olsmade: lolz. about finaid, yeah. i'll prolly have to mail BU - didnt think bout it before though. i have heard about the evening classes in some programs, but im sure it will make very little difference for an international student except ofcourse I want to do observerships during the day - RA or GA positions for international students have a 20hr cap per week. im leaning towards UT, Houston cos of the tuition and hope to get stipends which will then qualify me for instate tuition - daylight robbery. I did GRE way back in 2011 - twasnt so bad.
I bet it, 24hrs won't be enough for you again even with a 20hr weekly job on campus. Don't ask me why...I don't know....lol. That is just what I have experienced.

Find out:

Most graduate classes are in the evening. I used to go to school in the morning back then only because I am a RA and need to work on my research, most if not all my classes start at 6pm.

Most graduate students in America have one job or the other......that I think is the reason why most classes are in the evening.

Or you mean advising someone on direct PhD is discouraging the person? or given address the school and breakdown of the program is what you called discouragement?. Moreover, I don't see what you wrote up there as an advice or encouragement rather than another begin of havoc and controversy. Take note abeg ma'am.

Yvete: Hahaha!! I tried to get an MBA in Global Energy Mgmt 2 yrs ago just cos' it sounds good..lol, and got discouraged because of the Almighty GMAT. I'm a total id.iot when it comes to Maths. Quit and went to field of practical Technology. Same way my Dad pressures me to round up this Masters. I'm sure its so that he can brag about it. grin grin grin Now I've got Law School in mind because my whole life, I've been told that I'll make an excellent Attorney so ... lemme take a shot at it! cheesy cheesy cheesy

I got my first job offer with KPMG in a senior year of college. Entry-level job with decent salary. I think most companies esp MNCs want to 'catch them young' and also grad students right out of college.

What is a 2:1 and 2:2 equivalent to? I mean in US GPA system?
You are so on point. I want to pursue a PhD too because my father wants his son to be a PhD holder, and also because peeps back home are over-educated. More than 80% of my friends are currently working on their PhD. I actually gained admission to two PhD schools but had to defer because I will never quit my job for full research. I am still talking to one of them to see if it will be possible for them to collaborate with my company and work from here..maybe I can just report to my Professor once a month, I know its doable....lol.

Yes, most companies like "fresh bloods", and if looking for experience, go for Masters + experience/ some go for bachelors + plenty years of experience (depending on the company).

2:1 is equivalent to a minimum of 3.0 USA GPA
2.2 ranges from 2.5 to 2.9

Some strong 2.2 can make 3.0 US equivalent if converted by WES. grin

Yvette:

Yes, I agree with you. Masters is all you need here to get a job unless you want to be a researcher or work in research based institutions. The 3-5 years dedicated for a PhD can be used to gather years of experience under your belt since "experience is the best teacher" especially in America.

And NO, peeps with 2.1 or even 2.2 from Nigeria get into PhD program straight with their BS from Naija.

P:S - I hope to get a doctorate degree soonest though not because it will make me sellable but because I just want to be a PhD holder........lol.

smartmachine: hello peeps
i have got one question to ask here

what US universities can i apply to for masters degree in geology with my second class lower degree from OAU Ile Ife. i have applied to 2 different universities (university of kentucky and Oklahoma state university) and they both did not admit me REASON: LOW CGPA. please, what schools can be able to admit me with a 2nd class lower degree or what schools can i meet up with their requirements with 2nd class lower degree so as to facilitate my quest. i have taken my GRE and TOEFl and i passed them well, but my TOEFL will expire by january ending. so please i need a school that can admit me against spring 2013. i need your help pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese.

please anyone with useful information should inbox me @ hpacerlad1111@gmail.com
I am always happy whenever I see Geologists on here. There are many schools who will admit you for masters. I will only advise you not to submit your original transcript from OAU to the school. Instead, submit an evaluated one from WES, don't ask me why. The schools convert rubbish.....lol, all they do is simple maths and not evaluate the transcript course by course.

What is your GRE score? Well, a score of 1000 is fine. Most schools do not have the Petroleum Geology option, you may want to watch out for that. Abi na Hydrogeology you wan do?.....lol. California State University Northridge, Sacramento State University and City University of Newyork, City college will all give you a conditional admission with your 2.2 and a GRE of 1000. I have more schools to give if you want. Goodluck.

CareerRe: Self-Employment vs Oil Company Job: Which is Better? by OjaP: 5:02pm On Apr 06, 2012
tanimola22: Unless you have good capital, novel ideas and something to fall back on, I would advise that you quickly jump at the oil job. Many people know how to say this and that; it is easier said. However, the actual test comes when one is faced with a very nice offer from an oil company. Not many people can resist the strong temptation.

I used to know one guy who claimed he would never work for anybody but himself. He was a year into his personal company when he suddenly got an offer from one of the major MNOCs, not even Total sef. The funny dude just abandoned his business and jumped at the oil company's offer. This was a dude that earlier made so much mouth about self-employment and even inspired very many people in the process. A lot of people, including yours sincerely, were astonished and disappointed in the guy.

Another one was a guy who was lured into resigning his bank job for the purpose of starting his own business and being self-employed. This guy foolishly harkened what he was told without even thinking about the risk involved. He never thought of what might happen if his business didn't go well. After 6 months of starting the business using 'all' the money he had, the business crashed! Today the guy is looking for whom to give him another paid employment. Unfortunately, paid employment does not come easily anymore. The person who encouraged him to resign his bank job and pursue self-employment has 'benjohnsined'. He has neglected him. Remember the song: when yawa dey for you everybody benjohnsin, dem go dey lie dem no no u again. This is the pathetic situation the guy has found himself.

I am not against being self-employed, in fact that is my ultimate plan. What I am saying is that, in the process of trying to be self-employed, one should have something to fall back on. It is a common knowledge that being an entrepreneur is not always rosy. What happens if things don't go well? This is the question we need to ask ourselves before going the self-employment route.

For me, I can never quit a paid employment unless I am sure that my family and I will survive for 5-6 straight years without any struggles. This is what I call having something to fall back on, just in case things don't look too well in the first few years of self-employment.

This is my take sha.

T22
@ tanimola22

Major oil companies always advertise any job openings. Before anybody could be called for an interview or offered a job, I assume he/she submitted a resume showing interest in the job advertised. Did your friend follow this normal procedure before he was offered the job? If yes, why did he initially apply for the job when he knew he will never work under anybody?

I don't believe your story sir.

@ Kaycome,

If "evaluation is in progress",then you don't need to send them anything again. It usually takes 5-7 days for them to complete it. You should get an email to that effect from them.

You may want to check your inbox or spam folder to verify that. I will be sending you an email shortly.
