Raiders: Hi folks, I am a silence follower of the thread..I am currently a F1 grad student in the States and I have been in the states since fall 2011; I will be graduating this Semester..I am planning to get marry to my African American girlfriend immediately I graduated and we don't plan on settling in Nigeria when we get marry so I am currently planning to change my status from F1 to Permanent Residence.. I heard the process of changing status to Permanent resident through marriage is long and stressful and A Nigerian I asked told me that I have to go back to Nigeria for my girlfriend to file for me..so I would like to know if anyone in this thread has experience in changing status from F1 to Permanent Resident that would advice me on the processes and procedure to change status to Permanent Resident..You are posting in the wrong thread, this is strictly for students seeking F-1 Visa. Nonetheless, I will try to answer your question. - You don't have to go back to Nigeria for your gf to file for you. You will simply be adjusting status from here (AoS). - You need to file forms I-130, 1485, 131 and I-765. - Gather all supporting documents that can show you are legally married and not for immigration purpose. I would love to explain more but this is not the right thread for that. The link below will explain further. http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.eb1d4c2a3e5b9ac89243c6a7543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=9c8aa6c515083210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=9c8aa6c515083210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD Goodluck!!!!! |
Yvete: Lolz ... You will not carry last just like Kpolli.I dey find work too ma. ![]() |
Yvete and RedReact: You guys are so on point. I strongly believe prospective applicants back home should by now know what life is here....it is definitely not as straight as a gun. The road to getting a H-1B is rough, that of getting a green card is rougher. Need I say more? May GOD help us all. |
I am a silent follower of the Canada thread and won't act as if I am ignorant of all that happened between Imperiouxx and the guy in question. What I have learned: - Many people just want to leave Nigeria by all means. - Most people get US visa without even knowing what their short/long term goal is. - Many people want to come to the USA because they hear life is good in the USA. - Many people come here purposely because of the green card. Like I have always been saying, there is more to you getting the 2 years Visa. What one's plan should be is getting a good job upon graduation which could possibly be a direct path to becoming a permanent resident. I honestly understand where "that guy" on the Canadian thread was coming from. We all have different plans and strategies. Who knows, maybe going to Canada will be the best for him later in life. With the way/manner he highlighted his points about the H1B and PR, he seems to know what he wants and going for it. I wouldn't blame him on that, life is all about choice. His fault: I wasn't expecting him to tackle Imperiouxx the way he did. That shows that human beings atimes could be ungrateful...I am not surprised anyways. This dude forgot this thread ever since he got his Visa and his next post was on the Canadian thread asking how he could transfer to Canada...SmH. I will only tell Imperiouxx to ignore him and not let that bother him at all. Such is life jare. |
Yvete: OjaP: Please help his cousin just like others helped MamacitaHonestly, I don't even know what to say. Should we just assume the "cousin" have been playing for 8yrs and just think this is the best time to seek a degree, not even in Nigeria but in the US? He/she has no NCE, OND or HND? That 8yrs is more than enough for some brilliant chaps to get BS, MS and even PhD. Smithjanetstore: Please tell us in details what your cousin has been doing from 2005-2013. I don't think any one here can help you come up with anything. We can only help in polishing it. BTW, don't tell us your cousin went for computer training oooo..That one no dey sell again sir. Even at that, na for 8yrs the training go come be? So, what do we do now Oga Smith? |
ferdimako: Nobody wants to be tagged harsh or over-sabi...English Language is not our mother tongue after all. But if you are somewhat polished with it at the Embassy, you can convince your interviewer. Taking the tests for higher scores doesn't mean, you will communicate effectively that day ooo. Well she should do her home work and take things seriously and not personally.10000000000000 likes |
smithjanetstore: @seunolumonday it seems you want us to come up with different stories why cant u make use of OjaP Advise (mr harsh man) Plan on taking another TOEFL, study very hard for it and score high. Also, take the GMAT or GRE as the case maybe and get good scores too. These will undoubtedly boost your chances. Again, don't take this personal please, I am only keeping it 100%.Hahahaha, you are too funny @ bolded. Abegii oooo. |
