Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was today (January 14th) honored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. He was awarded with the Presidential Award in recognition of his leadership in advancing human rights, social justice and the fight for universal freedom. The SCLC, founded by the late American Civil Right leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, in January 1957 is currently led by Dr. Charles Steele Jr. The event is part of the activities leading up to the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day on Monday, January 18th, 2016. Former President Jonathan is the first African leader to be so honored. Dr. Jonathan also received Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's sister, Naomi King during the event. Before his remarks at the event, Dr. Jonathan met privately with the president of the SCLC. The president of the SCLC, Dr. Charles Steele Jr proposed to work with the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation to advance the cause of peace around the world and to bridge the gap between people of color in the Diaspora and Africa. Former President Jonathan responded that his vision is to help stabilize and promote democracy and peace in Africa. He went on to say that without peace you can not have economic progress. He revealed that this was the reason he pushed for Nigeria's intervention to ensure peace in various African nations such as Côte d'Ivoire while he was in office. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and President Steele then agreed to collaborate along the lines suggested by the former Nigerian President. At the event, former President Jonathan expressed his gratitude to the SCLC for inviting him and declared that it was "virtually impossible to separate this worthy body from its founder, the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, or from epoch making landmark events of the American Civil Rights movement". He also said "My personal takeaway from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, is service to God and the brotherhood and equality of all men before their Creator. In keeping with that, I have learnt not to look up to any man, except he is taller than I, or to look down on a fellow mortal, except I am admiring his shoes". Former President Goodluck Jonathan is the Chairman of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation and is in Atlanta, Georgia, on the invitation of a number of US institutions. Below are his full remarks at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Remarks by His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Atlanta, on Thursday 14th, January, 2016. Protocols I thank the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, for inviting and honoring me today, and especially so, as this invitation comes right about the period when the world stands still in recognition of the selfless sacrifice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When we think of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), it is virtually impossible to separate this worthy body from its founder, the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, or from epoch making landmark events of the American Civil Rights movement. I am pleased to know that the Southern Christian Leadership Conference is not just one of the great American institutions, it is also one of her more potent vehicles for the advancement of liberty and freedom for all God's people. For that, I also commend Charles Steele for his leadership and commitment to peace and justice nationally and globally. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's principles of non violent protests played a great part in the independence movement in my native country Nigeria and indeed throughout Africa as a whole. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr witnessed the British Union Jack being lowered in Ghana in 1957 when Ghana became the first Sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence, an action which set off a positive chain reaction all over the continent. In 1963, Ambassador Leslie O. Harriman, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who prosecuted our anti apartheid strategy at the UN, testified of the support he received from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in kick starting that noble effort. Suffice to say that the efforts of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in advancing Liberty and equal rights transcended national boundaries. Speaking for my foundation, the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, I must say that I have been inspired by this great man and the worthy institutions and legacies he left behind and I am further inspired to continuing doing good and advancing human freedoms just by being present here today. My personal takeaway from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, is service to God and the brotherhood and equality of all men before their Creator. In keeping with that, I have learnt not to look up to any man, except he is taller than I, or to look down on a fellow mortal, except I am admiring his shoes. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously said: "Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice. Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love". Those words helped me deliver on my stated promise to deepen democracy in Nigeria and in the process demonstrate through action that nobody's political ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. Once again, I thank the Southern Christian Leadership Conference for having me. May God bless you and continue to raise up from among you men and women who will continue in the footsteps of your worthy forebears. It's Unfortunate that while hard-working Nigerians are trying to hard to make ends meet in these difficult times that some unscrupulous Nigerians continue to paint our country and it's citizens in very bad light. Daily all manner of Scammers send different mails as they "fish" for unsuspecting citizens, unfortunately most times their victims are senior citizens and some pensioneers. I have taken it upon myself to expose every scheme they come up with the last time it was BVN, Next it was CSCS account, account suspension and Update the list is endless. This is how these blood sucking Leeches intend to defraud us next ( see screen shots below) NB: it is the duty of every Young Nigerian to educate elderly folks whose grasp of Information Technology is limited on how to detect a Scam God Bless You as you do IJN! Excepts From The Unseen Terrorist An exposé Published by Author House UK. As entertainment and hospitality business becomes completely sexualized and the quest for cloud nine via narcotics continues to land promising young men and women on ground zero, it has become imperative to share these real life stories of young people whose destinies were short circuited by a terrorist we have refused to recognise ! HUNTING FOR PEDOPHILES Mrs. Winifred left for the shopping mall, beaming with smiles, the mall had just taken delivery of new stocks, and among them was an Italian leather handbag she had coveted for a long time. She had been saving for long in the hope of buying the high quality handbag to match her new status as an assistant manager at a drug manufacturing firm. Upon receiving the news of the new arrivals from a friend, she dashed to the nearest automated teller machine to make withdrawals and hastily boarded a taxi heading for the mall. Her joy knew no bounds as she picked the bag, strolling majestically towards the counter where she paid for the bag and joyfully headed home to share the news with her husband who was on a weeklong sick leave. As she opened the door, the sight of her husband sexually abusing their one year old daughter was more than she could take, she suddenly collapsed on the floor smashing her head on a glass stool as she made her way down. Rushed to a nearby hospital, she was resuscitated but waking up to the reality that she has been married to a beast for ten years. Over the years, as I recall these episodes, my heart bleeds. As a guide who works closely with children and young people it grieves my heart to see the pain our society continues to inflict on the vulnerable and defenceless. The media is flooded with horrific stories and images of the continuous violation and molestation of our children from fathers who destroy their babies to randy Priests who defile the temple, our environment is completely ensnared The media itself is not left out of this onslaught against our children. The increased sexualization and eroticalization of our kids by the media has been identified as a major contributing factor to the way girls view sexuality. The promotion of appearance and physical attractiveness as key values by the media has also been implicated as one of the leading cause of eating disorders, depression and low self esteem among young people. To the few who survived these brutal onslaught, the scars as well as the emotional and psychological trauma remain and continue to torment them destroying their self esteem, and changing their view and perception of society as they journey through life. It is therefore imperative to canvass for legislations that are stiff enough to serve as a nightmare for pedophiles and would be child molesters. According to the FBI, 61 percent of rape victims are under 18 and 29 percent are younger than 11 yet only 1 out of every 10 child sexual abuse is reported to law enforcement agents. The lack of stringent laws and the inefficient prosecution of perpetrators have made it increasingly difficult for victims and their families to get the justice they deserve. In the absence of a global tracking system to effectively track pedophiles and checkmate their activities, the door will continue to remain open to these group of people who sneak into Facebook, connect with us on Twitter and show the world how they violated and infected our children on YouTube. Excerpt 2: THE EVIL CLAN When lab results showed that Emeka was infected with the HIV virus, members of his immediate family strategized on how to take care of him. After series of meetings and consultations, they came to the “brilliant” conclusion that keeping the information secret was in the best interest of the clan. Secondly, they decided to find a suitable bride, who would take care of him when he becomes weaker and unable to do most things by himself, since the demand of their business will not permit them to do so. Ezinne, the daughter of Mazi Ikenna, a poor farmer from the neighboring village of Ogbeotu was picked for the assignment. Unknown to Ezinne and members of her family, they were being lured into a scheme that would have lethal consequences. Several months after the wedding, Emeka began to show physical signs of the disease and was admitted for few weeks at a local hospital. Ezinne who was already seven months pregnant by this time was always at his bed side taking care of his needs to the “delight” of his family members. As his health deteriorated, Ezinne had to virtually do everything for her husband as he could neither speak nor stand without support. He eventually died on the 5th of September exactly 18 months after the wedding and was hastily buried by his family. Two months later when Ezinne his wife put to bed, none of her husband’s relatives showed up to rejoice with her on the birth of her daughter. As the widow settled down to raise her daughter, her husband’s relatives sold the only house her husband left and shared the money among themselves leaving her and her little child with no shelter. Forced to relocate to her father’s house, Ezinne, whose health was already failing struggled to take care of her daughter who was also HIV positive. With frequent hospital visits and mounting medical bills draining the family’s finances, her father started asking questions. He was later to discover the grand set up that transformed Ezinne his daughter into a guinea pig for Emeka’s family. However, being financially handicapped to seek judicial redress, he sold as much farm produce as he could to pay the medical bills of his daughter’s and her child. As Ezinne narrated her ordeal to me on her hospital bed, tears rolled down her eyes as she clutched a picture of her dead child to her chest. As I left her ward that evening, I wondered how many innocent young brides would have to die before the authorities take action. