Crime / English Woman Nearly Bites Off Man's Joystick As He Tried To Rape Her by ogbiwa: 7:11am On Mar 25, 2022 |
A woman who tried to fight off a rapist by biting his penis has been commended for her "bravery and strength" after the intruder stormed into her home. The victim clenched her teeth onto the penis of Brian Brough as he forced her to conduct a sex act at the property in Salford, Greater Manchester. The 60-year-old was left suffering from multiple bone fractures to her face after she was repeatedly raped and beaten up late at night on March 19 last year. She managed to escape to a neighbour's house and was rushed to hospital with a fractured jaw, missing teeth, black eyes, a broken nose and internal injuries. It was reported that Brough, 36, gained access into her home after he knocked on her front door under the false pretence of being her neighbour's friend. Mark Kellet, prosecuting, described the ordeal and said: "Although she had never met the defendant before, as her neighbour's name matched what he said, she opened the door and he came into the house asking to use the toilet. "She went into the front room but was followed by the defendant and as she sat on the sofa he sat next to her and put his arm around her. "He told her that he was a male escort and took his penis out, saying: 'Look, this is what I do.' "She told him that she was not interested, but he grabbed her head and forced it onto his penis. "In response, she bit the defendant's penis which prompted him to hit her in the face." Mr Kellet went on to say that Brough grabbed the victim by her hair and "dragged" her into the bedroom - she recalls coming in and out of consciousness. It was reported that Brough fled the scene with two stolen Samsung phones, bank cards, a Fitbit, alcohol and more. The victim was taken to a rape crisis centre where medics identified a sample of Brough's DNA. He was later arrested at Wigan market. During his rape trial in November, Brough denied wrongdoing, turned down legal representation and refused to appear in court. Brough was jailed for 18 years with an extended licence period of four years at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester. He will have to serve a minimum of 12 years and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life. https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/woman-tried-bite-rapists-penis-26550318 1 Like

Celebrities / Pocah Lands In Hospital After Holding Her Farts In Front Of Boyfriend by ogbiwa: 9:00am On Mar 21, 2022 |
A Brazilian singer has admitted she was sent to hospital to be treated for trapped gas because she didn’t want to fart in front of her boyfriend. Viviane de Queiroz Pereira, who is also known as Pocah, shared snaps from her medical room with millions of online followers on Instagram. "I woke up at 5.30am with severe stomach pains and ended up in the hospital," the 27-year-old explained. "But that's it, guys. I'm now fine. Just an accumulation of trapped farts." The musician, who kicked off her career in 2012 as MC Pocahontas, went on to encourage her fans to pass wind freely. She said: “Girls, don't be ashamed to fart in front of your guy… "What's really embarrassing is not letting your guy sleep because you're in discomfort, going to hospital with your guy, and the diagnosis being trapped farts." "From now on, I'm letting them rip, guys." Pocah, who was born in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro and also has heritage from Africa and Portugal, originally ignored the stomach pains because of advice from a TikTok thread. But after the ordeal, she says she’ll be releasing gas freely. According to medics, holding in farts can be dangerous and lead to painful symptoms. NHS worker Dr Faraz explained on TikTok that the average person farts 20 times every day. He said: “Don’t hold in your farts. Gas forms naturally in your stomach as a waste product of digestion. "It gets mixed with air that you swallow when you eat and drink.” Explaining that holding it in can lead to heartburn and bloating, the medic warned the gas might even come out another way. “It could come out as a smelly burp or make your breath stink,” he added. “Imagine doing a burp that smells like a fart.” https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/world-news/woman-hospital-after-being-embarrassed-26514333 13 Likes 4 Shares

Foreign Affairs / Russia Created A Deepfake Video Of Zelensky Asking Ukrainian Troops To Surrender by ogbiwa: 8:15am On Mar 21, 2022 |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X17yrEV5sl4 I know the video is 3 days old but still shocking An amateurish deepfake video of Volodymyr Zelensky surrendering to Russia has been laughed off by experts. The clip shows the Ukrainian president speaking from his lectern as he calls on his troops to lay down their weapons and give in to Putin's invading forces. The deepfake has been widely circulated on Russian social media and was even planted by hackers on live TV on Ukraine and on a news site before it was taken down. Internet users immediately flagged the discrepancies between the skin tone on Zelenskiy's neck and face, the odd accent in the video, and the pixelation around his head. Ukraine 24, which was targeted by the trolls, said it was the work of 'enemy hackers'. While the clumsy misinformation attempt is unlikely to fool anyone, it has raised concerns about a new front in the information war. There are fears Russia could flood social media with similar videos hoping to discredit official information put out by Ukraine. Nina Schick, the author of Deepfakes, said the video looked like 'an absolutely terrible faceswap,' referring to programs that can digitally graft one person's face onto another's body. Two weeks ago, Ukraine's military intelligence agency put out a short video alerting the country to the danger of deepfakes, alleging that the Kremlin was preparing a stunt involving one. The Russian Embassy in Washington did not immediately return a message seeking comment. Schick called the fake Zelenskiy video 'very crude,' but warned that the it was a matter of time before the technology became more accessible. 