Genius100: This thread defintely confirms my suspicions that Nigerians do not do their due diligence.Well, it's not only Nigerians, most humans do not do their due diligence. It is more constly in a country like Nigeria because there are so many dishonest people with sweet mouth..

Personally, I've not lost in any business I ventured into.. Run a consulting firm on the side right now and it's profitable...
A lot of people do due diligence the problem is alternative planning and getting lost in your contingency planning without loosing sight of the initial plan, and assess to long term financing which in actual fact is the main issue communication business takes time to grow and returns are attached to the personality of the individual, but with a limit to which the individual can spread him/herself delegation to other people become necessary but it still remains challenging because its your dream not theirs, so not derailing its not easy to go into business and stay in business in nigeria O! Their are so many mistakes you would make that only on the job experience can teach you not to take those kinda of actions again.

publisher: In 2009,while still working in a private financial institution,i launched my own magazine. Invested over N2m on the project, hired some old classmates to run it for me...well as expected, they ran it aground. I even lost my rented office space ,cos the landlady went psychotic on rents.
After i resigned from paid employment early 2010,i moved into my media bizness full time. I'm a trained brand innovator and copywriter. I sacked ALL my staff(5 of em) retaining only my PA. We are into advertising; creation/production of tv commercials, radio jingles and newspaper ads. It's a terrible industry cos most big Nigerian companies already have established ad agencies, others prefer to use foreign South African ad agencies. When they give independents like us an opportunity to pitch an ad,they complain that our idea is good but too expensive. But when a white South African team presents a silly ad pitch,to be shot in Cape town, ten times more expensive than ours, the big Nigerian companies jump at it. Thats why most so called quality tv ads aired in nigeria are shot in South Africa or Kenya, they use mainly zimbabwean cast cos their accent is similar to ours. They go a step further to teach them pidgin and clothe them with Nigerian attires just to create a Nigerian setting. Ref: Airtel 'IK' 10/10, Golden Penny, Etisalat, Indomine(mama too good),Blueband, Cowbell and so on.
Luckily,i've landed a decent ad deal with an upcoming food seasoning company,to be honest i only got the break cos the chairman of the coy is my 'towns man'. Positive tribalism i guess!
I love advertising, especially tv ads,i watch many foreign tv stations just to see their ads. But unfortunately 90 percent of tv ads aired on Nigerian tv can be very irritating, the 'descent' ones are SA productions.
I'ld like to change that and make Nigerian tv ads more Nigerian, more creative and more entertaining.
Advertising is a passion driven creative industry,it's also very frustrating for independent agencies like mine and u could go months, even years without a single client. But ONE serious client can change ur life forever, especially if ur Ads affects ur clients turnover positively.
Well,that's my story. Nice thread.
Bros it were as if you were telling my story mine was crazy coz I left banking for it thought I had sealed a deal with an agency to carry all their concept design and brand packaging mehn naa so I go borrow money from bank to also bank it up BAM they were scrapped along with the whole parafinalia of the agency bank on my neck no biz coming well I learnt a valuable lesson don't rely on any agency or company to generate your market, second was out of crisis I started a Microfinance institution taking my small experience from banking into it mehn that when I realised 80% of the income were used to finance overheads mehn see debt, back I can go forward naa war added to my level of indebtedness - learnt never to start a biz out of desperation.

.

For the over 15 million residents of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial centre, expectation from the ongoing Blue-Line Rail Project on the Lagos-Badagry Express Road is to say the least, very high.

This is understandably so, given the relief the project on completion is expected to deliver to the mass of residents who daily commute on Okokomaiko-Mile 2, Alaba-Orile- National Arts Theater- CMS- Marina route.

The Blue-Line project is a 27-kilometre rail route from Okokomaiko to Marina being developed in phases, with Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) as supervisor, and Construction and Civil Engineering Corporation of China (CCECC) as contractors.

It is estimated that an average of 400,000 passengers would be lifted daily by the train which would run from Okokomaiko in Ojo Local Government Area of the state to Marina on Lagos Island with stops-over at Mile 2, Alaba, Orile-Iganmu and National Arts Theatre in a journey that will be faster, safer, reliable and efficient. It is designed to have a total of 12 stations. Currently receiving attention is the first phase of seven kilometres from Orile-Iganmu to Okokomaiko with about five stations

The project is coming with an added advantage of a reduced fare compared to what is currently being charged by unregulated commercial bus operators on that route. Beyond this, the rail line is equally conceived to encourage the use of public transport as a lot of vehicles would be taken off the road in what is expected to reduce the present level of emissions in the densely populated commercial city.

Interestingly, it is not only the commuters who are earnestly looking forward to the completion of the project. Thousands of unemployed youths would take their fair share from the commencement of operation of the scheme, as it is hoped over 8,000 job opportunities would be delivered to skilled and unskilled labour some of whom currently roam the streets of Lagos in frustration.