olarwarlay: @OjaP - Lemme act as an ets official hereHahaha, bros abegiiii oooo.....no dey carry me join body jare. Na your footsteps I dey follow na. Thanx anyways. Yvete: Did you notice anything in common between this poster and I ? Shh!!!!! don't loud it? ![]() |
Yvete: OjaP: Hehee ... good job in keeping in it 100. The beach in Beijing got me laughing. That VO don't play. I remember a guy wrote that he's got a "precious toefl result with score 45". SMHThanx ma'am...lol. I think the VO wanted her to explain more what she went to China for but she missed the opportunity. I can come up with a thousand and one points/reasons if I was asked that question - even when I haven't stepped into any Chinese embassy before. ***It is always good to read*** Madam, better stay off campus for 1 week. Those Asian guys could be crazy ooooo....lol. Stay safe!!!!! |
bigfrancis21: Problems? *Scratching my head*P.O Box address also works. |
seunolumonday: D first time guess I didn't have eye contact with the vo,d second interview I forgot my wedding picture at home, den d third interview d vo dat interviewed me d second time called my number again so he told me he won't be able 2 interview me dis time so he passed me 2 his collegue and d interview was good until he asked me abt my china visa he asked me where I went 2 in china I told him benginn he said wat did I go and doi told him shopping,he said only shopping I told him I went 2 d museum he was still not contented he wanted more so I lied I went 2 d beach,he just said dere was no beach in beginn could have sticked 2 shopping.but now am goin for a student visa interviewFirst, I won't give you a visa too if all you could tell me about China was to go shopping, go to the beach and museum. In whatever you do, you have to be so smart and think fast. Yes, you could go to anywhere in the world to chill or even gamble if you have the money but if in front of an American V.O, polish all those things and make it sound very interesting to hear. Second, you went for an interview and forgot your previous visas and any other docs that could show OR convince the V.O that you have strong ties to Nigeria at home? And you think HE/SHE would take you serious? I don't think so. A simple analogy is a potential employee who forgot his/her resume when going for a job interview, what does that tell the employer? That said, you graduated with a CGPA of 3.48 which is almost a 2.1 from a university in Nigeria and got a score of 58 in TOEFL? I refuse to believe that. Nobody will give you a visa with that low score, the interviewer may even ask if you took any English class or wrote a thesis at all. Secondary school students score nothing less than 75 in TOEFL exams and I see no reason why a university graduate shouldn't score more than that. [s]And let me tell you this, I am not perfect too or even near perfection when it comes to writing. But I believe that graduates who took English classes and also wrote a thesis/dissertation while in college should be able to atleast construct a simple sentence, make use of paragraphs, cross all T's, dot all I's and make sure whichever message he/she is trying to pass across flow logically. Obviously, we are all still learning and I don't want you to think I am too harsh but I sincerely hope you know that I am telling you the bitter truth which may eventually be of help to you if you work on those points I mentioned.[/s] Advise: Plan on taking another TOEFL, study very hard for it and score high. Also, take the GMAT or GRE as the case maybe and get good scores too. These will undoubtedly boost your chances. Again, don't take this personal please, I am only keeping it 100%. I wish you the very best in all you do. |
webstradamus: Good thing you've emailed them. There's not much you can do but wait for their response ...Do they reply emails? Just wondering. |
Hey Folks, Does anyone have any latest info about the STEM H-1B and Green card or DREAM ACT Bill? Boys are not smiling oooo......lol |
Yvete: Lol. Don't worry. I will not send thugs to Cali to "jack you up"!Lol...my weekend was fun. What about you? Hey, this will be the last time I will ask again if you are still busy again at work to do that stuff. ![]() |
Yvete:I dare not say that again ma, I have learned my lessons.....lol. I feel so uncomfortable not talking to you on here for real. This calls for celebration, let me now think of how I can get myself into trouble later tonight....#beautifulweekend #Yvetteforgivesme #sohappy #dancingazonto |
Yvette! Yvette!! Yvette!!! Why are you ignoring me? Did you see my email at all? Anyways, I hope you are still not angry because of our last "discussions" here. How is your weekend going? |
Imperiouxx: Is ata gigun not grinded dry pepper? Just curious. |
