An angry mob burnt the trucks following the incident. A couple riding on a motorbike, as well five other persons have been killed in a multi-vehicle crash at Ibese Town, Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State . The victims were killed on Thursday night by three trucks allegedly belonging to Dangote Cement Company . The trucks were loaded with cement. We gathered that the crash was as a result of the recklessness of the truck drivers. When contacted, the Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Itori, Fatai Bakare, confirmed the accident to journalists in Abeokuta, adding that the number plates of thetrucks were removed before the arrival of the security operatives. He further explained that two motorbikes carrying three passengers each were crushed by the trucks. Irate local youth set two of the trucks on fire including a motor-boy from one of the trucks. Mr. Bakare attributed the accident to recklessness of the truck driver adding that they are generally reckless in the area. He said the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Ilaro General Hospital morgue. “It was an accident involving three trucks belonging to Dangote Cement Company but before we got there, the number plates of the trucks were already removed before the men ofFRSC got to the scene, Mr. Bakare said. “Seven people died in the accident including an husband and wife on a bike. It involved 6 males and 1 female. Their bodies have been deposited at the Ilaro General Hospital morgue. As expected, people reacted angrily and burnt down two trucks of the cement company. “The accident was a result of recklessness on the part of the driver which led to the loss of control. Truck drivers along that route are generally reckless and FRSC is doing all that is necessary to put the situation under control,” he added. When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said only four people died from the accident. Mr. Adejobi, in a telephone interview, said it was a fatal accident involving the trailer and two motor bikes. He explained that no fewer than 50 mobile and conventional police men have been drafted to the scene to restore order and contain the angry mob that took advantage of the incident to mete jungle justice. He said the State Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, has been in the town since Thursday to hold meetings with the traditional ruler, youth organizations and Dangote CementCompany on how best to manage the situation. “Since yesterday, the Commissioner of Police has been holding meetings with the traditional ruler, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, and all the stakeholders in the area on how best to manage the situation. “Ogun State police command has drafted over 50 policemen which include both mobile and conventional policemen to maintain law and order in the area,” he said. However, in a swift reaction, the Head, Corporate Communications of Dangote Cement,Anthony Chiejina, denied that the trailer which crushed the victims belonged to the cement company. Chiejina described the development as unfortunate adding that men of the company were on ground to ascertain the development and provide assistance to those who might have been affected. “Dangote Cement Plc has learnt of a sad and unfortunate incident involving a cement dealer’s truck- not Dangote truck- resulting in loss of lives at Ibese, near Ilaro, Ogun State. “The angry community immediately after, in reaction to the incident, waylaid Dangote Cement trucks- one empty, the other cement loaded- coming to and from our plant, attacked the drivers and burnt the trucks. “We are currently on ground to ascertain the development and provide assistance to those who might have been affected,” Mr. Chiejina said SOURCE- www.informationnaija.com/cement-truck-kills-couple-five-others-in-ogun/ |

President Goodluck Jonathan onSaturday said that hewas yet to complete his house inhis hometown Otuoke in Bayelsa State. According to him, he might give out the house before he passes on, if he discovers that his children may not be willing to relocate to the village. Mr. President said this in Lagos at a fund raisingceremony for St. Stephens Anglican Deanery and Youth Development Centre, Otuoke. His words, “We are all mortal beings, we are all biological specimen so we will all die but when we die, what will we be remembered for, what will we leave behind? “I use to tell people that even the house I am struggling to build in the village, these days in this global age, how am I sure that my children will even stay in my root. They want to go to West Indies, they want to go to Latin America. “So, I was even joking with people that if I look at the behaviour of my children and if I don’t see any of them that will patronise the village, Iwill donate my house before I die.” He called on the need for prominent Nigerians to make meaningful contributions to the progress of poor communities in the nation for the betterment of lives of the youth and empower them to make useful contributions towards national development. Jonathan noted that project for the St. Stephens Anglican Deanery and Youth Development Centre was very important to himbecause he wanted to make sure that the youthgo through a better system of education different from the one he experienced while growing up. He voiced his conviction thus, “I feel the only thing I can do is to make sure that from nurseryschool to primary and secondary school, there should be a standard educational facility and youth programme, so that it gives opportunity for the younger ones to grow. Even if we die in the next 100 years, people will remember that those before them have something for them,” he said. Those at the occasion were Chairman of Visafone, Jim Ovia; Chairman Capital oil, Chief Ifeanyi Uba; Chairman of A-Z Oil, Chika Okafor, Chairman Arik Air, Joseph Arumemi–Ikhide, ObaOtudeko and Tony Elumelu. The Nigerian government has fired the director general of the Nigerian Law School, Tahir Mamman, and his six deputies throwing the network of law schools into a mid session crisis. There are six law schools in the country located in Lagos, Enugu, Kano, and recently Yenagoa – capital of president Goodluck Jonathan’s home state, Bayelsa – and Yola, capital of Adamawa state. Deputy directors head the schools, and although the federal government offered no reasons for the sudden sack coming when the schools are in mid session, presidency sources in Abuja said it was based on the recommendation of the Nigeria’s Justice Minister, Mohammed Adoke. President Jonathan approved the sack late Thursday. Mr. Mamman will keep his post till a replacement is announced for his job and those of his deputies. Unofficial sources in Mr. Adoke’s office said the recommendation was based on claims that Mr. Mamman had spent five years in office. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/125273-jonathan-fires-all-nigerian-law-school-directors.html |
