GboyegaD: Happy Birthday Ojap! Wishing you a wonderful year filled with outstanding success. I pray God grant the desires of your heart and come this time next year, you would look back to this year and have great things to be thankful for.Thank you so much bro. I say a big Amen to the prayers. Congratulations to you again. |
GboyegaD: Thanks a lot bro. I think so too. I actually had like 6 admissions from the US however, I feel Calgary is the topmost of the schools I got in Economics and with the 4years guaranteed funding that requires just one semester of 10hours/week job, I think it is the best thing ever.Wow!!! That's the best decision ever + you get your green card in your second year in the program. I went for the AAPG conference in Halifax sometimes in 2011 and needed a Canadian Visa. I applied in the afternoon and got a 2year Multiple the following morning. I was like "so easy"? I think living or schooling in America open doors to many other countries. Congrats again bro. I am happy for you. |
Yvete: Guess you're overdosed with cakes!!Cakes?? Only if it's the ice-cream one . The party will be in California, the venue and time is kept as a secret for now.The organizers plan to start sending texts out by 1800hrs PST....you should check your phone at that time. It's going to be till mama calls. ![]() ![]() |
Yvete: Happy Birthday OjaP. Have a great year ahead! Thanks dear. I appreciate. |
GboyegaD: I applied through the online platform last week saturday and got an email today asking me to send my passport that my application has been approved. It took just 6 days. I just left the Post Office where I went to submit my documents. I wasn't required to do medicals or asked for my original documents although I attached scanned copy of my transcripts with my statement of interest. I hope to get my TRV next week all things been equal.Congrats bro!! So fast and easy prolly because you applied from the US? |
kpolli: So it was my egbon's birthday and he didn't even tell me....Hahahaha, Egbon ke?? I actually forgot it is my b'day until I started seeing notifications on FB. Thanx bro. |

Ms Nas: Happy baiday to youuu!Thanx dear. I just clocked 20 ![]() |
Square65: Yes ... as far as I'm concernedEven when they ask you if it is OPT? That I said NO doesn't mean I said NO outrightly. I tried to "sweet-mouth" them but all still boiled down to "we want someone who doesn't hold a time limited visa" Lo ba tan. |
imperiouxx: By God's grace, I can't wait till then. A need a positive change in my lifeCongrats in advance. PhD next? imperiouxx: Yea but I've extended it to 24 months because of unforeseen. This cracked me up....I thought I was the only one who did that... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
webstradamus: Yeah ... that's the problem with H-1B. Its completely dependent on a company's willingness to file for you. By 200k, I meant the quota (hope you didn't think I meant filing fees)I understand. Most of these companies are not even ready to talk to you at all if you look or your name sound African. I have attended up to 12 interviews with some major and small oil companies in the past and one of the first set of questions they ask are, Are you authorized to work? Me: No, but...... (trying to play smart into selling OPT, CPT and H-1B) Most of them told me in confidence that they don't sponsor and not ready to go through the stress when there are other eligible Americans or folks who are authorized to work. So cra**zy right ![]() But with prayer and GOD, one may be lucky to get an internship. When you get that, work hard and make them like you, by the time you are done interning, they won't have any choice than to keep you (even when you haven't graduated). I have seen it happen. Let's all work hard and pray - we will all make it. |
webstradamus: It already is ... that's what killed the bill! Democrats vehemently opposed it. I'm also against it because of the selective nature of eligible institutions (only R1). The only thing on board right now is the comprehensive reform which looks good so far for STEM graduates and then for non-STEM, H-1B's will be increase to about 200k (or something like that).Even with that, a company must be and/or willing to offer a job and sponsor you right? It is finished!!!!! |
Yvete: Thank you! I've said this one too many times. That's my only beef with Indians. Very very annoying.Prolly her job fell into one of the below; •Institutions of higher education •Non-profit entities related or affiliated to a higher education institution •Non-profit research organizations or governmental research organizations |
nice4life: Getting better means the economy is booming and if you are from a country like Nigeria you dont have to wait for like 6years for your employer to file your green card, you can actually file it at the same time you are filing the H1B.I will explain the stem bill later or yvete should, need to go now.The economy is booming and Obama is cutting budget?? What makes Nigeria so important that we won't have to wait for 6years like other countries? Yes, you can file green card direct if/when the STEM bill is passed. For now, you have to file for H-1B first and file for green card after maybe 3-5 years of staying on H-1B. Yvette: Is this correct? |
webstradamus: AFAIK, the STEM bill is dead! Same with all its other variants. The gang of 8 are looking to accommodate the provisions of those bills into the comprehensive immigration reform bill. And from what I gathered from their earlier deliberations, they seem to have a better deal for graduates with advanced STEM degrees. These graduates would be able to file for a conditional PR with the condition being that they continuing practicing in a STEM field throughout that time.I think this is exactly what the bill is all about. But won't the issue of cancellation of the visa lottery be an impediment? Summary of the STEM Jobs Act (H.R. 6429): The STEM Jobs Act eliminates the diversity lottery green card program and reallocates up to 55,000 green cards a year to new green card programs for foreign graduates of U.S. universities with advanced STEM degrees. These green cards are first made available to foreign graduates with doctorates and any remaining green cards are then made available for foreign graduates with master’s degrees. Which Students Qualify? PhDs: The bill creates a new green card category for aliens who have received STEM doctorates from U.S. universities. Foreign students will be eligible for STEM green cards if they – • Have received a doctorate from an eligible U.S. university in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or the physical sciences (other than biological sciences); • Agree to work for at least five years for the petitioning employer or in the U.S. in a STEM field; • Have taken all their course work (including