreviation "Surv" before his name.
A registered Geologist shall use the abbreviation "Geol" before his name.
A registered Accountant shall use the abbreviation "Acc" before his name.

PhysicsQED: I don't think this is about creativity or originality.

Calling oneself "Architect" or "Engineer" does sound ridiculous and pompous.

If Mr. Johnson got an undergraduate degree in biology from Harvard, he still wouldn't/shouldn't call himself or introduce himself as "Biologist Johnson". He should/would get a doctorate and then call himself Dr. Johnson. That's the simple truth that this thread is pointing out.
Thank you.

And so we'll always be behind, following.
It's not that you can't create, but before you rid yourself of "colonialism", you should first stop speaking English.

You speak English and not Ninglish.
PoliticsRe: Why Do Nigerians Use Shocking Titles? by Obiagu1(op): 4:49pm On May 02, 2012
@ rman

Whether COREN coined the title Engr. or not, it is out of ignorance. Nurses could start using Nur. too. How does it sound or you think they don't have their own association?

Again, Dr and Dr (Mrs) is out of order, it's either Drs. Bleep and YYY ZZZ or Dr. Bleep ZZZ and Dr. YYY ZZZ. You can't write Dr (Mrs)!
PoliticsRe: Why Do Nigerians Use Shocking Titles? by Obiagu1(op): 4:43pm On May 02, 2012
Some people don't get it especially naptu2, no one is talking about titles that exist. People use titles like Rt. Hon, etc. Such titles are valid so stop your numerous posts, they are out of order.

The titles Engr., Barr., Surv. and Arch. do not exist! You cannot find such in any commonwealth or English speaking nation and they are all purely Nigerian creation out of ignorance.

As an Engineer, I still go with Mr. but in professional settings, I only append PEng after my name. The only time I could have a title is when I get my Ph.D, then I will start using Dr.
