With no experience, it is difficult to specialise. You don’t know what industry you’re going to end up in so it’s pointless specialising. Just position yourself well in a way that you can ‘grab’ opportunities in these sectors and then when you start you can focus on specialising. You need to remember that you’re doing a masters now as a way to emigrate. Or at least, that is very likely the case. If you were a graduate in the UK already, my advise would have been to apply for graduate jobs first and do a masters later (when you have a much better idea of what path you’re following).

With five years experience or more, you may be more interested in Engineering Management or even an MBA. You can start in a proper engineering role and decide later you want to go into IT or go down the project management route. Basically, it is very difficult to say/decide at the stage you’re at now and even if you spend the rest of the year planning, things would likely pan out differently.

Ikjosh04:
Thank you, this is the type of advice i seek.
Chemical Engineering is a specialized course that's the jack of all trade and master of none. For my graduate study i want to build my career and specialize in an aspect of Chemical Engineering that's why I'm seeking for advice of people that knows and understand the job market of Uk/Ireland.
I've passion and I can excel in any aspect of Chemical Engineering but we all know the job space has changed and is changing so i want to specialize in something that will make me well sought after in the job market of Uk and Ireland as an immigrant bearing in mind the competition out there and visa hurdle of getting a work visa after the 2yrs post study visa.
TravelRe: Uk Student Visa/tier 4 Pbs - Your Questions Answered Part 4 by Oloshi83: 9:26am On May 25, 2020
Hello,

I’d suggest Chemical or Process Engineering as the opportunities on offer with that background is varied (oil and gas is the most popular but there’s food and chemical/petrochemical processing which is commonly overlooked etc).

Bear in mind that for some of them you may need to leave the UK after you get some experience (for better money) but there are lots of opportunities sha.

Biomedical and the like is a bit restrictive in my view.

Yes, you can work 20 hours a week as others have said but it’s advisable that you have most if not all of your tuition fees so you’re only working to cover your living expenses.

Ikjosh04:
Hi everyone, Good Evening.
I'm a fresh chemical engineering graduate and I'm exploring my options. I've decided to go for my masters in uk or Ireland cause it's relatively cheaper compared to other countries I've in mind. I'm looking at going for a masters program in Biomedical engineering or biopharmceutical/pharmaceutical engineering or Biochemical Engineering in but I'll like to have a full knowledge of the labour market over there. Should I go ahead and pursue my masters in Biomedical Engineering or i should look at other career paths like Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Automation Engineering, Project Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and co. My B. Eng Chemical Engineering has a wide career path. So my question which career path is better and do you know will thrive and is well sought after in Uk/Ireland?
Also is there any university that will offer me partial scholarship and is it possible for me to work and earn the money I'll use for my living expenses?

I’d suggest you email the Uni and ask them to extend the deadline for the deposit payment. You can’t apply for a visa until mid to late June anyway (for Sept start) so focus on your 28 day proof of funds for now and leave the payment matter until the end of May/June.

You could also try Ireland. You get a two year post study work visa too and fees in some Unis are slightly cheaper. University of Limerick, for example, comes in at closer to £11k. Make the Ireland thread your friend.

I’d suggest you apply to Unis in both countries anyway as you have nothing to lose. Spend a couple of days on your personal statement and try and edit the ‘why Uni of X/X city’ section a bit for each application to make it relevant.

Thank you so much for your response and recommendation. Untop this school fees matter, I'm just spread thin, really. It took me more than 2 full years to save up the 10,000 pounds that I want to use and pay my school fees now (I was hoping to use it for Canada express entry, but ITA scores have shot up and I just can't wait in this country anymore). In addition to that, I'm counting on showing 2.5 million+ in my mother's account (the gratuity she just got) to serve as the living cost. Not like that is even enough, I'm still thinking of how to balance the huge deficit (especially with the current naira depreciation and all). I'm just tired. Those who are born with silver spoon do not know what they have. This life is hard when you have to struggle and suffer to get money.

Thank you very much oga Justwise. I will try. If you can, I'd appreciate if you can suggest likely institutions, most especially those within my budget. God bless.

Thank you so much for these suggestions. I've checked all of them out, and they indeed look promising. But this their fees sha. Are there no schools with under 10k pounds fees in the UK? Ah.
TravelRe: Uk Student Visa/tier 4 Pbs - Your Questions Answered Part 4 by Oloshi83: 6:11am On May 10, 2020
Unfortunately, nothing under £10k especially if you didn’t graduate with a 2.1 or higher.

Go back a page or two, someone suggested ways to ‘raise’ cash recently.

