Actual construction work will soon start on the site of the Eko Atlantic City, a futuristic real estate project being planned along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in Lagos State, following the successful reclamation of about 820 hectares of land.

The project is planned to complement the much sought after Victoria Island, which has become saturated in terms of transportation and land availability for new development, coupled with the huge shortage of hotel and residential facilities in the area.

Hence, a decision was taken by the Lagos State Government to expand the present Victoria Island and protect it by reclaiming land lost to the Atlantic Ocean and create the most valuable land in the state where people will live and work.

According to the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Prince Adesegun Oniru, the overall concept of the Eko Atlantic City development is to restore land lost to coastal erosion since the 1950s and to provide a permanent solution to the erosion by providing a robust sea wall or revetment along the newly reconstructed coastline.

Oniru, who spoke on the progress of work on the project in Ikeja on Wednesday at a ministerial press briefing by the ministry to mark the second year anniversary of the Governor Babatunde Fashola‘s administration, said that Eko Atlantic City would rise as the next generation of real estate developments in Africa.

The turning of the sod for the project was performed on behalf of President Umaru Yar‘Adua by his Chief Economic Adviser, Mallam Tanimu Yakubu on April 18, 2008, while reclamation work commenced on June 9. The project is mainly a private investment initiative with no direct government funding.

As at the end of February, 2009, a total area of 3,078,757 cubic metres had been sand-filled and placed in the reclamation area, while about 35,000 tonnes of rock had been delivered to the site from Ibadan, Oyo State, for the revetment.

A total length of 6,500 metres had been earmarked for development along the Atlantic with an average width of 1,260 metres, while a 30-metre wide central waterway had been incorporated into the development to provide water transport facilities connecting the three marinas.

Former House of Representatives Minority Leader, Hon. Farouk Adamu Aliyu, has poured ice on President Umaru Yar’Adua’s effort to fix the power sector in the country.
He also accused the Reps Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, of conspiring with the Presidency to play out a script by embarking on what he described as a wild goose chase in the name of power probe, with the sole intent of discrediting former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Speaking on an AIT (Africa Independent Television) programme tagged “Focus Nigeria,” monitored by Sunday Sun, the former lawmaker who was in the House between 2003 and 2007 said: “You know I am not an Obasanjo fan, but I have to say this because that is the truth. President Yar’Adua is the greatest enemy of Nigeria in terms of the power issue. Obasanjo did something before he left. If Yar’Adua had funded the budget in the last one year, we will not be talking about 6000MW by the end of this year; we would have gone far.

“I said it earlier that Obasanjo did not steal any money meant for the power project, but my colleagues in the House did not help matters with the power probe. Speaker Bankole only connived with Yar’Adua to rubbish Obasanjo, and that is because he (Bankole) too wanted to bring Ogun local politics to the limelight. And this is why I insist that the elite in Nigeria are Nigeria’s problem. Every money in this country is being spent by politicians.

“In our time, we (House of Representatives members) were collecting N9million per quarter. But now they are collecting N25million per quarter,” he added.
Aliyu, who believes that now is the time for progressives in Nigeria to unite and fight Yar’Adua on electoral matters to a standstill, just the way they did to Obasanjo during the vexatious third term plot, insisted that the president has never being sincere with his pronouncements since he was sworn in on May 29, 2007.

“Everything Yar’Adua says, he doesn’t mean it. But I want to beg him in the name of Allah to be sincere with whatever he says. He has the semblance of been better than Obasanjo, but unfortunately he is not. Mr. President is simply not sincere.”
“When he came, he said there was a problem with our electoral system, and that he wants to solve it. If he was sincere with his promise, he should have taken the Uwais’ report to the National Assembly,” he said.

Nigeria is a nation of many paradoxes. Ours is a country with massive human and material resources and we still find it difficult to cater for the basic needs of our people. We are blessed with crude oil and instead of developing and maintaining refineries that will be producing adequately for local consumption, we prefer to spend foreign exchange on importation of petroleum products. We have a huge capacity to cater for our electricity needs, yet hardly a day passes without the woe of power outage.

Comparing our government led by President Umaru Yar’Adua with that of Barack Obama in the United States of America, it bleeds my heart to see that we have been and still getting it all muddled up in terms of bringing democratic dividends to bear on the wellbeing of the citizenry.

Obama swung into action immediately he was pronounced winner of the presidential election and started picking his cabinet, which was almost complete by the time he was inaugurated. On his first full day as President, he started taking decisions, which will have far-reaching effect on the polity, trying to keep to his campaign promises to the electorate. It is said that the first few days of any presidency is a fair predictor of the overall direction of the policy thrust of such government.

