imperiouxx: From my interpretation, she means she's complicated.Isn't that synonymous to NRC . That said, did you watch "koto-aiye"? That epic yoruba movie? In the late 80s or early 90s? |
djunit1: My Advice to everyone looking for a place to live, look for apartments or rooms on craigslist but NEVER send money to any one until you get to the US and only pay after move in. And make sure you get receipt for the money you're payin.Half of the ads on Craiglist are from Nigeria scammers. You are so right on this Djunit. |
Cograts Flyinbird....Welcome to the land of the brave. I have a question for you. What is the meaning of flying bird in Yoruba? ![]() ![]() |
Ricky Rozay: Hahahahahahaha bro.. Green card ke..@ bolded: That's the koko . I wish you all the best bro. |
@ Ricky Congrats bro. Welcome to the land of the free and home of the brave. I see you living the American dream in a short while. So happy for you. As per the age you mentioned, you still fall within the age range for undergrad studies. A 30-35 year old applicant may not be as lucky as you are. One out of every 10 over-age applicants still get it though. |
Graham123: Sounds good, thanks. I'm thinking of Nursing actually but I'm still open to further options. With a bit more research and advice, I will make a decision soon.We can always discuss it here so others can learn from it too. I am open to talking privately too only if you have some private info you don't want to disclose in public. You know where and how to find me. |
Graham123: Thanks, you have been really helpful to start with. I stated earlier that my CGPA is 2.3 but I haven't converted through WES to the US equivalent although I strongly doubt if it will be above US 2.5 CGPA.Don't stress it, you will get an admission. First, send your transcript to WES for conversion. You should still be able to get a WES GPA within the range of 2.4 - 2.5. There are schools that will give you a "conditional" admission with that. If you have good grades in your senior years or 300-400L, then you should have a 2.5 GPA when converted. Most of the classes you take in your 100 and 200L carry lesser credit units. Again, what field are you switching to? Answer this and we will go from there. |
@ Graham I have two questions for you. - How do you know your third class is less than 2.5 US GPA? - Are you coming here for MS in Zoology or planning to change field? I won't advise you to come here and study Zoology unless you want to go further to PhD and be a professor. You may want to change your field entirely to what you think can sell in the US. That said, be warned that you may not get any scholarship or funding except a campus job if you are lucky. |
teejay_GO01:Hey, I am so sorry. I will call you this afternoon during my lunch. When are you coming? Check your email. |
@ Zynnie: Congratulations. I am so happy for you, I particularly like how you made the V.0 dance to your tune. ![]() |
zynnnie: Ladies and gentlemen, my visa was just approved now in lagos. It was magical. Details in few mins,I am so happy for you. Congratulations and wish you all the best. |
Ms Nas: @Fidelia.John just called me! She got her visa approved in Abuja!!! I'm so happppyyyy! Come share your experience girl!Congrats Fidelia...you deserve it. Welcome to the US. |
kingcobra2003: Goodmorning all. Thanks for all the helpful insights. I do believe that d sponsor is d problem, not the fact that i'm going to America to study law. I still say that I knw a lot of my colleagues out there studying. As a matter of fact. A law degree from these ivy league schools opens doors here in naija. I really do not want to practice in d US. All i wanted was to go for a nine month LLM prog. Anyway, i dont think its wise to change my sponsor now, it may raise a red flag as per inconsistency. Except I am going to get some cash into my account and be a self sponsored applicant. You may be right after all. Follow your mind bro...Goodluck. |
Is she fluent(not expecting big big grammer)? Is she outspoken? Can she write well? Efffff** the paper they call diploma. All these with "the fear of God", "good heart", "respect" and "beauty" is more than okay in the world of today. |
imperiouxx: Twale sir! you're respected. Well, an American lady friend (practicing lawyer) told me for her to relocate from her state to another within this same US, she will have to take another bar exam of the new state she's moving. You killed it!! Even if someone coming straight from Naija is allowed to practise, how do we cope in the court room with our thick accent, I doubt it if the Judge will even understand 30percent of what we are saying. That could mean a bad case, no clients, and ultimately no job. Well, some just become immigration lawyer and all they do for their clients is paper work for Green card and citizenship...that one too dey. If I really want to be an attorney in the US, I will go back to take some English and speech classes. It is so needed, unless I am never ever ready to appear in court. |