Contrary to the media speculation that there was an ongoing peace talks between members of Islamic fundamentalist, Boko Haram, and a delegation of the Northern State Governors’ Forum, the presidency has denied the rumour, saying it was not aware of such negotiation. According to the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, as far President Goodluck Jonathanwas concerned, members of the extremists remain faceless, since nobody had so far approached him on their behalf. Gulak was responding to a recent statement made by the sect in which its members took exception to Jonathan’s statement during his recent state visit to Yobe and Borno states that members of the sect were “ghosts” and so he could not grant them amnesty as proposed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III. He challenged any Governor currently talking with members of the sect to approach Jonathan and brief him on the ongoing talks. The special adviser noted that as far as the President was concerned, until somebody approaches him to represent the sect, the report of ongoing talks was aspeculation which Jonathan could not act on. He said, “The President is not aware of any governor either from the North, South, East or West negotiating with BokoHaram. “Let any governor that is negotiating withthe sect come to the President and tell him that he is representing them and thathe wants amnesty for them. “As it is now, no governor has come forward to say that, so it is just a speculation and the President cannot work on mere speculation.” SOURCE- www.informationnaija.com/no-dialogue-with-boko-haram-presidency/ |

The Deputy Governor of Imo State Chief Jude Agbaso has officially tendered his resignation letter as Deputy Governor of the state. The move is calculated to avoid the impeachment hammer looming over his head and which had gone to committee stage to be concluded by next week. This move is motivated by the need for the man to leave the Deputy Governor’s office and continue to be entitled to all honour and entitlements accruable to a former Deputy Governor of the State. However, it remains to be seen whether the letter would be accepted by the Governor, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, as his fate now lies at his mercy now. If the Governor and members of IMHA rejects the resignation, they may go ahead with the impeachment moves which will totally obliterate Jude Agbaso’s name from history of people to live with the honour and entitlement of a former Deputy Governor. There are indications that terrorist groups, Boko Haram and Ansaru, are being funded by drug cartels in Latin America, a report has revealed. The report entitled, "Terrorism in Northern Africa and the Sahel in 2012: Global Reach and Implications," is an update on five earlier studies. Published by the Director, Inter-University Centre for Terrorism Studies, USA, Yonah Alexander, in February 2013, the report suggested that Al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb, had aligned with many other groups in order to expand its sources of funding. Intelligence reports have in the past identified a strong link between AQIM and Boko Haram with the newly emerging Ansaru. In December 2012, the Commander of the United States African Command, Gen. Carter Ham, stated that there was an increasing collaboration between AQIM and other terroristgroups in Africa, including Boko Haram. 燭he 33-page report states in part, "The threats of Al-Qaida's new regional hub in northern Mali and from its associates constitute both tactical and strategic challenges. "Primary sources of financing of their activitiesinclude kidnapping (in some cases, kidnapping is outsourced to criminals), piracy and illicit trafficking of drugs, human, vehiclesand other contraband goods. "Intelligence reports and arrests have confirmed that AQIM has established links withLatin cartels for 'drugs-for-arms' smuggling into Europe through terrorist-trafficking networks in the Sahel." The report indicates that the drug and arms trafficking undertaken by the terrorists groupsis further aided by porous borders of countries in the region. It is stated in the report that the status of AQIM in the Sahel has opened a new path for the terrorist group to shift its centre of gravity from Afghanistan and Pakistan to a new abode. With regional assessments on nine different African nations, the report states in the sectionon Nigeria, that Boko Haram and Ansaru's involvement with AQIM fits the "model of internationalisation of terrorist movements" in other parts of the world. Boko Haram operatives have been reported in the past to have attacked banks in order to raise funds for their operations. However, our correspondent contacted the spokesperson for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mitchell Ofoyeju, to find out if the agency was aware of the drug-for-arms modus operandi of Boko Haram and Ansaru. "We are aware of the report. The agency is conducting a critical investigation on that angle. The outcome of the investigation would determine what step to take next. But as far asNDLEA is concerned, we are not overlooking anything," Ofoyeju said. SOURCE- www.informationnaija.com/latin-american-drug-cartels-fund-boko-haram-ansaru-report/ |

