The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 6 Command, Mr. Jonathan Johnson, has expressed concern over the involvement of some policemen in criminal activities. Johnson, who stated this during his visit to Akwa Ibom State Police Command in Uyo on Tuesday, alleged that many Nigerian policemen were armed robbers and get killed on daily because of their involvement in various criminal activities. “If you investigate our men, you will discover some are armed robbers. We are not contented with what they have; we go to the road to extort money from people, engage in illegal business, and liaise with armed robbers”, he said, warning that any policemen caught in anti-social acts would be dismissed. The AIG added that “No criminal has lived in his criminality and never been caught. If you want to live in palava, you will die in palava”. He also accused police officers of selling arms and ammunition to criminals, aiding and abetting crime, turning cases upside down, conniving with suspects, and engaging in conspiracy. The police who did not spare the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Nigeria Police Force, said corruption was embedded in the unit. He accused police officers of giving information to hoodlums leading to the criminals killing their colleagues. http://metronaija.com/many-policemen-are-armed-robbers-gun-dealers-aig/ |

Members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Nasarawa were on Tuesday ordered to begin an indefinite strike over alleged lack of promotion and non-payment of their entitlements by the state government, a statement disclosed on Tuesday. The statement, which was jointly signed by Adamu Eladoga and Abdullahi Haruna, the state Chairman and Union Secretary respectively, said the union was forced to take the step over the issue of staff promotion and annual increment because government was not showing serious commitment to resolve it. Other issues raised in the statement included non- payment of leave and transport grants from 2010 as well as alleged under-payment of some staff salaries, amongst other demands. “We have met with the government on threeconsecutive occasions since May this year reminding them of the need to meet our demands but all attempts failed. “Having exhausted all avenues where local government workers’ demands can be ensured, the state executive council of the union was compelled to embark on a seven-day warning strike action that lapsed on August 5. “Accordingly, in view of the insensitivity of the state government to the local government workers’ demand, the SEC in session has approved with immediate effect an indefinite strike until the state government responded positively,” the statement read. The statement further enjoined local government workers to ignore anyone, who may want to lure them back to work, while they await further directive from the NULGE state secretariat. However, Malam Sani Yakubu, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, said the group declaring the strike was a factional arm of NULGE, which did not have the legal backing to take such action. “As far as the state government is concerned, NULGE in the state has no leadership and any group parading itself andeven calling for a strike is only trying to galvanise the local government workers and deceive them in order to achieve their selfishaim,” the commissioner said. He said the state government was studying some of the issues raised with a view to taking appropriate action that would better the lot of the workers. www.metronaija.com/nasarawa-local-government-workers-go-on-indefinite-strike/ |

I’m Not A Child- Osita Iheme Cries Out! Size, to Osita Iheme, the midget actor, is nothing; but image. The Nollywood actor popularly called Pawpaw frowned at people who see him as a small boy. Recently, in one of his interviews, Osita bemoaned the how people viewed him. He expressed his disappointment about people seeing him as a child, hear him, “If you are a child in a drama, in real life you are not a child. You don’t need to behave like a child. Yes, a lot of people mistake me for a child in real life, but that is their problem. I am not a child. I don’t think I look like a child. I don’t allow that to bother me because I am not seeing it. People can see me and take me as a child, but that person is not with his senses because from the way I dress, the way I look, I don’t think I am looking like a child. People can meet me at first and have a spontaneous reaction of seeing a child but when they sit down and look very well, they would understand that I am not a child.” Truly, will a child invest in real estate as Osita has done? Will a child have series of girls admiring him? Will a child go to a strip club to have his eyes filled with excitement and eventually go home with one of the hot dancers? A child will not do that, only Pawpaw can! http://metronaija.com/im-not-a-child-osita-iheme-cries-out/

The Federal Government has expressed its worry, over how the ongoing ASUU strike, has distorted academic calenders in the country’s universities. Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, speaking to State House correspondents, insisted that the FG was committed to a quick resolution of the crisis and was ready for “serious negotiations” with the university lecturers. Maku also pleaded with the students and their parents to be patient and show more understanding, as every effort was being put in place to remedy the situation. “The federal government has been far more worried than you think concerning the strike in tertiary institutions, because of the disruption of the school calendar and so government is concerned and very worried and since the onset of the strike government has been negotiating with ASUU through the Ministry of Labour and Productivity and the Ministry of Education,” Maku explained. “As at today we know that this negotiations are going on and it is our expectation that this strike will not get more protracted and that an understanding will be reached soon enough to enable our students return back to school. Government is very worried and concerned every time the school calendar is disrupted, it has its cost to the nation, particularly the idle time our children spend at home can lead to alot of social difficulties. “We don’t want school calendars to be disrupted and a lot of series of discussions have been going on and we believe we should record some progress soon enough for these schools to open and the Minister of Labour and education will be giving quarter briefing on the progress of these negotiation and I know that it has never cease. “So we are appealing to our people particularly parents and children of this nation to bear with us, to show more understanding and we pray that this type of strike will not re-occur, because the public school system suffers a lot of damage with the perennial strikes. The universities have been relatively stable since the advent of this Administration. The outraged strikes that we inherited we have tried to resolve them, and if you notice in the last two years there has not been a lot of strikes until this unfortunate one and I believe we will overcome it and in the end both parties will appreciate the need to keep the school calendar stable for the progress of our country. So government is working hard to ensure we reach an agreement to resolve this problem so that or schools can re-open.” http://metronaija.com/ASUU-strike-bear-with-us-federal-government-pleads-with-students-parents/ |
