Space exploration is one of the most dangerous careers in the world. As an astronaut, you are more a dangerous gambler than anyone else, and what you stake is your life.

Outbound is a controlled flight and less risky than inbound which is not reasonably controlled.

Imagine being a crew member of a compartment falling from sky due to gravity and your only safety is landing in a deep water body.

Assuming there is some little mistake in the calculation and you eventually land on the shore. Even the pieces of the shredded compartment will be as tiny as pebbles. God forbid, I no dey do.

I'm pretty sure as time goes on and the boundary for cutting edge technology keeps getting pushed, scientists would come up with solutions for the uncertainties surrounding inbound flights.

This would have to do essentially with developing propulsion systems that would give the astronauts control over their flights on re-entry into the earth's atmosphere. The reason I feel this hasnt been done yet is because huge percentage of fuel is used up in outbound flights with the aim of escaping the earth's gravitational pull. Adding more fuel and additional boosters to the crafts (say boosters bound to the reentry capsules) would mean increasing the overall weight of the spacecraft, and we know what an engineering nightmare that portends.

With more efficient fuel systems or fuels, all that problem could be overcome. Heard research is ongoing about using nuclear fuel or some sort of plasma system as fuel. Upon perfecting such, we might enter the age of space exploration wherein the ease of take off and landing is similar to that in domestic aviation.
