omohayek: This kind of news shows how important it is for a government to depend on taxation in order to force citizens to hold it accountable. If Lagos were just another "federal allocation" state, how many residents would really care how the money was being spent, just as long as their "kinsmen" were getting the opportunity to "chop"? I agree with you, but I don't think most Nigerians will generally agree with you that government ought to depend on taxation. As far as they are concerned, Lagos IGR is already more than enough to turn the state into a Dubai replica. To many, Lagosians are already 'overtaxed'; even though according to the government, only 700,000 of the state's residents actually pay taxes (out of 8-million taxable adults). Little wonder why most states have abysmally low IGR basically coz the state governors are just too scared to tax their people, so they're left with the option of taking out huge loans to execute a few projects here-and-there so their people won't say they're not 'working'. But at the end of the day, the allocation they receive from the centre can barely pay the interests on the loans, let alone pay the salaries of an over-bloated civil service that they're too afraid to trim down due to political backlash. Like you rightly said, only those that pay their taxes have a right to hold the government accountable. But first, people need to appreciate the fact that government depends on taxes to adequately perform its functions. That part is where I think our folks still need a lot of reorientation coz most don't think so -- they assume that Oil money [a.k.a federal allocation] or loans should be more than enough. |

Once you take this away. Especially Sea port, everyone will go their way. Igbos are big importers and Lagos just sits there and benefits. The place is now so congested that it is now a curse. The arrogance is all tied to this belief you can't do without Lagos. Abeg, regions need some level of autonomy. Why have all that coastal area in the east and south south and yet we can't use it. Proudlyngwa: Biased analysis. Learn to paraphrase.
First you started with a question and diverted into something different. A state like lagos is very expensive to maintain and with limited resources, can only generate funds through adequate taxation, having put in place certain infrastructure.
Upcoming states can decide to give tax windows, except to certain type of ventures it is deciding to draw or maintain in the state Lagos does not need to do that. Exactly. The fact remains that Lagos is not for everybody. While I think the LUC increase is excessive, and would most likely be reviewed downwards, I also think some people are trying to politicize the matter. Like you rightly said, other states will decide their own tax rates to stay competitive. Ogun for instance is currently benefiting from a competitve advantage and proximity to the same Lagos (a natural development that was bound to occur due to the land limitations of Lagos) and you don't see Lagos state government whining about that, yet some people would prefer the state to get combative over this and see this as a threat of sorts. Again I repeat, Lagos is not for everybody. |

ENUGU made history on Wednesday, as the only Nigerian city among thirty five cities from across the globe invited to join the 100 Resilient Cities Network (100RC) pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation, New York.
The announcement was made during The Rockefeller Foundation’s Urban Resilience Summit in Singapore. The other three African cities that made the list alongside the Coal City of Enugu are Kigali (Rwanda), Accra (Ghana) and Arusha (Tanzania)...

Listen up, Enugu APPLIED to the Rockerfeller foundation to be included as a 'resilient city'. They met the foundation's criteria and were listed among that year's list. It's an annual program sponsored by the Rockerfellar foundation. Lagos also applied not long ago as well and got accepted as a 'resilient city'. pazienza: I think this your argument has become circular, and currently leading to repetition of points I had already tackled.
Lagos is self sustaining today, Yes! All thanks to the perks it enjoyed as the colonial administrative quarters and FCT. Abuja could yet become self sustaining tomorrow.
Ibadan is not ranked by resident city international. Either way, it's just a modest town. And we know why.
As it was to the rest of Lagos state, benefiting from proximity to the seat of power in island, so it's becoming for Ogun.
We had all elucidated on this before.
This argument, I'm afraid had run its full course. You have no new compelling points to offer.

Cooly100: Liar...
See...the below...and try an travel more...
"...During the 60s and 70s when u mention Port harcourt and Enugu in East, mention Kano and kaduna in North, then u must mention Lagos and Ibadan in west. Lagos was the capital of Nigeria while Ibadan was the largest city in West Africa. We were a very suffisticated people then. We never had much brown roofs. We had largest professors. we also had other cities such as Abeokuta etc but now table has turned on us, ibadan is the biggest slum in the whole of Africa (if not the world) with many dirty buildings without toilets. The brown roofs are enough to make you throw up.
Abeokuta has declined from a city to a small town with slums. Other state capitals in west are mere villages like, osogbo and ado ekiti and akure. (I'd have icluded ilorin but since it has an emir as the traditional ruler, it is now owned by northerners). Here in osogbo the best hotel looks like a guest house
Coming to east, you now have many cities, including ones which were not developed in 60s. They have booming cities like Enugu, Owerri, Onitsha, Aba, Nnewi, Awka , Umuahia. If u go to awka umuahia and owerri, u see modern buildings without brown roofs, u see fine hotels, shoping malls and fly-overs under construction. If u also go to other ibo cities outside southeast such as Asaba and Porthharcourt u see the same development..." Oni Guy, you need to quit fooling yourself with that stupid quote you keep throwing around from your so-called 'Oni' (his real handle is 'Ooni') coz that your 'Oni' is none other than a well-known Igbo troll that uses that moniker to fool his fellow ipod touts (obviously it's working else you won't be here quoting such nonsense). pazienza: The story of Abuja thumping traditional Northern commercial centres like Kaduna and Kano in economic importance today, courtesy of the international exposure and fund flow afforded by the FCT title would continue to speak against purveyors of propaganda like you.
Vestiges of its FCT status, like International airport, monopoly on seaport, hosting of many multinational corporations, and foreign embassies, including infrastructures like 3rd mainland bridge, provided Lagos with a solid foundation that made it a self sustaining entity it is today. It has nothing to do with Yorubas.
The capital of Western Region was Ibadan, and it's not looking that impressive. Are you daft?? Who is arguing with you about Abuja and the perks it currently enjoys as an FCT?? We are TALKING ABOUT LAGOS, dumbo! Lagos is a SELF-SUSTAINING STATE TODAY! Abuja IS NOT. Your argument would only carry much weight if FG accords the same perks and subsidized development to Lagos as it does Abuja. Even as we speak, Abuja is relatively enjoying less development under this administration than it did under GEJ, why? Because its allocation/subsidized development from the FG has reduced drastically owing to the slump in oil prices!! But the same cannot be said about Lagos coz Lagos does NOT depend on FG money. #FACT! I know your type. If Lagos administrators had allowed the state to continue to retrogress and decay, your likes would have changed the narrative to something like, 'well, those Yoruba people cannot even manage Lagos without the FG'. And speaking of Ibadan, the city may not be on par with Lagos (it can certainly do wayyy much better than it is currently doing with a more aggressive leadership coz it has everything it needs to match Lagos, that is our thinking in the SW coz we don't hinge our development on Oil money, FCT status, or SeaPorts like y'all obsess over) but it has witnessed more robust development that your entire enclave. This goes beyond throwing derisive brown-roof invectives/expletives, guy. https://s1.postimg.org/8dc5ztwd1r/afrimarkets.png https://s4.postimg.org/osi6p7fod/euro.png I have told you how badly Lagos was doing after the FCT was shifted to Abuja, and how the state was re-invented as a result of its focused, visionary, and quality leadership. Unfortunately, you people put so much faith in Oil money/rent-seeking and 'Federal presence' as requisites for development, but sorry we SWesterners don't share that worldview coz if we did, today we'd be making excuses while Lagos would've continued denegerating rather than find creative means of arresting its decay. But as you can see, even Ogun is stepping up, while the likes of Oyo and Osun are also following suit. |