The Lagos State House of Assembly is to begin deliberations on a bill seeking to frustrate and criminalise the activities of land grabbers, land speculators also known as ‘Omo Onile’ and regulate the activities of agents dealing with issues of land in the state. This hint was dropped on the floor of the House by the Chairman, Committee on Judiciary, Public Complaints and Petitions,Sanai Agunbiade, while presenting a report about land tussle in the state. Agunbiade informed his colleagues that the bill, a private member bill which already has the blessing of the executive arm of the state government, will soon be presented to the House for further deliberations and passage. The lawmaker, in the report he would present, said one of the recommendationsinclude providing a law to curb the excesses of land speculators. “I want to inform this House that there is a bill to that effect. It is a private member bill. “The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice has made his inputs and the bill will soon be presented to the House.” The lawmakers all agreed that it was a good idea to come up with such a bill against land speculators who have perpetrated violence in parts of the state. In some situations, agents and omo-onilessell a particular plot or parcel of land to several people and then bolt with their money. This results in violence and court cases among the buyers. While commending Agunbiade, a memberof the House, Ipoola Omisore, advised that the bill must specify who actually owns what land in the state since land is to the state what oil is to the Niger Deltans. Protesters numbering about a thousand stormed the Ogun State governor's office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Thursday, over an alleged plot by the government to wipe out Ajegunle/Araromi Community in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State in the name of development. The angry protesters who in their peaceful protest caused a standstill in the governor's office for a period of time, accused the state governor, Ibikunle Amosun of planning to render over three thousand residents of the community homeless. Leading the protesters who were armed with placards with various inscriptions ; 'We grew upthere,we have no place to go','Human right save us', 'Please don't send us away' among others, the village head,Tajudeen Aina and Iyaloja of the community,Omotayo Amos begged the governor to shelve the plan in the interest of the people. He said, " our community had earlier conceded mass portion from the community land to government where both trailer park and Nestle company were sited. "The government again suddenly sent quit notice to the residents of over 1,000 houses in the community to quit ,saying the authority needed all the entire community land space. "Over three thousand people live in the community and majority earned their living from there, why is it that it is the same community the government wants to pull downall its houses for projects that were not made known to the landlords and residents". Reacting to the allegation, the government claimed that all the buildings in the communityare illegal structures, that prompted it to write a quit notice under 24hours after receipt of the notice order. The notice order made available to our correspondent was dated March 4,2013, with number 1011396 which was signed by Urban and Regional Planning, indicating the alleged contravention and demolition notice. "The buildings in the community which are located along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are illegal structure. "Notice is hereby given that if the said contravention is not removed within 24hours days from the date of service of this notice, the said contravention shall be demolished and thecost of such demolition shall be recovered from you" the letter stated. While denying the allegation levelled against them, the community leader said all the buildings were illegal structures, arguing that all the buildings there have approved survey plan. He said, "the information at our disposal is that the government is planning to take over the 120 hectares mass land of the community so asto re-sell it to foreign investors at the expense of the innocent residents "We don't want development that will deny us our rights and make us to suffer, where do they want us to go,"he said. Attending to the protesters, the Governor Special Adviser on Security Matter, Patrick Akinduro assured them that he would make their grievances known to the governor. While appreciating their peaceful conduct which he advised them to maintain, the governor security aide said, the authority would get back to them latest next Monday. "I learnt that some people from Ajegunle/Araromi are protesting and came to address you. I will report your grievances to thegovernor who knows better and we shall get back to you latest on Monday, just ensure you maintain peace", Akinduro stressed. The President is expected to be in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital on Thursday. Then, he is expected to spend a night in Maiduguri and on Friday to visit some areas as well as meet with Borno elders on the current challenges of insecurity in the state. Meanwhile, the heavy security presence and restriction of movement in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, following the visit of Mr. President is beginning to scare many residents. They are seen buying food stuff to keep in theirhomes, in case of any eventuality, as the heavysecurity presence is becoming alarming and scary. The fear has been compounded by the rumour making the rounds that the entire city would be shut down on Friday owing to the President's visit. The people hope that the visit of Nigeria's number one citizen would not bring bad day forbusiness in the state. "When the Vice President came, it was a sad day for me. The security has blocked all the roads and there is no business going on. I hope that they would have some human face; because we need to eat and make a living.
