GE Transportation, a unit of the General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), announced today it has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Nigerian Federal Ministry on behalf of the Nigerian Railway Corporation to deliver 25 new locomotives in 2010 for freight and passenger transport. “The Nigerian Transport Ministry looks forward to its partnership with GE Transportation,” said Alhaji Ibrahim Bio, Nigerian Minister of Transport. “The delivery of these new locomotives will be key to our continued railroad infrastructure development and economic growth.” Alhaji Ibrahim Bio added, “ The President and Federal Government of Nigeria are determined to revive the railway system into a critical enabling engine of the economy. We hope that our partnership with GE in successfully implementing this revitalization program will serve as a model to the railway industry in the entire African continent. ” GE Transportation won an open tender for the locomotive order. “As part of our proposal, GE experts performed an extensive analysis on Nigeria’s narrow-gauge railway network, haulage requirements and traffic patterns to determine the best fit locomotive,” said Lorenzo Simonelli, President and CEO of GE Transportation. “We are honored to support the country’s rail infrastructure growth and are looking forward to working with our Nigerian partners.” The proposed Model C25 EMPD six-axle locomotives will be built by GE Transportation South America, GE Transportation’s affiliate facility located in Brazil, and are scheduled for delivery in 2010. The locomotives feature GE’s reliable 7FDL 12-cylinder, 2,500 horsepower engine that will be supplied by GE Transportation’s diesel engine manufacturing plant in Grove City, Pennsylvania, USA. |
Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) Nigeria's President Umaru Yar'Adua has said he will declare a state of emergency in the country's epileptic power sector next month, fulfilling a key campaign promise aimed at solving the nation's perennial power problem. "When the emergency is declared, any national resource, belonging to anybody, required to meet the target of production will be used and any previous agreement that may hinder its implementation will be set aside," the President said in an in terview with the leading local Guardian newspaper, highlights of which were published on Monday. "I am taking this step to assure Nigerians. I would not contemplate taking this drastic measure: power emergency, if not to assure our people that we will meet the target. So, I am aware that these measures are drastic but I am taking them in the interest of the nation to override every other personal interest," he said. During his electioneering campaign in 2007, Yar'Adua of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had pledged to declared a state of emergency if he won the presidential election. But almost two years on, the President has yet to fulfil his campaign pledge. The immediate target of the power emergency is to raise the country's power generation from less than 3,000 Mega Watts currently to 6,000MW by the end of this year. Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, needs at least 10,000mw to get some level of stability in its power sector. |

Kano Lebanese Community Denies Rift With Immigration Jaafar Jaafar 17 May 2009 * Email| * Print| * Comment Share: * Digg * Del.icio.us * Muti * StumbleUpon Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Lebanese Community, Mr Tahir Fadallah, has refuted reports that his members are planning to embark on a peaceful demonstration to protest preferential treatment meted against them by the Nigeria Immigrations Service. Reacting to media reports that said they were planning demonstration, Fadallah said even though it was true that they were denied renewal of their passports in Kano, the problems had nothing to do with Kano immigration office. 'Actually we are not aware of the planned demonstrations," he said. He said it was open knowledge that Lebanese were law abiding citizens wherever they found themselves, noting that they always held dialogue on any issue that affect their wellbeing. Relevant Links * West Africa * Nigeria * Migration * Middle East and Africa Mr Fadallah stated further that they don't have any problem with Kano comptroller of the immigration, Mr. David Paradang, and they never had quarrel with him because, according to him, his job was based on the strict enshrinement of the law guiding the immigration service. While arguing that the Lebanese community be allowed to renew their e-passports in their state of residence, he called on President Umaru Musa Yar'adua, the minister of interior, and the Comptroller-General of the Immigration to look into the matter. "Why I am appealing to these gentlemen to interfere is because my people usually stay for over a month any time they went to Abuja for the renewal of the-passport. It is hectic. And one can imagine the cost of living and what they go through," Tahir lamented. He then declared that there was never a time the community said they were taking to the street to protest the refusal of renewing their e-passports in Kano. http://allafrica.com/stories/200905181066.html |
Saudi Arabian coastguards rescued 278 illegal migrants of various African nationalities in the Red Sea, the official Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday. The vessel, carrying the migrants, including women and children, broke down in the high seas and was pushed by strong winds into Saudi territorial waters, it said. It did not say if the immigrants would be allowed to stay in the kingdom or deported to their respective countries. The crew of seven and the owner of the vessel were facing legal action, it said. Many migrants, mainly from Somalia and Ethiopia, often try to cross the Red Sea to neighbouring Yemen to flee desperate situations of civil war, political instability, poverty and famine. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on April 23 that more than 131 had died and another 66 presumed missing at sea since the beginning of 2009. It said 387 boats carrying nearly 20,000 people had arrived Yemen after crossing the waters. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/breaking_news/article01 |
