Better-person:You are asking the wrong person. I was one of those recommending a second degree, if I know of a school that accept lower grades, I would of course not be a supporter of the **second degree thingy**. You should ask other folks too. I am sorry I can't be of help at this time. |

edun.o:You already have an intent if you have an immigrant visa petition pending. I honestly do not think any VO will approve your F-1 visa, I may be wrong though. |

Better-Person:Let me tell you the bitter truth, please note that I don't also intend to diminish your joy but to make you look at other options and not waste your time and money. Just likely Yvette rightly posited, forget about getting into any Engineering grad school in the USA with a 2.10 undergrad GPA. The top 3 -ish in the US of A are Medical schools, Law schools and Engineering schools. Engineering schools in particular have their pick of brightest students, they go for students who are tops of their class. You will never ever get into any Engineering school graduate program even if you have a perfect GRE score. Peeps with a GPA higher than 3.0 and good GRE scores still struggle to even get in. Some B or C rated schools however still accept a low GRE of atleast 2.7 but with a very high GRE score and recommendation letters - Please note that this does not apply to Petroleum Engineering. There are few schools that offer the Pet. Eng. programs in the USA, so you should expect that they will be highly competitive. My advise: Follow Yvette's advise - second degree. You may also need to write a very strong SOP, and also explain why you think you had a low undergrad GPA. Make them believe that wasn't your best and that you could do better if given a last/another chance. |
geodarmy: @ IT and Engineering.Welcome back "baba". We need talk ooo. |

geodarmy: ImperiouxxYvette I think I know the website you are talking about. I remember geodarmy posting something like that. More reason why I am quoting his post. www.myvisajobs.com |
Rickywowoz: Oga u seem to know alot about this oil and gas industry..are u into petroleum too?? Or do u live in ND??Hahaha....know alot ke? I don't think so sha. Or is it because I am in the process of graduating with a MS in Geology? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Well, I am into petroleum, I live and school in California. I am also a Petroleum Geologist with ![]() |
imperiouxx: Got a friend from ND, stranded after BS in geology but has to if to go for his MS or come down to the southern region. Never knew AL is among but I'm sure it's a silent Oil state. Thanks for that oil guru....... Tuale!.You must have a Masters in Geology for you to get an entry level or junior geologist position. BS holders only get the geotech positions, this is highly competitive too. This is not the same for Petroleum engineers though because most companies only require you to have a BS to work for them. Please advise your friend to complete his/her MS and try as much as possible to get some internship positions before graduation. Alaska is one of the largest oil producing state in the USA second to Texas, Alaska has been in the news right from the Exxon Valdez saga in the 80's, that is similar in nature to the recent BP spill in the Gulf oil Mexico. Below are the top 6 oil producing states in the US; TEXAS, ALASKA, CALIFORNIA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEW MEXICO and OKLAHOMA TEXAS is first because of the Gulf of Mexico deep water exploration, production, appraisal and development. It is projected that North Dakota will move to the 1st or second position in few years because of its reserves. Did you just call me oil guru? No oooo..... . |
Rickywowoz: you are right buddy,i read about the north dakota boom but i wanted to confirm from you guys that are there already,as u knw internet dnt always paint the picture of the real situation..Yes, that is North Dakota for you . Please be warned that admission into the only 2 geology graduate schools in North Dakota is now very competitive. Reason being that those schools now enjoy generous donations and fundings from the oil companies and even the state government since the oil boom. Many grad students get alot of funding in the form of tuition waiver, RA, TA and even internships and/or placements. Of interest is that more than 60 percent of ND revenue comes from Oil. The only two geology graduate schools in the state are; North Dakota State University, Fargo. University of North Dakota. I don't know much about the petroleum engineering programs in those schools but you can check to see if they offer a M.S in Pet. Eng. Note: While applying to those schools, please have a high GRE score, good recommendations, reserach/work experience and a very well written SOP. Don't ask me why..... ![]() |
imperiouxx: Since petroleum is confined to locations, cancel out NM and ND. Your best bet is to stay TX or CA. If not, NM is good and cheap too. Only if you want to study mining then NM is the best. To study geology, all except ND is good. To study ice, ocean, polar bears, penguins, dolphins or whales then a semester in AL is good if you can endure far below freezing point of water.Bros, North Dakota is the -ish now for Oil and Gas. North Dakota is near amazing geology, the oil boom in ND is no more news. The Bakken formation in the state contain up to 4.3 billion barrels of reserve. Employment rate in ND is now less than 4.3% due to the oil boom. Geology or Petroleum Engineering grad students will have no problem interning with the local oil companies. This may eventually lead to a permanent job. Also, most of the oil companies there are constantly looking for contractors to work for them, this means experience for starters (grad students who are still in school). University of Alaska Fairbanks has one of the best Petroleum Engineering program in the country, I think it is worth it to endure the cold, afterall I have friends who schooled there and didn't die of the extreme cold weather conditions. And YES, you are all correct that California, Texas, Alaska and Loisianna are states where the oil money is, but please add North Dakota to the list. That is the reigning state now. |
