Jobs/Vacancies › Re: 2024 Chevron Nigeria Experienced Professional Recruitment by olowoba2: 7:43pm On Jan 06 |
seriousbaby: Thanks @mrlee and @Alaprom. I appreciate your support. Yeah, I took a gamble quitting my job, but it was a calculated gamble at the time. They were going to downsize at my work place and I decided I could take one for the team. It is all good though, I got a decent severance package and I kept someone's neck off the chopping block. It is just that this got me really worried honestly, no comms, no reason as to why the delay, just hope. And hope is a currency that burns fast when there is no fuel to keep it alive. I guess another issue is I am not sure what to do. I don't put in 100% applying for new jobs because, well Chevron. I can't start working and 2 months in, leave for new place. It goes against what I stand for.
Anyways, thank you both for making me feel heard. I wish they could just be more transparent. I need that closure for real Never take emotional decisions when it comes to your livelihood. The same company you think you are "helping" won't do the same if the tables were turned. An example is the way Chevron seemed to have treated the applicants. Here is the blunt truth: no company prioritizes communication with people who are not employees or direct stakeholders. In the hierarchy of communication within large organizations, individuals seeking employment or vendors seeking business opportunities are usually the lowest priority. In many cases, companies only share information that has been reviewed and deemed non-sensitive. Often, only insiders who have access to the true state of affairs would give you real reasons why the recruitment was paused or delayed. Most companies would just not provide any formal information. It's painful but it is what it is. I have two friends who quit their well-paying jobs in April 2025 in order to join TotalEnergies after they completed background check / medicals AND received offer letters, only for Total to notify them that their resumption is on hold pending the completion of a structural re-organization. This is January 2026, and they are yet to resume. No further communication provided. This is a case of individuals who had offers at hand, let alone your case where you have only been notified of background checks. Historically, most IOCs have had cases of prolonged recruitment, in which a few were eventually paused permanently or extensively delayed by many years. Even NNPC experienced such I think in 2015 when they didn't complete a recruitment program. Never, ever quit your job for an inconclusive process. However, I wish you the very best, and hope you eventually resume with Chevron! |

MT: Nigeria is not finished. Maybe you are.
People are still getting good jobs.
I consult for a financial institution in Nigeria on enterprise tech solution and I know young guys (between 24 to 27 years) getting jobs every week, travelling out on holiday to western world, balling big and coming back. Most of them work remotely, enjoy their lives. Companies abroad headhunt most of them, and the bank keeps recruiting with good pay in Nigeria standard.
These guys easily go to any embassy and get visa. I witness it. These guys choose and pick jobs. Banks place them on special salary scale, different from the operations guys. They have enviable perks. Banks send them on trainings in western worlds and they never think of japa. They go and come back, even collect fat estacode.
I am not talking about any dicks and harrys, I am talking about tech guys, which is my turf . Come to Island in Lagos and see for yourself.
So, if you are finished as an individual, there are some people killing it big in Nigeria, and hey, they are not politicians but they have skillsets which you lack.
And hey, how is Chile where you are slaving? You use 0.00000001% of the entire population to generalize that Nigeria is working? It's important to always look at the generality of the country not just a selected few to make general statements. The reality is that Nigeria has over 100 million citizens below poverty line with more sinking by the day due to Tpain's policy. Just because a very selected few are balling doesn't mean things are working right. |