Anthonymighty: House. I'm flying soonest, I don't even know what to take along. Abeg which of our african food dey yankee and which one no dey so I can hold some o. I like garri o. And ata gingun. Shey those tins dey yankee? What of yam and beans. Ejo o...I can't eat burger and pizza with can coke oooo nyama! You will get everything you want in Houston, TEXAS. Which state is your school in? |
@FutureDon You are so correct...that is exactly how it works. But I think we should first of all be sure we meet the general requirements before applying or contacting a Prof. I am so sure Winbyforce would have done that during the admission process. A professor will only fight your case if you meet the general requirements or slightly below what they expect. Then, they may let you take some pre-requisites. But honestly, a GRE score of 309 will be less than 1200 (Old GRE). Most of these big schools want a score of over 1200 atleast and may be a higher quantitative score if you are applying to the engineering school. If I am not wrong, Nigeria's PhD grade is having a MS weighted average of atleast 60%. Winbyforce 67% average will prolly be within the range of 3.0 - 3.4 (US equivalent)which is a good average, but unfortunately doesn't look too good when applying to top schools. Though, most school's admission page will say a minimum of 3.0 but I can assure you that these schools have their pick of the best/brightest students. Most candidates that were accepted usually have a GPA within the range of 3.75-4.0 and a very high GRE scores. Remember you are competing with the best students all over the world. I will advise winbyforce to consider the "B" schools too when shortlisting PhD schools. I wish him the very best of luck. |
winbyforce: @OjaP, thanks a lot. Actually 67% by ibadan marking scheme is very good and is stated in the trancripts. However, i need to look for grade B schools to apply to since my entire package may not be so convincing by American standards.I agree with you. Try www.msinus.com to check out schools. |
winbyforce: @Isobutylene,congrats mehn! Can't say the same for me.I got a rejection from weill cornell pharmacology a few days back and haven't heard anything from albert einstein of yeshiva and stony brook pharmacology.Guess i didnt apply to the right schools. May be our friends on the yankee side of this thresd can be of help to me(advice). what second-rate biomedical schools can one apply to? is my GRE too low for doctoral admission?Sorry to hear about your case bro. It is so difficult to get into those IVY league schools/colleges of medicine. It is highly competitive, so they go for the brightest students especially when you are seeking a graduate degree. I will advise you talk to Imperriouxx, he is the only "metabolite" I know of here, and I believe he will be willing to advise you. I am also thinking an average of 67% and combined GRE of 309 may be too low to get an admission into any of these big schools. You may have to be relaxed with your choice of school. I wish you the best. |
bigfrancis21: Now the people attacking flynbird can start a new war.And the people are ready to disappoint you this time around. No one is going to ask about the school..........lol |
Ms Nas: Is it you or your cousin? OjaP answer him oSmith Janet: I don't even think it is necesaary to know if it is you or your cousin at this time. The school resume by August right? So, why do you need quick response? You still have up to 5 months to apply fo Visa. So how are 8 years gap: Do you want us to come up with a story when you haven't told us anything about your cousin before? What do you expect us to say or advice about someone who we don't know his highest qualifications or job? Give us a brief summary of what you or your cousin have been doing since 2005, then we can help you polish it. BTW, is this not the same SmithJanet that was fuming that flynbird didn't wanna disclose the name of her school? So, why are you now hiding the name of your cousin's school.... ![]() Congrats on your cousin's admission. ![]() |
Isobutylene: Yeah, thanks guys!!!...Though overall, UH ranks highest among the three but the truth is that the Professor in my field of expertise (Reaction Engineering) is an old man (his interest is closest to mine among all) and I need an Assistant Professor or at worst an Associate Professor. I don't want to be begging my advisor to review my manuscript before sending it to Journal for publication, in view of that, I need someone who is still VERY active in research! You are fine...America is not Nigeria where you will have to beg a professor or carry his/her bags before they attend to you. You should be happy you have a Prof with a lot of experience, who prolly is an emeritus, which technically means he has published the results of his several researches in reputable journals, has friends/colleagues in research institutions, highly connected and can recommend you for future jobs etc. I would personally go for the old Professor...Experience they say is the best teacher. |
