EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by OGreene: 7:51pm On Jan 21, 2017
Yea. It's always better to mail the department to confirm beforehand.

One school i applied to said the candidate must have recieved 16 credits from an English-speaking country. I got a mail from them that Nigeria is not recognized as one so i should take the test.

EmanA1928:
This is not necessarily correct. Some schools will exempt one from english language tests if you possess a masters degree from the UK. always check the departmental website or university website if in doubt. Eg, university of mississippi and university of wisconsin will exempt one from IELTS/TOEFL if you have a masters degree from the UK.

Topiipii:
Hi OGreene,

The fact that others did not give a report does not make it right...

Imagine a scenario where you've been assisting a student in one way or the other for an exam only for him/her to return after the exam and tell you that his/her performance is 'OK' without being specific.

On a different note, are you a fan of Dagrin?

Sirriddy... hope those yankee people have not infected you with their F-word
Please read my other posts, my test experience is there. I have no issue with that all. I have said this again and again.

My issue is i dont have to be called out because i didnt include my test scores. Not whether its right or wrong, Overtime i havent seen people updating scores constantly. Even when i wrote the first test, i posted that day and hola'd others that wrote. I cant remember any of them responding. So i just left it there, and i thought it seem people weren't really taking it serious.

That was my thinking when i posted that mine is in a comfort zone without intending to offend anybody. Only for me to see that response which i didnt take lightly. Some people have said they dont agree with me about leaving out the scores, or that its right to include it; thats even better than just calling me out at first.

My response isnt different because i have taken the exam, if it were before, i will still have responded.

Dagrin fan, what's this even about?

Let him continue with the f-word. Smh @people that rather conclude its take-take and off. Really smh.

You can pm me.

Evening All,
I visited the Magoosh site for GRE prep not long ago but couldn't. i realized its not free, one must have an account and pay for anykind of material needed. Pls, how do you guyz do it? how do i lay hands on the videos and other test materials. Thanks.
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by OGreene: 7:33pm On Jan 17, 2017
Hi Time2Smile, congrats again. You have really been doing well.

My issue wasn't even talking about the test experience. I knew you tried for me, it was so disappointing that I didn't have a good report to tell you. So I just announced the score is just there, a comfortable zone. Who is happy talking about a low score? If my test prep didn't work for me, is it going to help others? For real, if people yet to take feel they will learn from it, I will explain asap.

Imagine my shock when I saw the epistle of how selfish I am withholding the scores. I couldn't condone this. Has reporting the score here now compulsory, that it has to be put out that way! Because if it were so, I would gladly play along. Its been a choice matter. Some people never talked about their scores, and no one called them out. So why me? What I wanted to do later is if some people (that had been with me on this insisted), i will pm the score. Am very shy about it.

I didn't even know they were referring to the test experience most of the time the argument lasted. I didn't intentionally hold that back. I have added that straight away.

Time2Smile:
I think we should move on from the fact that O'Green failed to report his scores ad experience. As much as I don't agree with his decision, He is not the first nor will He be the last to do so. Some even neglects the thread entirely once their test is done. This thread has always been courteous and civil, please let keep it that way.

I got my official GRE scores and AWA score is 4.5 I am a tad disappointed as I was hoping to emulate Scholastica16 90 something percentile score. The 4.5 is 82nd percentile which is more than good enough for my field. Forward and upwards.

I am having a challenge getting suitable referees. Those I would like to use are not responding to their emails, and most schools require online submission of letters of recommendation preferably through institutions based email addresses. Can I get letters from someone who is not my former Lecturer?. Suggestions are needed please.

EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by OGreene: 8:02am On Jan 17, 2017
I still dont find the way you address this matter funny. I dont.

Which entitlement for Christ's sake? Pray tell. This is so wrong!! Please no need to tilt this a different way. Please stop this.

I posted after the exam to show you people that helped and others yet to write that my scores are not that good, nothing to be proud of, that i hope for the best with admission. I wouldnt even advise someone to have that score. People should follow your steps and Time2smile to do well. How will my poor prep strategy and not-to-okay scores help another to perform better? I already added that peope should add more time to their prep and start earlier. But you wouldn't let me be. Hmmmm.

If you are now referring to the exam experience (i didnt even know thats the issue), it's a different thing. What stopped you from saying "ok so you are not happy with your score, but what was the experience like?". You called it entitlement. Like seriously...

