Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has refused to apologise for his handball against Ghana in the 2010 World Cup.

Suarez was sent off in the last minute of extra time in the quarter-final for denying the Black Stars a goal with a deliberate handball on the goalline.

Asamoah Gyan missed the subsequent penalty and Uruguay went through.

"The Ghana player missed the penalty, not me," said Suarez before the teams meet in a decisive Group G match on Friday in this year's World Cup finals.

Ghana play Uruguay knowing a win would send them into the knockout stage - but a defeat would see the South American side progress if South Korea fail to beat Portugal.

If Uruguay and South Korea both win, goal difference - and possibly goals scored - would decide their fate, with the Asian side holding a one-goal advantage.

It is the first time the countries have met since the game 12 years ago, and former Liverpool striker Suarez was unrepentant despite being told by a Ghanaian journalist that some in the African country view him as "the devil himself".

"I don't apologise for it," he said. "I apologise if I injure a player but I took a red card for the handball.

"It wasn't my fault because I didn't miss the penalty."

His actions in 2010 sparked outrage in Ghana, partly as a result of his exuberant celebrations on the touchline as Uruguay won on penalties. Suarez's side were then beaten in the last four by the Netherlands.

The current Ghana squad have however sought to play down talk of revenge against Suarez and Uruguay, with captain Andre Ayew - the only remaining player from the 2010 squad - saying he wants to move on.

A gay man who was living in Qatar has claimed he was lured to an hotel room where he was gang-raped by law enforcement officers.

“Ali,” who is from the Philippines but was working as an office assistant in Qatar, told how in 2018 he had received a message on a gay dating app from another man, who said he was a Turkish worker.

The man had offered him a substantial sum of money to come to his hotel room.

Ali decided to go, but when he arrived at the 10th-floor room, he was confronted by six men – who identified themselves as Qatari police.

Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar – usually carrying a penalty of three years in jail, although technically the death penalty can be imposed in some cases.

“I really wanted to jump [out of] the window,” he told the i, “but I can’t, it’s too high and I’m already cornered inside the room.

“They catch me and threw me on the bed. They started to rape me.”

As soon as one policeman had finished assaulting him, he says, another started. “All of them except the Turkish one, he added,” “he watched until they finished. He was laughing at me.”

He says the Qataris then searched his bag, and accused him of being a prostitute. He says he considered jumping out of the window because he was so scared of what the men would do next.

Another gay man arrived during Ali’s ordeal, also lured into the trap. The two were taken to a police station where they were fined 300 Qatari Rial (around £74).

“I slept in the jail for one night and when I woke up, they took me to the deportation centre,” Ali said. “There I waited for two days to receive my passport and ticket to go back to the Philippines. They cancelled all my papers.”

Several other gay men say they have have been "hunted" in the same way by Qatari police.

Nasser Al Khater, CEO of the FIFA World Cup 2022, insisted to CNN that “everyone is welcome,” in Qatar.

“Public display of affection is frowned upon and that goes across the board,” he said. “Qatar is a modest country. That’s all that needs to be respected. Other than that, everyone is free to live their life.”

The foreign secretary, James Cleverly, has ordered gay football fans to “show respect” to Qatar’s culture when attending the World Cup, which kicks off on November 20.

The ball used by Diego Maradona to score two of the most famous goals in football history is to go on auction.

The match ball used in the famous 1986 World Cup quarter final between England and Argentina carries an estimated price of £2.5m to £3m.

It is being sold by Ali Bin Nasser, the Tunisian referee who allowed Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal during the game.

Bin Nasser said: "This ball is part of football history - it is the right time to be sharing it with the world."

The ball is being sold at auction on 16 November as part of a World Cup special event. It will be streamed live and prospective buyers can register their bids online from 28 October.

"The timing of the match, the history between the two teams and the handball have all led to this match going down as one of the most famous and emotive matches in football history," said Graham Budd, chairman of Graham Budd Auctions.

"With the history surrounding the ball, we are expecting this lot to be hugely popular when it comes up for auction."

Several items of sporting memorabilia have broken records at auctions recently. The shirt Maradona wore during the 1986 quarter final was sold in May for $9.3m (£7.4m), a new world record.

This was beaten just three months later when a Mickey Mantle baseball card sold for $12.6m (£10.3m) in August.

In September, Michael Jordan's 1998 NBA finals jersey sold for $10.1 (£8.7m), a new world record for any 'game worn' sporting memorabilia.

A female PE teacher was reportedly arrested last Thursday (September 15) and charged with second degree sexual assault as well as possessing a controlled substance.

Her bail was set at $50,000 (£44,000) and she was bonded out of jail on Saturday (September 17).

According to Gentry Police Department's probable cause affidavit obtained by the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Queen is alleged to have had sexual contact with a 17-year-old student in 2010. The incident has only just come to light.

The affidavit states the alleged victim claims the sexual contact began in the summer of that year, occurring in Queen's office and the office bathroom.

Police say they have "corroborated multiple details of the alleged victim's disclosure" from the student's parents, Queen's ex-husband and a former teacher.

