Yvete: LMAO!!! You're BAD! cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy You know I said the same thing when I read that status.
I think she says stuff like that on FB to impress people in Nigeria. Even Nurses earn more than banker's Peanuts.

I didn't know she went to Nigeria because I blocked her updates from my homepage. She talks too damn much about her life!
Did you see her status that says, "I quit my job to party full-time. This is my true calling". ROTLMAO!! She's nice though, PARTIES HARD and very outgoing! I have a like/dislike thing for her, I donno ... grin grin grin grin
Yea, I saw it....she's so unique. She brightens up my day anytime I go on her wall, especially after a long day at work.

Hey, do you think a medical doctor or Pet. Engineer or even a Professor would quit her job to party full-time? Only a cashier or an accountant with B of A would do that... grin

Better-person:
Bro, can you recommend schools that will accept me with my CGPA?
You are asking the wrong person. I was one of those recommending a second degree, if I know of a school that accept lower grades, I would of course not be a supporter of the **second degree thingy**.

You should ask other folks too. I am sorry I can't be of help at this time.

Better-Person:Let me tell you the bitter truth, please note that I don't also intend to diminish your joy but to make you look at other options and not waste your time and money.

Just likely Yvette rightly posited, forget about getting into any Engineering grad school in the USA with a 2.10 undergrad GPA. The top 3 -ish in the US of A are Medical schools, Law schools and Engineering schools.

Engineering schools in particular have their pick of brightest students, they go for students who are tops of their class. You will never ever get into any Engineering school graduate program even if you have a perfect GRE score. Peeps with a GPA higher than 3.0 and good GRE scores still struggle to even get in.

Some B or C rated schools however still accept a low GRE of atleast 2.7 but with a very high GRE score and recommendation letters - Please note that this does not apply to Petroleum Engineering. There are few schools that offer the Pet. Eng. programs in the USA, so you should expect that they will be highly competitive.

My advise: Follow Yvette's advise - second degree. You may also need to write a very strong SOP, and also explain why you think you had a low undergrad GPA. Make them believe that wasn't your best and that you could do better if given a last/another chance.

geodarmy: Imperiouxx

You have spoken well but I may need to add some more.

- As per the STEM bill, I will beg you to please speak for yourself alone. Many people are still ignorant of what the bill is. A lot of people coming from Nigeria all think they will get a green card immediately they get to the US with a STEM major forgetting that a company will be ready or willing to sponsor first. Even if the quota is increased to 1 million green cards per year, the IT guys will get more than 60% of it because they are in high demand. Please check the office of foreign labour website to confirm this.

- You are right, not every international student make good money or gets H1B/Green card every year, but like I said earlier the IT, Health sectore and the Oil and Gas sector have an edge over others. The IT sector for example have the highest number of H-1B Visas per year (source: the ofice of foreign labour certification). Only "accountants and auditors" fall in the Top 10. Please check this link: http://www.myvisajobs.com/Document/DisplayPDF.aspx?F=H1B-Work-Visa-July-2012

- Different companies with different pay (Agree).

- You don't have to be Engineering inclined from Nigeria to be able to study Petroleum Engineering or Geological Sciences at Masters level in the USA. Your first degree in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry will get you an admission. All you need to do is just take the necessary prerequisites before graduation. You can check Engineering schools catalogues to confirm this please. A girl that I know had a finance degree and switched to Geology for Masters, she is currently working with Chevron. There are many guys that I know too who are engineers now that also have a chemistry or maths background.

- Biochemistry is a very good discipline no doubt with interesting fields. I was actually in my first year in the University studying Biochemistry before I switched over to Geology. The message I am passing across is that the rate at which employers file for Biochemists compared to other majors is so low.

- Like I told Mamacita earlier, everything about life boils down to luck. And my position here is based on "generalization" and "percentage". That doesn't mean that someone who studied Yoruba language at University of Texas or Eastern Michigan University will not get an employer to file for him or her. It is all about GOD.

