The fight against Boko Haram in Borno State has led to the creation of youth volunteer groups popularly called ‘Civilian JTF’ but what most do not know is that these groups have girls and women in their fold. This development comes on the heels of reported cases of suspected Boko Haram members disguising as women or deploying women to help carry out their dastardly acts of terror. The girls and women, who are between the ages of 15 and 30, wield swords, daggers, knives, sticks among other crude weapons. They stop and search vehicles and pedestrians together with their male counterparts. About ten of such girls were seen along Shehu Laminu way, with five sighted at West End roundabout and more than 25 at various checkpoints mounted by the “civilian JTF” along Baga road. The ladies among the youth volunteers perform a body search of their womenfolk whenever a vehicle is stopped while the males check their men folk and after the vehicle is ‘certified’, the driver is giving the go-ahead to continue on his journey. It was observed that both private and commercial vehicles were subjected to these searches even as the checkpoints mounted by the youths far outnumber that by security operatives. A girl of about 17-years, who simply gave her name as Halima was seen around Ramat Square in Maiduguri metropolis, underscored the importance of having females among the ‘Civilian JTF’. “We joined the civilian JTF in order to be searching females. A woman can search any other woman anywhere and nobody can raise eyebrows,” she said. Putting up a brave front, Halima said she was not oblivious of the dangers of her involvement in the fight against insurgents because according to her, “Securing Maiduguri is now a collective responsibility, irrespective of age, gender or status; the safer the town, the better for all of us”. Another girl, who identified herself as Saratu, said she left her job as a salesgirl in order to partake in the routine patrol conducted by civilians. Pastor Tunde Bakare of Latter Rain Assembly has condemned the suspension of John and Love Kumuyi from the church. In A a recent interview with the SUN newspaper, he said “I personally did not see what they have done wrong. A man is entitled to his own authority in his own home.1st Peter Chapter 3. A wife should dress to please the husband and not the members of the church or public. It’s sheer wickedness to the couple, they should leave them to enjoy their honeymoon. They should not squeeze them to the modus operandi of a particular organization. I did not see anything wrong in the wedding. The bride was not naked or dressed inappropriately and the groom didn’t. Esther the queen was beautifully dressed in the bible to gain the king’s attention. They should not make mountain out of a molehill. I was in the Deeper Life Bible Church for five years and nobody compelled me to dress the way I dressed. My wife was with me in the church though we weren’t married then. She wears earrings and dresses nicely. All this talk about this couple should stop.” SOURCE- http://metronaija.com/they-did-nothing-wrong-pastor-tunde-bakare-condemns-suspension-of-john-love-kumuyi/ |
A 27-year-old man, Sulaimon Jimoh, has been tortured to death by a vigilance group at Ijora Badia, Lagos State. Metro learnt that the deceased was arrested by some members of the pan-Yoruba group, Oodua People's Congress, for allegedly stealing a BlackBerry phone and an undisclosed amount of money last Sunday. Mother of the deceased, Afusatu, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, said the OPC men tortured her son for three hours, flogging him with an iron rod and charms. She said, "That day, my son left the house around 5.30am to say his morning prayers at a nearby mosque. A few minutes later, I received a telephone call from a resident saying my son had been arrested by OPC men. "I went to Oniyinde OPC base and saw about eight men beating up my son. My son's hands were tied with a rope. I approached them and I pleaded that my son be released. "The leader said I should provide N70, 000 before he could be released. Because that day was a Sunday, there was no way I could come up with that amount of money. So I continued to plead but he refused. "I wanted to report the torture at the Ijora Police Station, but I was not sure if policemen would respond on time. I ran back home and I was able to raise N11, 000. I rushed back to the scene around 8.30am." Afusatu said when she got there, her son was almost unconscious. She said she pleaded with the OPC men to accept the N11, 000, which they did before releasing Sulaiman. She added that he died few minutes after returning home. She said, "Before he died, my son told me that the OPC used charms to flog him. He told me that he was framed up and denied stealing anything." Afusatu said her son's murder was one of OPC men's excesses in the area. She urged the police to curb the excesses of