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has drawn the attention of Nigerians to the ‘harmful consequences’ of the unabated negative statements from the very father of the nation, President Muhammadu Buhari, on the economy and the general image of the country. The party said “it is worrisome that in the last six months, the President, instead of making efforts to harness resources and grow the economy, has rather continued to apply himself, perhaps unwittingly, to demarketing the nation and scaring away investors through negative labelling of Nigerians and unwarranted unhealthy portrayal of the nation’s economy”. The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, on Sunday said the President’s unwary statements have become very serious clog in the wheel of progress, eroding the confidence of both domestic and international investors in the Nigerian economic and social system. “In the last six months, our President has only succeeded in discouraging foreign investors with his continued misrepresentation of our country as a business unfriendly environment, where most of the citizens are basically corrupt, dishonest, and cannot be trusted. “Whereas we have restated our total support for the war against corruption, we insist that Mr. President’s unceasing blanket negative labelling of citizens, in a country where millions of honest and hardworking individuals/firms are genuinely contributing daily to the development effort, is indeed a disservice and injurious to the nation and the people. “Furthermore, Mr. President’s recent announcement to the world that the nation, with its abundant human and natural resources, is broke and cannot pay cabinet ministers not only sends a discouraging signal to the domestic and international business community, but also exposes the ineptitude of the present administration to meaningfully and sincerely exert itself and work with industrious and innovative investors to create and manage wealth. “We ask; how can any reasonable investor still have the confidence to invest in a country where the President himself continues to alert that his country reeks of corrupt people and that the government is broke to the extent it cannot pay cabinet ministers? “Is the President not directly advising investors against having confidence in Nigeria and the system, and that they risk not being paid for jobs awarded by government at any level? “More worrisome is the fact that Mr. President most times, makes his damaging comments in international fora with potential investors in attendance to the extent that reminds one of the proverbial father who, in the presence of potential suitors, often portrays his daughters as wayward and yet constantly complain of their inability to find husbands. “Indeed, this is not the way to go, Nigeria is a country blessed with abundant human and natural resources. What we need at the moment is a serious, innovative and practical approach with the capacity to harness the resources and create wealth for the benefit of all, instead of an apparently laidback scapegoat tactics with outworn excuses and unhelpful comments. “May we remind Mr. President that even in the darkest period of our economic challenges, successive administrations made efforts in steadying the economy, while always reassuring our citizens and the international community of the strength and economic potentials of our great nation. “We know that in the desperation to cover its apparent lack of economic plan, this administration has positioned cabinet ministers, upon inauguration to concentrate on diversionary blame game on the past PDP administration. But even this political deceit cannot combat the unpalatable consequences of Mr. President’s damaging utterances on the image of the nation and its economy. “Finally, we wish to remind the President and those around him that Nigerians, by the 2015 elections, have committed the fate of the country in his hands for the next four years and are not willing to accept excuses for any economic failures under his watch,” the party said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/192480-buharis-statements-de-marketing-nigeria-pdp-says.html |

ABUJA – A coalition of over 60 Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, in Nigeria, yesterday, decried what they termed “steady and continuous decline of the Nigerian economy” under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari. The groups, at a strategy meeting they held in Abuja yesterday under the aegis of Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, said there was urgent need for President Buhari to evolve a sustainable economic plan that will attract foreign investors into the country. The leader of the coalition and Executive Director of Policy and Legal Advocacy Center, PLAC, Mr. Clement Nwankwo, in his opening remarks, said the “dwindling economic fortunes of Nigeria” could be a function of the inability of President Buhari to appoint his Ministers six months after he assumed office. He said: “The major challenge we are currently facing is that we cannot see the urgency of this administration to improve the situation. It was unfortunate that after the six months that it took to come up with list of proposed Ministers, those we saw are those that have always been around