Car Talk / Re: Ask Me Anything About Ships & Maritime Career by Obnoxious2001(m): 8:37am On May 08

Congratulations on your degree...... I guess you know degree does not count at all when it comes to seafaring jobs.

There are two routes to seafaring jobs

1. Cadetship (Just like internship)
2. Ratings (This cadre can move up to officership if they wanna progress in their career)

You have to decide with route you wanna take............

1. Cadetship is the best way for you since you have a degree in Marine engineering, but it is always the hardest route to get due to Nigeria factor (Not enough ships to train all the cadets annually) and lot of companies loves recruiting cadet from schools like

Maritime Academy of Nigeria
Charkin Maritime
School of Fishery and Oceanography

In fact, I was recruited after my HND by a maritime company who came to school to source for cadets......

Cadetship requires you to have at least 12 months experience onboard, which is documented as ship stamps on your discharge booklet, then after completion of cadetship, you apply to NIMASA for eligibility letter, Depending on the type of ship you worked will determine whether you will be issued an NCV or Unlimited eligibility letter, which you will be interviewed before issuance, then you will take the eligibility letter to Maritime Academy of Nigeria to apply and pay for OOW preparatory class (Class starts every January to April and exams by June)

NIMASA will give out date for the exams and oral interview, If you pass, you will be issued an OOW license (The timeline for result to come out is around 3-4 months)

2. Ratings: This route is a very dicey one because it favours the host community very much, This slot is reserved for them as part of maritime company CSR, except you are very lucky to be employed as a rating onboard (This is most peculiar to offshore vessels)

This route requires you to start as an OS (Ordinary seaman) because you do not have an experience (Especially if you wanna work on tanker vessels)

But if you want to work onboard offshore vessels, Then you need get the following documents first:

1. International Passport
2. Discharge Booklet - Please kindly google to get more insight about this documents (You have to apply at NIMASA office to get this document, its available at Warri, Port Harcourt, Calabar & Lagos)
3. Yellow card
4. Seafarers medical fitness certificate - This can be done at authorized NIMASA Hospitals in your region (Check NIMASA's website to see lost of authorized hospitals)

When you've gotten the above-mentioned documents, then you have to register for Able Seafarer Engine watchkeeping certificate at NIMASA
Kindly note: You won't be registered for the exams if you do not have at least 12 months stamps on your discharge booklet, I know lot of folks fake ship stamps on their discharge booklet to apply for the exams, but that is not the best thing to do (Just the situation of not getting a job on ships are making people to do the wrong thing)

You will asked basic ship questions, engine room questions etc..... (This is why you need to have an experience as an OS before going for watchkeeping exams.

After passing the exams, The certificate will be ready in 3-4 months time which you then go for biometric at NIMASA office before collection of the certificate.

After collection of the certificate, this enables you to apply fully as an oiler ONBOARD offshore vessels.
Thank you sir 🫡.
I will be updating as I progress

Ask me Anything about Ships or how you can become a crew onboard, I will gladly answer your questions, Nairaland doesn't have a forum for ships, hence the car section might be a perfect fit

Note: I don't give jobs, but I can guide you on navigating through the maritime career path

I have been looking for an opportunity to give you an inner experience of how an offshore vessel looks like...

They are different types of vessels

1. Roro ship
2. Container ship
3. Bulk carrier
4. Crude carrier
5. Gas Ship (LNG)
6. Oil tankers

You can Google each of them to get an insight on what they do

I work onboard offshore vessels, that's why I'm gonna narrow my explanation on this type of vessels

We have vessels which provides vital services to offshore installations which include

1. AHTS - Anchor Handling and Towing vessel
2. ASD Tugs - Azimuth Stern Drive tugs
3. DSV - Diving support Vessel
4. PSV - Platform Supply Vessel
5. Seismic Vessels
6.Pipe Laying vessels

The above mentioned vessels are all available in Nigeria carrying out services for IOCs

