Thanks o jare. I dont think it's bad.
Exactly what came to my mind, if they ask me about Buhari, I will ask them about Trump. If we look deeper, we will see that no nation is perfect and each has its own issues. The day you taunt me about my country's inadequacy, be ready to hear about yours. Nigeria, like other African countries, is still in the works. Things will get better if we are willing to do better.

Amidst the rumbles going on, we have many good people and still have opportunities we can use to our collective prosperity. Why would someone deny his nationality abroad? (threat to life aside). I am yet to understand that.

Mayflowa:
You are not serious really...So you really allow people to bully you. How did their own youths vote for Trump?

With all due respect madam chioma, you're derailing this thread. Please show some maturity and back down. Thank you.

Otherwise I'll personally report you to the moderators. I don't know why you haven't been banned yet.

There's no child on this thread. It's not a thread for jambites or something. This thread has a specific purpose; a platform for past, present and prospective takers of the gre test to rub minds and ideas. As well as other associated admission procedures.

Please put that in mind.

No. I started immediately because I know other people will be asking as well. I sent a mail to the Assistant Director copying finaid, one school gave me, the other said I should appeal. Am thinking of giving them a call later.

After the admission offer, did you wait at all before you start bombarding them with funding mail?

Check the program requirements for the background of candidates they want. If they are strict about prior health knowledge, then you can check other schools. If they welcome students with various backgrounds (they might list it) and if you see something close to your undergrad, then you are fine. But its best you send a mail to the school telling them your background and ask if you stand a chance, to clear doubts since you are changing field kinda.

If you didnt get any scholarship/ fellowship from the school, go ahead and request. Or if you got a small amount you can request for an increase.
I did and got an offer.
We pray those waiting get admissions + funding.

Thank you. UC Berkeley sent me the MasterCard Fdn scholarship form to fill, will do that tonight.

I hope it all works out.

Whether you call this entering, na you sabi. Even b4 i got the admissions, i pasted my scores, not on this thread. Plus people i chatted with on this thread, of course you dont know all these.
Its still a voluntary thing. I didnt put up my profile in the first place, he asked that i add that, no accusations, and I dropped it. Matter finish!

drhopeful:
Congrats Man! But I have to enter you small... Remember how you REFUSED to divulge your GRE scores despite all the appeals made on the GRE thread. Now shebi because you don get admission to top schools, you just dey display the 'poor' scores anyhow, even the ones we did not know about (I never knew you took it twice). Na real wa for you. Just wondering if revealing your scores earlier on that thread would have marred your chances of admission in any way.... Anyway, I am happy for you.

TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by OGreene:
Undergrad degree – Zoology. I majored in Parasitology (the health sciences aspect). CGPA- 3.73/5.0 (3.26/4.0). Research – my final year project. Work experience – 5 years. Ministry of Health and banking. Been to some programs that center on development, knowledge of 2 foreign languages, had proper leadership training.
GRE- 302/4.0 Then re-wrote and got 307/3.5. My Quants was much better in the second one, 63 percentile. Only UMN asked for TOEFL, so I took it, 95 (R26/L25/S23/W21).
LOR: Good Profs who have become my friends plus one non-academic referee, a vast man. I didn’t see the letters. Had to use my supervisor once (emergency situation).
SOP: I wrote about how I grew up surrounded by dev issues and want to do something about them (my life mission), my health and finance knowledge, why the school stands out, what I want to focus on (major) and whom I want to work with in the dept, and how I will join UN and work to liberate poorer communities focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa. Optional letter- every other thing I have done that I could relate to dev, some extra-curricular activities. I wrote from the bottom of my heart, nothing bogus, just the way I felt about dev.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by OGreene: 6:15pm On Mar 14, 2017
Finally saw someone going for Dev. Congrats!

ecoleco:
Thanks for your input Chidinho10. The school is neither UT Austin nor TAMU, otherwise it would be an easy decision. It's UTRGV.
The Duke program is Masters in International Development Policy (MIDP).
I have replied your PM.
All the best in your 2018 application!

Hello, the external funding is it Joint Japan/ World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program JJWBGSP? I meant to apply but didn't.

i think people will want to know the name of the Texas school to help you weigh your options.

ecoleco:
I have a decision to make and I will appreciate your input:

I got a PhD offer from one of the 'University of Texas' schools and I put this school under my SAFE SCHOOL category during my application.

I also got an MSc offer from Duke University but the funding will come from an external organization.

Because of the reputation behind Duke University, and the not-so-good reputation from where I got the PhD offer, I couldn't dismiss the Duke offer easily.

I am willing to do the Msc with Duke and then move on to Phd in Duke or another similarly placed university, however the external organization funding the Msc constrains the recipients to J-1 Visa, meaning you return home for at least 2 years after your schooling. Without this constraint, I will choose the MSc offer from Duke university and sacrifice the two years for another Masters degree. Please does anybody in the house have any experience with J-1 visa or know someone who is currently on J-1?

My little beef with the PhD offer is the kind of of school where I will get placement after my studies. It seems that where you obtained your PhD matters with respect to the kind of schools that give you an offer after your studies. Meaning that only schools in the same league and category as your school will give you tenure offers and not schools in a higher league. Or doesn't it matter?

Good morning.