'Expect fakes like this to become easier to produce while appearing highly authentic,' she said. Mounir Ibrahim, who works for Truepic, a company which roots out online deepfakes, told The Daily Beast: 'The fact that it's so poorly done is a bit of a head-scratcher. You can clearly see the difference — this is not the best deepfake we've seen, not even close.' 'As we start seeing more and more cheap fakes, deepfakes flood the zone, it's going to desensitise people and allow bad actors to allege, "Nothing is real on the ground, you can't trust anything".' Zelensky has responded to the fake video of himself, telling supporters: 'We are defending our land, our children, our families. So we don't plan to lay down any arms. Until our victory.' The move is part of the disinformation war, which has seen Russia conceal its casualties, claim Ukraine started the war and is committing atrocities against its own people. On Thursday, defence secretary Ben Wallace hit out at Russian 'dirty tricks' after he and Home Secretary Priti Patel were targeted by an impostor posing as the Ukrainian prime minister. The Defence Secretary spent 10 minutes on a Microsoft Teams call with a man claiming to be Oleksiy Honcharuk, who asked about British policy and eventually urged him to shout slogans. Mr Wallace, who revealed the deception in a Tweet, said he became suspicious and terminated the call after 'several misleading questions'. The move is part of the disinformation war, which has seen Russia conceal its casualties, claim Ukraine started the war and is committing atrocities against its own people. Mr Wallace, who revealed the deception in a Tweet, said he became suspicious and terminated the call after 'several misleading questions'. His admission was followed by a similar one by Ms Patel, who said she was targeted earlier this week. The level of sophistication involved in the hoax has convinced Government sources that it was a Russian plot. The video call was set up after an email, purportedly sent from an aide at the Ukrainian embassy, was sent to a government department and then forwarded to the Ministry of Defence. The call was set up and Mr Wallace was put through on Teams to the 'prime minister of Ukraine', posing with the country's flag behind him. The Times reported that Mr Wallace was asked about the chances of UK warships going to the Black sea and whether Ukraine should get nuclear weapons or join Nato. Senior Ministry of Defence sources fear Moscow may attempt to splice together Mr Wallace's comments in an attempt to embarrass him. He has ordered an immediate inquiry to find out how the impostor was able to speak to him. The Defence Secretary said it was a 'desperate attempt' but 'no amount of Russian disinformation, distortion and dirty tricks' could distract from the human rights abuses carried out during the invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin's forces. Sports / Tammy Abraham Enjoys Life In Rome With Glamorous Girlfriend by ogbiwa: 7:43am On Mar 19, 2022 |
Tammy Abraham was once again AS Roma's hero when his 90th-minute strike fired the Giallorossi into the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League. Abraham left boyhood Chelsea for the Italian capital last summer - to the tune of £35million. And the Englishman has quickly established himself as a star in the Serie A, earning himself the nickname 'The Gladiator'. And with the Stadio Olimpico chanting his name, Abraham is loving his new life in Italy as Roma's main talisman. Both Abraham and his girlfriend Leah Monroe have settled into the Italian way of life - and the locals have loved them for it. The couple were spotted touring the Colosseum - one of Rome's most famous spots from the Roman era. Abraham and Monroe are also spotted eating out on the town regularly, and they were seated next to some Roma fans one evening after crashing out of the Coppa Italia. After politely expressing their disappointment at the loss, Abraham paid their bill. While the striker also regularly posts snaps of the city on his Instagram story - one, showing a panoramic video of Rome, was captioned: "What a city!" However, the Romans have still joked that Abraham still has 'English ways' despite his last six months in Italy. Italian journalists were left bemused when the Englishman ordered a cappuccino at a bar in the city centre after eating an eggplant parmigiana for his dinner. Italians only drink cappuccinos before 11am. Abraham is part of a new wave of English talent that has looked to broaden their horizons beyond the Premier League. Jadon Sancho, after becoming disillusioned with game time at Manchester City, moved to Borussia Dortmund, where he was joined by Jude Bellingham. While Kieran Tripper spent time at Atletico Madrid before returning to England's top flight. And Abraham isn't the only Englishman at Roma, Chris Smalling and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are also in the Eternal City. While Abraham has been in red hot form for the Giallorossi, earning an England call-up in the process. It's Abraham's acceptance of Italian life, and attempts to earn the language, that has made Rome fall in love with the striker. https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/tammy-abraham-as-roma-italy-26504593 11 Likes