I think the University of West London offers a discount if you are accepted to be a student ambassador but remember that being in London increases your maintenance costs by about £2k. So that defeats the purpose really.

I see someone suggested Birmingham City....try Sunderland too. At least they were taking Engineering graduates from Naija with a 3rd class a few years ago. You could also apply for MSc Engineering Business Management which is basically a Management course tailored for Engineers and covers supply chain management and project management. Entry requirement is similar but, typically, only Engineers would apply to EBM so competition isn’t as stiff as PM.

Also your personal statement is key. I’m not suggesting you lie but if you can omit the ‘volunteer’ bit, it should help as you need to show that you had an acceptable level of responsibility. It would be difficult to convince anyone if you were in the role voluntarily.

No Uni would advertise accepting applicants with a 3rd class so I’d say apply to a few (with your very convincing personal statement) and hope for the best. Other Unis to try - Solent Uni, Salford, Sheffield Hallam, Cardiff Metropolitan, Bedfordshire and UWE (new course for the Uni).

This is from Salford’s website ‘Where a student has gained a recognised honours degree but does not meet the normal entry qualification requirement, they may still be considered for entry if they can demonstrate relevant work experience of a minimum two years duration post study and acceptable level of responsibility.‘

All the best!

Hello everyone... please I need candid advise here.

I studied Engineering, but graduated with a third class. I want to switch career and get masters in a course related to Business/Finance/project management/etc. Please which universities in the UK would accept me with third class? My budget for school fees is not more than 10,000 pounds. I've searched everywhere, but I keep seeing 2:2 base requirement.

Something to note, for the past 3 years, I have been a volunteer for a major international organization in project management capacity. I am aware that requirements are not set in stone and can be adjusted on individual basis, but I'd love to get suggestions on the schools that are more flexible and more likely to accept my grade. Please help me.

Hi FrankRobbn1!

Thanks for all the advice you give on the platform.

I remember seeing a post sometime last year where you mentioned Unis that offer full funding for masters programmes. I can’t seem to find it now. Can you please share some suggestions (applicant’s undergrad was in Economics and Mathematics, 1st class).

Thanks!

Frankrobbn1:
It might be a degree equivalent but that doesn't guarantee you a space for a master's program in Canada. Prior to be granted a master's admission in any of the designated institutions in Canada, graduate admission department always take into consideration your undergraduate GPA of which yours is an HND certification and not a Bachelor's degree. As i earlier advised, your better option is going for a PGD program in Canada without declaring the previous PGD during the visa application. This is the feasible way to increase your chances to be granted a Visa to study in Canada.

I hope this information helps.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter, don't hesitate to reach out here for professional assistance and advice.

It will end in praise
TravelRe: Uk Student Visa/tier 4 Pbs - Your Questions Answered Part 3 by Oloshi83:
I agree. I was just trying to get the guy to think about it objectively.

Income requirements are always based on gross salary so although I agree that his sponsor/brother would need to be on a decent sum, the Home Office’s requirement always seems to be lower than what reality dictates. For example, last time I checked, for a British citizen/settled person to bring his/her spouse from abroad, they only have to be earning £18,600 before tax.

Phenmeson:
I don't think any interviewer will even make a positive decision with that. We all know that most countries source of income rely on foreigners spending. If a student living cost is £1200 monthly, his brother /relative trying to accommodate must be living in 2 bedroom flat if he is single with minimum salary of £40000 in London

TravelRe: Uk Student Visa/tier 4 Pbs - Your Questions Answered Part 3 by Oloshi83: 10:47am On Apr 11, 2020
First of all, Moorgate is not a city.

Secondly, whether or not you intend to stay with family and save on accommodation costs, you would still need to provide proof of funds.

So yeah, you can tell the interviewer that you intend to stay with family as it’s an easy commute to Moorgate. However, ask yourself this question....if you were the interviewer, would you believe that the funds shown would be available to the applicant throughout the course of his/her study given he/she has made it clear that the plan isn’t to pay for accommodation. Just remember this point when preparing for said interview.

Also, as an aside, I think someone already suggested you consider ‘brand name’ and look into other London Unis. Westminster for one is a decent alternative and is not too far from Moorgate. There are also other Unis that have ‘campuses’ in London (Sunderland, Coventry etc). If your brother lives in London (or neighbouring counties), you should be able to commute to most places. Just check and make sure you’re not signing yourself up for a crazy commute.

All the best.

preciousmathias:
Hello guys if I want to go for visa interview, can I tell them that I have a place to stay because I have a brother who is in a city not too far from moorgate the city where the school I applied to is (university of law business school), so how best should I go about that? Please I need advice.