CityFile checks on Wednesday showed a steady progress of work on the track bridge at Orile-Iganmu end of Lagos-Badagry Express Road, which is simultaneously undergoing expansion from previous four lanes to 10.  Also, while construction works on the stop-over stations at Mile 2 and Alaba are reaching appreciable levels, that of Orile-Iganmu has almost been completed.

A source at the Lagos Ministry of Works and Infrastructure told CityFile that government was optimistic that the project would be delivered last quarter of 2012 or first quarter of 2013 if the contractor keeps the pace of work at the ongoing level.

At the recent inspection of the project, Babatunde Fashola, Lagos State governor, said it has moved from being a vision to a dream and is finally becoming a reality.

With the concrete pillars, the track bridge taking shape at Iganmu and other infrastructure being put in place by the contractor, Fashola is hopeful that the multi-billion naira project would be achieved.

Fashola, who was conducted round the project by Dayo Mobereola, managing director of the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA), said the concrete pillars being set up at Iganmu would hold the rail bed that will link the rail line to Iddo on its way to Okokomaiko. He added that with the completion of the first seven kilometres of the rail line, five stations would also have been completed, and in line with the terms of the contract, the concessionaires would be supplying the coaches for full operation.

“We have moved from vision to dreams and to reality. The project has taken off; the baby has been born, it is left for us to nurture it to adulthood. This is going to be the most impactful project this state has ever had. You can only imagine the number of people that will be employed, both directly and indirectly, when the project is finished. It will reduce travel time and all the stress associated with traffic will be removed. Lagosians will travel in comfort,” he said.

Shi Hongbing, deputy managing director of CCECC and project manager, said the pre-castings for the rail bridge have reached 80 percent completion, assuring that before 2012, the company would complete the rail from Mile 2 to the National Theatre.

Lekan Agboola, a vulcanizer at Orile, said government meant well by the project as it will help to combat the notorious traffic congestion in the state as well as reduce the cost of commuting.

Agboola is happy with the current pace of work in the area and believes that it may be completed in six months time.

Remi Ayegbokiki, a trader at the Orile Iron Market which was demolished due to the light rail project, lauded the state government for the project and also commended the commitment of the contractor.

Ayegbokiki, however, regretted their displacement from the market to a location that is very far from the metropolis which has adversely their business.

“This project, however, affected us so much because our market was demolished and we were relocated to somewhere along Badagry Road which is very far away from the metropolis. We spend over N10, 000 to transport one ton of steel from there to the urban area which is not good to the business. So, what we do is hang around here and wait for our customers. If government can provide another site that is closer to this place, it will be better for us,” he appealed.

Will this really work why can't the rail corporation have on board police that assist the ticket checking officers just in case someone doesn't pay and someone wants to climb the carriage, since some people do not value their lives well I have also forgotten we are in Nigeria where nothing can be done, just imagine a slight shift to the left and right no rails to support and BAM the person is underneath being grinded by the rails and in fact that could derail a train

youngies: ABEOKUTA – Ogun State Police Command has uncovered a shrine which allegedly belongs to ritualists and fraudsters in Ewualase Village, Ogijo, behind NNPC Mosinmi depot, in Sagamu Local Government Area of the state.

The new Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Ikemefunna Okoye, who conducted newsmen and his men round the shrine for on the-spot assessment yesterday said the discovery was made on Monday.

According him, the Ogijo Divisional Headquarters through high level intelligence gathering learnt about the shrine, the operations of the suspected ritualists and went into action.

He said: "I gave them directives and they swung action that eventually led to the arrest of two people at the shrine. For now all we can say is that they are using this place for either rituals or to defraud people or both".

Okoye assured that the Command would do thorough investigations on the activities of the suspects, adding that the two suspects arrested would be charged to court after completion of the investigations.

In a related development, the Command yesterday arrested an armed robber as well as recovered a snatched vehicle.

naptu2: I gather, from the briefing document, that they'll have proper terminals and stations with shops etc (renting out shops is one of the ways they want to make money from the project).

Furthermore, large sections of the rail line will be elevated, while the sections at ground level will have barriers, to prevent people from encroaching on the rail line (as it so often happens with the NRC lines).

I heard that the Abuja line is having funding issues. Apparently, the National Assembly believes that the project is too costly.
yea its having serious issues from what i heard though it hasn't been confirmed the bane of Nigerian society has entered there CORRUPTION, i also heard the contract was awarded to Turai Yar Adua wife of Umaru and that woman "sabi" pilfer money so they revoked it but could get the advanced payment of the $12 billion paid for the commencement of the project, well i also heard she came in with her technical partners these Chinese guys, i hope they are not the same guys that were awarded this contract, you need to see the nature of the job very ugly looking and it has been done in very funny phases some areas have been laid but i tell you if a serious rain should fall around it it would sweep off the stones and the rails the laid and i don't think they really had the shops things for rent in the picture very ugly looking though i was even thinking it would have made more sense to start and gradually expand the network their is this part where the trains are supposed to pass over cars like a carriage bridge but with the standard of work going on their and the nature of the materials they are using we are in for serious trouble its like they say fake substandard products it would have been a tourist attraction of some sort but mehn! i dey fear oh! guess i would take some pictures