Crime / Mexican Cartel Dumps Body With 'Frightening' Joystick Message To Rivals by ogbiwa: 8:42am On Mar 18, 2022 |
A deadly drug cartel abandoned a dead body in a binbag with a twisted message to their enemies so they could "see how our d**k feels." The human remains were found in the early hours of Tuesday morning (March 17) at the side of the San José del Llano bridge in the city of Apaseo El Grande, Mexico. Images of the body show a bright green piece of cardboard with a message to the enemies of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel placed around the head of the body written across it. The translation of the message posted on Borderland Beat said: "You piece of sh*t b***h a** Jaliscas. This is so that you can see how our d**k feels here." "Come on out to that armed confrontation you murderers of innocent civilians. The state of Guanajuato is a territory that belongs to the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel." The news comes after experts claim that the brutal Jalisco New Generation Cartel has become a “greater force” than El Chapo’s criminal empire, and they are now sending threatening airborne messages. Citizens from Teocaltiche, Jalisco, a western Mexican state fringing the Pacific Ocean, reported that a plane dropped flyers with a message from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) last month. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), led by Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera Cervantes, a former ally of Chapo, operates in at least 35 states across Mexico and Puerto Rico. In July, authorities estimated the gang oversaw one-third of all drugs being transported from Mexico into the US. In their aerial letters, that went out to the entire civil society of Teocaltiche, nearby Villa Hidalgo and the authorities, they namecheck Mario González, an alleged operator for the Sinaloa Cartel. The letter reads: "You are hereby informed that this fight isn’t with you. But it is with the enemy that you have had among you for many years. Who have caused disappearances, extortions, and homicides in the region with the Sinaloa Cartel. "Made up of Mario González and his mob, in conjunction with some corrupt authorities that have made all their crimes go unpunished. "That is why the CJNG is cleaning up the region to eliminate all that scum that does so much damage to society, Mario González, along with all your scourges. Stop hiding behind the skirts of the government. Sincerely, CJNG." https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/world-news/deadly-cartel-dump-body-bag-26496948 1 Like 1 Share

Foreign Affairs / Rob O'Neill Mocks America's "Weak" Response To Putin by ogbiwa: 7:19am On Mar 15, 2022 |
A Navy SEAL who killed Osama Bin Laden says there's no way the US could do to Putin what he did to Bin Laden as he mocks his country's response to Russia's invasion. Rob O'Neill, from Montana, was a part of the SEAL Team Six that took out the 9/11 organiser in Abbottabad in 2010. He has completed 400 combat missions over 16 years and believes that Vladimir Putin has "lost his marbles" by launching the full-scale invasion against Ukraine. But he has also been taken aback by his country's reaction and says America has responded to the deadly attack with weakness. The veteran, who was decorated 52 times, slammed President Biden's administration after they cancelled a nuclear missile test last weekend while Russian troops attacked innocent citizens. O'Neill believes the Pentagon is more worried about their climate change agenda instead of trying to put a stop to Putin, reports Daily Mail. He said: "You don't defeat a crazy man with nuclear weapons, with weakness. It's like trying to stop a schoolyard bully by appeasing him, it's nonsense. "When I was in the service, the main concern was whether you could perform the task at hand. "Now they (the Pentagon) are wasting time and resources making warships green. "The unfortunate truth is Russia and China are laughing at us when we talk about climate change in the military." O'Neill confessed that he didn't believe Russia would invade Ukraine because he "made the mistake of trying to make sense of an insane man’s decision." He thought Putin planned to manipulate the West into paying out extra money on defences by stationing hundreds of thousands of soldiers on the border but didn't believe they would send anyone in. The veteran fears that the Russian leader will move to heavy, long-range artillery after watching the Ukrainian resistance take down helicopters and jets. He hopes Russia will reach a point where their troops are "getting their butts kicked so badly" that the West and Ukraine will discuss a deal with Moscow as a way out. "Most people in the world can agree. There's one person that can stop this. All he needs to do is stop it," O'Neil added. He says he has found it unsettling to see footage of Russian helicopters getting attacked and being shared across social media. "There are Russians on those planes and I've had friends dying in helicopter crashes, and there's nothing cool about it. "Most of the soldiers don’t want to be there. It’s all because one guy in the Kremlin has lost his mind." O'Neill claims that most Americans are getting their ideas of war from TV and social media. "We'd have to know where he is and hit him with an airstrike. You would have to figure out how we get into Russia, how they don't see us and what we do when we land," he added. "Leave your video game tactics at home, because they don't work." https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/world-news/navy-seal-who-killed-bin-26454619 48 Likes 5 Shares