Juxtaposing the Obama approach with that of our own president, who has spent upwards of twenty months in office, it is embarrassingly clear that we have a situation of a visionless leader seemingly steering a rudderless ship of state. He has made numerous promises that he has not kept till date. Any leader in that position can never be trusted to deliver on the key fundamentals of a good society - healthcare, potable water, electricity, education, security, free and fair elections, a favourable business climate as well as equity, complete freedom and justice in the polity.

On assuming the presidency, he promised to declare an emergency on the power sector. But the situation has gone worse and there is no mention of the declaration of emergency on that sector. The damages of a virtually non-existent power generation capacity for the nation cannot be quantified in terms of loss of lives occasioned by use of generators, the collapse of businesses and the accompanying loss of revenue and employment, the deteriorating security situation in the country that has led to the death of thousands of innocent Nigerians, the level of degeneracy in our educational sector, the massive amount of private and public revenue spent on fuel for generators.

Methinks President Yar’Adua never conceptualised the so-called seven-point agenda he always harped on. Maybe he was just introduced to it by his advisers as a powerful tool that will sway the public to his side. If he really internalised it prior to his ascendancy to the presidency, he would have had a solid and workable roadmap to economic and social renewal of a battered and beaten Nigerian state that was in need of urgent surgical operation to safeguard its continued existence. He would have realised that delay was not to be tolerated and could be disastrous.

He would have defined his presidency in the first 100 days in office, putting policies and programmes in place that would have direct bearing on the people. He would have held his campaign promises sacrosanct and known that a leader who fails to keep his promise has shot himself in the foot in the face of his followers, except the hypocrites among them.

I am looking forward to the day Nigerians will have confidence and belief in their leaders, when millions will troop out to the Eagle Square to witness the inauguration of a leader we would be proud of, to have a true feeling that we are the giant of Africa, the bastion of the black race, and the only hope of redemption for our battered continent. I look forward to a time when our leaders will be fully accountable to the electorate, when institutions will blossom rather than individuals, thereby safeguarding the growth of key establishments.

We have been hearing of Vision 20-20-20, the plan to place Nigeria among the first 20 leading economies in the world by year 2020. While conceding that it is an ambitious plan, I would say that, considering the present circumstances and the antecedents of the government since it assumed office, the reasonable conclusion is that the document is just a worthless piece of paper. Before putting us among the leading economies of the world, we want, as a matter of urgency, water, electricity, excellent health care facilities, education, jobs, security, and accountability. These are the key fundamentals that have direct bearing on the poorest of the poor as well as other levels of distressed Nigerians.

Credible elections have been seen as one of the cardinal points of a truly democratic society. The moment we start getting our various elections right, Nigeria will begin to get positive ratings internationally. No amount of re-branding will convince any body across the world to take us seriously when we continue having acrimonious and fraudulent elections. We hardly hear about the chief electoral officer of the United States or even Ghana that has got it right. But regularly in Nigeria, our sensibilities are being offended by a certain Maurice Iwu, who has been unrelenting in defending the indefensible. Rather than step down, he continues to hold on to the office as if it was a matter of life and death. Iwu has refused to bow despite the public dismay and annoyance.

Iwu should tell us how many court cases are ongoing with respect to elections in the United States, that he said have a few lessons to learn from Nigeria’s elections, he should tell us whether the electoral body in the US, either by hook or crook, aided the then ruling Republican party to win the election using the famed power of incumbency that has led some to say that the PDP will rule Nigeria for upwards of sixty years. Obviously, Iwu and his ilk are part of the myriad of problems plaguing this nation. The earlier he is relieved of his duties the better for everyone.

I’m looking forward to when the vote of every Nigerian will count. Then, the politicians who feel they are doing us favour will have to give account of their stewardship before they can even be considered to vie for office again. It would then not be possible for godfathers and political tin gods to dictate the pace of politicking.

You and I can make this happen if we decide to vote for change and guard our votes from electoral criminals in 2011. We did it in 1993, when Nigerians came out massively to elect a Moslem-Moslem ticket in a peaceful and exemplary manner. Nigerians, as one, voted massively for MKO Abiola, providing us with a benchmark for measuring the standard of future elections in Nigeria. Notwithstanding Iwu’s grandstanding, no other election in the country has been able to surpass June 12. Let us do it again. We can do it! Yes, we can!

President meets the Ghanaian community in the U.K
President Attah Mills and his wife were in the U.K by special invitation by her Majesty the Queen , U.K Prime Minister on a 3 day visit. However, he managed to kill 40 birds( engagements) with just one stone (i.e .one plane ticket).

Yesterday, 5.5/09 was an historic day for most Ghanaians in the U.K . I went to work at about 6.45 am just because I wanted to leave early and devote my time and wait to hear our current President maiden speech .

I left work at 3pm and head to Marriott Hotel near Oxford Circus. Some tickets were issued to the Ghanaian community but many people just turned up to see the new President and nobody was turned away as I observed. Ghanaians in particular are noted to turning up very late at functions. However on this occasion we were all there waiting for our the President. It was certainly Ghana time but an new record of European time for Ghanaian.