The teacher reported seeing "disturbing behaviour" from Queen. Queen is also alleged to have had the student stay in a bed at the home she was living in.

Police have now launched an appeal asking for other potential victims to come forward.

Queen has not yet entered a plea.

Terrie DePoala, the Superintendent of Gentry Public Schools, said that Queen has been suspended from her job.

DePaola said in a message to parents: "Thank you for your concern regarding an incident with a teacher. We understand and are also concerned.

"At this time, we have no information regarding the incident(s) leading to the charges made. We are aware of no allegations that would impact our current students and families."

Queen was reportedly a respected teacher in the Gentry School District for over 20 years.

According to the Westside Eagle Observer, she won the 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year Award from the Arkansas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

A mother that doctors nicknamed "bleach mum" has been sentenced to death after poisoning children in return for social media donations.

Nattiwan Raakunjet was sentenced to death after being found guilty of poisoning her two children, killing one, in an attempt to solicit donations on social media for their medical treatment.

The woman had brought her four-year-old son to the hospital complaining of a stomach ache and vomiting blood, saying that it was a seafood allergy.

But doctors treating the youngster found that the boy was suffering from a severe stomach infection, not an allergic reaction as the mum had initially claimed.

Doctors found that the woman had actually been lacing his meals with corrosive substances for two years, discovering also that the woman's daughter, who died in 2019, had also been a victim of the poisonings.

Rakkunjet was sentenced to death after being found guilty of poisoning the youngsters and posting their pictures to social media as a way of soliciting public donations.

Medical experts at Thammasat University Hospital near Bangkok, Thailand, determined the two children had suffered from bleeding in the digestive tract, vomiting blood and stomach inflammation.

Prosecutors say that Rakkunjet had fed her four-year-old daughter food laced with mildly corrosive liquid since adopting the youngster in 2015.

The youngster tragically died in 2019, but a year later the mum had admitted her son to hospital with similar symptoms.

She was subsequently arrested in May 2020, with the boy placed into a shelter, and upon police investigation a total of 20 million baht (£47,339) was discovered across two of Rakkunjet's bank accounts.

Following her arrest, Nattiwan confessed to human trafficking by using her children to solicit donations, murder and attempted murder.

The court said that her confession was not a mitigating factor in her sentencing, and she was subsequently put to death, NPR reported.

A zookeeper miraculously dodged death after a 16-foot crocodile launched an attack on him in front of horrified tourists.

Crocodile handler Sean Le Clus was ferociously attacked while sitting on the back of the 660kg beast before a second one also targeted him.

The 68-year-old endured a terrifying bite from the female crocodile name July, followed by a Nile crocodile called Hannibal at the Crocodile Creek farm in the KwaZulu Natal province of South Africa.

The handler, who has cared for Hannibal for more than 30 years, had to wriggle and push himself out of the beast's five-inch long teeth, which sank into his thigh.

After twisting his body away, the croc hurled him onto the floor of the enclosure before he escaped on all fours on September 10.

Sean had just fed the female crocodile a chicken to keep her placated while he performed his “party trick” of sitting on Hannibal’s back for the crowd.

He calls the giant carnivore a “good boy” as he pats him just behind the head but does not notice the female called July suddenly arrowing towards him.

At the last moment, he pulls his leg out of the jaws of the female’s mouth and fends it off with a stick as he dismounts the huge male for safety.

But having taken his attention off Hannibal, the 103 stone predator sees his chance and whips his head round with its jaws wide open.

Sean, who has been bitten before by another crocodile and suffered a leg wound that left him limping for 11 months, leapt in a panic backwards.

He has said previously: ”If a croc gets a grip on you it is game over”.

Dozens of tourists screamed out in shock during the potentially lethal attack at the Crocodile Creek tourist attraction in South Africa.


The popular reptile park on the Utongati River flood plain just north of Durban is home to 6000 crocodiles and alligators and snakes.

A Crocodile Creek spokesman told The South African newspaper: “Sean had two big teeth holes in him but sewed them up himself and was back at work in 20 minutes.

"It was the first time Hannibal has bitten a handler and it happened because the female moved in on him and she can be very stroppy.

“Sean was watching the female and Hannibal just reminded him that he was there – if it was a proper bite then it would have been very bad.

The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, attended with his wife Brigitte.Mr Macron, who met the Queen three times, had said that she had been "a friend of France, a kind-hearted queen, who has left a lasting impression on her country and her century".

Other foreign heads of government who were there included Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, Israeli President Isaac Herzog and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Not invited
Representatives from Syria, Venezuela and Afghanistan have not been invited, reports the BBC's James Landale. This is because the UK does not have full diplomatic relations with these countries.

No-one from Russia, Belarus and Myanmar has been invited either.

Diplomatic relations between the UK and Russia have all but collapsed since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and a spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was "not considering" attending the funeral.

The invasion was launched partially from the territory of Belarus. And the UK has significantly scaled back its diplomatic presence in Myanmar since a military coup last year.

North Korea (DPRK) and Nicaragua have been invited to send only ambassadors, not heads of state.