kingcobra2003: Wow! Sounds soo credible. Thanks @ojaP. Is it that there are no lawyers in the house? Everyone seems to be STEMI believe there are. But most people go for STEM not only because they are in high demand here but because the V.O respects you when you tell him/her you are going for MS/PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Thermal Physics, Clinical Biochemistry, All the Engineerings, Geosciences etc. Although, the US generally respects you if you tell them you are in medical school, law school or engineering school. Unfortunately, they don't think Nigerian visa applicants need to come waste money on LLM except maybe Int'l law because of so many reasons. 3 out of every 10 LLM applicants still get the Visa though. |
Why and How?? V.O: Why are you going to the US? You: For a Masters degree in LAW with concentration in International Law V.O: Why the school or Int'l Law? This is where you will force him/her to dance to your tune (Condense the reasons I gave below as much as you can so you won't spend more than 1min on it. Re-arrange these points and let them flow logically. I am only typing it as it comes to my brain) You: I hope to work with the United Nations, African Union etc after graduation. I have keen interest in the laws that govern the conduct of independent nations in their relationships with one another. The United Nations (U.N) role in economic development, enforcement of human rights, international security and ultimately the achievement of world peace is commendable and informed my decision to study International law. Studying law in Columbia will be a life experience rather than simply gaining a law degree. My English language skills will improve beyond all recognition because the world is becoming a global village and English is the language of communication. Thus, a Master’s degree in Law from Columbia with my proposed concentration in International law means I have an international work passport allowing me to communicate, negotiate and transact on behalf of clients, no matter where they are located. International law strategies demand lawyers with international skills and training - Your reason for choosing the US. My national and international clients would need both local and international advice. A graduate degree in Law from Columbia will set me on the right career path to fulfil these requirements as well as my personal ambitions. Change your concentration to Int'l Law. That is more reasonable and will justify your reason for coming to the US to study Law. Don't ask me how I know this, my kid sister is an Attorney. |
@ Kingcobra I knew you are not a STEM student immediately you posted you got denied. However, your answered the V.O's question intelligently and I must confess you really tried. The only red flag I noticed is the statement of account but there are several other factors which I think also affected you. Law schools here are very expensive, the Nigeria law system is so different to the US. Me and you know that Naija is British oriented. How will America Law degree be useful to you when you get back home after graduation? These maybe some of the things going on in the VO's head. Who knows? If I were you, I will force the V.O to dance to my tune. Want to know why and how? |
sholay2011: Pls just want to confirm. Why is it not advisable to apply to ivy league schools? I just discovered one of the schools I picked (Cornell University) is an ivy league school. Should I yank it off my list and look for another?Ivy League schools guarantee you atleast 70% success during the interview. That is if you are not 35years old and just going for undergraduate studies or going there for a Masters in Physical Education or Swimming. |
kingcobra2003: mehn, Ive been denied a US Visa o. I need help people, plss. I applied to Columbia University ranked 4th in the US. couldn't BELIEVE IT!Did you apply there as a STEM student? |
Espice: Thanks Oga GboyegaD.U'r one of d folks I respect here. Actually got no funding from Rice but NYIT I have a GA from NYIT. Please do you know about the school too?Just like Gboyega said, Rice is highly rated. NYIT is a private university just like Rice. A friend of mine who just graduated from the Energy Management department @ NYIT paid over $8k per semester. Another old member here who studied environmental technology graduated from the school. If I am correct, you prolly had paid some hundreds of dollars....$500 ? (NON-REFUNDABLE) which goes into your tuition before NYIT sent your I-20. Only you can do the maths and choose the one you think will pay you at the end. Will you be at the Old Westbury campus or Manhattan? |
Congrats Obsy.......Welcome to the United States. You will surely enjoy Petroleum Geology. |
Chibuhealth: To me oo, d guy went too far. He shuld av letf matter for mathias. As he pour them d acid now, two things are involved, 1. D guy must face court 2. He don lose d girl. But my people, why on earth will i pour my bf acid bcoz of a girl? African mentality! Gosh!@ bolded : A white American boy will definitely shoot both of them. Will you call that American mentality? |
