By simple logic, who stood chance of getting to Bonny and Opobo first?

Captain Adams himself admitted that his opinion of the natives of Bonny was probable (not certain or definate). the native language of Bonny is ibani but people speak ibos predominantly because of trade. you can easily mistaken the natives as ibos. The reason it is considered as Ijawland is because the earliest settlers were Ijaw while Igbos populated it in bulk later either as traders, slaves, mercenaries or acculturated slaves. In answer to the bolded Igbos were always the better traders whether with Europeans or with fellow Africans and yes fishing is a predominant occupation among various Igbo groups especially the ones living near large water bodies.

The kings of Bonny and Opobo bear the ijaw title of Amayanabo. Jaja of Opobo was an ibo slave purchased by ijaw merchants to work as a slave. The nickname Jaja was an ijaw name given to him to embrace him into the royal house. Ibos were captured from the hinterlands and sold as slaves in Bonny, many would then settle after abolishment of slave trade while others migrated to present day bonny.

This is why i warn that Ndigbo should be wary sharing the same country wth three ethnicities in particular, because it has become apparent over the years that these groups stated aim is to undermine Igbo territorial, economic and political interests in 'one Nigeria'! Bonny people claim an Igbo decent even in 1850s from the page of the book you attached written by the Europeans. I am not from rivers state but my mother born eighty years ago in Opobo spoke Igbo as her first language. She's not Igbo by the way.

I watched a documentary about opobo but they are heavily of Igbo stock.
