EducationRe: Tuition Fees Of Public Universities In Nigeria by Olril18(m): 9:03pm On Dec 14, 2013
rudedough: I don't think tuition fee is a problem here, i think Nigerians are the problem of Nigeria. Nigerians have the mentality that everything must be given to the citizens free of charge. None of those countries you mentioned charges a tuition fee less than N1,000,000 per annum except Nigeria.

If a Taxi driver drives you to work everyday for free, how can he repair his car? How can he refuel it? In the long run, his Taxi will be dilapidated and impoverished. This is an example of the situation of Nigeria Universities and the reason why we cannot maintain the University cos it's almost free and for that same reason, we cannot produce quality engineers and good doctors because of the lack of practicals and research.

A University is not what it is in Nigeria where people are spoon-fed with plagiarized lecture notes. A University is a research institute. A place where Mr. A says this color is red and Mr. B says no it is Pink and they go into the Laboratory to carry out researches to proof that the color is indeed Red or Pink. A university is not a place where they read big books as it is in Nigeria University.

Look at the problem without bias or emotional attachment. Is Nigeria Universities carrying out researches as it should be? I guess not. Why? Lack of finance.

How can you run a University with a tuition fee of =N= 25,000 Naira per annum, that is USD $155 / £95 a year? Seriously!!

Out of £95, the University is expected to pay all academic staff salary (Professors, Asst. Professors, Counselor, VC, Research Supervisors etc), non-academic staff salary (Cleaners, security, gate-men, drivers etc.), cover electricity and all other utility bills of the University, sponsor minor student laboratory research, and major MSc and PhD researches. And all other sector that requires financial support.

Common my sister sad, let's tell ourselves the truth. Govt. cannot afford to take care of the University, it's time for Nigerians to accept their fate OR accept an increase in University tuition fee and then demand an access to educational loans from the Govt.

Govt needs to take their hands off school business else it will continue to decline at this rate. Even if the Govt give ASUU $200 trillion today, in 10 years or less the money will be exhausted and ASUU will be back on the Govt's neck cos truly the University cannot sustain its fiscal budget on a tuition fee of £95 per student. Haba!! sad sad

and so what?? d fact that education is run like dat in the west does not mean it should be run like that here...it does not not neccesarily mean wat is good and working for them will work for us,or should work for us...

Who told you we wanna school in Ghana? We are proud of our schools here. The last strike by ASUU,which is set to end days from now, will be the last time Nigerian students will ever have their academic calender disrupted..
BTW,which school is Ghana is better than schools like UNIBEN,UI,A.B.U,UNILAG,OAU,etc.?

D simple: The most expenssive public university is Kwara state uni with tuition fee of 100,000 for 100l students who are indigen of kwara state and 200,000 for non indigen and returning students also to pay a jaw dropping hundred thousand for indigeneous students. Though d skul is excellent in terms of facilities in place, but d fee is outregeous for a common man like me as I forfeited my admission ealiar dis year cos we were given a week to pay dis wooping amount of money. I applied through DE and was asked to pay 120,000 excluding a compulsory hostel fee of 40,000 for all freshers and 400l students.
uniosun freshers :105 k plus acceptance of 25 200 k (for science, others)
law,medicine:135 k plus 25 k acceptance

texaco1: God bless you bro , i have always said it , the mathematical equations favors gej for the presidential election , definitely the south east and south south will vote for him , the south west this time around will not vote for a northerner against gej , and if a southerner is brought out by the opposition the north will not vote for the southerner knowing fully well that he too will want to spend 8 years , they will rather stick with gej who has 4 years remaining . the south west may vote for apc in the guber but just like you said , yorubas will vote for pdp in the presidential and if the worst happens , pdp will break or split the south western votes . there is no way gej can lose and that is why the major hurdle that his opponents have now is to make sure that he doesnt get the pdp ticket . whoever wins the pdp ticket will become the next Nigerian president

You sit behind a laptop and speak for Nigerians everywhere.
Those on ground are doing their homework while you are doing your e-work. At the end of the day, it's the groundwork that speaks.
APC may win the SW states easily but when it comes to the presidential, SW will go ahead and vote against the North, again.

Prof Corruption: Where is PDP in Ogun? Please tell how PDP will capture Ogun in 2015? The governor has performed woefully? APC is not on ground? Or the PDP is not factionalized? Or criminals like Buruji will select a leader for good people of Ogun state?

PDP stands no chance, no matter how minute, in Osun.

In Kwara, the only opposition to Saraka is APC. Now both Saraki and APC are one. SO where is the threat?