the hood. “Why it took so long to forward their names to the National Assembly is quite a puzzle to us. “Why Ministers who have been cleared have not been sworn in is also a puzzle to us. We are almost in the first week of November. The laws are clear that government should have submitted its budget projections for 2016 by now. “We would have thought that Ministers would have been around to help finalise budget for presentation to the National Assembly. “Everyday we hear on social media that some people have returned money they stole from the treasury. The government should do well by telling us who they are, the amount returned and since the money is unanticipated, we should be told what it will be used for. “So much information and misinformation is a major worry for us. We are desperately concerned to see the government begin to function”. Nwankwo also faulted the current foreign exchange regime operating in the country, saying, “person who is attune with modern day economics cannot recommend such”. According to him, “We want to see change reflect in proper understanding of the Nigerian economy”. Likewise, the Chief Executive Officer of Economic Associates, Dr. Ayo Teriba, in a paper entitled ‘Towards a Policy Framework For Economic Inclusion in Nigeria”, noted that President Buhari inherited so many economic problems from the past administration. He however maintained that “this regime should do quick, wake up and address the problems”. He said: “Using six months just to share portfolios is not how to go about it. Currently, there is fiscal disconnect. The revenue of the government has declined, relative to the Gross Domestic Product. “Nigeria has the highest economy, yet the lowest revenue. The revenue has steadily declined. The revenue to GDP in 2014 was 11%, while 25% is what non oil producing economies like South Africa, Egypt and Morocco, have. Other countries like Angola and Algeria that have oil, have higher revenue level of 33%. “Nigeria should have about 40% like it use to have in 2004. The reason for the decline is not that revenue are not collected, but the leak-out from government processes, e.g, crude oil theft, subsidy fraud, wide spread abuse of administration of import duty and tax waivers, abuses by autonomous income revenue collecting agencies that spend what they collect as they wish, only remitting about 80% to the Federal Government. “There is also the issue of sectorial and regional exclusion. We currently have one of the worst unemployment rate in Africa. Our economy today compared to 1960 is weaker. Nigeria needs an orderly plan to raise revenue. There is need for this administration to not only stop the leakages, but to also institute periodic watch on impact of fiscal reforms on revenue inflows. “The new regime should have told us the situation they met at least by May, and what has changed within the first quarter since it took over. It should tell us if there is no more crude oil theft. “Currently Nigeria has not been attracting foreign investment, we urge this administration to make the economy more attractive. Steady currency regime is required to spur growth”, he added. Aside PLAC, other members of the Situation Room that met in Abuja yesterday included CLEEN Foundation, Action Aid Nigeria, Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Enough is Enough Nigeria, Wangonet, Partners for Electoral Reform, JDPC and Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth & Advancement (YIAGA), CWAE. Others are Development Dynamics,Human Rights Monitor, Election Monitor, Reclaim Naija, Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Centre LSD, CITAD, Stakeholder Democracy Network (SDN), CISLAC, WREP and Proactive Gender Initiative, among others. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/nigeria-economy-collapsing-gradually-csos-tell-buhari/?

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - Jimmy Morales, a former TV comedian who has never held office, swept to power in Guatemala's presidential election on Sunday after milking public anger over a corruption scandal that deepened distrust of the country's political establishment. The 46-year-old Morales overwhelmingly beat center-left rival and former first lady Sandra Torres in a run-off vote despite his lack of government experience and some policy ideas that strike many as eccentric. The headquarters of Morales' center-right National Convergence Front (FCN) party erupted in celebration as official returns showed he had around 68 percent support in a landslide victory. Voters pointed to widespread discontent with Guatemala's political class, compounded by a U.N.-backed investigation into a multi-million dollar customs racket that led last month to the resignation and arrest of former president Otto Perez. "As president I received a mandate, and the mandate of the people of Guatemala is to fight against the corruption that is consuming us," Morales said on Sunday night. The U.S. government has strongly supported the U.N.-backed investigators and their success has helped push against corruption in Central America, where economic hardship and gang violence spurred an exodus of migrants to the United States. However, the anti-graft fervor has also led to the election of an unknown quantity in Guatemala. It is unclear how Morales will tackle gang violence or try to stem the flow of U.S.-bound migrants. Morales was already a household name following a 14-year stint on a popular TV comedy and the self-proclaimed centrist from a humble background wooed voters with promises to tackle corruption and hand out millions of smartphones to children. "We were tired of the same faces of people who get rich off our money," said Eduardo Tablas, a maintenance man who voted for Morales. "He knows that if he does something corrupt, all of Guatemala will be demanding that he resign." http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN0SJ04G20151026