the vigilance group members. She said, "These OPC men are nothing but touts who extort money from innocent residents in the name of fighting crime. They have killed many youths in our area; I never knew they would kill my son one day. "My son was a driver with a fish trading company. He was an honest man." Metro learnt that the matter had been reported at Ijora Police Station and that policemen stormed the house where the deceased was tortured by OPC men. Police sources told our correspondent that many of the culprits ran away but an OPC member, Kola Oladipupo, and an occupant of the building, identified as Olumide, were arrested. Olumide, who claimed to be an Islamic cleric said, "One of my neighbours was shouting 'thief, thief' on that day. I and other neighbours apprehended the suspect. "We were told that he stole a BlackBerry phone and some money. After beating him, I called OPC men to arrest him. It was a few days later that police came and arrested me." Oladipupo said he only beat up the suspect but did not kill him. He identified the suspects at large as Muyibat's aka Iron Lady, Kayode and Yusuf. "Iron Lady was the one that gave us instruction to beat him (Sulaimon). She is our leader," he said. When contacted on the telephone, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation department, Yaba, for investigation. National Publicity Secretary, OPC, Mr. Sola Ajayi, said the suspects were not OPC members. "I am not aware of this development and those people are not our members because we do not behave in such a manner. We have a database of our members and they all have identity cards. If we get the details of the suspects, we will cross-check it with our data," he said. SOURCE- www.metronaija.com/opc-tortures-man-to-death-over-phonetheft/ |

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Tuesday night called off its three-day warning strike after a meeting with the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Andrew Yakubu. Announcing the suspension of the strike during a news conference, the NUPENG President, Achese Igwe said the decision to end the industrial action was for the interest of the public and the intervention of Mr Yakubu. Mr Igwe listed the major issues which had led to the warning strike to include the high level of insecurity in Nigeria, bad state of theroads, rising oil theft in the Niger Delta, non-adherence to guidelines on contract staffing/casualisation in the sector and abuse of expatriate quota. NUPENG on Monday directed all its membersat the depots to stop loading petroleum products for the next three days to protest the alleged inhuman treatment of its members by the management of Chevron, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and Agip Oil Company. The strike was also called to protest the refusal of Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to implement thesigned collective bargaining agreement with petroleum tanker drivers. Mr Igwe said if these issues are not quickly resolved, the union will not give further notice to the government before embarking on an indefinite strike. The NNPC boss pleaded with the management of the three oil companies to rectify the employment status of casual tanker drivers in their organisations. John Kumuyi, one of the sons of the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, and his now-wife, Love, were suspended by the leadership of the aforementioned church and banned from carrying out any activity in this church. The decision is grounded by the recent controversy over the couple’s wedding in Jamaica. It would be recalled that John and Love wedded in Jamaica on 15 June, 2013, only toreceive thousands negative comments from members of the church. Many condemned the wedding gown worn by the wife-to be, also other aspects of the wedding that were at variance with the church’s standards. Love’s attires turned out to differ from the conventional ones set for Deeper Life members. Lots of people noticed her hair wasn’t “natural” and that she applied lipstick as part of the make-up. A limousine hired to deliver the couple to their destination after the wedding, a huge cake that was served at the ceremony were contraryto the church’s tradition. The church leaders decided to place the coupleon suspension to give them time to pray and seek forgiveness from God for theiraction, following countless comments on social media and by the members of Deeper Life. John and Love’s suspension from church activities was announced last Saturday, at Deeper Life’s monthly Miracle and Revival Programme, held at the Deeper Life Conference Centre (DLCC), Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The news was delivered by PastorPhilip Oluwi, a key leader in the church, who obviously was following the instructions from the General Superintendent of the church, Pastor WilliamKumuyi. Oluwi stressed that thestandard of Deeper Life regarding wedding