Opened my mail and saw congratulatory message from Uni of California Berkeley. 5/5 and all positive. OMG!!! Admission letter and funding to come weeks later.
I dont know what helped my application most, I would really love to let others do same. I have responded to several pms about my application, its just my SOP I have been discussing. I have talked about it here briefly. My LOR were from very good profs and 1 geek. Then average academic profile. My GRE score broke my heart a thousand times.

Thank God. Thank you guys (so many names to mention smiley). This thread played a role definitely. If there is anyone considering Development track, we can discuss in-depth about your application.

To anyone that wants to apply to top schools, you can give it a shot and stay positive. But as LagosismyHome said when I started, add more schools, safe schools. Spread your risk.

Stage 3: fellowship/funding hunt. That's another big thing to deal with. I will keep pushing.

Thank you once again

TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by OGreene: 10:27pm On Mar 12, 2017
@borie4u, the bolded is crucial. If you want to reapply, take time and go through the admission requirements. What you are deficient in, acquire it asap. You cant change your CGPA. Try get a better GRE score since you want to rewrite.

For each application I submitted, I made sure I met ALL the requirements. One school wanted Statistics knowledge, i enrolled for it online sharpaly, studied it and added that in the application. One had foreign lang requirement, I already had that (French), if not I would have enrolled in Alliance Francaise. One wanted substantial experience in Devt, (I had little). I remembered the events/programs and voluntary works I have engaged in that had aspects of Devt, I elaborated on these. Try and see how you can match each req. Leave nothing out.

Another thing, I read through the schools' blogs, listened to their youtube videos and Facebook live sessions on what they want to see in a candidate. I dwelt on it for days, evaluating my fit. Then I wrote my SOP and tried convincing them why I fit in, coupled with my passion about Devt.

imperiouxx:
Such disappointment makes you feel imperfect, believe me. I felt this way too. Search for another 3 schools and work on your sop if possible. I had to take medical ethics ($1200) and medical terminology ($250) online just to meet up with the application requirement for only 1 school (Wagner College). I already made up my mind that if I don't get in in 2016/2017 cycle, I would reapply for 2017/2018 cycle and no turning back until I get in.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by OGreene: 9:47pm On Mar 12, 2017
But you are yet to hear from one school, right? Still hold one please. Its not over till its over.

borie4u:
Thanks imperiouxx baba. I already told GboyegaD about the rejects. Had 301 GRE , 92 TOEFL, MSc 4.04/5 n bsc of 3.39/5.00. Thinking maybe cause my GRE result is not too good. Ok. Its their School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in DC.
I checked on gradcafe, they gave few students funding. One guy, same course, got $115k for the 2 years...lucky guy. Then some others got btw $25-70k.

LagosismyHome:
They are both expensive for this exchange rates....my sister is in dc sharing a house with 3 other students and the rent is 950 per month (to give u an idea)... that with no bills at all so for me DC or NY wont be a first preference .. except in the time when dollar was less than 200

Although John Hopkins is not in DC....it is in baltimore MD.....the rent in Baltimore will be cheaper than DC... Also John Hopkins usually are very stingy with money. I have quite a no of friends who went there but everyone i know paid or got student loans so its my impression that the school very stingy with funding

As for distance . Not too far as both cities are in the east coast. You can make it in 3 hours between both cities .
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by OGreene: 9:32pm On Mar 12, 2017
Average profile. Now I believe when the schools say they make admission decisions based on holistic assessment of one's overall application. I applied with 3.7/5 and 307

Columbia not Cornell

your profile go make sense die
UMN,JHU and Cornell
na only you waka come?

OluDare01:
I've only been to NY but I'm sure the cost of living in both cities would be almost the same
Gunther6 is at JHU Baltimore but he often goes to DC
You may send him a pm
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by OGreene:
Talk about other expenses... Please whats the diff in cost of living in D.C. compared to New York? Are they close in comparison? Am leaning towards Johns Hopkins than Columbia.

Anyone schooling in any of the 2 schools or recently graduated? Would love to have a chat. Thanks.

happyday:
Hi!

You should wait till you get the funding information as said. Only then can you realistically estimate if it's worth a shot to accept and enroll. Basically, determine the total fees (tuition and other expenses) you'll need to pay for the first year on one hand, and know how much the school will be offsetting. You'll then be able to know how possible it is to get the difference from working part time and all.

Good luck.

Okay bruv.

Walspring:
You never thought like I did when the guy told me and for me verify he paid I asked him to request for his bank statement before I could advise him.

As for me it's what you tell me I will advise you on, if you lie to me I will advise you on the lies and if it's truth I will advise on you on the truth.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by OGreene: 10:29pm On Mar 11, 2017
Already thought of that. First thing is verify claim before anything further.

TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by OGreene: 6:06pm On Mar 11, 2017
They guy is supposed to get GTB to rescind their claim. Thats the only way the school will understand. As long as GTB doesn't tell the school to drop case that it was a mistake nothing go change. Sad story by the way.

I feel the guy should go to GTB and get them to do the right thing. If the guy is still willing, he should pm me.

Walspring:
Dunno but it could be caused by network during online transaction processing just as the atm will debit your account but it won't pay you cash and still reverse it back.

The guy called the school and explained, I asked him to get his bank statement and scan it to them and circle the transaction part but the person in charged was a stiffnecked person and didn't even reverse the decision at all after the guy evidence