Isobutylene: Hi guys,I really appreciate you guys for providing valuable information on this thread. Now, I need advice from guys already in the States. I have been admitted into the University of South Carolina, Lousiana State University and University of Houston for a graduate program (PhD), with full tuition waver and assistantship. Now, I would like to know the best of these 3 in terms of cost of living, life in general (i.e.boring or lively) and relaxation centers. I do not trust my findings on the internet so I need a first-hand information from my fellow Nigerians. Thanks in anticipation.Go Houston!!! Don't think twice. I will be back with my reasons later in the day. Congrats on your admission into those top US schools. |
I won't talk......lol. |
Yvette I sent you an email. Did you get it? |
olarwarlay: @OjaP - Yes, it's Arizona State Uni and I remember someone told Me about the harsh immigration laws. I changed my mind about the school immediately I learnt abt dat but do have it in mind to mention it to the VO that I applied there too. Maybe that could convince Him/Her that I am a serious applicant(and that's 'coz someone actually said earlier on the thread that she thinks the mention of ASU further convinced the VO to issue Her brother's visa). Don't mind Me, it's all about proving my application beyond reasonable doubts. Thanks Bro!Good you know about this on time. I am also happy I am not the only one talking about their immigration "wahala". It is okay to tell the VO you applied to many schools like you said, that will surely boost your chances. You are welcome sir!!! |
As much as I don't want to argue about this, I think I just need to chip this in. I never said ASU is a bad school in my earlier post - infact the school is one of the best in the world, and one of the top geological schools too. I only advised about the state of Arizona and didn't say anyone shouldn't go to any school he or she wants. I so much believe in planning ahead and not just rush into things. Okay, do you know that Arizona employers hardly or rarely sponsor H-1B Visa and Green card? Are you in doubt? Google it up please. Do you know the state herself is not friendly immigration-wise? Do you know it is so difficult for foreigners who even have papers to work to get jobs there? Do you know Arizona is a state where the level of racism is close to 80%? Do you know that you are out of status and illegal if after graduation you didn't get an OPT or better say your OPT expired and didn't get a company to sponsor (all because they discriminate)? So, what happens if the police stops you at that time and demands for your papers? Honestly, I just think what is worth doing at all, is worth doing excellently well. Also, remember he who fail to plan, plan to fail. Summary of my epistle is that look for a more friendly state to school. I never said ASU is bad. And please, don't hold me on this, it is just my own personal opinion. I wish you good luck. N:B - You may not fully understand all these until your 2 years Visa is near expiration and looking for a way forward. Newbies, take note!!!!! |
Why is she scared? I would be proud to be a Harvard applicant (even if dem no go accept me)....lol |
flynbird: They even reply my mails like they don't care and I just have to comply. Looks like they're not botheredHow about you drop the name of the school and let the gurus here check it out for you. Who even knows maybe it is one of those VIUs?? Even the A rated schools won't ask for a US address from an int'l applicant - atleast I know Penn state, Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, Duke, MIT etc don't ask for that. |
olarwarlay: Did you say reply your mails like they don't care?!!! See ba, imperiouxx and the other gurus in the house have spoken, just piss on the school. The fact that your friend introduced you to the school doesn't mean they are the best in the whole of the US. Take my VIU case for instance, my brother's friend introduced me to the school and i never knew i was on the wrong part till i joined this GREAT THREAD, it was a painful thing to do but i had to start from the scratch; did my own research and came up with good schools like LU,MSU and ASU. Now, all these schools send me emails almost every week 'coz they know they need me as a student, with LU even inviting me to Webinars which i have attended twice now. Cheap and good schools are out there, you just need not be lazy in doing your research.... Wish you luck Ma'am!!!Please and Please, if ASU (above-in bold)means Arizona State University, I will advise and even beg you to run away from the state of Arizona patapata. They are so harsh and rude when it comes to immigration. That is a state in the US where it is legal for a policeman to just stop a black man or any foreigner at random and ask for his/her papers. Any unsatisfactory explanation is subject to deportation straight. I will never advise my enemy to school there especially if he/she is a foreigner. |