However when we sensed I delayed I realised that the President might be engaged with the BBC radio interview he was having. My son also emailed the BBC site and got a slot. Unfortunately for my 17 yrs he was at college there missed the opportunity to being interviewed by the President on air.

Indeed the President’s late minute slot of the BBC interview meant he had to delay in coming to us.

When President and his wife plus some his Cabinet arrived one could sense the the joy oozing from his people who he is serving.

The prayers said by a united Christian, Dr Lawrence Tetteh and the Moslem, Alhaji Muhammed Haydara. This made Ghana community and guest who attended to see the kind of diversity and be proud of it. Money can’t buy the joy of loving each other regardless our religious believes, race or creed for it is the people that matter. At the point, I felt the Western world need to learn a thing or two from Ghana as an example to respecting each other religion and integrating both faith as a signal to the people that we are all one. This unity displayed yesterday to me was a sign of peace in Ghana which sadly many countries see each other as enemies.

The Ablade cultural troupe were also excellent and demonstrated the rich cultural heritage that Ghana has . However we do not market that richness well enough. .

The Deputy Chief of Staff, Alex Segbefia from the High Commission did handle affairs on the day brilliantly well and paved the way for our new President’s speech.

The President’s address confirmed our expectations. The President did the pacesetting which is a leadership style based on the premise that the leader’s manner of doing thing is the best.

His humility and welcoming spirit came across so well and the his audience saw him as a genuine person who wanted to listen and serve his people. Amassing wealth was not his priority at all. Ghana is extremely grateful to God for helping the ordinary Ghana back home to choose our leader. These are indeed Ghanaians from North, South, East and West. Therefore I would urge our new President to ensure that as he put it that there is inventory of state properties, and cars, accountability of projects. Contracts should only be awarded to the bidder who meet criteria not those who knows someone in Government as this has been the norm.

Ghana needs a uniformity of education in all our regions, and local chiefs should be part of the strategic decision making not just Cabinet Ministers who many a time do not know the local needs nor the geography of some areas. Mrs Wilhelmina Asamoah also finished off votes of thanks.

No longer would Ghanaians be bullied by any sitting President when the ordinary Ghanaian know precisely what is needed for their local communities.

There was not time for any questions and answers however, I would encourage our High Commissions in the various countries to be have an open policy so that Ghanaians who have the knowledge and know-how in certain areas would be welcome. Thus, they would share their skills and knowledge on a voluntary or paid working holiday back home. We need to have a skills audit of Ghanaian abroad from every country and tap into this pool before outsourcing contracts and consultancy jobs.

Ghana has what it takes to build a nation and with such a President who listen and know his mission as a leader would make the Ghanaian dream of a better home a reality.

All the NDC and various parties members were also present and make the occasion a successful one. Ghanaian let’s use the opportunity unity to share our knowledge with each other and build a better Ghana as one building needing all us as its materials( human capital) for that transformation.

Port Harcourt - The Rivers State Government plans to spend 188 million Euros on the construction of a mono-rail in Port Harcourt and has earmarked one billion naira for a cable stayed bridge and ring road in the city.

The government has also asked the newly created Ministry of Niger Delta to assist the state government in the construction of the projects.

For the mono-rail, the government said it would aid in easing the transportation difficulties currently encountered by the people because of the sacking of commercial motorcyclists from Port Harcourt.

Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi told Chief Ufot Ekaete when the minister visited Port Harcourt, last weekend, that the Federal government had abandoned the state in terms of citing projects in the state, pointing out that it was a serious problem that must be resolved immediately.

"We think that part of the solution to that problem is to build a monorail that will be able to handle mass transportation of people and we will commence as soon as the Assembly passes the Appropriation Bill into law and we wish that you can partner with us".

Amaechi said it was regrettable that the topography of the area had made the cost of road construction so expensive, explaining that the state was the only one with about 3000 creeks, "causing people untold sufferings".

Particularly, he told Ekaete that many lives had been lost in the state as a result of cholera outbreak emanating from the pollution of the environment. He then begged the federal government to clean up the environment for the sake of the people.

He then identified unemployment, poverty, lack of infrastructural development and non-enforcement of the law as the factors responsible for the crisis in the Niger Delta, expressing the hope that the minister would use his experience to muster the necessary political will to find solutions to the problems.

Ekaete on his part agreed that the budget to the ministry this year was paltry in comparison with the myriad of problems but that it was better to start from somewhere and with what was available "and ask for more later because there is no time to waste".

He warned that some thieves who would come in the name of being contractors will be brought on their knees "because any project not properly executed in accordance with acceptable standards would be promptly terminated and the contractor and those connected thith the shoddy jobs prosecuted and public funds recovered."