Foreign Affairs / Ramzan Kadyrov Arrives Ukraine With Threat To "Finish Ukrainians" by ogbiwa: 6:56am On Mar 15, 2022 |
Strongman leader of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov has threatened to "finish" Ukrainians if they don't surrender in chilling footage. Kadyrov, who is President Putin's ally, warned that he was in Ukraine with Russian forces on Monday (March 14). The warlord, who has been accused of serious human rights violations in the Caucasus Republic by several international organisations, uploaded a video of himself on the Telegram app where he issued the stark threat. In the clip, he could be seen analysing plans placed around a table with troops in the room, which he says was filmed in Hotomel, an airfield located near Kyiv which was captured by Russian forces in the first few days of their attack. The information has not been independently verified, reports News AU. Kadyrov wrote: “The other day we were about 20km from you Kyiv Nazis and now we are even closer." He then demanded that Ukrainian forces surrender “or you will be finished”. “We will show you that Russian practice teaches warfare better than foreign theory and the recommendations of military advisers,” he added. According to reports, it has been suggested that Chechen soldiers could play a vital role in helping Russia seize Kyiv, with mercenaries from Russia’s Wagner Group. Kadyrov has boasted about his troops strength and said Ukrainian forces are “fleeing” when they are confronted with his fighters, reports I News. According to Russia Today, Kadyrov said: “Members of the Ukrainian armed forces and national battalions, who have always bragged about their courage, flee when they see the Chechen fighters, leaving behind heavy weapons and military equipment. “Full military coordination, the correct deployment of troops and a decisive assault – that’s all we need. We must finish what we started and do it quickly. “Since [the Ukrainians] have twice refused to negotiate we must change tactics. That will convince them.” https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/world-news/putin-ally-ramzan-kadyrov-threatens-26462642 31 Likes 4 Shares

Sports / Ronaldo Considering Messi Link Up At PSG If Man Utd Don't Qualify For The UCL by ogbiwa: 7:48am On Mar 08, 2022 |
Cristiano Ronaldo has made the decision to leave Manchester United at the end of the season if they don't qualify for the Champions League, with a move to PSG high on his agenda, FootballTransfers understands. Ronaldo was absent from the Manchester derby on Sunday as Man Utd were thrashed 4-1 by Man City, with the official reason given that he was suffering from a hip flexor injury. Ronaldo has flown to Portugal with his future on his mind and, with United's Premier League struggles making a top-four spot unlikely, he is planning his next move. Sources close to the situation understand that a return to Juventus has already been ruled out, while a switch to Sporting, where he began his professional career, is also highly unlikely at this stage. As a result, CR7 is courting a move to Paris which would see him sensationally team up with Lionel Messi and Neymar at the Ligue 1 giants in a dream forward line. Manchester United have been disappointing since Ronaldo's return, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being sacked in December to be replaced by veteran coach Ralf Rangnick. Ronaldo's form has suffered since the German became interim boss, and the Red Devils are currently in fifth, one point behind Arsenal, while the Gunners have three games in hand. Ronaldo's performance in 2021/22 In the first half of the season, Ronaldo maintained his reputation as a devastating goalscorer as he frequently found the target and in big games, too. He has 15 goals in all competitions since his return, but the majority of those came in the first six months of the season. By his standards, he is on a dreadful run of goalscoring form currently, finding the net on just one occasion in his last 10 matches. His biggest contributions have come in the Champions League as he enjoyed a terrific return of six goals in six games in the Group Stage. These included vital last-minute goals against Villarreal and Atalanta to help Man Utd progress to the knockout stage. Ronaldo has not been far from criticism this season, though, with critics pointing to his lack of suitability for Rangnick's high-press system. https://www.footballtransfers.com/en/transfer-news/uk-premier-league/2022/03/man-utd-news-ronaldo-flies-portugal-plan-psg-transfer-man-utd

Sports / See Nigeria's Squad List To Face Ghana In World Cup Playoffs As Lookman Debuts by ogbiwa: 8:08am On Mar 05, 2022 |