zynnnie: am so sorry if i hurt you, not intended at all. Am very good at Finding loop holes, is a talent. I may not be of help with solution but i will point out the holes for the gurus to fill in.Wow!! humility at its peak. I am so sure she learned one or two things from you too. I like the way you handled this. |
MsSantaClaus: Sometimes, tough criticism is required! The Visa Officers have no time for sentiment. If you come here for advice, you have to be ready for the truth so as not to be misguided . If I was a visa officer I would honestly wonder if this person is a serious student at all or just wants to go to the US and continue moving from school to school and maybe become an easily influenced person (think of the Boston Bomber ) the devil has work for idle minds! Having traveled as a child is not the same as being an adult, in the first instance your parents are responsible for you and your actions, as an undergraduate student you are more or less responsible for your own actions. This is what the VO will consider. Your reasons for moving from two schools will not be private when it comes to the interview and if the reasons are not good enough to satisfy the VO, then, I don't need to say more..You have good points. I want to believe she won't tell the V.O she went to two schools but one. She only confided in us and who knows maybe she left her first school due to cultism or harassment - you never can tell. Who also knows maybe she is even a diploma student in UNILAG or not given the course she wants to study. Several factors may had influenced her decision into considering the U.S.A. These are mere assumptions from me, and I won't want anyone to think this is exactly what happened. Again, you have good points and I salute your intelligence. At the same time, I believe she can go get another milk instead of crying over a spilled one. I think the way forward is what we should show her. Normally, I don't respond to this type of question on here but something just tells me this may not be her fault after all hence my reply to her. I also believe she would have learned one or two things from what you guys posted. Destructive criticism is different from a constructive one. You sure have shown maturity in handling this matter. Thank you and God bless. |
zynnnie: am not a guru on here but you sound unserious and highly distracted. Two opportunities in the finest school down here and you can't graduate, you need sth very authentic other than your frequent travelling experience as a reason for wanting to continue abroad.Take it easy bro. You don't know her or what she is facing. Don't jump into conclusion please. All you should have done is profer a solution and let the rest slide. You're a man. |
misstoyo: Hey fellow Nairalanders...I have been following this thread silently for a long time now. Well my interview date is next month and I need some advice.Your answer: Count the number of times ASUU had gone on strike between 2008 to 2005 + UNILAG internal strikes. Then, tell the V.O you don't want to spend 10yrs in college hence your reason for applying to US schools where they have a stable system. Let him know that ASUU is presently on strike as you are talking. Pray the strike will still be on whenever you're going for your interview. This may be your best joker. #Apologies to my Naija students ![]() N:B - If the issue of private universities come up, tell the V.O you don't want to settle for less. You want a quality education as well and believe the US degree is widely respected and accepted all over the world. #Apologies to my Naija private university folks... ![]() |
GboyegaD: I swear I for like return real quick as the cost of living here is so high. Hope you get my naija number shaYou are so right my brother. I spent more than what I budgeted for my 10day trip. It was fun though. |
vivysparkles: Imperiouxxx don't worry, my school is in miami so one of dese days I shall invite u over for a trip to both d miami and Tampa beach.Imperiouxx, see as GOD just butter your bread... ![]() |
imperiouxx: The sweetest way to live this life to fullest is being good to everyone..... irrespective of status, level or experience.Very, good, sharp, badt guy..........Why won't you forget me when you prolly will be dancing to KC's Limpopo with the girl. ![]() |
Olatomide: Visa was granted in lagos. Interview was slated for 7:30am, didn't get in till around past 10. The VO at window 1 was denying virtually everyone, prayed he shouldn't attend to me, alas my number popped up. He questioned me on everything possible and checked each document, in the end I was granted. Headed to UTD for my graduate studies in Geology. Sorry it aint explicit.Congrats Ola. Welcome to the geology world. Don't forget to attend the Black Geoscientists Int'l convention in Houston come September please. Share your interview experience in details too. Congrats again. |
Ms Nas:Anything, anything for you. ![]() |