pazienza: Not according to me.
It's according to available stats.
Abuja of yesterday, courtesy of FCT title and the FG investments and international exposure that comes with it, is currently dusting traditional Northern commercial centres like Kano and Kaduna in all aspects of finance, development and economics.
Perhaps, tommorow, Gwari people would tell us how Abuja had always been blessed and progressive and only got a head start, which the all intelligent super human Gwari race maximized and nurtured. The story would as always be tailored to play down the role playing the FCT had on Abuja development. Na so. You people are fond of appropriating ready-made successes. Lagos ceased from being FCT as far back as 1991 and things only went DOWNHILL since then! The attention of the FG shifted to Abuja and Lagos suffered BIG TIME! Even today, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa and Akwa IBom get more Federal allocation than Lagos. But with the coming of the fourth republic in 1999 Tinubu's administration set out to make the state self-sustaining. It's annual IGR has since increased from N11-billion in '99 to over N400-billion today! That didn't happen because it was a former FCT, NO. It happened because of the concerted efforts of its leadership since that time. The state has since witnessed unprecedented infrastructural development as a result of its LEADERSHIP. That is the TRUE STORY of the success of the Lagos of today. Had it not been for the leadership, the state would have continued to decay at the expense of Abuja's own development, but its administrators since '99 arrested that decay and made it into what it is today. No amount of fact-twisting to the contrary by you and your ilk will change that salient fact. |

pazienza: Lagos and Abuja exploding population have to be fed, common sense dictates that investors would naturally seek for cheaper farmlands in the immediate neighbouring states to service those two centres. Like wise industrialists. Land is cheaper in surrounding states to those centres.
The huge and massive inflow of funds into Abuja and Lagos as FCT would mean that the money have to be banked, and not stashed at home, hence Banking dominance. Let us hope the country is restructured along regional lines (or disintegrates) that way every region will have its own FCT (since according to you FCT status is responsible for the significant inflows). Hopefully then you people will finally quit blaming Yoruba people for all your problems. |

omohayek: You've long been notorious on these forums for your extreme ethnocentrism and runaway inferiority complex, and usually I wouldn't bother to even read - let alone respond - to the hate-inflected drivel you're prone to spitting out, but this time I'll make an exception: the Lagos you spend so much time obsessing over was already by far the wealthiest part of the country before Nigeria even existed as a single country, which in turn was well before the British and their accompanying missionaries had made significant inroads into your part of the south-east.
All this self-congratulatory rubbish you've written here cannot gainsay the fact that Lagos was by the 1880s so valuable to the British that it was to protect its trade with the south-western interior that they even bothered to create a colony of "Southern Nigeria" in the first place. Igbo mass migration to Lagos only began in the 1920s, many decades after it had become a flourishing city of trade, education and industry, so even in that respect you and your ilk reverse cause and effect - it was the already extant prosperity of the city that drew - and continues to draw - Igbos to it, rather than any particular contributions of theirs setting it apart. As for the idea that SS (not SE) oil money "developed" Lagos, one would have to be ignorant enough to think the place was "undeveloped" until 1970 to swallow such manifest nonsense - but here you and your bandwagon of ignoramuses clearly qualify.
The notion that funds from the much poorer northern and south-eastern parts of Nigeria ever played a meaningful role in "developing" a place which had always been worth more than the rest of the country is rubbish from start to finish, cooked up in the ignorant brains of people whose inferiority complexes cannot allow them to absorb indisputable facts that are trivial to confirm with a simple Google search or two. Or you might even consult a professional history of Nigeria or two, such as the ones by Richard Bourne or Toyin Falola; but who am I kidding? The desire to seek out objective knowledge is totally foreign to the likes of tribal chest-beaters like you, who would rather believe and propagate nonsensical lies that happen to bolster their fragile sense of self-worth.