In Oyo, Ibadan votes have always been the determining factor. The only section out of reach of APC is Ogbomoso axis. Until Ladoja joins PDP and consolidate his political machine with Akala, there's no meaningful opposition to Ajimobi. Besides, Ajimobi has performed creditably.

PDP can not win Lagos in 2015.

The only state that's competitive for now is Ekiti, not because PDP stands any chance but as a result of infighting in APC that led to exit of MOB to labour party.
big fact

those who are supporters of gej are so myopic..anybody against gej is apc supporter to them.
unless u dont want to admit, gej is a failed president, maybe he is a good man with good intentions but he has surrounded himself with psycophants, who have badly advised him ,make enemies for him and also derails his goverment...gej himself has shot himself in the foot with some of his descisions.
the honorable thing to do for him is not to contest in 2015,if he does, he would loose heavily..
for those saying the ss/se votes are enough for him, maybe they don't realise that its the votes from d north that will decide who wins, the north is so vast and large to the extent that one of those states ,Niger,is bigger than ss/se combined.....coupled with fact he won't win in the south west as well....gej step down and don't contest,u might manipulate pdp,but not the whole of nigeria.

boladez: I really do think the clueless and half wits administering the educational system and the confused FGN should take the blame for the mess. If FGN signs an agreement with a party and turns around to say the people who negotiated and signed on its behalf were not competent and informed to do so. ASUU is made of intellectuals not like the dunces we have in power.
lets be truthful sir, paralysing the education sector for six months, sending students away is not justificable at all...
why cant they call off the strike while negotiating with fg,but let nigerians be aware that say after a month and fg fails to implement anything in their agreements, they will be ready to go on strike again, that would have made sense, and pressure wil have been on fg.
but striking for six monthshuh its bloody incredible...its d biggest apex of irresponsibility and not justificable at all..
why hinder the life of those u claim u are fighting for??
EducationRe: New Lecturers Resume Work At AAUA To Replace Striking Ones by Olril18(m): 9:46pm On Dec 08, 2013
texazzpete: No. The question is, why are YOU always in support of the FG, when they are the cause of every single strike that ASUU embarks on?

The FG CLEARLY doesn't care about you or the state of tertiary education in Nigeria. Why else do you think this strike lingered on for 5 months? Everything the FG is offering could have been offered in the first month of the strike. Instead the FG was more interested in letting the Minister of Education jet around, fighting internal PDP squabbles with Amaechi.

I support ASUU 100% because they are fighting for the future of the Nigerian Tertiary Educational system. Nobody else is willing to take up this cause, not you, not any of the Senators 'appealing' to ASUU, not a single one of the 'Men of God' we have in Nigeria (perhaps with the exception of the Catholic Church).

Apart from the earned allowances stuff they have already secured, the N200bn per annum investment the FG will make will not be collected by ASUU. This is why I personally believe anyone that claims ASUU is 'fighting for their selfish aims' is just a subhuman neanderthal with stunted intelligence.
ive never been in support of fg......ASUU and fg are both national disaster..ur support for ASUU is totally wrong when they also have their own selfish demands....its up to u,if u belive keeping students at home for six incredible months is the right approach to to acheive their aim..

texazzpete: Yet another brainless post from you. I clearly overestimated your intelligence.
why are you always in support of ASUU sir??.the whole situation would have been better if this is their first time of striking..
look at this, they v striked a lot of times in d past(9 months,6 months,5 months,3 months, and currently six months),that s really sucidal, from d previous strikes, the infrastructure of our schools hasnt that improved, and our schools are still rated lowly in africa and d world..each time they strike, they always fought toe to toe with d fg....and now again,we are not sure they wont even strike in a year or two again...they are hindering the education sector while claiming they want to improve it...my point is ur support of ASUU would have been fair if they are striking for d first time.
i hope nxt year, when ASUU go on strike again,u will be here supporting them as this....

keeping students at home 4 six months, and still being proud of it is incredible...they deserved olympic medals..

The Prof keeps taking these ungrateful Nigerian students and their guardians to the cleaners. Seriously, what's wrong with you people?! "a ntori aja n ja, aja ni talon ja lenkunle owun" The FG you so defend has never denied that the situation in the universities is not as ASUU calls it! The FG is just not perturbed enough to commit to the change required to bring them back from the brink of total collapse. Which is an aberration, really.