Ademola Lookman is in line to make his Nigeria debut later this month after being named in the Super Eagles' 25-man squad for their 2022 World Cup play-off against Ghana. The 24-year-old winger, who is on loan at Leicester City from German club RB Leipzig, represented England at youth level but was cleared to play for Nigeria last month. Lookman was part of the England squad which won the Under-20 World Cup in 2017. Watford striker Emmanuel Dennis, who was withdrawn from the squad for this year's Africa Cup of Nations, has also been included by Nigeria coach Augustine Eguavoen. The Hornets reportedly refused to release Dennis for the tournament in Cameroon and a Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) statement said the 24-year-old had been excused because Watford were "baring fangs". Elsewhere, strikers Victor Osimhen and Odion Ighalo also return after missing the Nations Cup. Napoli's Osimhen tested positive for Covid-19 while recovering from facial fractures, while former Manchester United man Ighalo was blocked from joining the squad by his then-club side Al Shabab. He has since moved to fellow Saudi Arabian outfit Al Hilal. Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi will serve a ban following his red card in Nigeria's Nations Cup last-16 defeat by Tunisia and has been omitted from the squad. Ghana will host the first leg of the World Cup play-off in Cape Coast on Friday, 25 March, with the return in Abuja on Tuesday, 29 March. The Black Stars appointed former Newcastle and Brighton boss Chris Hughton as technical advisor last month, while Otto Addo is head coach of the side. Ghana sacked coach Milovan Rajevac following their group-stage exit from the Nations Cup in Cameroon. Ambition driving Super Eagles - Ighalo Ighalo hopes he can help Nigeria secure a fourth consecutive appearances at the World Cup finals, having been part of the team that played in Russia in 2018. "It's always a great opportunity to represent Nigeria and the ambition now is to help our country get the ticket against a very tough Ghana team," Ighalo told BBC Sport Africa. "It was a big disappointment not to play at Afcon but that is in the past because this is another chance for me. "We have two big games against a very strong and equally ambitious side, but we must focus on ourselves. Sports / FIFA And UEFA Suspend All Russian Clubs And National Teams From All Competitions by ogbiwa: 8:45pm On Feb 28, 2022 |
Russian football clubs and national teams have been suspended from all competitions by Fifa and Uefa after the country's invasion of Ukraine. The world and European football governing bodies said they would be banned "until further notice". It means the Russian men's team will not play their World Cup play-off matches next month and the women's team have been banned from this summer's Euro 2022 competition. Spartak Moscow have also been kicked out of the Europa League and their last-16 opponents RB Leipzig will advance to the quarter-finals. Uefa has also ended its sponsorship with Russian energy giant Gazprom. "Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine," Fifa and Uefa said in a joint statement. "Both presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people." Fifa and Uefa decided to take action after Russia, supported by Belarus, launched a military invasion of neighbouring Ukraine last Thursday. The Russian men's team had been scheduled to face Poland in a World Cup play-off semi-final on 24 March. Russian football's governing body, the RFU, said it "categorically disagreed" with the decision and would challenge it "in accordance with international sports law". Fifa had previously ruled that Russia must complete their upcoming games in neutral territory, under the title Football Union of Russia, and without their flag and anthem. However, the announcement drew criticism - and Scotland and the Republic of Ireland joined several other nations, including England, Northern Ireland and Wales, as well as Poland, the Czech Republic and Sweden, in refusing to play against Russia. Russia are in Northern Ireland's European Under-21 Championship qualifying group and their meeting in March will be cancelled. On Monday, Scottish FA president Rod Petrie wrote to his Ukrainian counterpart "to send a message of support, friendship and unity", with those two nations due to meet in their World Cup play-off semi-final on 24 March. The 2022 Champions League final, originally due to be played in St Petersburg on 28 May, has been moved to Paris while numerous clubs have taken their own steps to disassociate themselves from Russia. Manchester United has terminated its sponsorship deal with Russia's national airline Aeroflot while Bundesliga club Schalke has cancelled its partnership with main sponsor Gazprom, having last week removed the Russian energy company's logo from its shirts. "I can't understand why it took them 24 hours to make this decision," said Jim Boyce, former Fifa vice-president and honorary life president of the Irish FA, speaking to BBC Radio Ulster. "What is happening is absolutely deplorable. Quite honestly, every possible sanction that can be imposed on Russia at the minute has to be done. I applaud Fifa and I applaud Uefa for the decision that they have made today." Speaking on Monday, Tottenham manager Antonio Conte said: "The whole world has to be compact and show [it is] solid against the stupidity of the people." He added: "I think it's right to express our disappointment about the stupidity about some decisions. Football and Uefa has to be