This part is mostly true and is the part I always struggle to understand. That homesickness becomes very strong when they start getting close to retirement age. I learnt of a couple of young guys who left Shell Warri back in the 90s as young engineers to that same Canada and US when the craze wasn't even that much. Many of them have started returning, some of them their wife's don divorce them after they don train children finish and almost finish paying mortgage . Now their counterpart that stayed back in that same shell have become managers in their respective departments, some have gone and come back from various cross posting in various Shell global offices, of course some lost their jobs, some don die, some non grow. Lazyyouth4u: I agree. 100%.
If you see big man wey dey try japa by fire by force, they are running away from something. We also get some wealthy young people wey dey play for the other team and are trying to escape to country where they can play ball well without the risk of spending 10 years for jail
What many people hustling abroad don’t say is that they are homesick and tired and long to return home and settle down. Na fear of the unknown and uncertainty around jobs and finances dey keep them abroad. |

All these are all excuses. Many multinationals do reward system and some form of performance based promotion yet the Nigerian in Nigerians still finds a way to show up. If the excuses you are giving there is true, why do Nigerians still find way to try to beat the system when they travel abroad. maishai: its not only about the money or salary, how are people recognised and celebrated in the society.............Take a look around all you see is everyone basking in how much money they have gotten.........There are no master doctors, lawyers , footballers, stock traders, technicians, even no master street sweepers, everybody is just focused on getting richer........
when one watches the way developed societies solve problems you cant help but admire the genuine commitment they put forward in trying to get solutions, you can never get that if all one works for is just for the next payday, this is why there is so much theft and plifering in the country
There are no recognised and celebrated doctors, lawyers, teachers, bankers, hairdressers, fashoin dezigners........ There are no recognized and celebrated master crafts men in the country for younger generations to look up to.........
Many of the positions Nigerians loose to expertraites are just for no other reason than TRUST, while the expertriate is working towards building a name for himself, the Nigerian is just working for the money, so tell me if I am paid 800k a month to be in charge of a process that consumes 15 trucks of diesel a day and i discover a way to make it consume only 13 trucks of diesel a day why should i report this discovery to higher management If all I look forward to is just my salary |

How you de take do this one? ositadiima1:

I noticed something sha, but then their could be a bug in my calculations.
Don't know if you have heard of Mean Reversion, simply put, it assumes that if the price of a stuck deviates from its established mean value, it tends to return to its mean.
I wrote a small program that applied a version of this reasoning to our stock market data and it was profitable. Actually, I have two sets of data, one collected from investing dot com, running from 2012 to date and the other, I personally collected it from morgan daily price list correspondence, both were profitable.
The strategy is simple, and here it is:
I buy the five worst performing stocks(in terms of returns) of the last month, on the first of present month and sell on the last day of the month. I buy equal weight, that is if I am playing with 1 mill for example, I distribute 200k to each stock in d portfolio.
Very simple strategy, though it requires some amount of computing in other to scan through all 155 stock every month.

Apart from the Banana Island, 48 million naira PA can do all the others you listed if you continue to work in such a place. The only time it seems not to be enough is when you assume the man will not keep working at that place after one year. 4m a month puts you in bigger boy status. Statements like needing more than 4m to be a big boy is one of the things that drives greed and leads to a lot more stealing in Nigeria. Lazyyouth4u:

N48m is not enough to buy a house on Banana Island, send all your children abroad for secondary and university studies, fly first class and business class with your family members on vacations, maintain all the numerous money grabbing side chicks and oloshos, buy the latest Benz and Range Rover cars, care for illegitimate children, etc.
You need much more than 4m per month to be a big boy in Naija and that’s why they are still greedy for more and more money. By hook or by crook |

Nigerians just like stealing as if it is in their DNA. I know for a fact that Shell and many IOC having various reward system in place plus they are well paid, yet any small loop hole to steal many do not hesitate. maishai: My brother we Africans should find a way of appraising the grain grinders in our midst, In every organization I have been to and worked this attitude is rampant, when one looks into Europe and the developed world, they are littered with all sorts of award and recognition that all manner of workers aspire to other than money,
I'm not condoning theft and pilfering in any form but when workers aspire only for the monthly pay or money only, I want to believe this kind of thing results
If one checks out many factories and production facilities in the country, we see capacity utilization of less than 35% meanwhile same facility in Europe gives more than 85% capacity utilization, it's not really so much about the knowledge gap but that the developed world rewards individuals for productivity as opposed to in Africa where colleagues look down on those that are hard working as fools |
Jobs/Vacancies › Re: My Experience With A Kind Staff At Nspri by ojesymsym: 8:09am On Dec 11, 2020 |
What advise did they have for you with regards to agricultural processing? bilms: *My experience with a kind staff at Nspri*
In my continued quest to understand the process of value addition in agro products and other consumables, I was directed to Nigeria Stored Product Research Institute (NSPRI) along Asadam road, Ilorin.
Based on my past experience with government offices, I decided not to go there in the morning to avoid unnecessary delay that may affect other businesses.
On Tuesday, 8th December 2020, I went to Nspri in the afternoon, precisely around 3pm or there about.
As I arrived at the entrance, i saw a massive space, with different huge structures, starting with the e-library.
The security officials were warm and one of them attended to me very nicely, ushering me in to park in the appropriate place.
Then, I was registered in and directed to the reception for my inquiry.
Upon getting to the reception, I met two pretty ladies, both of whom listened to me very attentively and without wasting any time, I was directed to the Agric extension office. When i informed them that I do not know the location, one of the ladies walked with me until she can site the extension office building from afar.
She pointed me to the office and wished me well.
At the extension office extrance, I met a deligent woman, who goes by the name, Mrs Olahan.
Mrs Olahan is fair and compassionate, caring and understanding, civil and customer friendly and most importantly, she's very respectful.
When she met me at the entrance of the building, she slowed down to ask what I was looking for.
After I explained my mission to her, she said I had probably been directed to a wrong place, because from what I said, I was supposed to be directed to the laboratory.
She directed me to the appropriate place, but when she realized that i had walked down to the extension office from another part of the space, she asked me to hold on a little so she can take me to the lab in her own vehicle.
We went to her car and she drove me down as promised. As we got to the place, she pointed me to the building and drove away.
It was before she drove off that I asked for her name, which she simply gave as Olahan. Mrs Olahan.
I eventually made my inquiry and left the environment.
As I reflected over this experience, it occurred to me that we have over generalized the attitude of civil servant in the country.
While many are quick to talk about their bitter experiences, hardly do people talk about their sweet experiences aswell. Especially, experience with people like Mrs Olahan.
Negative stories are good, they sell fast like garri. But good stories are better, far better than indomie.
I am therefore using this opportunity to thank Mrs Olahan for her kind gesture to me, during my visit to her office. More civil servants should be like her.