Exam experience: VQVQV. I found the verbal quite tough, i did my best to answer the TC and SE. For RC, i read the short passages and answered, no time for the long ones so i just ticked anyhow. Quants felt better; i made sure to solve all the questions, anyone that i get stuck after the 1st minute of solving, I just tick any answer and move on. But for the 1st Quant, i didnt solve the last 2 questions, they are 'fill in the answer' type so ticking couldn't even have helped. 2 losses, very painful. The 2nd one i got to the end before the time finished, couldn't afford to let any ques go unsolved. Although sometimes, i dont even bother to solve some if i cant decipher how to go about it or if i feel it will take unnecessary time.

For AWA, i still used the method of choosing a side for the issue, explained with 3 examples, added a counter point and closed. Argument, i referred to Magoosh fallacy examples, and used the ones that fit the question.

Scholastica16:
It is funny how humble you were when you needed help to how entitled you now sound. My only pain is that your ungratefulness might ruin someone else's chance who was more deserving.

The other day, someone on this thread considered rewriting because she had 298. I supported that move but someone else recommended she could still use the score (based on her profile) and he offered to recommend schools to her. That score is not stellar but she was willing to share it and now she may have gained information that she would not have had, had she kept it close to the chest.

What I can perceive from your disposition is that you already feel you won't need the house again so 'to hell' with what we have to say. Don't worry. Life has a way of bringing people like you who posted copiously on this thread asking for tips only to be wise enough to tell us what what decisions he has to make and the ones he is willing to let others make for him.

BTW, I have no grouse with you or with those people that did not post because there is a way this story typically ends. Either they get stuck at some point and need specific help so they come back here to ask for it (and in such situations they would be coerced to still give that dreaded report) or they go on to achieve whatever dreams they set before them and in that case we still lose nothing. It only makes sense that as the ox is threshing the floor it should not be muzzled while at it. (Let the thread that has helped you gain from your experience so to speak).

PS:notice that 95% of the active posters here are people that are already satisfied with their scores or better still, are already in competitive grad programs. So when we ask for the report (not necessarily the score) we are doing so for the benefit of others not for ourselves.
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by OGreene: 11:06pm On Jan 16, 2017
Smh

[quote author=andradaeze post=52867951]I agree with sirRiddy and Scholatisca16.

"And it is great when you show others what you did that they should not do"- this was included or did you miss it?

Finally, remember this adage "It is better to give than to receive" - true, and i have given back to this thread.
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by OGreene:
So yes, its my personal decision. I dont feel it will help anyone. I have added what i didnt do that others should do.

And like i said, if i have any info that i know will help others, i put it forward (I have done that in the past). So this has nothing to do with selfishness.

sirRiddy:
I will disagree with you on this one.
Just because others did not post their scores or
experience does not make your not posting acceptable.
At the end of the day, it is your personal decision. Also, there is
a reason it is called lessons learned. Your scores do not matter, what
we want to know are your strategies and your mistakes. It is a long
journey and selfishness is the least desirable trait.
It always has a way of catching up with you somehow.Hopefully you give back
to the thread just like many others did in the past, from which you have
greatly benefited from. For now, get some rest and go on with other
parts of your application.
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by OGreene: 9:21pm On Jan 16, 2017
I know why this thread exists.

If i didn't regard this thread, i wouldnt even have posted after my exams. Some others wrote yesterday and last week, have any of them posted yet? Why are you calling me outhuh undecided Take time ooo.

Not everyone reports their scores here, that's what i have seen (feel free to correct me). Kindly read back for the past one month and check how many people talked about their scores. Even people that kept asking for direction last month, i cant remember seeing their feedback later. Seems like you should rather address a general issue.

Perhaps if it becomes a ritual, everyone will follow suit. If i have anything i know that will help someone i will definitely put it here.

I believe what will help people most is for people that performed very well to state how they achieved high scores. If i feel my scores are not fantastic, why should i go into those details? How is it going to help those yet to write?

So people should start prep early, intensive prep. 2-3 months ahead and bring out enough time for it. Thats what i wish i did.

Scholastica16:
There is a reason this thread was started and to that end, why we come here to report scores and share tips. May be you think it is to gloat or appear scholarly but you'd be sorely mistaken.

People generally report scores so that others could among other things:

1. Learn what they did to achieve such scores
2. Help evaluate the profiles
3. Recommend schools, tips, scholarships etc.

You have seen others give reports on their GRE experiences and in doing so, thank certain people. It is beyond establishing contacts away from NL. I am almost certain people did that because of the information they gained from such people that aided their preparations and eventual success(es).

Consequently, I am disappointed that you who at various points sought and gained tidbits here that must have helped you attain your score decided to keep mum with the report you owe the house. Perhaps, you may think your account would make no difference but you should also take note, that everyone's experience and preparation would not be exactly alike. Afterall, we have seen people who got a composite of 310 and yet their experiences were completely different.