Though I've only worked on AHTS, ASD Tugs even though other vessels are of the same configuration but they perform different tasks

The duty of AHTS and ASD tug is for static towing

Onboard a ship, we have ratings and officers and it has two departments

Deck & Engine

The Captain is the overall, that's why he's also called the master but the certification of the captain and Chief Engineer is the same

Officers
Captain
Chief Engineer
Chief Mate or chief officer
Second Engineer - This is my rank onboard
Second mate or second officer
Third engineer
ETO

Ratings (Depends on the type of vessel)
Bosun, also called QuarterMaster
AB
Oiler
Cook

Onboard the ship, my responsibilities are enormous, ranging from Main engine maintenance, generators, Steering gear systems, Air conditioning unit etc

I'm onboard, and the bandwidth is crazy to upload pictures, I may do that much later if the network is good

Sir I saw your post on another thread (marine engineer was mentioned so it diverted my attention)
I just finished my B.Eng in marine engineering, am looking forward to getting into the marine sector.

I will appreciate your guidance sir ( I don't have any papers yet am a total newbie)

I will be patiently waiting for your response

There is nothing that's permanently fixed in electrical appliances. Bolts/nuts are provided for easily access.......
If your inverter is under warranty and you try removing it, you automatically tempered it or make the warranty void

This is like saying Laptops are not good because once your board has issues you have to replace the whole board.

You can use a Laptop as CPU only, same with Hybrid, you can decide to buy external Charge controller and chargers it your choice.
What's the essence of buying hybrid if you will use am external cc...
You are already going back to the traditional ways.

I'm here to seek council. I just bought a betking shop and want to install solar instead of running generator. What solar package can adequately power a bet shop. That's going completely off grid. Please advise. Thanks

I think averagely an unoptimized betshop has a load of 1200w.

After optimisation, around 750-800w..
Your best bet is to optimise your shop first

See if you can get a single 625w Jinko panel, then.

Take measurements of the space you have. Compare.
Alternative is smaller 250W panels. They actually don't take a lot of space, so you can fit in a fair number of them.

I actually feel 250w x 2 performs better than a single 550w.
In terms of voltage mostly mppt setup and even pwm...

Hybrids are here to stay and have stood the test of time already. why are people still contemplating?
Hybrid gives you an Inverter, Charger, and MPPT, cheaper than any standalone.

example with 250K. you can have
a 3kva inverter with 60A charger,
80A MPPT, go and price stand-alone equivalent.

Hybrid allows you to customize slightly when grid charge, how much grid charge, when Solarcharge, Only Solar charge during the day and Grid charge in the night, etc. with standalone, you need to have good know-how and other tools to achieve these.

It's the repair and maintenance people are running from...

The money you saved initially, you will vomit it when you want to repair it grin grin grin.

Standalone gives you the advantage of easy repair or conversion. Even if I can convert your hybrid, I will not bother doing it.....

Depends on your load. Mostly 5 to 6kw inverter.

Next question should be choosing between transformer based inverter or chopper based? Cause 5M no b small money, @bassdow @bigbrovar and other experts make una pls come give expert advice. Anyone with experience with transformerless using iron and AC for like 2yrs no issues....

Go with transformer based inverter.
If you are concerned about idle current, go with torrodial core transformer based inverters (it's mostly Chinese inverters that has the transformer in them)

Apart from the quality of products, which may be a factory designed fault, every other thing you listed here is the false of the end users.
Take a look at the heating temperature of the inverter via the attached picture. Very few people do create time to open the sides of their inverter and clean the dust/blockage. Some people do not even remember it till they pack the inverter. This blockages do not always create room for air circulation/ventilation inside the system as the fans are blowing, whereby creating unnecessary internal heat within the closed system.

This is done to prevent dust and particles from going in.
It not meant to be removed

Hello
Please is it advisable to use a ceiling fan of 58W (+/-5W). It's a duravolt fan with a solar set up of 65Ah battery?