Dexter, I think you should really heed the advice here. There is a reason why even first class graduate can be put under third class graduates who have lot of hours of real life experiences. School teaches you controlled or ideal environment scenarios, real world is very erratic and need a lot of skills to navigate. While the modelling of different scenarios that good education provides is very useful, nothing beats real experience. As the number of years on a job begins to increase, it will be assumed you have seen, experienced or heard of different situations and learnt how those situations were dealt with. You do owe the CBN governor an apology for some of the direct insults on his person, when holding such a position, you usually have to juggle with a lot of things many of which are not textbook scenario and even more outside your control. Moreover he is a senior colleague to you. However, there is some positives to your attitude, you probably are someone who wants to be better or the best, that means your mindset is a good one that should be channeled properly. Do not forget that first class law graduates still have to go to law school, even then they do not become SAN or start handling serious cases in the court room immediately, e get y. Lazyyouth4u: No you don’t need to be 20 or 30 years but an entry level guy does not give financial advice. You know absolutely nothing at that level. You don’t go to meetings and you don’t speak to clients. If you are brought in to take notes, you are warned to keep your damn mouth shut.
Please don’t deceive yourself. You are not in cruise control after two years. You will only be in cruise control after at least 10 years in the industry as then you would have had the chance to learn from more experienced people. You would have also failed and learnt from those failures.
Boy, give yourself a slap for comparing yourself to the CBN governor and speaking condescendingly about people who are more experienced in life and in their professions than you will ever be.
By the way, how are you always here during working hours if you truly have found a job? Rookies are dumped with busy work and sent on errands all the time.
No need to shalaye with your shalayeing epistles again o. They will still come back to bite you tomorrow. |

I think you really have a strong bias against the stock market in general and NSE in particular. For me the inefficiency of the NSE is already factored in. I have also noticed that your view of the stock market is more from the option of trading, I personally know that is a lot more risky. Except I am missing it, there is also those who just want somewhere to put their money and start getting an income from it without the rigors of doing any physical work from it. You did reference that when you said the value invested can devalue, a case in point to buttress your point will be Oando that sold at 200+ a few years ago and presently playing around 10. That is why I like oga Ema's strategy of following any news that involves a company you have investment with even if you are a dividends hunter. Oando for example did not just go from 200+ to 10+ in 1 month, so if you are watching your investment, you could have sold at say $120 or more. However, you do have a point in playing the devil's advocate so that folks do not start seeing it as a direct replacement of TB that is guaranteed to return your capital, the stock market offers no guarantees. So anyone interested in the stock market should read the optimistic views of oga Ema, Ukay and the cautious (not wanting to use pessimistic) view of lazyyouth and use that as a form of guide. Lazyyouth4u: The stock market is very volatile. Any kind of bad news quickly hits the markets. Fixed income and real estate markets are more resilient. It would take very bad news like the COVID pandemic or the global financial crisis of 2007, etc to hit all securities.
Holding stocks long term may yield the highest long term returns. But it is certainly not the safest form of investments. It is the riskiest! You can never ever sleep well at night keeping your 500m life savings in the stock market. Talk less of the NSE. My Oga, that’s the easiest way to get high blood pressure. |

The funds they are talking about, is it the ones housed by Stanbic and other pension houses or the pension for government workers? What I think, everyone should also have a retirement plan outside of their workplace. Donbrig: I pray and hope so, just that it is heartbreaking to see these retirees living in abject poverty after serving Nigeria for over 30ryrs. Many had retired before realising that all the money they were paying into their retirement accounts had entered voice mail. The situation of many of our pensioneers are the most pathetic in Nigeria. They have paid their dues already, unlike many of our youths who are yet to even add anything tangible to national growth.
Now that our governors are bent in borrowing more from pension funds, we really have to tighten all loopholes and secure those funds and give our ageing and retired parents a relaxed and comfortable retirement and life before they join our ancestors. |