internet courses) while physically present in the United States; and • Are petitioned for by an employer who has gone through labor certification to show that there are not sufficient American workers able, willing, qualified and available for the job. Master’s Degrees: The bill creates a new green card category for aliens who have received STEM master’s degrees from U.S. universities. If any green cards are not used by aliens with doctorates, they will then be made available to foreign graduates with master’s degrees. To be eligible, an alien must – • Have received a two year master’s degree from an eligible U.S. university in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or the physical sciences (other than biological sciences); • Have majored in college in a STEM field; • Agree to work for at least five years for the petitioning employer or in the U.S. in a STEM field; 2 • Have taken all their course work (including internet courses) while physically present in the United States; and • Be petitioned for by an employer who has gone through labor certification. Which Universities Qualify? The STEM Jobs Act narrowly defines what constitutes a research university to ensure the STEM green card system is not just a golden ticket for those wanting to come to the U.S. To qualify for the STEM green card program, a school must – • Be eligible for federal student financial aid programs; • Be accredited; • Be classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a doctorate-granting university with very high or high level of research activity, or be classified by the National Science Foundation after the date of enactment, pursuant to an application by the university, as having equivalent research activity to such schools; • Be at least 10 years old; and • Not provide incentive payments to persons based on securing foreign students for the university. The STEM Jobs Act Protects Americans Students and Workers. In order to protect American students and workers in STEM fields, the bill requires as part of the labor certification process that an employer submit a job order to the appropriate state workforce agency. In addition, the bill requires that the state workforce agency post the job order on its official agency website to make it more accessible to American workers seeking employment. The bill also requires that the Department of Homeland Security post on its official website information about the employers who sponsor STEM graduates for green cards, the number of STEM graduates they sponsor, and the occupations of the STEM graduates they sponsor. In addition, because of the often difficult career prospects for American students graduating with PhDs in biological and biomedical fields, foreign students with degrees in these fields will not be eligible for STEM green cards. imperiouxx: Hi Ojap. hope you're doing fine?I'm doing good bro. Looking unto GOD ![]() How are you too? Are you graduating this year? |
nice4life: Things getting better for prospective F1 student, hope they pass the stem bill this year. Can you please explain to us how it is getting better? No where in your quoted article was "F-1" even mentioned. Also, can you or anyone please enlighten us about the STEM Bill? Thank you. |
Yvete: We've got one Geologist in the house. Wait till he dissects your question! Haha, I'm biased in favor of one school on your list though. Success! ![]() conyema12: I want to thank the Gurus of this wonderful forum for their invaluable contributions..the likes of Ojap, imperioux Yvete and many others are rare gem in this forum. and I must say that your input are quite legendary.Conyema: You made a very good decision applying to those schools, they are some of the best geological schools around. To avoid repetition, I will direct you to the link below where I made some comments which you may find useful. https://www.nairaland.com/1229483/general-u.s.a-student-visa-enquiries-part4/1#14850027 Nonetheless, I will like to know what your research interests are. Are you interested in Reservoir Characterization? Diagenesis/Porosity of Reservoir Rocks? Climate Change? Structural Geology? Seismic? Geochemical Analysis? etc. Your research interest and/or proximity to oil companies should play a vital role in your choice of school. Hey, why is LSU, UT Austin, USC, Stanford,Colorado School of Mines not on your list? . One more thing, be sure of the visa if you can get admission into any of the PhD schools in America. You stand up to 90% chance atleast - that is if we remove the NRC factor. ![]() I wish you all the best. |
Yvete: We've got one Geologist in the house. Wait till he dissects your question! Haha, I'm biased in favor of one school on your list though. Success! This caught my attention.....brb. ![]() #space reserved. Let me get off work. |
sigilolu156: I will be needing cash . Anyone has any ideas about the most efficitent on-campus job ? I.e best pay to work done ratio. Are you making this enquiry on behalf of a friend or relative just like many people claimed here? If not, I would say you should know more if truly you spent 4 years at RUTGERS. You should know even much more if you have been in the United states for atleast 3 years. |
sigilolu156: Thanks . It went as u predicted she didn't even ask for any documents we just chatted about who has gone where. You had your first degree from the almighty "Rutgers" and think the V.O would bounce or give you a tough time? NO. Congratulations!!!! |
Yvete: YINDI ... Thanks to Prof OjaP!!Who goes there? Who is disturbing my sleep?? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You now know the meaning of #Yindi abi? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
imperiouxx: You need to know the kind of people getting that $5,000/$6,000 per month here in the US. That's within the range of kings salary not qualification seeking students. Well, it's your call.I was surprised when I saw that too bro. How many people even make $6k in the US? Some college professors don't even make up to that in a month. What the guy said is too good to be true. |
imperiouxx: 1st bold: If actually your intention is to school, graduate and further study or look for job in US, just background check on you is enough to send you into the next available flight to Nigeria. Depending on the schools you applied to, if it's those that ask for professional evaluation....... Just forget about that run transcript.Truth and nothing but the truth. The dream part actually cracked me up.... ![]() |
It turns out that, - The hospital made a mistake 'cos that was not Mazi's result, the lab attendant was so careless and wrongly labelled the wrong sample in Mazi's name?? - Mazi was advised to go to another hospital to confirm if he was truly +ve by the supposed "angel" he just met ? - At the end, he was not HIV positive....lol. |