and moderacy had not changed. “The church, Deeper Life, remains committed to the biblical practice and standard of almost 40 years Christian dressing and still remains and does not compromise on biblical Christian dressing. “Hence, deviation warrants the displeasure and frown of God and the leadership of the church. John and Love are now under discipline,” Oluwi announced to the entire congregation. The couple has already apologised to the church for the inappropriate way the wedding was conducted. The letter was readby Oluwi and re-read several times to churchmembers by the Church’s Secretary, Pastor Jerry Asemota. The letter, addressed to the Church Secretary and titled ‘Letter of Apology,’ expressed the deepest regret of the couple for bringing the church into disrepute. Moreover, further investigation has revealed that John and Love’s wedding was not conducted in a Deeper Life Bible Church. It wasalso not conducted by pastors from the church, as Deeper Life Bible Church in Jamaica has not been licensed by the country’s government to join couples in wedlock, according to the laws of Jamaica. The wedding was taken to another church where the ministers in the unnamed church conducted the wedding and joined them in holy matrimony. Deeper Life leaders that came from Nigeria were said to have disapproved of the earlier gown Love was to wear for the wedding, while another was hurriedly sewed the night before the wedding. Church leaders were said not to have seen the new dress until the couple was marchinginto the church and by then, it was too late to take any action as the wedding was not conducted in a deeper life church SOURCE- www.metronaija.com/deeper-life-suspends-kumuyis-son-daughter-in-law/ |
Appeal Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State Capital, had this morning dismissed the appeal filed by the Action Congress of Nigeria ,ACN, governorship candidate, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN, over the judgment of the lower court headed by Justice Andovar Kaka’n which upheld the victory of Governor Olusegun Mimiko. The five member-appeal panel headed byJustice Garba Muhammed said the tribunal was right to have dismissed the petition of Akeredolu on the ground that the injection of names into the voters registrar as alleged by the ACN was a pre-election issue. Although, the Appeal Court agreed that the injection of names into the 2012 voters registrar used for the election was illegal, it insisted that it was a pre-election matter which should have been treated earlier. Relatively, the Appeal court is presently ruling on the petition filed by the PDP over Mimiko’s victory. SOURCE- www.metronaija.com/breaking-news-appeal-court-dismisses-akeredolus-appeal/

As the month of July arrives, Lagos State residents have been urged to prepare for high intensity rainfall with wind and thunder storm. This call was issued Sunday by the state Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, in the wake of the reports from Nigeria Metrological Agency (NIMET), and the need to sensitise Lagosians as rainy season approaches. Bello advised residents in the state not to panic whenever it rains as they would experience accumulated water concentration on some part of the roads and highways, depending on the intensity of the rains. “Lagosians are however assured that the accumulated water will recede in no time,” hesaid. According to him, it had been raining since January and this has increased the water level of the soil, thereby making infiltration capacity to be very low across the state. He further explained that concentration of water had led to the saturation of the soil, which would henceforth cause delayed discharge of rain water into the water bodies. Bello, however, assured Lagosians that whatever flash flood recorded during the rains, it would gradually discharge in less than 24 hours, because of the effectiveness of the drainage channels in the state. Residents along flood plains, low line areas and other coast lines, like Ajegunle, Owode-Onirin axis, Owode-Elelede, Kuramo beach, Alpha beach, Okun-mapo, Okun Ajah, Mende-Maryland, Ijora-Badia, Iwaya were urged to be extremely careful or possibly vacate their residence temporarily once they notice gradual accumulation of rising water and move to higher grounds “as the state is not ready to lose any life during the rainy period.” “Lagos is a coastal state and as such, is susceptible to flash flood anytime there is rain of high intensity, however what is of utmost importance to this administration is toensure that, whatever flash flood experiencedis effectively discharged into our channels that have been dredged and cleaned, in anticipation of this year’s rain. “Lagos residents are further encouraged to relate effectively with deployed Resident Engineers and Drainage Maintenance Officers, whose phone numbers was recently published in the print and electronic media toalert them whenever they have flooding challenges,” he said. The commissioner also advised Lagosians to be safety conscious during this period, stating some safety measures as “Avoid going out during the rains expect only when it is compulsory. Be conscious when driving do not over speed and ensure that your vehicles are in good condition and do not drive through flooded areas as it might be difficult to identify its depth; but rather refrain from during through the flooded areas.” SOURCE- www.metronaija.com/lagos-to-experience-heavy-rainfall-in-july/ |

National Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and founding coordinator of the Throneroom Trust Ministry, Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Apostle Emmanuel Nuhu Kure has said that some wives of slain clerics who died during the religious conflict in the North have turned to prostitution in their bid to sustain their families after the exitof their husbands. Kure made this known while x-raying the performance of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which he faulted over the way it has been handling ethno-religious crises in the country. “NEMA is basically in the ‘hit-and-run’ business of instant intervention; it is not doing enough in terms of rehabilitation and resettlement of victims. “I know the wives of some people who were killed in the religious conflicts in the North, who have now turned prostitutes in order to fend for their families. For some of those families, their children were out of school for up to two years because they could not affordschool fees. Some are yet to be back in school,” Kure told journalists in Lagos ahead of the Throneroom’s Prophetic Prayer Conference held at the National Stadium, Lagos. The cleric also accused NEMA of being sentimental in the discharge of their duties saying that “NEMA is a little bit partial in the distribution of resources and the agency has used whatever resources they have to empower certain people,” adding that “NEMA has not made it easy for Christian victims to be reached out to which I know because of what people went through the last time we had a crisis in Kafanchan”. Kure further disclosed that PFN has commenced compilation of a nationwide directory of victims of religious crises with a view to rehabilitating affected members in due course. “The project is headed by Evangelist MatthewOwojaiye, and it is currently raising funds for various resettlement and rehabilitation programmes including building of houses for victims, payment of school fees for orphans and impacted children,” he said. The Customs men fired warning shots at the fleeing smugglers near the army barracks so soldiers came out to attack them. Speaking on the incident, spokesperson of the 3 Brigade Nigerian Army in Kano, Capt. Ikedichi Iweha said when the smugglers entered Katogi village, which he said is a smugglers’ community, villagers prevented the Customs officials from going after them. According to him, the villagers launched attack on the Customs officials, injuring five. Iweha said it was soldiers from the barracks that intervened and rescued the 15 Customs personnel from the villagers. He said five of the wounded officials were being treated at the army hospital in the barracks. According to him, four vehicles belonging to the Customs officials and 10 others containing rice and cooking oil were recovered from the smugglers. The army spokesperson disclosed that weapons of the Customs men were in the custody of the soldiers. But in his account of the incident, spokesperson of the Katsima State Customs Service Command, Mohammed Auwal said it was the soldiers who wounded the Customs officials. Auwal told us that the Customs had a tip off on attempt to smuggle about 40 vehicles loaded with rice into the country and based on that a joint operation comprising Controller General’s task force, General Operations and Area Command were drafted go intercept the smugglers. “Our men were pursuing them and firing warning shots to scare them and as they got to the barracks, some of the drivers jumped the fence and escaped into the barracks, but as the soldiers came out they started firing directly at our men who were on uniform and in official vehicles. “Our men did not respond! It was afternoon so the soldiers cannot say they couldn’t make out who they were. “The soldiers beat up out officers and disarmed them. “They injured 13 of them, three of our official vehicles, as well as our rifles are with them. “They’re holding about seven vehicles loaded with rice and nine of the smugglers,” he said. The spokesperson said investigations had commenced to find out if there was “connivance” between the smugglers and the soldiers, adding, “because some of the soldiers were trailing u—that we allowed trailers to pass but impound motorcycles and cars.” SOURCE- www.informationnaija.com/soldiers-beat-injure-13-customs-officers-in-katsina/ |