Also does charging power bank with the solar set up affect it?

Thank you
Any appliance that is energy saving is always acceptable.

No it doesn't
Try to get a fan that has an inbuilt battery it will work optimally with your kind of setup

Thats going sub-kernel. I also gave example of 200A that doesn't do sh!t when touched. So i know what you mean.
Amps, voltage, resistance etc all play a part. But for now let's leave it at amps.
That's why we would majorly watch out for amps and rarely internal resistance of the wire or the body itself coming in contact, etc; at least for non-industrial installs
Drops mic!

To further add to your point
For humans death occurs due to blood coagulation ( electrolysis) in case of DC. Where as in case of AC,Pulse rate changes when Heart tries to pump with the frequency of AC and causes heart failure.

We started doing the internals after we completed it, we supplied grid to see if the inverter will charge, inverter couldn't charge 🥲🥲.

We checked and disconnected the current limiter nothing changed.
We browse through the settings and nothing.

we were frustrated (this was happening around to 10 pm) and we were trying to head back to our destination.

Guess what, just long holding the ESC button was what had kept us on site for over 1hr+.

Damn it was our first time working with this inverter so we needed to get acquainted with the interface and set up.

In summary, we slept over and left the site on Sunday 8 am.
With the contractor heading back to warri while I stayed behind.

After sitting at home yawning and planning my trip to warri, I got a call from my contractor that he was going to visit Lagos and we needed to execute a project .

We took off Saturday 6th April at 10:00am.

He had procured the solar 1800wp(300*6) panels, batteries (2 tubular), 3kw must hybrid inverter and every item we needed for the project.

We got to site and started the installation. Roof was asbestos and the structure position was not very well strategic so we did a lot of + and -.

Finally we started the job, I entered the roof and was very sceptical about the rigidity.
I was finding it difficult to nail self( I needed a 6" nail where I wan see am for Idowu egba😩)

We changed the pattern of installation and laid it flat on the roof while using copper wire to secure them.

It was in this process local man almost fell🙂. You know that proverbs that says them no dey use 2 legs test if water deep.
Na this roof them dey talk about.

I took a testing step and broke the roof.we discovered later that the wood there has decayed.

Now if you are an installer,I will advise you to inspect the roofing before you work on it.

I conquered the installation with no injury even after the accident.

Please I have a quick question and I'm trying to make plans for it in the future.

what capacity and solar system will be suitable for the following appliances to run 24/7 ?

Charging of phones (4) = 60w
1 laptops = 45w
5 boobs = 39w
42 inches TV = 65w
2 standing fans = 20w

Everything= 229w approximately 250w

1kwp of solar
200ah battery lead battery or 100ah lithium battery
1kva inverter

Modification

I just saw you said 24hrs.
24v is Better @okusbaba quote is valid.

You will need 6pcs of solar panels.
The quotation will give you back up time of 13hrs

There is this gennex inverter that I worked on that couldn't supply output until you supply input and turn it off before it supplies output.

Mind you if you put on PV it will be own but no output, put off the PV input and on the inverter while connected to battery, it will come on and go off after some time....

He actually started it will lead acid battery? I was trying to imagine the space occupied. I admire his zeal.
To recoup his capital on the investment with time will depend on the type of products/accessories he used for the installation.
People that used Deye/Victron inverter with Deye lithium battery and Jinko/Canadian/Longi pv and other expensive accessories would have more time to wait while people that go for an average cost installation will recoup the capital early.

It's on this thread deye and big names are been mentioned. Yes you will recoup investment faster if you go cheap

Man just needs a simple inverter that can be fixed easily and fast.
He has about 3 inverters 10 and 5kva. Then a 12kva redundant inverter. All linked together in case the the 2 active inverters has issues the redundant system picks the load.

He designed the system from scratch from the Meters to Inverter that's just what I love about the whole system