I rest my case.
Yvette
I think I know the website you are talking about. I remember geodarmy posting something like that. More reason why I am quoting his post.

Rickywowoz: Oga u seem to know alot about this oil and gas industry..are u into petroleum too?? Or do u live in ND??
Hahaha....know alot ke? I don't think so sha. Or is it because I am in the process of graduating with a MS in Geology? gringringringrin

Well, I am into petroleum, I live and school in California. I am also a Petroleum Geologist with lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part3 by OjaP: 7:11pm On Feb 06, 2013
imperiouxx: Got a friend from ND, stranded after BS in geology but has to if to go for his MS or come down to the southern region. Never knew AL is among but I'm sure it's a silent Oil state. Thanks for that oil guru....... Tuale!.
You must have a Masters in Geology for you to get an entry level or junior geologist position. BS holders only get the geotech positions, this is highly competitive too. This is not the same for Petroleum engineers though because most companies only require you to have a BS to work for them. Please advise your friend to complete his/her MS and try as much as possible to get some internship positions before graduation.

Alaska is one of the largest oil producing state in the USA second to Texas, Alaska has been in the news right from the Exxon Valdez saga in the 80's, that is similar in nature to the recent BP spill in the Gulf oil Mexico. Below are the top 6 oil producing states in the US;

TEXAS, ALASKA, CALIFORNIA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEW MEXICO and OKLAHOMA

TEXAS is first because of the Gulf of Mexico deep water exploration, production, appraisal and development. It is projected that North Dakota will move to the 1st or second position in few years because of its reserves.

Did you just call me oil guru? No oooo..... grin.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part3 by OjaP: 5:59pm On Feb 06, 2013
Rickywowoz: you are right buddy,i read about the north dakota boom but i wanted to confirm from you guys that are there already,as u knw internet dnt always paint the picture of the real situation..
Yes, that is North Dakota for you grin.

Please be warned that admission into the only 2 geology graduate schools in North Dakota is now very competitive. Reason being that those schools now enjoy generous donations and fundings from the oil companies and even the state government since the oil boom. Many grad students get alot of funding in the form of tuition waiver, RA, TA and even internships and/or placements. Of interest is that more than 60 percent of ND revenue comes from Oil.

The only two geology graduate schools in the state are;

North Dakota State University, Fargo.
University of North Dakota.

I don't know much about the petroleum engineering programs in those schools but you can check to see if they offer a M.S in Pet. Eng.

Note: While applying to those schools, please have a high GRE score, good recommendations, reserach/work experience and a very well written SOP. Don't ask me why.....grin
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part3 by OjaP: 5:13pm On Feb 06, 2013
imperiouxx: Since petroleum is confined to locations, cancel out NM and ND. Your best bet is to stay TX or CA. If not, NM is good and cheap too. Only if you want to study mining then NM is the best. To study geology, all except ND is good. To study ice, ocean, polar bears, penguins, dolphins or whales then a semester in AL is good if you can endure far below freezing point of water.
Bros, North Dakota is the -ish now for Oil and Gas. North Dakota is near amazing geology, the oil boom in ND is no more news. The Bakken formation in the state contain up to 4.3 billion barrels of reserve.

Employment rate in ND is now less than 4.3% due to the oil boom. Geology or Petroleum Engineering grad students will have no problem interning with the local oil companies. This may eventually lead to a permanent job. Also, most of the oil companies there are constantly looking for contractors to work for them, this means experience for starters (grad students who are still in school).

University of Alaska Fairbanks has one of the best Petroleum Engineering program in the country, I think it is worth it to endure the cold, afterall I have friends who schooled there and didn't die of the extreme cold weather conditions.

And YES, you are all correct that California, Texas, Alaska and Loisianna are states where the oil money is, but please add North Dakota to the list. That is the reigning state now.