compact and to show to be strong." Other sports will follow football's lead' - analysis Dan Roan, BBC Sport editor This is the strongest move yet taken by the international football community. Russia is rapidly being reduced to the status of international sporting pariah. Of course this comes after Fifa was accused of not going far enough on Sunday instead allowing Russia to continue playing as 'RFU' with a ban on its flag and anthem. The IOC heaped pressure on football by recommending that all sports enforce a total ban on Russia and Belarus. This will undeniably prompt other sports to follow football's lead. There will also be those who say that the IOC could have gone further and say that 'this is a decision, we are commanding all sports to ban Russian athletes'. Whether they thought they had grounds to do so, legally, is another matter. Some will also point to the Sochi 2014 Games and World Cup 2018 that Putin's Russia was able to host and ask if this is all too late. Bans needed to protect integrity of global sport - IOC The IOC says it is urging sport governing bodies to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes "in order to protect the integrity of global sports competitions and for the safety of all the participants", adding that "the current war in Ukraine puts the Olympic Movement in a dilemma". It said there had been a "breach of the Olympic Truce" by those countries' governments. "While athletes from Russia and Belarus would be able to continue to participate in sports events, many athletes from Ukraine are prevented from doing so because of the attack on their country," an IOC statement read. The International Paralympic Committee is to meet on Wednesday to discuss Russia, with the Winter Paralympics set to start two days later. The British Paralympic committee has called on Russians and Belarussians to be kicked out of the Games. The British Olympic Association, along with the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Germany, has demanded the immediate exclusion of Russia and Belarus from international sport. The IOC said in their recommendations that wherever it was not possible to ban them from competing for organisational or legal reasons, such athletes should not compete under the name Russia or Belarus and should be classed as neutrals. The Russian Olympic Committee has disagreed with the IOC, saying the decision "contradicts both the regulatory documents of the IOC and the [Olympic] Charter". What else is happening in sport? The Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix, due to take place on 25 September in Sochi, was cancelled last week. The sport's governing body, the FIA, will meet on Tuesday to "discuss matters relating to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine". Badminton's world governing body (BWF) responded to Russia's invasion of Ukraine by announcing the cancellation of all tournaments in Russia and Belarus in addition to banning the national flags and anthems of the two nations. "BWF will continue to monitor the situation closely and will proactively consult our international sport movement partners to discuss other options to potentially strengthen measures against the governments of Russia and Belarus," it said. The Ukrainian Tennis Federation has called on the sport's governing body, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), to expel Russia and Belarus from the organisation and ban Russia from individual and team tournaments. Ukrainian Elina Svitolina has said she will refuse to play Russian or Belarusian players until they are classed as 'neutral athletes'. The world number 15 is due to play Anastasia Potopova of Russia at this week's Monterrey Open but has threatened to withdraw unless the Women's Tennis Association takes action. Russian Daniil Medvedev, who became the ATP's world number one on Monday, said he wanted to promote "peace all over the world" in a news conference on Friday during the Mexican Open. The ITF said: "This is a fast-evolving situation; we are in active discussion with the ITF tennis family and the ITF board to decide and align around our next course of action." At the Fencing World Cup in Cairo on Sunday, Ukraine's men's foil team refused to fence against Russia. Ukraine's Klod Younes told BBC Radio 5 Live that he and his team-mates now intend to return home and defend their country. "I knew before the competition [that I would not fence against them]. I told my team-mates and they supported me and said they would do the same," Younes said. "Today we are going to try to re-book our ticket and we will try to go to Poland, to Hungary, and then we will figure out what to do." On whether he and his team-mates will fight if necessary, he added: "Of course. This is our country. This is my country. I have to fight for it. I am defending my territory." On Monday, the UK government's Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries and Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston met with several British sport governing bodies - including the Premier League, Football Association, UK Sport and British Olympic Association - to discuss the Ukraine situation. The government has urged sports to continue with "visible signs of solidarity" with Ukraine and says it plans to talk with international counterparts later this week to mobilise further support to ostracise Russia from international sport. https://www.bbc.com/sport/athletics/60560567 10 Likes 1 Share