Romance › Re: Can The Past Life Of A Lady Truly Be Overlooked ? by olowoba2: 9:23pm On Jan 26, 2024 |
Elzazzi: I will try and make this brief and please ignore the errors.
I was with my close friend yesterday evening. While we were chilling together, a call came in on his phone. it was his cousin that called telling what had happened and also seeking his advice. Now this is what happened, this his cousin has been dating this lady for about a year I think and he has already proposed to her and even took her to his parents and siblings. He also visited the lady family and did some introduction. Now April this year has been chosen for the wedding ceremony proper and a date has been fixed. This is where trouble started.
My friend cousin created a WhatsApp group for his wedding ceremony, he added all his friends and some of his classmates to this group so they can join hands and make his wedding day memorable. He posted his wedding IV to the group and some pictures of him and the lady, one of his old time classmate recognized her and immediately called him for a private meeting for urgent discussions.
He visited him the next day and this guy told him everything about his fiancée. How she used to be a stripper in Lagos clubs years back and how he and his friends had wild 3some with her. She used to base in Lagos as a call girl but relocated to Abuja and that’s where she met my friend cousin. After all these revelation this guy was in deep pain as he had already gone far with the weeding preparations. Of course his old time classmate advised him not to marry her, but this guy loves her so much and he is in a big dilemma of what to do next. As he thinking of leaving the country and go start life with her elsewhere.
Can such past truly be overlooked?
After my friend explained everything to me, I was just short of words but of course I advised he shouldn’t marry her. What advice would you give him in such a situation my fellow Nlanders ? The guy must not be blindfolded by “love” or emotions. An olosho will also be an olosho. The gal has probably noticed that the guy is naive and easy to deceive, as I am almost 100% certain the red flags must have been apparent in the relationship. If he doesn’t detach now, he will regret it later. I’m 100% sure of that. Tell the guy to RUN. |
Travel › Re: Should I Keep My Federal Job Or Travel to the U.K by olowoba2: 12:51am On Jan 04, 2024 |
mistacoco2: Hello guys,
For some days now I have been on a serious dilemma whether to resign from my federal government job that pays me above N200k for my current position and migrate to the UK or stay in naija and set up a business to augment my salary. I will be 34 years next year, I feel traveling to the uk for studies next year September will delay my chances of getting married, as I have planned not exceeding 34 years without getting married.
I belong to the school of thought that believes can make it in Nigeria despite all odds. However, considering the economic realities of the country, I have recently contemplating of japa and maybe get a Nigerian lady for marriage after my studies.
Please I earnestly need matured advice from you guys to know how to start the coming year.
Cc:Justwise If you won't accumulate excessive loans to japa, I will advise you to japa IF living a better life is your primary consideration. However, it appears money isn't your only consideration as you want to settle down as well. This is coming from someone who has japa'ed and return to Nigeria. Here is my analysis Pro: With UK, depending on your area of study and skillset, you have the opportunity to earn more and live a better life. It might be tough at the beginning but you will eventually be fine And even if things don't fully work out, your savings in pounds will become loads of Naira if you decide to move back. You can decide use that to invest in a business. To be honest, 200k is not a lot of money even in Nigeria. With 200k, you will hardly have any tangible savings by the end of the year, and you will basically be living from hand to mouth. You either need to start doing business or leave the country altogether to break away from the cycle of low income. Con: You want to get married. To be honest, it is best when married couples stay together at least for the first 3 years of their marriage to know and understand themselves better. It is now impossible to bring your spouse to UK if you plan to do a non-research based Masters program. Long distance marriage, especially at the start is a NO NO. I speak from the experience of others. I also believe it is better to first live with your spouse in Nigeria before both moving abroad. It all depends on what is more important to you. Money or marriage. |

casualobserver: when you think foreign accent is a thing of pride or a subject to consume your discussions and aspirations, have already lost the race before it started. For example, many Nigerian artistes tried to imitate foreigners before the advent of Afrobeat, they all flopped!!! it is only when Nigerian artistes started to be themselves and sing in their unique African way that the world embraced them. You cannot be more oyinbo than the oyinbo man, you have nothing to offer if what you are selling is not authentic but a copy. So be yourself, be proud of yourself, your accent, your culture and your heritage, stop giving yourselves foreign names or speaking in fake foreign accents or projecting foreign as superior, you are subconsciously telling yourself that you and your own are inferior and not good enough. if you reject yourself, others will reject you.
there is no Nigerian artiste who has made in on the international stage with a foreign accent....remember that. Sunny Ade, Fela etc all sang in their Nigerian accents and projected their Nigerianness. And before you mention Sade Adu and the likes of SEAL, they were all raised abroad and are only Nigerian in name. Thanks for your explanation, I largely agree with you. However there are exceptions. For instance, have you lived abroad? If you have lived abroad and you don’t try to adjust your natural Nigerian accent to blend in, you would find out that many people will find it hard to hear you which can severely impede communication and in some cases limit your career opportunities. Sometimes it is not inferiority complex. it is just a good social skill that can open doors for you, professionally and personally particularly if you are abroad. |

SALLYBERRY01: I grduated with 2.2(3.45) do you think i have a chance Why didn’t you finish with a good CGPA? You guys will finish with weak CGPAs and then start asking these kind of obvious questions. You ask yourself - Do you stand a chance competing with others with better CGPAs? You can always attempt. Put in a good SOP explaining why your CGPA was weak, and also demonstrate that you have what it takes to embark on a research study. You can use past examples. Your chances are extremely low but not inexistent. |