At this point, what I would have expected the smart ones amongst you to be doing is taking ASUU and FG to task on what is really needed for proper reforms. Surprisingly, you're not, probably because you don't see yourselves as stakeholders! It is a shame, really.
i hope next year or two, when ASUU embark on their annual "festival of strike" again,u will be here defending them.

there have been 9 months strike,6 months,4 months,5months,3 months and of course this one is currently in its 6th month, and surely it wont be the
last...so lets rejoice ,lets celebrate, atleast infrastructures in nigeria universities has improved from the previous strikes, and these strikes has made nigerian universities among the best in the world.

prof.femi:
So what's you point? Are you aware that FG has not said it has any problems paying the arrears? Are you aware that payment of the arrears is *standard* practice in labor issues in Nigeria? Why you guys want us to fight FG on both our behalves, but forfeit or salaries, I do not know.

Before you respond to that, can I quickly ask you: do you believe that ASUU is the only entity responsible for keeping school fees down? I often ask this question as a quick way of showing students that ASUU *does* fight for them.
to that last question, where was ASUU when fashola astronomically increased lasu's fees??,they did nothing, and the state gov descision still stands...
secondly,i may be against ASUU strike, but i see no reason why they shouldn't be paid as they are a labour group, infact when i know fg though adamant will pay at the end..im just sarcastically pointing to the time when ASUU chairman went public they are ready to forgo d arrears as long as they acheive their major aim in d strike
thirdly,ASUU has lost public sympathy, and thats not becos nigerians belive they are greedy like we students do,but because the strike has overstayed its welcome..it would have make more sense if ASUU had called of the strike, tell nigerians they will called off the strike for let say a month, but if govt fails to implement its demand, they are ready to go back on strike...sure nigerians will appreciate this and pressure will be on the govt.
u are making it sound(i apologised) like if the whole lot of this strike is about we students, while ignoring the selfish demand from ASUU as well..

Can you mention ONE union in Nigeria that has had to forfeit its salary arrears long-term because it went on strike? Not only do we have to fight FG to fund education so you guys can get a better experience, we also have to fight a rearguard with the same whelps we are fighting for sniping at us.
why should ASUU make their arrears an issue, the policy adopted by the federal govt has never worked in this country and will never worked..at the end of it all,the fg.might.theatened and brittles, but we all know they will end up paying those witheld arrears...so its really a crappy escuse by you guys..

texazzpete: Ah, I remember you.
This will not end the way you think it will. I will not trade insults with you...you who are far beneath me.

I will only express sympathy for you. I see from your posting history that you have just gained admission to study Law in one of the state universities in the South West...perhaps you have been dreaming of this day for years now, when you can run away to school and dance skelewu outside your hostel. Perhaps even get a Jambite babe to toast cheesy

...then the ASUU strike occurred. Suddenly you're not in anyway concerned about the decaying labs in the Science and Engineering department. You care nothing about the decrepit chairs in the dental laboratory. You are not fazed by the fact that Computer Engineering students have to make do with old, rusting Pentium 2 computers donated way back in 2001. You think to yourself "what business is it of a lawyer to be if the patient examination chairs in the Optometry department no longer elevate pneumatically".

Some of us care, though. We want the Universities to get better, because it is from the crop of the graduates that technological innovations can spring from. Because better trained Engineers and Doctors can save lives. Because when brilliant students go back to lecture, the cycle continues and Nigeria gets better. It is because only with a revolution in this sector that we can finally make good on the "giant of Africa" claim. Heck, even lawyers will benefit immensely from more salubrious lecture halls.

But here you are, just wanting to resume as a Jambite and dance skelewu in front of the hostel. I sympathize with you...though this is a selfish dream.

Thanks to this ASUU you abuse on a daily basis on Nairaland, your University will receive nothing less than a billion Naira for capital projects yearly. That could allow them install power generators so you can read with electricity...and charge your deck so you can dance skelewu and entertain your babe. They could revamp your library. Your lecturers will earn more, a happy lecturer is less likely to be cynical, jaded and mean. Basically, you could leave your University after 5 years a much better finished product because of these 5 months of struggle.

So, yes, I will not trade insults with you. I sympathize with you. But you must refrain from calling me a f00l in the future. It's clear to anyone who has eyes that I am on a higher intellectual rung than you are right now, and it makes you look even worse when you use that insult.

and why blame jonathan for these mess??,its not like he is the first president that ASUU will go on strike in their time, dis problems has been from his predecesdors, and even worse than this..if his predecessors has been sincere with ASUU in their own time, will he meet what he is being now crucify for?
i also noticed uve been unwilling to hand ASUU some of the blame in the rot, are u sure u are not a ASUU member in denial??