Yes. All the time.

Depending on what industry you’re in, there’s also JobServe, Jobsite and of course, LinkedIn Jobs.

These sites are heavily used by recruiters and companies. A lot of recruiters are time wasters but it doesn’t mean nothing would come out of it. With some experience, you’d learn to filter the time wasters for the ones wey get better but to start with, there’s just no way to know.

Hello,

If you currently work in the aviation industry (and are still interested in it), I would consider an Engineering course in Portsmouth, Bournemouth or Southampton (basically in and around Hampshire) as there are a number of companies in the Farnborough region (BAE Systems, Cobham etc). Mechanical or electrical etc. Engineering Business Management/Project Management is decent as well but if you’re interested in the technical bit and have the relevant undergrad degree, then that would stand you in good stead.

Just my two cents. I studied MSc Eng Business Management (15 years ago though) and I work in the aviation industry (not a technical role though as I’m not an engineer). I hope this helps.

Megadixh:
Greetings house!
I just got unconditional offer for Masters in Advanced mechanical engineering with Shefield Hallam university. I have been requested to pay 1000GBP to secure a place... Also, I have admission with Uni Portsmouth, MSc in Engineering management.
Please I need answers and advice to these questions
1) Though everyone is hopeful for the solution to covid-19, should I go ahead to make the 1k payment despite this pandemic or I should wait?

2) Which of these two universities and locations would offer more job opportunities for student and also chances for career breakthrough(Please I don’t intend to return after schooling grin).
I am currently working in the aviation industry.

I agree.

‘Your first language is usually the language you learned and spoke in the home. It can also be your primary language, especially if you've later learned a second language. Your primary language is the language that you speak everyday in most situations — home, work, school, etc. It can be a second language for you.’

For most people who went to Uni in Nigeria and are looking to study in the UK at postgrad level, I would be very surprised if English is not their first language as it is the official language.

So yes, whilst it may be a second language, if it is your primary language as defined above, it is your first language.

Cyberknight:
I always answer "yes" to this question, because English is my first language. I grew up speaking English, I think in English, I dream in English, and if the Gestapo test were applied to me (waking up someone from sleep suddenly before they gather full control), the first words out of my mouth would be in English.

You alone know if it is your first language.

However, Africans coming from countries where English is the "official" language are required to provide proof of having passed an English language exam to an acceptable standard (e.g. C6 in SSCE), which requirement is not imposed on those who are deemed to be "native" speakers, such as the English-speaking West Indian countries (Jamaica and the rest), the US, Australia, NZ, Canada, etc.

Send in your applications regardless and continue to chase your transcript. At the very least you’d get a conditional offer stating that your transcript needs to be submitted.

Good afternoon everyone. Thanks for your inputs. I'm a silent reader and still in the process of filling my application. I have eyes on Coventry University, Birmingham University and Sheffied Hallam for September Batch.

I have pended all of my applications because of my transcript. It's been over 3 weeks I started processing it in the school I graduated but yet to get it. Does not submiting my transcript alongside other documents pose a challenge to getting Admitted in my any of these schools?

Though in my Coventry application, there's no place specific to submit the Transcript. Please I will appreciate your inputs.

The Caribbean, Russia, Poland, Germany are all very decent alternatives at a significantly cheaper cost and in English. The NHS would always need immigrant doctors so you can look into moving to the UK after graduation.

Sorry for the delay. First and foremost, I will advise you order your gcms note and defer your admission. Secondly, I feel there's no clear relationship between your bachelor's degree and intended PGD(except if have a very good and convincing reason for it). Try to get a master's admission in related field but if you can't then go for PGD course that's related to your Bsc then try to explain why you are going for PGD and not master's (there are so many reasons for that, shouldn't have to be because of low bsc grades ).
NB: while trying to fix all these , make sure you order for your gcms note as you won't regret doing it.
There’s a strong correlation between his undergrad (IT) and the course he is applying for. He just needs to articulate it in his SOP. IT Project Management is a big thing - the question is whether or not he explained how that would help him when he returns to Nigeria or what he plans to do on his return. I packaged my cousin’s application (I’m his sponsor) same undergrad course, same course at Winnipeg and he just got his passport request. Also, as someone else said here, all the reasons for denial point to finance. Let’s not be quick to jump to conclusions.

I actually emailed Uber this morning and the responses are confusing. First of all they said the car would need to be 100k km or less to be on the platform at anytime. Then the response to my second email was that cars already on the platform are reviewed based on mileage AND the condition of the car, rather than just mileage. So if Uber sef can't come up with a consistent answer, can't blame the OP.
